DNG and Canon SX-50

I purchased PSE 10, and PSE 11 was released soon afterward. PSE 10 works fine for my Canon camera, but is there any way to use ACR 7.3 for my Canon SX-50 with PSE 10. I tried DNG 7.3, but it tells me, incorrectly, that there are no files in any of the folders I might select for conversion.
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, sp1 and Chrome v29 (the latest).
Rusty

While the folder I opened in DNG 7.3 showed no pictures in raw (cr2) format (actually didn't show anything in the folder at all and there were some TIFFs in there) then clicked Convert AND IT WORKED! It converted all RAW files to DNG. I guess if I want to do just 1 file I will need to put that file in a folder by itself.
By the way, I CAN edit the DNG files in  Elements 10.
We can now mark this question as closed.

  • DNG 4.2 and Canon G9 raw CR2 problem

I have been unsuccesful getting the 4.2 DNG to convert the CR2 Canon G9 files, getting an error message that the file type is not supported. Running Windows XP Home. Any ideas as to how I can fix this. Thanks, Jeff

I just helped my friend with the Canon G9 Raw file won't open and recognized on Mac Computer.
Problem when try to open or drag the Raw image (*.CR2 File), I got an error message says the file type is either not supported or corrupted, also the file in the browser are all grayed out, means can't click & select & open. So I re-install the software just to make sure the software is fine.
The software comes with the camera is easy to install, here is the thing I was stumbled but figured it out.
    1. Use browser to find the raw file.
    2. click to select the file
    3. go to Menu Bar under "File" there is a section you'll see "Process Raw File" or something like that, then you are done, from there you can edit and open a Raw file.
My impression towards to the raw image quality and canon software: The software interface is not as nice compare to PS Element 4 Raw Plug-in, especially there is not button for "Processing Raw" on the browser window that you have to go to File >.. , I hope this is just for Mac users or I have to say the software is silly.

  • Windows 8 Elements 11 Problem with DNG and CR2 files

Have a Windows 8 machine with Elements 11 which has Camera Raw 7.4 installed and showing correctly in the editor. The Browser shows thumbnails of the DNG and CR2 files, but when an attempt is made to edit them, the editor opens but does not open the file. Same thing happens if I try to open the file using the File Open from the menu.
Also I have been through the help and forums and found an article about opening jpeg files as Camera Raw files (http://blogs.adobe.com/pselements/open-jpeg-files-in-adobe-camera-raw-in-photoshop-element s/) and this does not work either.
    Help please !

Adobe does not provide a codec for viewing Canon raw files as thumbnails.  Canon has one for free but it only works on a 32 bit Windows system.
Early this year I found a free download for displaying raw file thumbnails that works on an x64 Windows system.  Since that time the author realized there's a real demand for this software and has started charging for it.  In any case, I find it works very well.

  • Dng and CR2 files display as icons in CS5

Now I have installed CS5 on three machines - a new installation on WIN7, and here everything is alright - no problem!
Two machines running XP wth a previous CS4 installation uninstalled show up in Bridge with this problem:
dng and CR2 files display as icons!!
Everything is updated, ACR plugin placed as should be, and Camera RAW is working fine when OPENING the file. It is only a display problem, but this is serious enough - you cannot go through your downloaded pictures.
I have tried to follow a solution close to the one given for CS4:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407945.html
but I am out of luck.
Is it an XP problem, or has it something to do with the previous installation of CS4?
Any suggestions will be great! I have searced, read, tried, searched, tried.... some share this problem, but I haven't seen any soloution.
    Thanks, Jan

I need Camera RAW support for Lightroom 4.4 and Canon 7D Mark ii.  Is there a Camera RAW version for me?

Thanks for your help.  I checked out DNG on YouTube and understand more
about it.  I downloaded the DNG converter and transferred in files from my
camera.  Then I imported into Lightroom.  It works!   Thanks again.

  • Phtoshop CS and Canon CR2 (400D)

    I have CS on Windows.
I have read this in the FAQ:
    ====
Q: I have Photoshop 7, with Adobe Camera Raw 1; will there be an update to support the new cameras? What about Photoshop CS and Camera Raw 2.4?
A: Only the current version of Photoshop will receive ACR updates. However, when a new DNG converter is released, Camera Raw 2.4 in Photoshop CS and all versions of Camera Raw 3 in Photoshop CS2 will be able to open files supported by the new version of DNG converter. Photoshop 7 and ACR 1.0 do not support DNG, therefore you will need to upgrade to the latest version of Photoshop.
    ====
And I don't understand it - though I suspect it may offer me a (partial?) answer to my problem. Adobe's efforts at explaining are useless.
Go to Camera Raw latest plug-in and it says it is not compatible with CS.
Go to Camera Raw 2.x which is compatible with CS but it does not support Canon 400D CR2.
Go to Camera Raw 3.x which DOES support 400D CR2 but is not compatible with CS.
Nowhere (that I can find - and I've spent hours looking and half that time getting "this page not available for scheduled mantenance") does Adobe deign to explain what to do other than tell me I need to upgrade to CS3 (as do customer services).
The answer above seems to imply that some technical combination of Camera Raw 2.4 and a "new" DNG Converter will somehow allow a back level version of Camera Raw (2.4 - which will work with CS I gather) open new/later camera raw files (e.g. 400D CR2).
Can someone confirm that this is the case and provide idiot-proof advice on which "new" DNG converter I need to perform this simple magic? Thanks so much.
(Gee - it's not like CS, CS2, CS3 are all THAT different, are they? Why can't they just make Camera Raw back-compatible? Seems to me like a deliberate blackmail strategy to "encourage" expensive upgrades. But I'm just a p'd off cynic.)
    Hey-ho
    Thanks,
    George

G Sch - thanks for your further clarification - very helpful.
Jim - thank you, indeed, for your patience. Though it is perhaps not quite as saintly as some of your friends imply given the obvious validity of John Joslin's comments that "there are plenty of examples outside the rarefied air of the Adobe world where such backward and forward compatibility is achieved." Shame on me for not being sufficiently au fait with this rarified world that your friends thought I was testing your patience unreasonably, and thanks again.
Thank you, John J, for recognising there is a real world out here beyond the dubious business ethics of Canon and Adobe, where such compatibility is not just expected but taken for granted and EASILY achieved. (As I implied - I want to be a customer, not a well to be dipped into at every turn until I'm dry.)
As for Ramon - well I don't normally respond to such sneers but - well, how does it feel to be on that hook Ramon? They've certainly got you, haven't they! So every time you buy a new camera, you fully expect a) to be moved for no reason whatsoever, other than they can do it to you, to a new and different and incompatible raw file format, and b) have to allow for the expense of being forced to upgrade your PS software or else stop using it and throw away your investment in it. Hope it feels good. Me? I don't see anything unreasonable in my expectation - but then I haven't fallen for an apparent Adobe (and Canon) con trick - until now ;-) - and I won't again (unlike some, it seems).
Funnily enough I (and probably you too, Ramon) have bought many new bits of hardware (called PCs) over the years and have run many different operating systems and all of them, even my Win 3.1 and Win98 ones (and I can still run Win98 on my latest PC, by the way) still run apps that can open and generate files (e.g. .doc) that I can use on all of these PCs. That may not be the best analogy - but yes I did acquire a camera that was not available when CS was - but who'd have expected Canon to have different raw formats for 300D, 350D and 400D? Shame on me for not doing my research. And seeing as CS, CS2 and CS3 are not completely DIFFERENT applications but evolutionary, who'd have thought they'd make an ARC for CS3 that was deliberately not compatible with CS, just to extort an upgrade fee from me. Oh - sorry - you'd have thought it, Ramon, that's who.
One does wonder how it is that buying a new camera effectively has an "Adobe tax" tied to it, and who benefits from the tax. (If Canon had any sense they'd stop their end of this so there was no opportunity for Adobe to levy the tax - but where is the 'tax revenue' spent, I wonder?)
Perhaps my expectations are unjustified, and someone can/will produce excellent and justified technical reasons why the Canon raw formats changed and why CS3 is so utterly different from primitive old CS that there are good reasons why backward compatibility would ruin the company (after all I said I'd pay a few bucks for it when I needed an ARC update). But Adobe aren't showing any signs of explaining this, and nor is anyone else - so until then I'll continue to treat them with the contempt they appear to treat their "customers" with. I made an investment in CS and they have not just utterly failed to respect that and seek to protect my investment, they have gone out of their way to render that investment worth less. I'll be using the native Canon tools and other photo apps from now on, rather more than PS, even given the DNG route.
Well that's 5 minutes more of getting it off my chest. :-)
I have the information I sought - thanks, Jim and others - so if I don't come back I'm sure you'll forgive me if I leave you all to it.
(Probably best to just let it all lie, now, eh?)

  • PSE 12 and Canon 70d raw CR2 files

I have a new Canon 70d which came bundled with PSE 11, but PSE11 doesn't support the CR2 raw without converting to DNG. and then there are no thumbnails, which makes file handling a pain. Does PSE12 have support for the 70d CR2 files, and does it show the thubnails for either the CR2 or the converted DNG files?

I have updated these instructions for using ACR 8.3 in PSE12:
ACR 8.3 will work with PSE12 to open 70D files, but there is no installer, yet if ever, so you have to be a little devious to get things to all work.  You also need to be on a Windows 7 or 8 since ACR 8.3 supposedly doesn't work on Vista or XP.  I should also say that the process outlined below does work on my Windows 7 64-bit computer, but I also have PS-CS6 and PS-CC installed on it, so it is possible that ACR 8.3 is dependent on something that wouldn't exist on a computer with only PSE installed on it, but someone else will have to confirm that.
I was able to get 70D files to open in ACR 8.3 on PSE12 by doing the following:
Download the ACR 8.3 for Windows update for PS-CC via the direct download link on the Adobe Blog:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2011/03/keeping-photoshop-up-to-date.html#notconnected
Unzip this downloaded setup.zip to a folder somewhere.
Inside the files from that zip is a folder called payloads \ AdobeCameraRaw8.0All-031213015928.  Note that this is the folder without x64 in the path.  PSE12 is a 32-bit program so we need the 32-bit version of the plug-in.
Inside that folder is another ZIP called Assets1_1.zip so unzip it somewhere.
Inside Assets1_1.zip there is a file called 1003.  This is the largest file in that zip and is the plug-in you need.
Copy this 1003 file into the existing PSE12 camera raw plug-in folder:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 12\File Formats or for a 32-bit Windows OS, into:  C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 12\File Formats
Rename the existing Camera Raw.8bi to Camera Raw_8bi_80 (in case something doesn't work and you need to rename it back, later).
    Rename 1003 to Camera Raw.8bi
After these steps you have the ACR 8.3 plug-in installed in PSE12 but not the camera and lens profiles, so install those by downloading and installing the DNG Converter 8.3:

  • Premiere element 7 and canon 550 camera

I recently bought the canon 550 camera and tried to open the video footage on premiere element 7 but was unable to do so - an error message popped -up saying '...codec not installed.' I have downloaded the latest dng and it works for converting the raw images but not the video. The video footage is currently on my hard drive. Am I uploading the footage incorrectly or is element 7 not up to date with the canon 550 camera?

Video from still cameras like this usually needs to be converted  --ideally to DV-AVIs -- before it can be used in Premiere Elements, as  we discuss in the FAQs to the right of this forum.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317?tstart=0
If  this video is an MPEG, you can convert it with MPEG Streamclip.
If  it is an MOV, you can convert it with Super or Quicktime Pro.

  • Copy original TIFF to DNG and import?

Does Lightroom support the option "Copy as dng and import" when the source files are tiff?
The reason is that I would like to be able to copy my original tiff files as dng and then import into Lightroom. The tiffs are 16 bit tiffs generated from Nikon Capture.
The menu system allows me to choose this option, but all the files get copied as tiffs and imported as tiffs even though I have chosen the "copy as dng" option.
This is a major setback as the tiffs are about 60MB each, whereas the dngs Lightroom generates from a Nikon NEF raw image are under 10MB each.
I can't seem to figure out a way to convert all tiffs to dng on import into Lightroom.
    Thanks.

    Caine-
You're definitely deriving good insight from all of this!
As far as your color and tone, others have seen similar things with Canon's DPP software. The answer to these discrepancies has been that Canon and Nikon understand their RAW files better than Adobe can understand them because they don't share their "secrets" with Adobe. But, what we can do is take one of a few approaches in LR: one is to find some presets that other users have developed for your camera and import them into LR, see what works, and apply them. Another is to develop presets yourself: you can save a Develop Preset, set a preset at import, or set a "Default Preset" for your camera. There is also a method that gets used a lot to calibrate your camera in Camera Raw using a GretagMacBeth color card, then open the image in Photoshop and running a script that analyzes the captured colors and puts out a calibration preset for your camera.
As far as high ISO settings, others have complained about LR's noise reduction for higher ISO's, so you're not alone. I noticed something interesting, though, in the past couple of days. I was testing my daughter's Canon Rebel, which she has capturing RAW+JPEG, as I was setting up LR on her computer. I decided to check out her high ISO quality (it goes up to 1600) and found that Canon's in-camera noise reduction, which it applies to the jpegs, was quite good. At first glimpse it seems better than what I could do in LR.
I guess, Caine, that if I was in your position, I would import all of my RAW into LR, and just use the Nikon tiff approach for the images I needed to edit for use. I know what you mean about huge files. Fortunately, hard drives are cheap compared to earlier days, but still...so, I would approach my workflow like import into LR, do whatever I could with LR, but for output go to Nikon first to create a tiff before, say, editing in Photoshop or whatever.

  • Sea & Sea DX-2G RAW (DNG) and Aperture 3

Does anyone shoot underwater with a Sea & Sea DX-2G camera? It can capture RAW files in the DNG format and I was wondering if Aperture 3 supports this. The Apple Raw Compatibility page footnotes DNG as supporting "most cameras that can capture DNG".
I am researching underwater solutions and RAW is a requirement for me. Underwater water setups for my DSLR are pricing out from $8,500 and up which is a bit too much until I get good at it.

As I understand it, DNG is the photographic equivalent of a PDF. DNG is supposed to be Adobe standardized, so I can't imagine why it wouldn't work. DNG is a decent format, but I have had some serious artifacts in highlight areas after converting from Canon raw to DNG. Just something to think about. If the camera supports DNG natively, you shouldn't have any problems.
You can read more about DNG and maybe find the compatibility list here: http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/

  • In PSE 13, when I open a folder, jpeg files have a preview image, but PSD, DNG and CR2 files don't. Also, no thumbnail below the file list.

Working in PSE 13, when I open a folder, jpeg files have a preview image, but psd files just have white sheet of paper as preview.  I have to open the file to be able to see it.  Also, there is no thumbnail of the file below the file list.Surely, there's a setting that needs to be changed. I did not have this problem with Elements 12. This is a real bother because I have to use Lightroom to see all the file types. It seems as if Elements is using the standard Windows file loader that can't show previews of file types it doesn't know including .PSD, DNG and CR2. Is that a bug or did I do something wrong? Thanks for any help.

I am using Windows 7 64 bits. Working in the editor, I never use the organizer. The screen above is not the same at all that I got in Elements 12, it was completely different and showed me a thumbnail below the listing when I single clicked on one of the files. In Elements 12, I also could see  a thumbnail of all the file types, not only the jpegs. It is as if the loader is the regular Windows used anywhere, not the right one for Elements. I hope someone understands my problem.. Thanks.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 7   - Comparison with Picasa and Canon Zoom Browser

I have recently bought a new computer and connected it to a USB hard drive which contained all my photos and a copy of an Adobe Photoshop Elements (APE) 4 catalog which permitted me to run APE 4 directly from the USB drive. The new computer runs on Windows 7 with Adobe Photoshop Elements 7. When I attempted to open the old catalog, created in APE 4 APE 4, APE 7 needed to convert it. The converted catalog then needed to reconnect with files and this took hours because APE seems to be incapable of sorting this out automatically. On the other hand Picasa 3 dealt with the matter in minutes and Canon Zoom Browser dealt with it in seconds. Why is this? What are the advantages of using APE 7 over Picasa 3 or Canon Zoom Browser?

    John McQuade wrote:
I avoid keeping photos on the C Drive of my computer because of adverse past experiences of losing data when problems arose and it was necessary to reinstall Windows. I prefer to use two separate hard disc drives connected to my computer using  USB ports so that I have all photos and catalogs on each drive. PSE catalogs appear to be drive letter specific so that a catalog created on one drive will not function if simply copied to the other. In PSE-4 I overcame this problem by opening the copied catalog and changing all references to drive letters. In PSE-7 I am unable to open the database and my goal is to find a quick and efficient way of modifying a copied catalog so that it functions on a drive different to the one on which the catalog was created.
Finally, and at long last, a kindred spirit that won't keep photos on the OS drive. I was told as recently as >> yesterday << that my post about saving photos anyplace else but  "C:/" was "non-sequitur".
Second, I'm sort of accustomed to "USB drive", as a synonym for "flash drive", and "Ext HDD" referring to an external HDD, (this makes sense, at least in my twisted individual perception), so accordingly, I apologize for my knee-jerk lecture about it.  (In hindsight, perhaps the only child in me is expecting too much also).
I never use external HDDs, but rather install additional HDDs internally to accomplish the same net result. My sensibilities here are, they are quite a bit less expensive, they do the same job, and you don't have addional s*** laying all over the place.
IMO, you are overthinking the database issue. I get to say that since I have no such ability to do so, and additionally, I have never been unable to reconnect a catalog other than within the normal Windows environment.
Therefore, I suggest changing the drive letter(s) to that of the old drive(s), and remain in blisslful ignorance as to whether PSE-7 is using the SN# or Drive letter to do its "dirty work".
As Mr. Ellis has pointed out, you're trying to do too many things at once. I'm going to suggest an "experimental" fix which is sort of backwards from Mr. Ellis', but retains the same spirit.
Install PSE-4 on the NEW machine! Insert its catalog file into its (PSE-4) correct folder. This location can be found by "Help" > "System Info".
Upon installation, PSE-4 will generate a new catalog, "My Catalog", therefore you must change the old catalog's name, (say "My Catalog 2"), to avoid a conflict.
You might have to change the "compatibility" mode for PSE-4 several times, before PSE-7 will be able to follow the file path.
As an additional note, since PSE-7 is technically, (according to Adobe), "incompatible", you can match its compatibility mode with PSE-4's, at the onset. After you have stabilized the system, change PSE-7's mode back to whatever works best.
If you need any more info on these operations, please feel free to post back.
I would like to add, that my PSE-7 in Windows 7 runs poorly in comparision with the same program in the XP environment. This seems not to be "typical", but IMO, worth mentioning.
Please also bear in mind that you can paste the entire catalog file into the "Open Catalog" dialog box, and PSE will place in its folder for you...!
Then, assuming the HDD letters are the same, it will reconnect "instantly", or in the case of a PSE-4 ".psa" cat file, PSE-7 will convert it, then open it instantly.
As an afterthought, by changing the drive letters, then pasting the .psa file into the "Catalog Open" dialog box, you do not have to make any additional installations of PSE, nor muck about in any database.

  • Epson and Canon printers not working with 10.7.5

Anyone know if there is a fix for Epson and Canon printers for 10.7.5? Did Apple intentionally switch off printer drivers to force us to upgrade to Mountain Lion? I called Epson technical support and they mentioned it's a well-known issue and they said to "wait for an Apple update". I doubt that will fix the issue. My Canon printer stopped working for months already and there is still no fix.
