DNG and Color Negatives

This may seem to be out in left field but here goes...
I've been using custom camera profiles in LR to help get better color when scanning color negative film using Vuescan from my Nikon scanner. Vuescan can output a DNG file that contains the metadata tags for Make and Model so I can shoot a color chart, scan it and run it through profiling software (either DNG profile editor or Colorchecker Passport) then use the profile in LR's Camera Calibration to help zero in the color. It works fairly well.
Now I'm scanning larger negatives on an old Imacon Flextight, which is producing great scans as far as dynamic range and sharpness are concerned but doesn't have profiles for the new film I'm using. I figured I could use the same strategy as with Vuescan if I could get the metadata tags set in the tiff files then convert to DNG and make a profile. I've been using Exiftool to set every Make and Model tag I can write to, and it shows up in LR's metadata pane as being set, but the profiles aren't matching up with the file (i.e. they don't show up as options in the Camera Calibration drop down).
What am I missing to get these to match up?

Can you please send me two examples:
1. One of your old DNGs (for the case where the profile shows up correctly in Lr). Please also send me the profile that works with this DNG.
2. One of your new DNGs (which doesn't work). Please also send me the profile that you're trying to use with this DNG (which isn't showing up).
With these 4 pieces, I can figure out what's going wrong.

That's because you scanned them as B/W photos and iPhoto 08 doesn't support the grayscale color profile. You can either rescan them as color photos or export them as originals out of iPhoto to a folder on the desktop and applhy this Automator application, Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB Profile, on them and then remimport into iPhoto. You can download it from Toad's Cellar . Be sure to read the warning on the website about not applying it on your only copies.

External display turned color negative mode

Hello, I upgraded to Leopard from Tiger and have been using my applications without much of a problem until today. I was away for few hours and my display suddenly started to show everything in color negative mode (blacks as white, green as magenta etc). Checked all no such option on preferences. I can not get out of it. Pls help. I was using Final Cut Express HD if that is relevant. The other user accounts in the computer are not affected. Thanks.

Press the Option, Command, Control, and 8 keys simultaneously, or turn off White on Black in the Seeing tab of the Universal Access pane of System Preferences.

I have already tried downloading the drivers from Epson as per one person's suggestions, but the dialog box isn't anything like what was suggested--the choices in the box weren't the same for the most part. I don't want to lock up the computer or disable the printer for normal printing, but I have a lot of old negatives that I would love to have prints from.

I am using the latest software from Epson for Mac OS 10.10.2 that I downloaded last week. I seem to remember that the older software (we're talking 6-8 years ago) had to option to scan slides or negatives and would convert the results into positives via the scanner. I don't like the most recent scanning software because it jumps right into the scan before giving you a chance to change the options. It uses the selected options from the previous scan which are sometimes right, sometimes wrong. Thanks for your reply to my question!

I know I changed the options a lot with 2.1.0 release. I thought it would be better to have -t for filtering and -T for printing the file system type so someone using the original df would not be surprised.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience. There should not be any changes like this one in the future though but I thought it was needed (especially because of the unit options).

Ok, I'll implement this one for 2.2.0 release It'll be more like "-c always", "-c never" and "-c auto" (default) because I do not use long options but I think this would be OK, right?

IMac screen looks like a color negative

Just recently, my screen on my iMac G4 has changed. When the computer is booted up, everything is black & white, but like a negative (what's supposed to be black is white and what's supposed to be white is black). If I go into the display settings, it's set on 256 colors. If I change it to millions, then the screen just changes to what looks like a color negative (same with black & white, but blues are orange, greens are purple, and so on). And if I reboot, it starts all over again. So far nothing else seems to be affected and all programs seem to work fine, just the colors are off.
I've look through all the settings and can't find anyway to change this and don't know what might have caused it. Any help would be appreciated.

Copy original TIFF to DNG and import?

Does Lightroom support the option "Copy as dng and import" when the source files are tiff?
The reason is that I would like to be able to copy my original tiff files as dng and then import into Lightroom. The tiffs are 16 bit tiffs generated from Nikon Capture.
The menu system allows me to choose this option, but all the files get copied as tiffs and imported as tiffs even though I have chosen the "copy as dng" option.
This is a major setback as the tiffs are about 60MB each, whereas the dngs Lightroom generates from a Nikon NEF raw image are under 10MB each.
I can't seem to figure out a way to convert all tiffs to dng on import into Lightroom.

You're definitely deriving good insight from all of this!
As far as your color and tone, others have seen similar things with Canon's DPP software. The answer to these discrepancies has been that Canon and Nikon understand their RAW files better than Adobe can understand them because they don't share their "secrets" with Adobe. But, what we can do is take one of a few approaches in LR: one is to find some presets that other users have developed for your camera and import them into LR, see what works, and apply them. Another is to develop presets yourself: you can save a Develop Preset, set a preset at import, or set a "Default Preset" for your camera. There is also a method that gets used a lot to calibrate your camera in Camera Raw using a GretagMacBeth color card, then open the image in Photoshop and running a script that analyzes the captured colors and puts out a calibration preset for your camera.
As far as high ISO settings, others have complained about LR's noise reduction for higher ISO's, so you're not alone. I noticed something interesting, though, in the past couple of days. I was testing my daughter's Canon Rebel, which she has capturing RAW+JPEG, as I was setting up LR on her computer. I decided to check out her high ISO quality (it goes up to 1600) and found that Canon's in-camera noise reduction, which it applies to the jpegs, was quite good. At first glimpse it seems better than what I could do in LR.
I guess, Caine, that if I was in your position, I would import all of my RAW into LR, and just use the Nikon tiff approach for the images I needed to edit for use. I know what you mean about huge files. Fortunately, hard drives are cheap compared to earlier days, but still...so, I would approach my workflow like import into LR, do whatever I could with LR, but for output go to Nikon first to create a tiff before, say, editing in Photoshop or whatever.

Adobe Camera DNG and Pentax K-3

Is it anticipated that Adobe Camera DNG and earlier versions of Lightroom will support Pentax K-3 PEF files?

That is the promise of DNG and it appears to be working as advertised with the K-3.
If I remove the Adobe Standard K3 profile, dated 12-03-2013, from the ProgramData subfolders, I am left with just the Embedded profile in ACR 6.7, verifying what ACRs prior to 8.3 would have as a choice:
The colors in the test image, above, are more muted with the Embedded profile than with Adobe Standard and also muted compared with a DNG Profile Editor profile created from the image, that is somewhat different than the Adobe Standard.

Convert color negatives to positives

I am new to photoshop element 10. I purchased for the purpose to process color negatives. ie convert negatives to positives. I am copying the originals using my CamCorder to photograph the film. I am not getting what I want using the "invert" process. I have taken the tutorial but it did not cover my subject. Some of my negatives are over 30 years old. Please help or direct me to where I can find my answers.

Not being the professional here and thus not knowing what I "can't" do, but rather just going ahead and playing with Elements 10 on my Mac, can on occasion be somewhat gratifying.
For anyone interested I will follow through on my above comment using the two sets of examples below, same procedure for both:
Using a homemade sunlight box and my little Panasonic Lumix Camera (sharp pics from 2 about inches away) I snapped the pictures of the color negatives and then I brought the now digitalized color negatives into Elements 10.
Next I...
cropped the negative image to desired size.
Hit COMMAND I     (This inverts the image with a strong cyan color cast)
then go to:
LAYER -> duplicate layer     (always a good habit to get into)
ENHANCE -> Auto Color Correction    ...or...   -> Adjust Color -> Remove Color Cast     ...or.... Adjust Color For Skin Tones   (or just play with it.. have fun with it.. see what can be done and what can't be done for real.)
and finally ENHANCE -> Adjust Lighting -> Brightness/Contrast to your personal preference.
Then either save for the web to put onto a CD or DVD or print it out.     It may not professionally perfect, nor work as good as a $700 scanner, but it certainly works well enough for me.... Good luck to all.   bill

Q for Eric: DNG Profiling - Color Matching

This question is primarily directed towards Eric in reference to an older tutorial he published on the web:

I'm trying to work with the DNG Profile Editor to make a 5D profile that matches Capture One's 5D profile. In the past, I used a similar approach to the old way of profiling in ACR/LR, basically like the old tutorial I referenced above.
With the new DNG PE, how can I perform similar functions with the Tone Curve and Color Table since I can't place sampler points in the DNG image of the color chart? Also, the RGB values in the PE are vastly different (lower) from what I see in Photoshop. Are we supposed to eyeball the adjustments hoping they're in the same neighborhood? Is there a more precise way of doing this?

Hi Terence, there's not a numerical way of doing this in the PE. For now you basically have to try to get the match visually.

DNG and Phase One

Hi,
Does dng provide lossless convertion from Phase One to dng file format?
Can you also convert it back from Dng to Phase One format without any loss of quality?

I would be interested as well in the answer, whether the conversion between PhaseOne TIF and DNG is truly lossless or not. I don't know the answer to this, and haven't researched it.
For my money Capture One, is better for pure processing than Camera RAW, still after all these revisions. Somehow the Capture One processing is more 'film like'. It takes a lot of work in Camera RAW to get a processed file to simulate what you can produce with Capture One. And even then there's some definition, some factor X missing. Tones and colors are slighty flatter, less naturalistic, sharpening more fake - using Camera RAW. 'Clarity' is particularly dangerous, artificially filtered looking, and likely to be abused Just my opintion.
So my personal answer is, depending on the answer we get above - if you can avoid using DNG - do.

You don't have to keep your photos in iPhoto to sync to your iPod according to Apple's website which states you can sync from folders in other locations:
"Syncing Photos from a Mac
To sync photos from iPhoto or a folder on your Mac:
1. Connect your iPod to your computer and open iTunes.
2. Select your iPod in the DEVICES section of the iTunes Source list.
3. In the main iTunes browser window, select the Photos tab.
4. Select the checkbox labeled "Sync photos from" and then choose either iPhoto, Aperture, Choose Folder, or Pictures, from the menu.
* If you choose iPhoto, select "All photos and albums" to copy all of your photos in iPhoto, or "Selected albums only" and select individual rolls or albums you want to include.
* If you choose Choose Folder, navigate to and select the folder of photos you want, then click Choose. Select "All photos" to copy all photos in the folder, or choose "Selected folders" to sync particular subfolders.
* If you choose Pictures, choose "All photos" to copy all photos in the folder, or choose "Selected folders" to sync particular subfolders.

Screen images appear in reverse or as a color negative on T61 Lenovo running Vista Ultimate

I have a problem with my t61 running Vista Ultimate where all of a sudden my screen images appear like a color negative. The greens are blue and the reds are yellow and white is black.. and so on. Has anyone experienced this and found a way to correct the problem?
