DNG and Nikon D810 Issue

Recently I purchased a Nikon D810 camera and am working through the issues related to software that can handle the RAW files created by this camera. The most recent challenge has been to use the Adobe DNG Converter to convert the Nikon ".NEF" files to .dng. This simply is not working.
By way of background, the Nikon settings are for taking RAW large files at 12-bit. The version of the Adobe DNG Converter I have is: 8.4.0.199.
Here is a screen shot to show the preferences I have set for the converter.
I have used a USB card reader to move the "NEF" files from the camera to my computer desktop. So no other application has had access to them at the time I try to convert the files.
I direct the DNG Converter to a file folder on my computer desktop and try to save the converted images in the same location. But, when I click the "Convert" button, here is the error message I get.
So, this brings me to the point where I really need to ask for help. I am wondering if someone can explain why I am not able to convert these files. The avenues I have taken are ones that may seem obvious:
a. Version compatibility?
b. Camera settings?
c. Not accessing files directly from camera?
But, so far, I can not find the key to this puzzle. Hope someone out there can help.
Thanks.

Bob,
I tried this but it didn't work. However, I just went out to CNET and was able to download JUST the DNG Converter and this works perfectly. Once placed in the applications folder, it just replaced the older version. I have no idea why downloading directly from the Adobe web site didn't do this in the first place. I didn't have the application fired up so I didn't think there would be a conflict. And, with CNET, there wasn't.
I am using a Mac.

  • PS CS3, Camera Raw 4.6 Update and Nikon D810 NEF File Reading Issue

      Currently Have Photoshop CS3 & Adobe Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9.
According to Adobe, Camera Raw 4.6 supports Nikon D810 NEF files.  I have downloaded Camera Raw 4.6 Update. When
I try to open Nikon D810 NEF files, I get Photoshop CS3  error that says
"cannot complete request your because it is not the right kind of
document. These NEF files wont open in Adobe Bridge at all.  What am I doing wrong?

    Hey,
Before I purchased, let me get your thoughts on another option that just occurred to me which involves:
1)Editing my D810 NEF files in LR 5.6, which I have, then exporting/saving the edited files as JPEGs.
    2) Doing any additional editing, as necessary (i.e. that might require layering or selections..etc) , with the JPEGs  with Bridge or PS CS3.
This method wont involve any additional software purchase now.. right?    Am I missing anything.   here?    Since my final output to my customers are JPEGs any way, wont this work?   Will I be at any disadvantage.   Am I missing anything.   here?

  • Lightroom 4 and Nikon D810

Will I need to upgrade or update Lightroom 4 to accomodate images from a Nikon D810 ?
And just in case, can CS5 handle the D810 RAWfiles ?

You will need to purchase an upgrade to Lightroom 5 and install at least Lightroom 5.6 in order to have support for the D810. The current version is 5.7.1. An alternative would be to download the free DNG converter from Adobe and create digital negative copies of your raw images that could be opened in Lightroom 4.

  • Photoschop CS5 and Nikon D810 don't work!

You probably already know the answer.
Either upgrade to CS6 or join the Cloud.

  • CS5 and Nikon D810

Will I need to upgrade and/or update CS5 to handle Nikon D810 raw files ?

You will NEVER be able to open raw image files from that camera in CS5, no matter what.
That camera model was first supported by ACR 8.6, which requires at least CS6 to run.
You need to go the DNG Converter route and first convert each batch of your raw files to raw DNGs you can then open in your obsolete CS5 version.

  • Banding in Photoshop CC 2014 when using gradient or curves, 5K imac and Nikon D810. Help?

I am experiencing severe banding in
    Photoshop CC 2014.
    5K imac, Nikon D810.
16 Bit Tiff in both Adobe RGB and Profoto RGB.
It seems to be something new.
    OSX Yosemtie 10.10.1
    It appears when using gradients.
    Help?

    Thanks for your help Trevor.
That does not seem to make a difference.
I sometimes use the Nik Collection for
    gradients as well.
The banding is very visible in the
    Plugin as well.
It is odd because this seems to have
    just started this week.
It is the same on my 2011 iMac as well.
Not sure if it is because I shot on a grey
    background.
    I will post an example.
I am also using Profoto RGB which
is supposed to have smoother gradients.

  • When will a camera raw plugin beavailable for the Nikon D810

I recently purchased a Nikon D810 but can not see the images when I download them to either Lightroom or Photoshop.  I am told I need a new plug-in. When will onebe available?

    Check out this:
Re: Lightroom 5 and Nikon D810
There is a solution. Just install camera raw 8.6 to get support in Photoshop. Use dng converter 8.6 to convert the nef files to dng and import those in Lightroom if you want to use Lightroom to edit the raw files. It doesn't support the small "raw" files that the D810 generates but those are a complete and utter joke anyway and nobody should be using those, not even to save space.
    >Update: I've just counted: there are 22 separate threads started in the last week asking why LR doesn't support the D810 and when will it be updated!
That must be a record. I don't think I have ever seen it as bad as with this camera. It must be incredibly popular or perhaps the change in the forum software is making it hard for people to peer down a few lines to see what has been posted already (I am being generous ;-) )

  • HT201071 Can I open Nikon D810 raw files in Aperture?

Compatibility of Aperture and Nikon D810 raw files

Yes, finally. The support has been added with the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.07 ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1757)
    on Sep 16, 2014.
This update requires Mavericks at least.  1pda will not be able to install it, if the profile signature Mac OS X (10.6.7) is still correct. It requires a system upgrade.

  • RC 8.6 Issues with Nikon D810 NEF RAW files

RC 8.6 does not correctly process Nikon D810 NEF RAW files. See the following blog article for some details:
Nikon D810 vs D800E ISO Comparison

This is very helpful. My current workflow, until ACR 8.6 and LR fully support the Nikon D810, are to use the DNG converter and import the resulting D810 DNG files into my LR catalog.
I have not yet tried this (traveling right now), but I assume I can still make a custom profile using the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport and it's associated software for my D810 using the RC 8.6 DNG files. This is my normal workflow for all of my other cameras in LR, but the process is direct from native RAW and not DNG (to produce the custom profile).

Until Lightroom gets D810 support, you will need to use the ACR plugin in order to see the profiles. The DNG Converter always uses Adobe Standard, and embeds it into the DNG. Lightroom 5.5 doesn't have the D810 profiles.

I have Photoshop Elements 12 for both PC and Mac (I use both). I have a new camera, Nikon D810. I downloaded the latest version of Camera Raw, 8.8. My D810 is listed as a supported camera model. However, when I try to open a raw photo in Photoshop Elements, I keep getting the message "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. I have tried reinstalling Camera Raw many times, and have tried to open many different raw files in Elements, and still get the same error message. Please help.

How did you try to install ACR 8.8.  The only way I know of that works with Elements is to use the Updates Choice on the Help menu.
There are two charts supplied by Adobe that explain your RAW dilemma.  This one tells you what your camera needs:  http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html   This one tells you what version of software you need:  http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
In your case, the Nikon D810 needs Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 8.6 or Lightroom 5.6.  (Congratulations on buying a new camera!)
To get to that level with Photoshop Elements, you will need to replace your Photoshop Elements 12 with version 13.   Adobe caps ACR updates on version 12 at 8.5.
The most convenient way to get around it without spending any money is to use the FREE from Adobe DNG Converter.  Download and install it from here for FREE:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5855&fileID=5890  Once it is installed you can convert your D810 raw files to an Adobe RAW version with the .DNG file extension that most, if not all, versions of the various Adobe software programs can use.  That includes old versions of Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom.  DNG converter can be used as the tool to move your files from your memory card to your computer, is efficient, will convert in batches and is completely lossless.  There is no risk of any image quality degradation or RAW functionality.

  • Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists

Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists follow link: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb407111. Have installed Bridge 5.0.2.4; Raw Ref Version 7.0.0.308; DNG converter_8_7_1.dmg; Bridge 5.0.2 Update 2. Also same problem with Lightroom which I don't normally use. Lightroom_3_LS11_mac_3_6.dmg installed.

In the link you posted it states that the Nikon 810 requires ACR 8.6 or newer.
Version of ACR are specific to versions of Photoshop. You cannot use 8.6 nor even 7.0.in CS5.
I believe that ACR 6.7 is the latest that will work with CS5, so make sure you have this installed and get rid of ACR 7.
Having 2 versions of ACR will cause problems.
You have already downloaded DNG Converter 8.7.1.
Have you double clicked the DMG file to allow you to install DNG Converter on your computer?
Be aware that DNG converter is a stand-along application and not a plug-in.
You need to open DNG converter at select the FOLDER that contain your .NEF files.
Don't open the folder and try to select individual files, it doesn't work that way.
After converting your D810 files to DNGs you can then open the DNGs in CS5
The problem is your camera didn't exist when CS5 & its version of ACR was developed.
i don't use Lightroom, but the list mentions Lightroom 5.6 as needed to open D819 so your 3.6 version of LR won't cut it.

  • NEF to DMG file conversion for  Nikon D810 and D800 cameras?

How do I open a Nikon D810 .NEF file and convert to a .DMG in Photoshop CC?

Do you mean DNG (Digital NeGative) instead of DMG?  If so, then you need a version of the camera raw plug-in that is new enough to support the D810 and then you can use the Save Image function in ACR to save a DNG.
If your intent is to convert many NEFs to DNGs then the standalone DNG Converter program may be more efficient.
The current version of ACR plug-in and DNGC are 8.7.1.  You can update the ACR plug-in by using Help / Updates in PS-CC (or log out and log back into the CC Desktop app) and you can get an updated DNGC from the Adobe Updates page:
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates
If you mean a Disk-iMaGe file then that’s something completely different and beyond the scope of Photoshop.

  • Raw files from the new Nikon D810 will not open with either Photoshop CS5.1 or Lightroom 4.  When will a real Adobe solution be available to work with Raw (NEF) files in their native format, using CS5.1 and LR4?

Raw files from the new Nikon D810 will not open with either Photoshop CS5.1 or Lightroom 4.  When will a real Adobe solution be available to work with Raw (NEF) files in their native format, using CS5.1 and LR4?

Clarification: this is a user forum; you are not addressing Adobe here.
The answer to your question as phrased is: never.
CS5 is history and it is not longer supported.  There will not be any updates or bug fixes for CS5.
You need to convert the raw NEF files from your D810 to raw DNGs using the free, standalone Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 RC (beta), the first version ever to support that camera..

  • Does anybody know if and when there will be a plug in for raw files from the Nikon D810? I have lightroom 4

I am considering buying a Nikon D810 but I do not want to be waiting for ages for a plug in for it's RAW files on my Lightroom 4. Does anybody know if and when there will be a plug in? I presume the 8.5 plug in will not cover the cameras Raw file.

There is no plug-in for Lightroom 4 that would ever give you support for the new camera. Lightroom does not use Camera Raw. Camera Raw is a plug-in for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. If you want support for your camera in Lightroom you will need to upgrade to Lightroom 5, and then wait for the 5.6 update which should be available within next few weeks (unless Lightroom 6 is introduced). In the meantime you can use the DNG converter (version 8.6 RC) to create DNG copies of your raw images that you would be able to open in Lightroom 4.

We have just released the final versions of ACR 8.6 and also Lightroom 5.6 tonight. You can now open all your NEF files from Nikon D810 in both applications.
