DNG compression on import

Hi,
I have NEF files with 24 MB. On one computer I have LR 2.3 with ACR 5.3. There, when I import and convert a file to DNG, it will be some 24 MB in size, because I chose in preferences not to compress. On another machine I have LR 2.4 with ACR 5.4, and the converted files here have some 12 MB. Of course, the "loss-less compression".
What makes me angry is that with this version of lightroom, I see no possibility to turn off compression. That means, LR is doing something that I am not happy with. I have been reading many posts about DNG compression, and I have the feeling there are things that we (the users) don't know.
I would like to keep my DNG files not compressed. Storage space is an issue of lesser importance for me, keeping the best possible file is of utmost importance. Even if they say compression is loss-less, I have the feeling it is only "almost" loss-less. Or else, why did they have in prior versions compressed and uncompressed?

Cosmo-
Compression is desired by many; others prefer to not compress, be it reasons of not being comfortable, or to pick up some tiny bit of speed. That's why there are choices. If you are concerned that your files are being diddled, perhaps you could leave them in RAW format?
Personally, I convert to DNG after culling and editing, not before, and I am fine with the lossless compression.

  • Convert to DNG on Auto Import?

    Maybe I'm missing something, but is there a way to convert RAW images to DNG during Auto Import?  It would speed up my workflow it there were a way to do it.
    Thank you.

    John,
    I can't speak for the original poster, but it would speed up my workflow considerably.  To get my RAW photos into my LR Catalog and a copy of the original into a backup directory manual import is less complicated, faster, and can be accomplished without leaving LR
    Without Auto Import:
    1. Start Lightroom
    2. File-->Import photos from Disk
    3. Select folder "Camera Import"
    4. [Import All folders in Selected Folder]
    5. [Import]
    5 clicks 0 keystrokes
    With Auto Import:
    1. Start Lightroom {Auto Import occurs}
    2. Ctrl-A (Selects all imported photos)
    3. Library-->Convert Photos to DNG
    4. [OK]
    5. Start-->filesearch "*.cr2 in Folder Pictures"
    6. Advanced Search-->Location-->Choose Search Directory-->DefaultUser-->Pictures-->Lightroom
    7. [Search]
    8. Ctrl-A (Select all), Cut
    9. Start-->Pictures-->Backup Directory-->Paste
    21 clicks 9 Keystrokes
    bwalkerinc, I haven't found anything on the "Import" tab in Preferences that will force DNG conversion on Auto Import.  My photos still Auto Import in their original format regardless of any changes made there.

  • DNG native camera lossless compression on import

    Hi. I have XP with  LR2.5 and Ps CS4 and ACR 5.5. My camera (Leica M8) produces DNG files as its native format.
    I am confused regarding methods to apply lossless compression to these DNG files. I have used this successfully previously but currently am unable to reproduce this function with LR2.
    I have lossless compression for DNG set in preferences. I am importing the files from the card and applying a change to the file, for example WB, then selecting update metadata and preview as a workaround. However file sizes do not appear to change.
    Since I have opened DNGs in another converter as well as in ACR too I am confused on where the lossless compression has been applied previously.
    I have successfully applied this compression with ACR in the past but am trying to learn the LR workflow.
    I am also unsure if I can have the lossless compression applied during import.
    Any pointers as to what I am now missing would be greatly appreciated.

    I don't think that in the workflow you describe there is any possibility for the data to become compressed by Lightroom. Updating metdata in a dng file does not touch the RAW data, so it is normal that the filesize does not change.
    I am also unsure if I can have the lossless compression applied during import.
    Any pointers as to what I am now missing would be greatly appreciated.
    You can set the import pane up to "copy photos as dng". I believe this recompresses the dng but I have never owned a camera that uses dng as its native format so I am not sure about that. Otherwise, you can after import "Convert photo to DNG" from the edit menu. This should also reconvert files that are already dng.

  • How can I compress an Imported Movie even further?

    I have a 20 second movie 230 x 129 size. The file size is 1.2 mb. I then imported it into Flash. After it's all said and done the finall SWF is 1.7 mb. I plan to put this on my homepage, but I want the file to be smaller. I reduced the flash .jpg and output settings to their lowest but the file remaied at 1.7 mb so this tells me the imported movie is causing the large file size here.
    Is there something I can do to make my imported movie smaller so my resulting SWF is under 1 MB.
    Update:
    I just compressed the QT movie to 520 kb (the old movie size was 1.2 mb) and then imported it into my Flash file, then I published the SWF and the file size was still 1.7 mb. This means the Flash SWF file with an imported movie of 1.2 MB movie is the same File size as a Flash SWF file with an imported movie size of 520 kb. This doesn't make sense to me as the SWF file size should be a lot lower.
    1.2 mb imported movie. SWF file size = 1.7 mb
    520 kb imported movie. SWF file size = 1.7 mb
    What's up with that?

    i went through your instructions and with the trace event, thanks
    its looping now.. but only once and with a very noticeable gap in between
    import fl.video.VideoEvent;
    function onMouseClick(e:Event):void
        //navigate to next page from here
        trace("http://www.transformingscotland.com/?page_id=42");
    portal7.autoRewind = true;
    //Assign mouse event listener to player. In this case MouseDown player_name.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MouseDown, onMouseClick);
    portal7.addEventListener(VideoEvent.COMPLETE,onComplete);
    //Above eventListener checks to see if playback has finished/completed //So the onComplete function is called if finished
    function onComplete(e:VideoEvent):void
         //The autoRewind will reset to first frame and stop
        //Try one of the following below...Uncomment one at a time and try it...
        //player_name.source = URLFILETOPLAY;  OR
        //player_name.play();
         portal7.seek(0);  // <---This should position it a movie frame 0
         portal7.play("http://www.transformingscotland.com/wp-content/themes/Amirra/Amirra/images/portalavi.flv");
    ps - there's the ability to add fvars via the flash embed plugin that i use on the site.. (wordpress) not sure if that could be utilised for the hyperlinking?

  • Compression for oracle database and index compression during import of data

    Hi All,
    I have a query , in order to import into oracle database and also have compression and index compression , do we have some kind of load args for r3load and also do we have to change the tpl file ?

    Hello guy,
    I did this kind of compression within migration project before.
    I performed index compress first and then export -> import with table compress.
    One thing you should take care, delete nocompress flag from TARGET.SQL (created by program SMIGR_CREATE_DDL, program SMIGR_CREATE_DDL created pure non-compression objects for these considered non-standard tables). For table columns > 255, we should not delete this flag.
    Regarding to the index compress in source system, please check the following notes:

  • Compression when importing video

    i exported a DV-PAL file from FCP using 'Quicktime Conversion', the file size came out as 4,4 GB. However when importing the file into DSP, the disc capacity meter is at 1.8 GB.
    Can one control by how much the file gets compressed during the import process, or does one need to use compressor to create a higher resolution MPEG-2 before?
    up until now i have imported Quicktime files into DSP, but the compression is rather big!

    When you export a movie from Final Cut, even with codecs such as DV, they are going to be larger than a MPEG-2, since MPEG-2 is compressed format. It will, by definition, have "lower" quality since it is compressed. But that does not mean you cannot get good results.
    Take a look here

  • DNG compression

    compressed seems to be the default when saving a DNG now. there is a check box for uncompressed but no description of whether the default it is lossless or lossy. there was a compression "lossless" check box in CS3. DNG spec says JPEG compression but mention both lossless and lossy. Does anyone have the straight scoop?
    Thanks,
    David

    Thanks Vit.
    The spec is vague on what type of jpeg compression is used
    "Two Compression tag values are supported:
    • Value = 1: Uncompressed data.
    • Value = 7: JPEG compressed data, either baseline DCT JPEG, or lossless JPEG compression
    If PhotometricInterpretation = 6 (YCbCr) and BitsPerSample = 8/8/8, or if PhotometricInterpretation = 1 (BlackIsZero) and BitsPerSample = 8, then the JPEG variant must be baseline DCT JPEG.
    Otherwise, the JPEG variant must be lossless Huffman JPEG. For lossless JPEG, the internal width/length/components in the JPEG stream are not required to match the strip or tile's width/length/components. Only the total sample counts need to match. It is common for CFA images to be encoded with a different width, length or component count to allow the JPEG compression predictors to work across like colors."
    It can be interpreted that lossy compression is used for the preview image but it is not clear.

  • DNG files wont import

    I've been shooting with Hasselblad for a few years, the workflow is as follows.
    Import 3fr direct into Lightroom or when shooting tethered direct into Phocus I export a dng from Phocus and import the dng into Lightroom.
    Sometime ago (over a year ago) I was having the same problem, today it reared its sweet face again......  .
    When I try and import dng files into lightroom I can seethe thumbnails in the import screen. When I try and import nothing hapens and I have to resatrt lightroom.
    I've tried the following.
    Import at the same location
    Import and copy to a new location
    Import and rename the files.
    I’ve created a new set of DNG files from bridge and tried to import them.
    I just downloaded 3.5rc , the problem remains.
    Really need to get the files imported and on with work.
    Thanks in advance  for a speedy answer.

    Found a solution.
    I have just run "Clean my Mac", things seem to be working again. It appears to have been someething perhaps in the Cache.

  • Lightroom 5 keeps changing my NEF-RAW Files to .dng files upon import

    I am currently using a Nikon D7100 and recording my photos in the Raw/NEF-RAW format.  Recently, whenever I am uploading my photos to Lightroom 5, my photos are changing to .dng files rather than staying in the NEF file.  When I go and look back at my previous imports from the past few times, they are in NEF and NOT in .dng.  Why is this doing this and how do I turn this feature off so that my files remain the same going from my camera to my computer through importation.  Thanks!

    When you are importing your files, do you have the "Copy As DNG" option selected in the top-centre of your import screen?

  • Importing DNG - no adjustments imported

    hi,
    i am trying to import a large project which i worked on (4000+) images.
    i worked on this project before installing aperture. in my previous workflow i was using ACR to do the raw editing/first conversion, then convert the files in DNG and import them in IVMP. so the DNG preview would be matching the file adjustment.
    i just imported the project in aperture, and no adjustment come through. no WB, no exposure, nothing.
    what can i do? doesn't aperture support DNG? am i doing something wrong? i cannot rework the 20000+ images i shot since using DNG....
    thanks,
    @lberto

    Here's my understanding...
    When you adjust a RAW image with ACR (a RAW converter), the settings are saved in an XMP sidecar because ACR doesn't like to modify a RAW file. But when you adjust and save to a DNG file the settings that would otherwise be saved in the XMP sidecar are saved in the DNG. Adobe can do this because Adobe created both ACR and DNG. (Also, Adobe wants you to use Photoshop.) The settings saved in the DNG are just instructions that tell ACR and only ACR (at present) how to process the RAW image when it is brought into Photoshop.
    ACR saves an updated preview thumbnail in the DNG and that is what you see in IVMP and PhotoMechanic. IVMP and PhotoMechanic are not RAW converters. In other words, they can't take the ACR instructions inside the DNG and change the RAW to a JPEG, TIFF, or PSD. They just let you see the preview thumbnail. They don't care about the original RAW data because they are not RAW converters, so they don't need to show you the original. They show you the adjusted preview thumbnail so you will use their program in conjunction with your Photoshop workflow.
    Capture One is another RAW converter. It cannot take ACR conversion instructions and apply them in Capture One because CO uses it's own conversion algorithms. The same with the proprietary camera manufacturer's RAW conversion software.
    Aperture is also a RAW conversion software that uses its own conversion algorithms. It is not Photoshop, so it cannot use Photoshop's ACR conversion data. When you load an adjusted DNG into Aperture it initially sees the adjusted preview. But then Aperture builds a thumbnail with the original RAW data (as it should) because Aperture adjusts the RAW master file.
    White balance, exposure, and other adjustments settings are not imported into Aperture. I would not expect them to be. Those are ACR (Photoshop) adjustment instructions, not Aperture adjustment instructions.
    Even Lightroom, another Adobe program that offers RAW conversion, does not currently read the ACR adjustments from a DNG. Load adjusted DNGs into the current beta of Lightroom and it does the same thing as Aperture. It looks past the ACR generated preview in the DNG and creates a preview from the RAW data. However, being an Adobe product, you might expect Lightroom to eventually be able to read the ACR adjustment data in a future version. Lightroom may be the route you will eventually have to take to perserve your many adjustments unless you are willing to convert your DNGs to TIFFs or PSDs and import those into Aperture.
    I believe the DNG specification was intended to create a standard in the RAW file format (unadjusted). It is not a standard for transferring image adjustments between diverse RAW converters.
    Again, this is just how I understand it...

  • Compressing and importing from Final Cut into Flash

    Hi,
    I am trying to import a short film into Flash to create a swf file which I want to use on the web.
    I compressed the film to a smaller Quicktime film and imported it into Flash, worked fine, but I don't get any sound.I did mark the box import audio.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks
    Silke

    extract the audio from your original movie and attach it to your SWF
    dunno too much about Flash, but you should try importing your audio and video as seperate assets
    or forget flash - u could just put it up as a movie (QT,MP4,WMV(!).....) or create an animated gif (e.g. with fireworks) and attach the audio file to it......
    good luck!

  • DNG files are importing into premiere pro cc with heavy pink tint what to do?

    I have tryed  many things to remove the pink to no avail, out side of importing through After Effects cc. What else Ican i try? Is there  a fiix in the works?

    This happens with certain video DNG files from particular cameras. Search here for dng import problems and you'll find threads about it ... including a recent one where someone found a look or LUT that could be applied to make the footage usable apparently.

  • How to compress/adjust imported videos in Final Cut Pro and iMovie?

    Right:  what the video looks like when played in iMovie or Final Cut Pro.

    the right shot is a 16:9 project (1920/1080 or 1280/720) with a stretched-to-fit 4.3 video.
    If you want an un-stretched project, set it to 4:3 manually when you create a New project, or use the transform-tool and resize the video - which will add bars l/r or chops-off t/b of the video...

  • How can I import cinema dng files in Premiere Pro CC?

    Hi,
    I wanna use Blackmagic Cinema DNG 4k RAW files for my productions in Premiere. As specified by Adobe that schould be no problem.
    When I import the dng-folder or a list of *.dng files they are displayed in assets view as single photos. How can I create a video track from these "photo batches" in the sequence window?
    Much thanks in advance for any help !!!
    Cheers Peer

    Good Peer, glad that solves the import problem for you. I suspect the next version of Premiere CC might not have its import path split with two different results as such.
    Back in CS6 I was importing all media through the Project bin. Then with the first Premiere CC, compressed dng from the bmpcc became supported (I think your 4K just became supported recently). So, with the new CC, I kept importing all files through the project bin, and that resulted in hours of import time, and the same hours of re-conforming the same files every time I re-opened the project. And, the same hours of time direct linking into Speedgrade (by the way I love Resolve also).
    Then, months later, I heard of importing through the Media Browser and all that time melted away into instantaneous import and quick direct link to Speedgrade.
    If you have any projects with dng sequence files imported through the Project bin, I do not remember the exact procedure, it is simple though, just 'make offline' and almost certain it is 'replace footage' to properly Media Browser imported video.
