Dng converter not producing thumbnails, set to do so

My conversions are not producing thumbnails, despite me setting it to do so. I don't know what is going on.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the question.
Based on my test, please try to following configurations.
In addition, please let us know if you have RD Connection Broker installed in your domain.
Hope this helps.

DNG converter not converting RAW files from Canon 70D (it does not see them). I tried DNG converter version 8.2 and 8.4. No success. I use iMac. What is wrong?

hopefully, that's a typo on adobe's website because they list the canon 70d as using a .cs2 file extension, http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
i don't see any other camera that uses a .cs2 extension and i don't see other people having problems, so that probably is a typo.
in any case, cr 8.2 or better is able to convert your camera's raw files.  why you are having a problem i can't say, but double check that you are navigating to the correct folder by adding a file that will show up in your dng converter.

  • DNG files not showing thumbnails preview icon on mac, after reduce/resize pixel count. Mavericks 10.9.2, Photoshop CC, ACR 8.4.0.199. Any Solution?

This is driving me crazy. With today's huge file sizes it seem to me that for the majority of pictures a pixel count of 12-16 mega pixels y more than ok size for editing and make printings; for the professional jobs is a good idea to have the biggest file we can. Due to that i was trying to convert some NEF files to DNG, saving some space in the process, But the impossibility to preview the picture's thumbnails and the file size (it displays 0x0) immediately take me to 1984, (Windows 3.11). and those are bad memories.
I don't know if this is an apple's or adobe's error, but it needs to be solved.
         Anyone with the same predicament?

Thanks for your insight JimHess.  Someone else on another post pointed out how Photoshop changes the color profile and other things and then trying to make this file into a DNG again confuses Mavericks (and, presumably, other flavors of OS X).  Admittedly, the process I described is unorthodox and not what may want to do.  Thank you.
A.J.: First, I am offended by your suggestion to omit my comment.  I was simply trying to provide help in finding a cause of a general problem people are having across the internet.  That problem, as you pointed out, is that modifying a DNG in some way in photoshop results in the thumbnail no longer being visible.  Your modification is the size.  Mine was not.  But it was a general modification in photoshop and an attempt to reconstitute the file as a DNG that seems to be common theme, whether this workflow makes sense or not.  Additionally, I'm very new to digital photography and tried to be helpful.  I would advise you (as an educator who knows the consequences of negative first-time experiences) to be more mindful that not everyone on here is as experienced as you and everyone can benefit from being clearer in their questions and their comments.
Second, as JimHess pointed out, in manipulating a DNG file in any of the programs in a way that alters the actual file (not changing some setting that is ultimately stored in a side-car file or does not actually alter the photo) is probably the root of the problem.  Changing the file size by altering pixel count may first require one of your adobe products to physically alter the file information in a way that stops Mavericks from being able to recognize the contents as RAW information.  Does this make sense?
    Best regards,
    Robert

  • Sony RX100 raw files converted with DNG converter not recognizable

Since  installing Maverick 10.9.4 on the Mac, Sony RX100 raw files converted with DNG converter are no more recognizable.
    Somebody else the same problem?

I know my DNG files themselves and the info they contain are fine. But they're not properly supported in Mavericks 10.9.4 and I don't plan on switching to Windows. A file that I converted to a DNG using Adobe software is now listed as an unrecognized file in OSX. No thumbnails, no iPhoto, no Aperture. Essentially, no support. And this is a problem. A quick search will show you people with various Sony cameras (A7, RX100 mkI and mkIII, at least) having the same problem.
No matter where the blame falls, the simple fact is that if you shoot with various Sony cameras, use Adobe software to convert the file to DNG and happen to be an OSX user, you're files are no longer compatible with OSX or Apple's photo software. They will only open in Adobe software. You literally get a warning message from OSX saying, this is an unsupported file type when you try and open it.
Like I said previously, I've had a managed iPhoto library for about 5 years now, numerous hours of tagging and organzing, and every DNG file converted from a Sony ARW RAW is currently unsupported. Original ARW files work just fine. It's nuts. Maybe it's Adobe's fault. Maybe it's Apple's fault. It really doesn't matter. If DNG is not a reliable standard format under certain edge cases (Sony ARW, DNG converter, OSX Mavericks), it's not a reliable standard format at all. I just hope that Apple or Adobe figures this out, so that I can get those photos back.
In the mean time, certain users such as myself just can't rely on DNG. End of story.

  • Latest DNG converter not working in command-line mode

Today I downloaded Adobe's latest DNG converter. It is failing with both .NEF and .CR2 files when run in command-line mode. It does appear to work in GUI mode. The switches+arguments I've used for my tests are:
    -u -e -p1 filename.CR2
    (or filename.NEF)
With an older (CS2) version of the converter, the above arguments produce a .DNG output file as expected (with .CR2 files; I didn't try it with D3 .NEF files; surely that older version doesn't support the D3's format).
With the very latest version, running the program with the above command produces no output. There's no error message.
The 'readme' file that comes with the converter doesn't include any information about command-line usage, but I did find a PDF file covering this (adobe.com/products/dng/pdfs/dng_commandline.pdf). The switches+arguments shown in the PDF file appear to be exactly the ones I used in the past.
I'm sure I'll need to use the most recent version to convert D3 RAW files. Is there something wrong with how I'm specifying its command-line switches/arguments?

It struck me silly that I've been running tests with v.3.3 when 5.2 is the latest, so I downloaded it. The setup "wizard"...hmm, why is it a "wizard"? It provides no choice of installation path. I didn't realize this because immediately after I'd launched it, I knocked something onto the floor, reached down to pick it up ... and looked back up just in time to see the "wizard" complete the installation...but where, I didn't know. It didn't display any information about where it had installed the app. Adventures In Discoverability. :) I hunted around on the hard drive until I found it (C:\Program Files\Adobe -- well, at least you can launch it if you think to look for it in the 'Start' menu). So ... that needs a bit of work. Anyway, I copied the app into a directory of my choice -- one that's in my system's %PATH%, replacing spaces in the name with underscores. It works fine in that directory -- no problem with the name-change as far as I can tell. Now back to the fun stuff...
This version doesn't seem to require a fully qualified path to the input file or to the output directory when "-d" is used. That's an improvement. IOW, this worked:
    converter -p1 -d DNG filename
where "converter" is the program's name, "DNG" is the name of a subdirectory of the directory where I'm running the test, and "filename" is the name of a RAW file in that directory.
The program still doesn't know how to create a directory (or ask about creating one if it doesn't exist). Fails silently if "-d" is used and the specified directory doesn't exist. But at least this version returns an exit code of 1 due to the failure -- better than returning 0.
Still doesn't understand wildcards. Hope done sprang eternal there for a moment, but oh well. Back to "for" loops...
Still fails silently, returning exit code 0 (oops), if a nonsensical command-line is used (e.g., using "-c" as the only argument).
Hey, how about a truly silly command-line error -- a command line including both "-c" and "-u". What happens? It "consumes" the first of the two mutually exclusive switches, ignoring the second -- you get a compressed DNG file. Swap the order of the switches, and you get an uncompressed file. (I'd vote for a syntax-error message in that case, m'self.)
Interestingly strange little program...If I run it from the command line, it drops back to the command line immediately after I press ENTER. That makes it appear to have failed. But it hasn't -- it's running in the background, and a few seconds later the DNG file is created. But, if I run it from within a batch file, it does NOT return control to me until it has completed writing the output file. Wonder what's up with that.
    Fun stuff. :)

  • Leica X1 DNG files not viewable thumbnails in Media Expression

    Hi-
I just bought a Leica X1 which shoots raw in DNG format but the raw DNG files it creates to not display thumbnails in Media Expression (formerly a micorsoft product, now Phase one).
    I am running mac OS X 10.6.4
One "solution" offered in the Leica forum was to run the Leica DNG file in DNG converter... I did and it worked but that is a really really clumsy solution to what I feel should not be a problem.... and renaming and deleting original files etc it a real PITA if you shoot any number of photos.
I know that Nikon had issues with new versions of NEF files which had something to do with "header changes" in the NEF file before ACR could decode them, and I'm wondering if there is some similar issue with DNG that I am not aware of.
Any information would greatly be appreciated.
    cheers,
    tom

the "appear for a moment" is probably Aperture showing the preview image in the .raw file, before deciding that it can't handle the raw image data.
(If it is this, then odds are Finder will show the images but Preview.app will also fail to.)
Clearly MacOS understands the .raw file format, but thinks that it doesn't have support for however your camera identifies itself in the EXIF data. Modifying the Raw.plist is the way to try, for now.

  • Dng Converter not working in Bridge

    Hi
I have CS3 and have already downloaded the latest version of the DNG converter.  When I use the Converter as a separate application, it works fine to convert my RAW files to DNG files.  Recently I discovered the process in Bridge called "Get Photos from Camera" where I can process many steps with one click.  Unfortunately, the part where it is suppose to convert my RAW to DNG files isn't working.  Any ideas why?  Some background info, I recently upgraded from Vista 64bit to Windows 7 64bit.  I uninstalled PS CS3 and then installed it back, and it's working fine except for this one little step.  Do I need to install the DNG converter again, but designate it to put loaded into a different folder so that Bridge recognizes it ?  Would appreciate any support or feedback.  Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.

The camera I am using is the Canon 5D MkII.  Raw images from this camera can not be read by my version of Camera Raw V.4.6.  The readable version for CR V4.6 is DNG Converter V5.5.  This is all for my PS CS3.
I discovered this Bridge process in a Scott Kelby Book, for CS3, called "Get Photos for Camera".  He specifically goes thru each step, and the second step is the DNG Conversion process.  It worked for him.  It should work for me.
Ah, but did he do it for images from a 2009 camera with a 2007 version of PS?

  • DNG Converter Not Recognizing .CR2 Files

I have a new Canon EOS 5D Mark II and CS3, so I cannot view the CR2 files from the 5D in Bridge in their native format.  I read all the posts and upgraded to ACR 4.6, then upgraded the camera profiles to those in the ACR 5.2 package (the one that includes the 5D Mark II).
I then read that I need the DNG Converter to generate DNG files from the CR2 files, so I have installed DNG 6.3.
Problem now is that the DNG Converter will not recognize any CR2 files on my machine, neither the new 5D Mark II CR2 files of my old Rebel CR2 files.  When I navigate to a folder containing CR2 files with DNG it says "No images have been selected" in the "Select images to convert" section of the GUI.
I have no idea what to do, I need to get the DNG Converter working to view the files from my new camera in Bridge.  Help!

I wish I could say your solution worked - but it didn't! I have a Canon T2i, the very latest version of the  Adobe "converter" (8.4) - and it refuses to recognize/find any Canon RAW (i.e. CR2) files. My desktop is 2 years old with lot of horsepower, Win 7, plain vanilla etc.
Step 1: Folder Selected ("Bonaire 2006")
    folder selected.jpg
    2. When I press "Convert", I get:
    No CR2 files recognized.jpg
    Another view of the problem:
after getting this: (BTW "Bonaire" is stuffed with CR2 files). Same problem all folders
no items match your search - say what.jpg
I've used a thousand utility programs for any number of purposes - something is amiss here - prompts or not!

  • DNG converter not functioning

I use DNG converter just about every day of my life. I'm on PC Win764. After a big archiving session where I used lossy conversion on several thousand files to crunch down the size, DNG Convereter has stopped working. Here's a screenshot:
None of the grayed out panels work or respond. I uninstalled (V 7.2) by deleting the DNG.exe from C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe and reinstalled  and restarted. The issue was unchanged. So I uninstalled and reverted to V7.1. Exactly the same. Next I uninstalled and ran the new V7.3. Exactly the same.
Fortunately I can run my conversions on another identical Win7 64 PC on the network, but it's not ideal of course. Any ideas?
    Regards, Paul Wright

My nearby computer expert took a look at this, and was able to solve the problem for me. He noted...
The problem was a corrupted settings entry in the Windows registry. When the following hex value was deleted, functionality was restored:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\DNG Converter\7.0\Preferences
Presumably the registry entry got corrupted somehow, but the DNG Converter software should not have been affected in this way. The software should be able to detect and repair/replace corrupted settings.
If Adobe engineers wish to replicate the error, what follows is the corrupted registry entry:

I've seen a couple of threads on this matter, but nonE which report the problem as being solved. I downloaded the lastest DNG 7.4 onto my Mac 10.5.8 for use with Photoshop CS4, but as soon as I try and open the application it comes up with this message. Any Advice?
    Many Thanks

Try installing directly too the desktop rather than applications.
Make sure you are using the correct download link:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5257
You then need to launch from the desktop icon and:
    1. elect the folder of arw images you would like to convert to DNG.
    2. Select the location you would like the new DNG files to be saved.
    3. Choose rename if desired.
    4. Click convert.
