DNG format capture on Xperia devices.

This is my first post on this forum. Just a quick question, why did sony remove the "RAW image capture capabilities" that are being rolled out with the lollipop update.
Please make the camera 2 api available in the default camera app during manual shooting. It will help a lot!!! (And 16:9 ratio little higher than 15mp too )
Moreover there are many bugs to be solved in the lollipop update like X-reality and Super Vivid, the per app colour does not match my apps (whatsapp, facebook) and moreover, the close all button in the recents screen, covers the right side of google search bar and looks ugly!( I sometimes noticed the searchbar vanishes and there is only a 'g' logo of google font and a mic below it, that looks awesome. Dont know if it is a bug, or supposed to be that way.) I expected more from this software update.
Fairly disappointed.

@adryanosss
RAW would be great but not everyone know what to do with RAW files. But do contact Sony directly regarding this

When you make a DNG that's like making another raw file, so you will need to convert the DNG file just like your original raw. Don't use the Save button in the raw converter. That's just a link to the DNG converter. Normally you would click Open instead and then save in the editor as a jpg or other image format of your choice.

  • Image Capture shows no devices (again)

    Hi,
    I have a MacBook Air (2012) running Mac OS X 10.9.1, 1.8GHz Intel Core i5, with 4GB ram.
I have a Cannon MP510, it shows up on the list of printers in the System Preferences.
I had a similar problem with the previous operating system (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5419672)
I now have a Time Capsule and I have tried connecting the printer to my laptop with USB and also via the Airport Time Capsule (both by USB).
The MP510 show up in Printers & Scanners but no Scan, and Image Capture shows no devices as being found.
    I have looked at:
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_s eries/pixma_mp510#DriversAndSoftware
But they have no drivers for 10.9.1 but I did try the driver for 10.8 again.
I have made sure that the printer is in Scan mode, I have tried Scan to PC, and Scan to PDF. (There isnt a Scan to Mac)
Any ideas on how I can get my MacBook to detect that the MP510 is also a scanner so that I can use image capture (or any other free software) to get scanned images on to my Mac?
    Thanks,
    Mulder

I have downloaded Cannon's MP Navigator and it says that it cannot communicate with the scanner, Scanner driver will be closed, and number 155.0.0

  • Is the DNG format really 'universal'?

I have just aquired a new camera - the Panasonic GX7. Unfortunately Aperture does not yet support its RAW files.
As a workaround I downloaded the Adobe DNG converter in the belief that the DNG format could be imported into Aperture. The converter lists a range of output options from Camera RAW 2.1 up to 7.1. None work with Aperture 3.4.5.
It would seem that DNG compatibility is very dependant on the original source file. DNGs from some cameras work in Aperture while others do not. I know some people blame Apple for this but surely the problem is that the DNG format is not standard. A standard PDF can be read by any PDF reader but it seems there is no such thing as a 'standard DNG'. Is this a reasonable assessment of the situation?
    cheers
    Bruce

I think, you got it right, Bruce.
The dng generated from a camera can be camera-specific and Aperture does not support them all: see the footnotes in this document.
Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
Aperture also lets you work with most DNG files.1
Aperture works with most DNG files generated from cameras that support this format and with DNG files generated by the Adobe DNG Converter with the “Convert to Linear Image” option turned off.
It appears to be random, if Adobe's dng converter will work. I used to be able to convert the raw from my camera to a dng that Aperture can import, but since the last update to dng-converter does that no longer work.  The older dngs are fine.

  • Apple's support of DNG format is fallacious

on the Aperture brag page http://www.apple.com/aperture/ it purports "It also supports the Adobe DNG format."
I went to Bridge/ACR, grabbed five tweaked nikon NEFS and saved them as DNG files.
I imported this new folder of these five tweaked DNG files into Aperture. It did open the DNG files, but none of the adjustments to the image where evident and the display was the unaltered RAW file.
Sorry Appleture, that does not constitute SUPPORT of the DNG format. DNG is not just another RAW format, it is a RAW format with the adjustments included.
This is the last straw for me. Time to cut my losses.
I am going to eBay my Academic copy of Aperture for $200. I am a huge fan of Apple products, but not Aperture. IF this was an intro price of $49 then I would not complain.
This is nothing more than a improvement to iPhoto, but not enough to be called "iPhoto Pro".

I absolutely agree, never did argue the point that Aperture did not pick up the DNG info. Just said that Bridge embeds info into the DNG. I also agree that this is a very large sticking point I have with Aperture. I just hope they offer the option of embedding informaition into the exported files as well as the ability to change the name of the file after importing. I understand their desire not to touch the files, but given that I would bet 99.9% of photographers would want to edit down first and then change the names on the keepers I think the developers need to change their paradigm on not touching the original files, after all, that was the idea behind DNG.
    Imagine 2 workflows.
    The current Aperture:
    Open Aperture
    Import 500 files
    Cull out 200 files.
    Keep 300 files
Don't bother correcting because of the need to export and all the metadata will be lost.
    Export the keepers.
Delete the remaining 300 files in Aperture
    Open Bridge
    Open the just exported files.
    Wait for them to load.
Rename the files to what you want because Aperture forces a space in the name and you do not want that space.
Enter all the file shoot info so if you export from Aperture, the metadata info that was imported within Aperture stays with the file and only that info.
    Close Bridge
Reimport 300 renamed files back into Aperture
    Done, I think.....
    A new Aperture (Hopefully)
    Open Aperture
Import 500 Files color correcting on the fly to see if they are keepers.
    Cull 200 Files
    Rename the remaining 300 files.
    Enter all file shoot info.
    Done
The new Aperture now writes all the info back to the original file including filename, metadata etc. Everytime you export or open in Photoshop, Aperture passes the filename and metadata info along. Life is good.
Granted they currently do not want to write into the file, but most of us would prefer it so when we send something to a client we do not have to keep reentering it. Furthermore, all of us would be doing it anyway, just in a different app., so whats the difference? I am very very hopeful they will correct this quickly in a future version, if not, it is a deal breaker for me, not to mention the other deal breakers it currently has.

  • DNG Format incompatible to Photoshop CS2 ?

Hello, I'm using since several years Lightroom beginng from the Version 1.0 to the actual Version 5.7.
Now I have a big problem with the DNG-Format. I export my photo files after developping as DNG.
Importing these DNG-Files to Photoshop (CS2 with ACR 3.7) was never a big problem.
Now several very important corrections are lost in Photoshop. For example the exposure correction.
    What has happened?
Thanks a lot for any helping answers

Did you double check that you have the DNG export backwards compatible to ACR 3.7 (2.4 and later)?

  • Browse files on Xperia device - Sony Bridge for Mac

is it just me, or is using the Sony bridge for mac's "Browse files on Xperia device" pretty useless?
Sure you can see what files are on the device, but if you right click there are no options... you can't hit space bar to view pics on the device and even double clicking on a file does NOTHING! Isn't there something else I could rather use other than Sony Bridge for Mac to view my devices files?

Not a Mac expert but with Windows based systems you can open the Computers connected devices page and then open the device to view files meaning Pc Companion is not needed

  • Will edited Raw files retain the xmp edited information when converting to DNG format?

I have a bunch of old nikon and canon Raw files that was edited in Photoshop Camera Raw.  The Raw files have corresponding xmp files.  I want to convert these edited Raw files into DNG format.  Using the Photoshop Camera Raw converter or using the free Adobe DNG Converter tool - will the edited information from the Raw files be automatically converted over to DNG? What would be the best method to convert an edited RAW  file into a DNG file, and retain all the editing (xmp files)? Thanks for help!!!

Using either the dng converter or camera raw though PS and Bridge will convert your RAW files to dng and keep the edited info from your xmp files, which will be add into the dng format.  If you have a lot of files to convert, it might be faster to use the dng converter.  Next choice would be to select them all in Bridge, right click and select "Open in Camera Raw."

  • Is the DNG format less useful now that LR is here?

    Hi
I was wondering what other people's thoughts were on the continued usefulness of the DNG format now that we have LR.
Obviously the DNG is still useful if you want to export a RAW image file with all its development settings without using a sidecar file. But is there any reason to convert all your RAW files into DNG files if all of your adjustments (and preview images) are going to be stored in the LR database anyway?
I found that using DNG files in ACR was painful since the updated preview image had to be written back into the DNG file - which added a significant processing delay. I have not yet checked if this is an issue in LR.
    Any comments?
    Regards, Nigel

    Hi Nigel,
You describe your "painful" experience with DNG caused by the preview update in ACR.
Please note that you can customize if ACR writes previews into the DNG file and I agree that if yiu use this option it slows down the update significantly.
But you don't have to. If you use Bridge for example, Bridge takes care of the Previews and you do not need a preview in the DNG
However LR never updates the DNG with previews because the previews are stored in the LR database which gives you nice small DNG files.
But all this has nothing to do with the usefullness of DNG. If you don't find it usefull just don't use it. I personally are very convinced that DNG streamlines my workflow and I admit that I delete my originals and stick totally with DNG and with 3 weeks of LR usage I am even more convinced by my decision

  • Pulling packet capture from IPS device

I work for a MSP (Managed Services Provider), we currently are evaluating CSM for mgt of 50 IPS/IDSM devices. To make analysis more effective, want to be able to pull the packet capture from the device. We have our own correlation engine, so we do not need MARS. We want to grab the packet and then put a copy into our ticketing system so the analyst has the data right in front of them.
Is the IP Log directory where the packet capture data is kept? Has anyone ever tried this before? What are the performance/health concerns with enabling packet captures for just high signatures? Does the IP log directory really "clean" itself out after a certain period of time?

There are 4 event actions that can be used to capture packets.
The produce-verbose-alert event action will encode the trigger packet as part of the alert itself. So with this event action the packet is already included in the alerts you are already pulling off the sensor. You just need to modify your tool to strip off this packet, decode it, and then add it to your ticketing system at the same time as you add the alert.
This is where I would start.
Using the produceVerboseAlert uses very little additional sensor resources. It has only a very small affect on sensor performance. Because each alert will be larger than normal it will reduce the total number of alerts that can be stored in the sensor's eventstore. But if your application is actively subscribing for these events, then the reduction in total number of alerts stored on the sensor should not cause you any issues. So adding this for all High alerts woulc be a good practice.
The other 3 event actions are log-attacker-packets, log-pair-packets, and log-victim-packets. These event actions will trigger an IP Log (packet log) to be created (or increase the time for capture on an existing IP Log.
The IP Log system is a collection of numbered files on the sensor. As event actions trigger new IP Logs to be created the sensor will pick one of those numbered files and begin writing packets to that file. The sensor retains an internal mapping of what packets are being written to each file. If no empty files exist, then the sensor will automatically overwrite the oldest IP Log file with the new IP Log file. Larger platforms have up to 512 of these numbered files, and smaller platforms may have as few as 128 or even 64 of these numbered files. Each file is 1 Megabyte in size and usually stored in RAM memory. With the limited number of files, the storage of these logs on the sensor is very short term. And so should be pulled off the sensor as soon as possible (just like what you are planning to implement). The sensor also has a usual limit of only writing 20 IP Log files at any one time.
With these limitations on the IP Log files they shoudl be used sparingly. Configuring too many signatures or signatures that trigger often with these event actions can lead to problems. The IP Logs could easily be overwritten by newer IP Logs being triggered, and/or more than 20 could be requested at any one time which means some alerts won't be able to have an IP Log created.
So IP Logging event actions should be limited to only those alerts where the additional data is manditory.
Also understand that IP Logging can have a negative impact on sensor performance. If you plan on using IP Logging often, then consider using a sensor rated for higher speeds than what you will be monitoring.

  • Multi-Format captures

What is the most budget friendly way to enable one to do multi-format captures.
there are some decks out there like the JVC one that can play VHS, 8mm, Hi8 but the price tag is around $700 bucks. There is also the option off buying one of sony's digital 8 camcorders with passthrough, which would enable me to play and send to computer 8mm, hi8, and digital 8, and connect a vcr and via passthrough capture a vhs tape; this way is much cheaper.
However, if I was to purchase a digital 8 camcorder for this purpose (though not solely) would I be esentially investing in archaic technology, and thus be wasting my money.
What are some other options for multi-format captures--I would be capturing with imovie, and possibly avid free dv, when I decide to learn it better.
    Thanks for your help

Hi ba15ck - Digital 8 still works well and is a sensible choice if you have lots of VHS, and other non-digital 8mm material to transfer.
Just be aware that since iMovie 4 there has been an issue with direct pass-through. Whereas with iMovie 4 it would work without tape in the camera, later versions required a tape inserted, and recording done onto that. A workaround was to make the camera connection to the computer with the tape in the camera, then remove the tape. Someone with actual experience of this may wish to comment.
Some people who have retained iMovie 4 use that for the import, then convert the project into an iMovie HD project for the editing.

  • Capturing using DV device

So I have a digital converter attached to my MAC with firewire that I run my camera through to capture video. Before I was capturing to imovie, then transfering to FCE. As noted by Tom, that was a poor way to get video into FCE.
So I read the section on capturing video from his book. I went to easy setup and changed the preference to DV conveter with fire wire (as noted in his book this would allow you to capture without having time code). When I do this the capture device says "no connection" or something to that effect. But if I switch it in easy set up to "Fire Wire", it allows me to capture, but it is looking for time code, which breaks up the footage every now and then. Am I missing the all important step?

OK. Here is where I got confused. I was using the *DV-NSTC DV Converter* option instead of DV-NTSC. I have changed the "capture now limited" to 60 minutes (about the time of the footage). If I understand things correctly, the DV-NTSC is used for items without time code. But the tape (an old VHS tape) keeps coming up with "Locating Timebreak Push esc to stop". Is that because the tape is so old that there are blank spots? When we watch it in the VCR there are no blank spots or areas that cut out. Should I be trying to capture at DV-NTSC 32kHz? I tried over 10 times last night to capture the footage, but it kept giving me the "loacting timebreak" error.

  • Want to refresh Image Capture without disconnecting device

I'm using Image Capture to import iPad Screen captures to my iMac.  The problem is that it "sees" only those images that were on the iPad when Image Capture started up.
In order to see subsequent images, I have to physically disconnect ("pull the plug") my iPad from my Mac.  After I reconnect, Image Capture mounts the iPad anew and the the new images are visible.
Quiting Image Capture and relaunching it does not have the same effect, so it is obviously some OS function that is mounting/unmounting the iPad device.
Is there any OSX command that will do what I want (I'm comfortable using Terminal).  I guess it would be something like mounting/ejecting a disk, but for a USB device instead.
I'd welcome info on any alternative ways of getting those new images over to my Mac for processing.
    Thanks for any help.
    Frank

I'm having the same problem with my iphone 4 and was sure that it was possible before updating to iOS 5. I've just checked this theory using my ipod touch which is still running iOS 4 and can confirm that it's something that used to be possible - new photos taken show up immediately in Image Capture as they are taken on the iPod. I'm wondering if this change has anything to do with iCloud.
Bit annoying so I'll be very interested to see if you come up with a work around...
