DNG from Lightroom 5 compatible to CS 6

I would like to move to LR 5 but I have a big client who's still on a CS6 / ACR workflow. I was in big trouble when I moved from CS5 to CS6 because in his CS5 version my DNGs from CS6 / LR4 looked totally different. So my question: is a DNG from LR5 the same in LR4? thanks..

It isn't necessary to run both versions as LR5 supports the same process versions as LR4 and CS6, CS6 is now ACR 8.7 (Lightroom 5.7 as well) so there should be no issue with compatibility between LR5/CS6
I personally run LR5/CS6 and haven't had any issues with DNG's, even those created in LR 3.
Sorry ... forgot to mention that the problem may have arisen because the final version of ACR in CS5 was 6.7

This is probably due to the difference in scaling algorithms in Lightroom and Photoshop when you are zoomed out. To display an image on your screen at zoomed out zoom levels, the program has to scale down your image. The algorithm used can strongly alter the appearance of detail. Photoshop does different things depending on zoom level. If it is a zoom factor of 2 or multiples of that (25%, 50%, etc.) it uses a different algorithm than at non even zooms (i.e. 33%, 66%). In Lightroom, at least in Library, it uses a system dependent algorithm but uses it always (except at 1:1 and higher zooms). In develop, it does something different altogether. Bottom line is that in neither program you can judge actual sharpness/detail if you are not at 1:1 (100% in PS) or higher zoom. At fit views, the algorithm used to scale down has a strong influence on the appearance of sharpness.

  • Is the catalog from Lightroom 5 compatible with Lightroom 6? Also, can Lightroom CC 2015 and Lightroom 6 use the same catalog?

I am a current Lightroom 5.7 user - I have purchased and installed Lightroom 6, but have not launched the program yet - will LR 6 make changes to my LR 5 catalog, such that it cannot be used in LR5?
Also, can LR6 and LR CC 2015 share the same catalog?

Lightroom 6 will require an updated database are catalog format. When you first start Lightroom 6 after you have installed it, it will prompt you to upgrade your catalog. This will create a new copy of your catalog in the new format, leaving your Lightroom 5 catalog intact and usable if you still have Lightroom 5 installed. Lightroom 6 and Lightroom CC can use the same catalog. But they cannot share the same catalog because that catalog must be installed locally on both computers. The Lightroom catalog cannot be placed on a network drive.

  • Unsupported Image Format for DNG from GF1?

I am in the process of trying to switch from Lightroom 3 to Aperture 3 (in case you are wondering why the main reason is increasing integration between iOS and Aperture).
Most of the images in my Lightroom catalog are from Nikon DSLRs which when I import as DNGs from Lightroom into Aperture show up just fine. However, all of the old DNGs I try to import from Lightroom as DNGs that were shot with my Panasonic GF1 don't render in Aperture and just show up as "Unsupported Image Format."
Please note that new GF1 images I import from the SD card of my GF1 import just fine. The problem seems limited to GF1 images saved in Lightroom as DNGs that I am importing into Aperture.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to correct this issue?
    Thank you.

Solved it. Had nothing to do with Photoshop PS4 install, it had to do with moving my home space to a larger external drive. One of the "import" setting changed (I don't remember changing it) such that the images weren't getting imported into Aperture. (Re-?)checked that, and all is well. Will go for the PS4-reinstall tomorrow.

  • DNG Profile Editor won't open DNG from Panasonic LX3

I need help.  I've just added a new camera (Panasonic DMC LX3) and I want to create custom camera profiles for use in Lightroom.  I have done this with all my cameras before with no problems.  The raw files open fine in Lightroom (2.6) and CS-4 Camera Raw (5.6.0.148).  First I exported to DNG from Lightroom then tried to open the file in DNG Profile Editor.  I received the following error message:
"DNG Profile Editor could not open the selected image.  Note that the selected image must be a valid DNG colr image".  I tried the usual closing and re-launching the application, restarting the computer, etc. all to no avail.  I then downloaded the latest stand alone DNG converter (5.6) and performed a fresh conversion with that.  Still no luck.  The DNG's all open fine in Lightroom and CS-4.  Any suggestions?  These profiles have become an important part of my workflow.

    Lightroom 2.6 (64 bit)

DNG Profile Editor 1.0.0.39 Beta 2

Yes, I used the stand alone converter as well as lightroom.  I did find a solution on another post.  I changed the dng compatibility in the drop down menu to "Camera Raw 4.6 and later" (it was set to " Camera Raw 5.4 and later") and it worked fine.  This worked with both the stand alone DNG converter and exporting as DNG from Lightroom.  It seems that the DNG profile editor hasn't been updated since the 2008 beta so It doesn't recognize the newer spec DNG.  Thank you for your assistance, I was starting to panic...

  • Is Lightroom 5 upgrade version (from Lightroom 3) ?

Is Lightroom 5 upgrade version (from Lightroom 3) compatible with OS X.8.4 or do I have to buy the full Lightroom 5?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you already have Lightroom 3, you should be able to use the upgrade version because it's compatible with 10.8.4

  • Difference between Adobe DNG Converter & Lightroom DNG Converter?

I've converted NEFs to DNGS using both Adobe DNG Converter and Lightroom DNG Converter.
I found that the converted DNGS from Lightroom have a different icon in the finder that those convereted from Adobe DNG Converter. The icon in the finder from Lightroom looks like a file icon, and that from tthe Adobe DNG Converter looks more like a JPEG icon.
Otherwise they seem to be identical.
    Thanks for any input.

It's not at all unusual for DNGs to be smaller file sizes if you did the DNG conversion using lossless compression, did you? Fuji raw files are known for being oversized due to the way they write their image data. Also, totally ignore any findings you may regarding JPEGs, those are lossy compressed and don't figure into the equation...

  • Hi,  I've just purchased and installed an upgrade from Lightroom 4 to 5.  It doesn't seem to handle raw files authored with a new Nikon D750 camera.  I spoke to the sales rep about this and he gave me a link to the 8.6 DNG converter page with instructions

Hi,  I've just purchased and installed an upgrade from Lightroom 4 to 5.  It doesn't seem to handle raw files authored with a new Nikon D750 camera.  I spoke to the sales rep about this and he gave me a link to the 8.6 DNG converter page with instructions to download.  8.6 only works with Mac OS 10.7-10.9, according to the page.  I'm running Yosemite, Mac 10.10.  Please can you tell me my options?  Lightroom 4 worked beautifully with my older cameras' raw files so I would like to continue using the application.  What should I do?  How soon will Lightroom 5 be able to deal with raw files from a D750.  Many thanks, Adam.

Until the next version of Lightroom is released, you need to use the DNG Converter version 8.7RC to convert your RAW photos to DNG and then import the DNGs into Lightroom.

  • Migrate from Lightroom 3 to Aperture 3 - Problems with DNG

    Hello : )
I will migrate from Lightroom 3 to Aperture 3. I've tested Aperture for a while and I like it, but I have one problem. If I import DNG files, I lost all the settings I've made in Lightroom, except Metadata. Is there any way to import DNG files and get all the settings? If not I think a migration to Aperture will not be possible to me, because I've over 50.000 DNG files and I don't want to convert them to tiff or other formats and lost all the benefits of the RAW files.
    Thanks

  • Save as DNG in Photoshop when editing from Lightroom

When transfering from Lightroom 2 to Photoshop CS3 (Windows) and after editing as a smart object in Photoshop how do I save the file back into Lightroom as a DNG file

You cannot save DNG files from photoshop. This is because DNG lacks the support for the features you need.

  • Lightroom 5.7 will not convert .nef to dng from my Nikon d750. Stand alone dng converter will not recognize or convert the files.

Lightroom 5.7 will not convert .nef to dng from my Nikon d750. Stand alone dng converter will not recognize or convert the files. Any know whats wrong?

I don't understand why you feel you need to use ViewNX to download your images from the camera. Lightroom has an excellent import process. I don't see that you gain anything by using the Nikon software. It seems to me that it has the capability of just creating more problems.
If you want to convert your D750 files to DNG using the standalone DNG converter thing you need to have DNG converter 8.7 installed. Once you have it installed, just choose the FOLDER in the DNG converter, but don't open it in the DNG converter file browser. If you open that folder then you will get the message that there are no files to convert. The converter works on the folder level, not the individual file level.

  • I exported jpg, tif, psd, and dng files from Lightroom but Aperture does not see them except for dng during import

How do I import jpg, tif, psd files exported from Lightroom 3 into Aperture 3.2?  I had no problems before...seems like since I installed Lion, they do not show up in the import folder.

How are you trying to import them (again) ?  If you're importing through the Import Window and have RAW only set then that's all you'll get.
Also what's an Import Folder? Not sure how Lightroom fits into this. If you share your workflow with us we might be able to help.

  • After using DNG converter, Lightroom still won't recognize and import my photos...

I just started shooting with a Sony A6000 and couldn't import the photos due to compatibility issues with my current version of lightroom (4.4).  After reading about it on the forums I found that I had to either download LR5 or use the DNG converter then import into LR.  I opted for the free problem fix and downloaded DNG Converter v8.4 (compatible with Sony A6000).  Now, after converting my freshly shot photos to DNGs, I've tried to import them into Lightroom through both the Copy and Move functions (because I like the file organization I've established through LR) but each time I end up with a dialogue box saying "Could not move a file to the requested location."  When in the import window, LR shows previews of the images clearly. When converting to DNGs, I've ensured the photos are compatible with Camera RAW v7.1 and later (my LR has v7.4) and I've tried both embedding Fast Load Data and not... Also, I'm using a MacBook Pro OS X 10.9 if that makes any difference.  Am I missing something? I don't see what the problem is... All I want to do is organize and edit my new photos from my new camera on LR without having to pay an additional $80 for the new LR just because I have a new camera...

This could be a permissions issue, especially if you are using a Mac computer. Make sure you have write permission for the folder you are trying to import into.

  • I've send from Lightroom 5 photos in Jpeg format to my desktop that arrive as Archive and I'm unable to do anything with the photos.  I want to put them in a folder but can't. It seems problem is in them being in 'archive'.  Any suggestions?

I've exported photos from Lightroom 5 from my laptop to my wife's desktop.  The photos arrive as Archive and she's unable to do anything with them, such as catalog them in an IPhoto folder with other photos.  Is there an adjustment I need to make when exporting from Lightroom 5 so we can avoid this problem? Thank you.
