DNG+JPEG?

My camera, a Panasonic L1, always shoots RAW+JPEG when in RAW mode (no way to turn off JPEG). It turns out there is EXIF info in the JPEG not in the RAW, such as lens info, so I need both in Aperture for full metadata.
I'd like to be able to convert my RAWs to DNG before importing since L1 RAWs are uncompressed. I typically see a 14MB RAW file become a 6MB DNG. But when I try to import the DNGs with the JPEGs in the same folder, Aperture won't show the JPEG in the import dialog, but also does not import the JPEG master. I'm unable to create a new master from JPEG, and I've confirmed by looking inside the Aperture library that the JPEG isn't there.
Is this something Aperture won't do, or is it based on something besides file name, like maybe the date of the file? When I create the DNG the date/time is that of conversion, which doesn't match the JPEG date/time. Maybe Aperture keys off some EXIF date/time value that Adobe's DNG Converter is missing?

I am unfamiliar with the L1, but Aperture does a better job of RAW conversion on Nikon RAW files than does Adobe's ACR. Personally I would avoid Adobe's DNG format (and the attendant ACR conversion) unless forced into it because of a camera that Aperture does not support.

I know when importing there is an option to treat as seperate files. What about after importing?

For each window where you want to see the icon previews open the window, type Command-J (View menu > "Show View Options") and tick the appropriate box. (One reason for having this as an option is because there will be a noticeable time penalty where you have a lot of such files).

The CR2 is good in the Viewer on the PC to Win 8.1.
When I use Contenta software converter to JPEG then is result good.

  • APERTURE2+PHOTOSHOPCS3- DNG+JPEG - BEST WORKFLOW (+IPHOTO09 ??)

Sorry for my English (I'm Italian)
I shoot Raw+Jpeg (DNG). Keep Photos on External Drive. I like to import to Aperture directly from the External Drive. LATER I use PS to Edit Jpeg (if it is acceptable) or DNG if it is necessary to use the kind of adjustment you only get from RAW. Than I saw the image as Jpeg REPLACEING the original Jpeg made in the Camera (Pentax K10 and K20) keeping the same file name of course of previous Jpeg and RAW. I like to use Aperture to arrange pictures and to publish on Gallery or with iWeb.
This sometimes creates some confusion: it happens that later Aperture finds more that one singe Jpeg, with same file name and (1) or (2) and so on.
Which would be the best workflow ? I would like to keep the DNG unchanged on the external drive and several Jpeg if I wish more editions.
Amd which could be the best way to separate DNG from Jpeg into Aperture ? Is it really the best solution to see them "toghether" in Aperture ??
I am also wondering if I could install iPhoto 09 and use it to organize the facies... but later ?
    What will happen with Aperture.
I know I use this software not in the best way but....
Give me a simple suggestion and I will try to follow. At the moment I am thinking to keep completely separate the DNG from Jpeg to be sure not to mix them.
Thanks for your patience and time.

  • How to unlink dng+jpeg

How can i unlink my dmg files from the jpg? I have "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" selected, but they do not separate.
    Any Ideas?
    LR v5.7

Right-click (Cmd-click Mac) on the folder in the library and choose to synchronize the folder. I think that will import the JPEG images. You will only see the JPEG images in the previous import. You'll have to go back to the folder in order to see both the DNG and the JPEG.

  • Linking dng files with jpegs

    Hello all
Back in my Powerbook G4 days I had a habit of shooting cr2 with my Canon 5D but converting the cr2 file to DNGs and importing the latter into Aperture 1./2. But they were very slow to load so in the end I abandoned a raw workflow but still choose to keep the raw files. I shot jpeg+cr2, converted the cr2 files to dng, deleted the cr2s and imported the jpegs to Aperture. The DNGs were just kept on my external but never imported into Aperture.
Fastforward to 2012 and I have a highend RMBP and thought it would be fun to reimport those old dngs and wondered if these could be matched with the jpegs and treated as one file (with options to work with RAW or JPEG). Is there a way to do this? I thought I read somewhere that in Ap 3 you can break up and re-pair raw+jpegs. Just not sure if I can do that with dng+jpeg when the original combination was cr2+jpeg. The exif data will be the same but the DNG file created/modified/opened dates in Finder are all based on when they were converted.
I experimented with importing two of them into the same project as the original jpegs. When I sort by date they do not show up but when I sort by file you can see them beside the jpegs. Sorted by date I can only click on the jpeg file and right clicking does not give options of new version from master/jpeg so it is not linking them.
Any thoughts on how to do this or how best to fudge it?
    Thanks
    Ross

It depends on how you define a raw format. As far as the Camera Raw adjustment controls are concerned, you cannot tell the difference between a linear dng and "raw data" dng, since all the current Camera Raw adjustment controls happen after demosaic step.
(Both Canon and Kodak have cameras that produce demosaiced "raw" file formats in some cases. In Canon's case, the new "sRAW" format is already demosaiced. Some Kodak cameras (e.g. Kodak 14n, etc.) also saved a "lower resolution" raw format that was also demosaiced.)
The dividing line between a "raw" format and a "rendered" format is with whether the data stored in the file is scene referred or output referred. As long as the data is in a scene referred color space, it is easy to change the white balance, exposure, tone curve, etc. Once the data is converted to an output referred color space, it gets much harder to change those parameters without causing artifacts.
That said, it is better to keep the image in mosaic format if possible, since this allows you to take advantage of better demosaic algorithms in the future. For this user, that is not possible because Camera Raw 2.4 does not have a demosaic algorithms that works for the Fuji S5, so using the linear form of dng solves that problem.

  • How do I get to a JPEG?

Hi, I shot some photos with the camera set to save RAW & JPEG and imported them into LR, converting the RAW to DNG as it came in. The shots are just for mucking about with LR. The Library shows one photo. If I set the Library view to show photo (file) suffix it shows dng + jpeg so I think it knows there are two photos. How do I get to see both, side by side? LR seems to know that the JPEG is there but is studiously ignoring it.
    Thanks,
    John

In the light room preferences there is an option to create JPEG files next to raw images as separate files. There needs to be a checkmark in that option. Then you will have to synchronize the folder in order to see both files.  After selecting that option, subsequent imports will show all images.

  • DNG Converter

    Hi,
Does the Adobe DNG converter convert back to a TIFF format ?
Essentially I am looking for an Adobe product that can batch convert DNG files with edits into the correct TIFF.
    Many thanks.

So here's my dilemma and what we've tried:
We need to be able to convert a DNG to a TIFF, using the Image Settings (not Camera Raw Defaults, which seems to be what most batch converters we've tried do).
We can do it when converting to DNGs JPEGs, using the Adobe DNG converter. However (and correct me if I'm wrong), subsequently converting the JPEG to TIFF will be lossy.
We created a droplet, which simply opens the file in Photoshop, then saves it as a TIFF. This works in the command-line.
However, we want to be able to call the droplet from a .BAT file, which is shelled-out to from an Oracle database. This works for CS2 running on Windows XP. However, it fails for CS5 running on Windows Server 2008. The Application Event Log (in part) says: "faulting module Photoshop.exe, version 11.0.0.0, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00972fa7, process id 0xdc".
    1. Does anybody know of a solution to getting the droplet to work in the above fashion?
    2. Is there programmatic way to achieve what we want? Assuming we have all required DLLs, etc, can we just write a program (any language) to leverage existing modules to get our conversion done?

  • Are edits in DNG files considered metadata

I just experienced an unusual occurrance. I am using lightroom 5.2 on windows 7. I have been using lightroom since the original beta.
I just finished hours of editing DNG files. I selected all the thumbnails and dragged them to a collection. I noticed that after dragging them down that all the thumbnails showed the icon that there was a conflict in metadata. I selected all the thumbnails and reset the metadata. I lost all my edits.
Unfortunately, I had not yet saved a new catelog.
Is there any way to recover my edits?
    Jim :-(

    James Palik wrote:
I exited LR without backing up thinking that I wanted to restore my catelog from yesterday without realizing that there was a history file.
All that history info is stored in the catalog, it's not a separate file.
    James Palik wrote:
Needless to say, I just finished redoing my edits. Nothing lost but about four hours - so not that bad.
Who among us hasn't experienced that, at least once? But saving xmp between catalog backups can be your saving grace - regardless of file format.
    James Palik wrote:
It was my understanding that one of the advantages of converting to DNG is that you no longer needed to depend on the XMP sidecar.
No, no, no, ... - xmp may be embedded or it may be in a separate sidecar file, but you need to save it if you want it saved. I prefer to control that, i.e. I only save (manually) when I have an "edit milestone", the other option is to enable auto-save in catalog settings (Lr preferences), but then it saves your negative mistakes as well as your posititive milestones...
    James Palik wrote:
I knew that the data was written into the DNG
To be clear, it's written into whatever file you've edited (DNG, jpeg, raw, ... ) when metadata is saved, and not if metadata is not saved.. The only difference in raw and the other file types is whether it's embedded or contained in a separate "sidecar" file.
    James Palik wrote:
Is it my understanding that the when the catelog is backed up that it also has a backup of the meta data that I inadvertantly deleted.
No, really: not. Your catalog backup is just the active catalog, backed up - nothing extra...
    James Palik wrote:
I really need to understand the catelog and its contents better.
One way: Get an app like SQLSpy and open the catalog and inspect each table. Much will look like gobble-de-guk, but much of the data is recognizable as what you see in Lr UI. I realize this may not be appropriate for all persons, still... (I'm not aware of any "what exactly is in the catalog" document for non-techy types - maybe somebody else will have a good reference..).
Likewise, you can load xmp sidecar files into a text editor to see exactly what is there, and what is not, if you want to.

  • CRW file won't convert to DNG

I added a CRW file shot in 2010 to the catalog, but the convert to DNG command is grayed out.  Why is LR refusing to convert?  Is there some other way to get it to convert?  Must i first export is as a tiff and then add that to the catalog and convert that to a DNG?

I agree. I don't experience enough file size savings to be concerned. Also remember that any adjustments you make in Lightroom to any image regardless of whether it's the original raw file, the DNG, JPEG, or whatever, the underlying master image remains untouched. There's no need to create DNG just to preserve the integrity of the raw file. I think if you want to do different renderings of the same image you would do just as well to simply create a virtual copy of the original raw file and work on it. But that is your choice.
Those who are in favor of the DNG format argue that it is an open format that will always be supported (at least by Adobe). There is some integrity checking that can be done. And, of course there is the reduced file size. There are other arguments as well, but I haven't really paid a lot of attention to them. Those who are strongly in favor of converting to DNG may suggest that I'm foolish. That may be true. But I'm content working with my original raw files.

  • Lightroom:  Converting entire library to DNG

I'm intersted in converting my entire library to DNG in Lightroom 5 without losing any quality and
    maintaining the most flexibility possible.
Currently I have all of my folders organized chronologically.
Unfortunatley, over time I have switched back and forth between xmp and catalog based metadata which
has left some folders with xmp and others without.
I want everything to be consistent and ultimatley more efficient for Lightrooms performance.
What is the cleanest, safest and most comprehensive steps to accomplish this?
What boxes should I check in the "covert to dng" dialog box?
Lossy will reduce the file size but compromise quality, correct?
Any other tips for things that come up along the way would be greatly appreciated.
    All the best,
    Alex

    Alexander Herring wrote:

Most of the size reduction comes from reduced jpeg preview, raw data compression is about the same. Save fast-load data, xmp, and a full-size/high quality jpeg in there and it will be bigger than the original raw. Don't take my word for it - do the test!

Whether sidecars are a net plus or minus is a subject of constant debate in this forum. I keep all my raws in proprietary format, but frequently give other people DNGs, in order to assure the sidecar isn't dropped. But I wish sidecars were an option for all file types including DNG & jpeg...
    Alexander Herring wrote:

Remember: you can convert to DNG at any time, but you can't convert back. Well, actually, you can revert with a little help from UnDNG.

Lots of people convert to DNG and are proud of it - the only practical problem you may run into is if using non Adobe-converted-DNG compatible software. I mean, if you try 100,000 at once you may not make it through, since Lr often has memory leaks which can gang up, etc. but you can always restart.

In my opinion, the warm fuzzy feeling you get converting to DNG is the only good reason to do it (or the main reason anyway).

Above the NEF >> DNG >> jpeg file. I made some enhancements, sharpening etc. Check the red lights and rolling text! It is only a little better without any sharpening.

Next one is the same file except in-camera conversion to jpeg (preset standard). No extra enhancements.
So I had the setting to make RAW + JPG (fine) simultanously in camera.
I think the jpeg looks better than the one from the NEF original. Don't tell me I made the wrong settings in Lightroom, because I've made many RAW conversions from NEFs out of my D200 and they were much better than the standard jpgs.
