DNG VS ACR updated

my nikon D300s NEF file won't open in ACR, will i ned to to donwload both DNG and ACR 5.6 to open the files, or will just updating the ACR work?

The D300 is supported by ACR 4.6; you don't have to go with version 5. Maybe you need to install a newer version of ACR 4 (the current one is 4.6.xxx).

  • ACR update help

Hello. I'm running PS 5.1. I recently got the Nikon D 810 and I need a ACR update. 8.6 I think. I've downloaded and in stalled the 8.6 DNG converter. But I'm confused about what to do next. Ps will not just let me open the files. It seems like I need to convert files before they can open. Help me please!

Please bear with me.  This will be clear when you read the last paragraph of this post.
That camera is a pretty darned good one. If you can afford it, you can certainly afford the $199 to upgrade to Photoshop CS6.
    Here's why you should:
If you stick with CS5 and ACR 6.7, regardless of having converted your raw NEFs to raw DNGs with the DNG Converter, you will be leaving a lot of image quality on the table compared to the quality you'd be getting with  Photoshop CS6 and the current version of the ACR plug-in.
There was a significant increase in the rendering quality of ACR 7.4 (and higher, of course).  The DNF Converter can't do a thing about that.

  • Next ACR update?

Does anyone in the know have info on the ETA of the next Camera Raw update... which will hopefully fully support the new Canon 7D?

No, Jim, I am not expecting an update to ACR 4.6.  I am quite aware that support for CS3 ended when CS4 was released.  That, along with the fact that I just upgraded to a Canon 7D a few days ago is the reason that I am using DNG Converter to convert the CR2 files for use with my current software.  However, as you are apparently not aware, just like ACR, DNG converter is also periodically updated to add new camera profiles just as ACR is updated.  The latest updates to both were made on September 15.  You can go to the following pages to see the list of cameras that were added for both ACR and DNG Converter: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4576 and http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4578.  Of course, the ACR update is for CS4 only.  The latest release of DNG Converter has a Beta profile only for the Canon 7D.  The nice thing about DNG Converter is that it is backwards compatible for earlier versions of ACR/Photoshop which makes it possible to upgrade camera bodies without the necessity of upgrading the a newer version of Photoshop.
I probably did not make it clear enough that I plan to use DNG converter until I decide to upgrade to CS4 or whatever is current if i wait long enough.  It is an extra time-consuming step, but not too bad.  Perhaps, you have confused me with the OP who is looking for an update to ACR.

  • ACR Update 6.5 fails to install

I have been trying to install ACR Update 6.5 on my MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 and CS5.  I have tried running the updater from Photoshop and downloading the update and installing it and I get the same error every time.
    Photoshop Camer Raw 6.5 Update
There was an error installing this update.  Please quit and try again later.
The 3.5 upate for Lightroom installed without an issue.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

Go to the Camera Raw product page and download and install the update manually...Adobe Updater doesn't always do the right thing with regards to Camera Raw.

  • No ACR Update for Photoshop Elements 13.1 ?

    Hello all,
that latest ACR update for Photoshop Elements 13 seems to be 8.7.1 released in December.
In the meantime ACR 8.8 and ACR 9.0 have been released, but obviously not for Photoshop Elements.
Does anybody have an idea whether there will be further ACR updates for PSE or not ?
    Best regards
    Stephan Nicolay

12 hours later, I tried a Help / Updates in PSE13.1 Editor and I am getting ACR 9 so it just took a few more hours for Adobe to get the update ready, at least in the US.

  • Have ACR updates been stopped for Photoshop Elements 13?

It seems that ACR for Photoshop Elements has stopped at 8.7.  ACR and DNG Converter 8.8 came out a few weeks ago.  ACR  and DNG Converter 9.0 came out this morning with Lightroom 6.  Are buyers of newly released cameras out of luck until PE 14?

Thank you!  When I asked the question, it was not yet available.  This morning, after your post, I tried it from Photoshop Elements editor and it updated both PE and Premier Elements successfully.

  • ACR update for Pentax K20d

When is ACR version to handle Pentax K20d and other new cameras expected?
DNG runs but does not work correctly (presets wrong??) and PEF doesn't work at all.
    Thanks,
    RON C

It is interesting the cameras support added in 4.4 mentions the K20D, but
nothing at all is said for the Lightroom update. Makes me wonder what Adobe
is doing or if their web site update team is just sloppy. Given the horrible
nature of their web site over the last few years, my money is on a sloppy
    web site update team.

  • Can't install ACR updates in Windows 7

When I try to install downloaded updates, I get a message that the installer "... has encountered a problem. Close Adobe Bridge before continuing installation." Except that Bridge is not running, and I have no clue about why it thinks it is. Other updates have the same problem (Adobe Reader) but some have installed. Does anyone know what's happening here?
There are other issues, such as the straighten tool in ACR will not draw a line and will crash Photoshop.
    Windows 7 HomePremium 64-bit and Photoshop CS4 64-bit.

    Hi,
Could you post the contents of your AIR installer log?  It's possible, depending on the error we received, we might also need the MSI log.
    Thanks,

  • Can't Get ACR Updates for PS CS6

My computer is a PC with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with 8GB of memory.  My problem is I don't seem to be able to get any of the Adobe Camera Raw updates for Photoshop CS6 (perpetual license).  It's stuck at ACR 8.1.  I also can't get the last update to the PS CS6 application (13.0.1.3).  As you can see from the screen capture of Adobe Creative Cloud desktop application, it says I have Photoshop CC and Photoshop CS6 and says all applications are up to date.  This is not the case as I have stated above.  ACR should be at 8.4 and it's at 8.1.
If I open PS CS6 and go to Help > Updates... I get the message that all applications are up to date.
If I click on Preferences, it says "Only show updates for the following products" and there are no options to show updates for any CS6 products.  Again, this display came from the Help menu in PS CS6.  Why doesn't it show an option to check for updates to CS6?  My PS CS6 application was a perpetual license purchase and wasn't converted to a Creative Cloud application.
I have been following several threads at this forum and the Photoshop forum that discuss problems similar to mine but have not found a solution.  I followed a link in one of the responses to a download for ACR 8.4 for PS CS6 on Windows and thought I could do a manual installation.  Instead, I got the following message that the update failed because "This patch is not applicable to you."  I got the same message when I tried to manually install the Photoshop CS6 update to 13.0.1.3.
I would like to keep my PS CS6 (perpetual license) up to date, but I don't know what to do now and am hopeful someone in this community can help me with this issue.
    Thanks,
    Chas

Thank you very much, ssprengel, for this very helpful information.  It never occurred to me that the camera and lens information was stored in a common location shared by both CC and CS6.  Also, thanks again to Michelle for her useful reply as I did not know that the same ACR file could be used for both PS CC and PS CS6.
Although, I still don't know why my PS CS6 won't update properly or why the manual installers refused to run, you two have provided a satisfactory work around to keep ACR for CS6 up to date.
I'm sorry I can only mark one answer as correct and both you and Michelle's answers were very helpful.  I marked Michelle's reply as correct because it let me know that I could copy the CC ACR file into the correct CS6 folder.
    Thanks,
    Chuck

  • Why does DNG 8.5 update have to be opened separately to convert my DMC GH4 files to camera raw?

I just recently purchased a new iMac and installed CS6 again. When I went to the update page to reload DNG 8.5 it went into Applications when downloaded and it appear I have to open it and select the files, etc. On my old iMac with the same CS6 after I downloaded the DNG update, when I opened Bridge and photo uploader opened it did the conversion immediately. Why has this changed or have I done something wrong with the new download?

Are you wanting to convert to dng because the Panasonic GH4 files won't open in photoshop cs6 without converting them to dng first?
Photoshop cs6/Bridge cs6 should be able to be updated to camera raw 8.6, provided your mac os x is newer than snow leopard 10.6.8
    (Help>Updates from within photoshop cs6)
Not having a updated camera raw plugin could be the cause of why the photo downloader doesn't work as on your older mac.

  • ACR update for Canon 550D with PSE 7

Which version of ACR will recognize my 550D with PSE 7? Or must I buy PSE 8.

    Thanks,
The workaround works although the dng files after conversion are smaller as the original cr2 files. Is information lost?
ACR 5.6 is not recognizing the cr2 files from my 550D and ACR 5.7 can't work in PSE 7.
So if one insists working with the original cr2 files (as you should) PSE 7 costumers has to buy PSE 8.
The usual marketing policy. A shame.

  • ACR update fails-"product not found"

I have PSE 6/mac & LR.  I get an Adobe Updater notification of ACR 4.6 but when clicked to install, it comes back with error message essentially saying 'the product to be updated can't be found'.  It also says something about this being an update for CS3 which I don't have but perhaps is what is 'under the hood' of PSE6 (?).
I just want to do the update or get it to stop asking to upgrade every day or two if, in fact, I don't have this as part of PSE 6.
    Thanks.

PSE can never auto update ACR. Go here:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=40&platform=Macintosh
download the 5.5 update and manually install it, following the directions EXACTLY. Be sure to remove the old plug-in first.
Also, PSE 6 is based on CS3, which is why you see that wording in the message.

  • Old Cameras and Future ACR updates

Quick question: with a future update of ACR, would one expect it to improve the rendering of RAW files from an "old" camera or would it only be likely to improve renderings for new cameras going forward?
Generally, I guess I'm wondering if when ACR rendering is improved, is it relying upon new profiles from old cameras (seems to be unlikely level of effort required) or upon improved ability to understand the manufacture's RAW files, which would affect the full line of that manufacturers cameras?
Specifically, I have a 3-4 yo Canon Rebel XT. I'm wondering if future versions/improvements to ACR would improve the ability to read RAW files from this camera.
    Thanks,
    Frank

There is two parts to understanding RAW. One is the demosaic algorithm. Almost every current camera uses a Bayer mosaic sensor with a simple antialias filter in front. When ACR's algorithm for demoisaicing improves, it improves for ALL cameras, not just the new ones. You'll gte more detail and lower noise automatically. Second part is the mapping of the camera signals to certain colors. To do this the ACR/Lightroom folks shoot testcharts with all these different cameras and generate profiles from these shots. New profiles are added all the time and in 1.4 (ACR 4.4), a lot of new profiles for old cameras were introduced. Even for cameras that are not sold anymore. At some point for sure, they must stop profiling older cameras. You'll still benefit from improvements in the demosiac though.

  • ACR update for G15?

I just bought a new Canon G15 as a travel camera. The camera takes raw images and while the Canon software does display them, it does not allow editing them. I can only hope and assume that Adobe will include that model in the next update to ACR, but does anyone have any idea when that might happen?

    Ken,
That is strange that DPP can't be used to edit the RAW images. The release notice for version 3.12.40 specifically says that support for the Powershot G15 is included.
Are you using a MAC or Windows system?
If you select a G15 CR2 image, does the edit icon (top left) not become active? Or are you getting some error message?
