DNGs disappear from catalog

This has happened to me with 2 separate shoots - raw files imported, changed to dng.  Some files edited in LR, some not.  Some sent to PSE and brought back into LR, not all.  Everything is turned to jpegs, even in library catalog.  This has never happened in a year of using LR, now 2x.  All raw info and edits are gone, photos are resized for web printing as exported from LR and I cannot get anything back.  I could maybe guess that somewhere they were synched, but why are dngs gone in library too?  Any thoughts on how to get them back?  (I should say that they were shot as both raw + jpeg, only raws selected to be brought into LR from hard drive, and the dngs were definitely there as some were edited.)  And yes, in preferences, raw to be separate.  Thanks for any help.

Hmmm, I am not sure why my 2 replies above are not showing - sorry, I sent replies from phone and am only checking site now.
@ssprengel, thank you for your reply.  I did answer but it's not posted.  The jpegs are in the catalog but not the dngs.  Only a few of the dngs were edited and exported as jpegs, but all were changed to jpegs.  All dngs and edits are gone.
@Rob Cole - thanks also for your reply.  I am sure it must be my error, but I don't know how to undo it.  I looked in the library at these 2 shoots again tonight, and though I didn't think I stacked them, wanted to make sure.  Here's the message I see in the first shoot - "The metadata for this photo has been changed by another application.  Should LR import settings from disk or overwrite disk settings with those from catalog?"  I have no idea what that would overwrite.  There are 2 choices - Import settings from disk, or Overwrite settings, which is the highlighted prompt.  In the second shoot, they all have that same message, except for 1, which starts off "The metadate for this photo has been changed by both LR and another application."  Some of these photos were brought into PSE, but most were not.
It sounds possible that if I overwrite disk settings with those from catalog, it may revert to the dngs?  And I still don't know how I messed up to begin with.  Any further thoughts?  Thanks for any help.

  • ReImport Failure after Photos Disappear from Catalog in 2.1

Mac OS (Tiger). Lightroom 2.1. Several photos disappeared from my catalog. They are visible in Bridge. I tried to do an import from disk to get them back by selecting the missing picture in the import dialog and then clicking import. After clicking import I get a message that the file won't be imported because it is already in the catalog (even though it is not visible). If I then select the name of the file in the "will not be imported list" and click on the "show in library" button I am taken to a picture other than the one I selected for import.
I have been able to re-import the images by renaming them outside Lightrom, and doing an import from disk. Once the images are inside lightroom I can rename them to their original name. At that point I get a message saying that the file can't be renamed, and Lightroom then proceeds to rename the file to its original name.
This is making me very nervous about the integrity of the catalog in 2.1. I don't know if this is a 2.1 problem or a 2.0 problem because I noticed the missing images weeks after I upgraded from 2.0 to 2.1.
So far I have noticed only two images that can't be seen in the library module and can't be reimported (unless they are renamed outside Lightroom).
    Any suggestions?

I have disabled Library filters and the problem persists. Also, I have seen the same problem on two different computers under both Tiger and Leopard, Apparently, the disappearing images only disappear AFTER an editt and same in Photoshop.

  • Import from Catalog- Why is metadata changing?

Whenever I run Import from Catalog (going from portable drive to desktop), the dialog box shows several photos that have been "modified," even though I haven't touched them since they were last imported to the desktop.  I'm guessing, the desktop install of LR is finding metadata changes in some files. In fact, some thumbnails even show the "metadata changed" badges even though I haven't touched them.
I'm using LR 3 Macintosh, and want to share catalogs between my laptop and desktop using Import from Catalog.  I consider my desktop the "master catalog" and mainly use the laptop for capture or editing when I'm traveling.  The laptop catalog and photos are stored on a portable drive.
Here's what I did to try to isolate the problem - all of this was executed on my desktop machine so the LR settings should be identical:
    1) Created a new catalog on the portable drive while attached to desktop.
    2) Restart LR with new portable drive catalog active.
    3) "Import to catalog" and import 10,000 photos to portable drive from the desktop catalog. This ran with no problems as expected.
    4)  Restart LR w/ original desktop catalog.
    5)  Run "Import from Catalog" to import form the portable drive. -- NOTE I hadn't touched ANY photos on portable since step 3.
    6)  Import from catalog show 0 "new" photos but about 10 "changed" photos.  Why??  It shouldn't show any.
    7)  Cancel step 6 and run Import from catalog again.  This time it shows 0 new and 0 changed. (that's what I'd expect).
    8) Cancel step 7 and run Import from Catalog again.  This time it shows 0 new and about 30 changed - But they're a different set than in step 6.
    9) Give up and post this question.  What is changing the metadata?
As background, I'm running most current versions of OS X and LR 3.  My library contains mostly DNG files with some jpg and some TIF and PSD.  The "modified" files that are showing up all seem to be DNG files.  The files in the library were shot with  Canon, G2, G10, 10D, 20D, 60D and 7D.   The "modified" files appear to be from the 20D, 60D and 7D (all files shot in last 6 months).  The library has some virtual copies and stacks, but this doesn't appear associated with the "modified" files.
    Thank you in advance.

    Ian;
Thank you for your response.  I suspect you may be correct, although I can't trace the problem to explain lens profiles as the issue either at this point.  Each time I try to "Import from Catalog" back and forth between two catalogs - both made from the same instance of LR, it shows a different set of photos with who's metadata is changed.  I make absolutely NO changes to any photos.  I just choose "Import form catalog," look at the list of photos it says are changed, select, 'cancel," and then select "Import form catalog" again.  Each time it gives me a different set of, and total amount of changed photos.  First its 9 photos, then 32 photos, then 447 photos, etc.
This has "BUG" written all over it.  If it's actually a feature, I wish someone could show me how to control it.
A lot of people complain about LR's ability to share catalogs between computers and keep multiple catalogs in sync.  If I could master "Import from Catalog," I'd feel I'd have a workable solution for managing multiple computers (with one photographer / editor).
Just my opinion on this one feature. Overall, I LOVE working with LR.
    Thanks again,
    Marshall
PS.  Thank you, Ian for the many tips and tutorials you've provided over the past years.  I've learned a lot from them.

  • Removed an edited folder from Catalog - Bad move?

I have searched the forum for a specific answer, but I either overlooked it or failed to enter the exact search terms I needed....
I removed a folder of 173 edited DNG's from the Catalog. Don't ask why!
Am I correct in assuming that all of the presets/adjustments for those files are permanently gone? It appears that they are. - At least I had already exported all as full res JPGs!
Please correct me if I am wrong with this statement:
In order to preserve presets/adjustment applied to any image file in Lightroom, the files MUST remain in the Catalog. Yes or No?
This is an awesome program & there is much more I have to learn - sometimes the hard way.

You didn't say specifically... but did you try to re-import some of those images back into LR? Depending on your LR catalog settings, your edits may still be there. If you looked at the DNG in another viewer, then it's possible that you would not have seen your edits. Be sure to check them again with LR if you haven't done so already.
In the post above, johnbeardy states how you can manually save your LR edits into the DNG files, so all is not lost when images are removed from the LR catalog. Another method is in the LR catalog settings, as I mentioned above. Look under Edit>Catalog Settings>Metadata tab and see if the option "Automatically write changes into XMP" is checked. If it is, then again, your edit settings were likely saved to the DNG files, and your losses are minimized. Checking this option creates a performance hit for some folks, but it sure can save a lot of work.
I did re-import the DNG files. I was going to write - "from the original folder" - but now I may (too many senior moments) have moved the DNGs to another folder after exporting the edits as JPGs.. I did not use LR to move them - another bad move!? Anyway, after re-importing the DNGs, the original edits I performed were gone.
Thanks for the tip about the Catalogue settings - I have now checked that box. Does this mean that all editing info for each DNG will now be part of the file - no matter where I move it - or how it is moved (ie - via LR, Windows, or any other program)? I'll have do an experiment to check this myself.
Thanks to everyone for your help/suggestions. Especially to PhotoGAP for the tip on "Automatically write changes into XMP" in the Catalogue Settings.
After making your suggested change in Catalogue Settings, I imported one DNG from the folder, edited it, but did not export. I then removed that folder from the LR Catalogue. When I re-imported the DNG, all edit settings had been saved. I also copied & then renamed the DNG to another folder via Windows. When I imported the copied file, all edit settings were still there.
This is a relief! I will try to get accustomed to moving/creating new folders in LR, but it is good to know that valuable editing time will not be lost if I don't.
    Thanks much!

  • Can I save a dng file from Photoshop6 to import back into Lightroom 4

Can I save a dng file from Photoshop6 to import back into Lightroom 4. I don't understand why this is not straight forward.

    Hello!
The DNG format's goal is to be an universal file formats for camera raw files: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/extend.displayTab2.html?promoid=DTEHA
You can save a DNG from camera raw without a problem.
Just go the the bottom left hand corner of the interface, and select "save image".
(as explained here in the help files: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/creativesuite/cs/using/WS91C1E0BD-9600-42b2-8EBE-1E012ED61058. html#WSB0DC278F-B3DF-4a60-88BC-B3D6A852C242 )
Or are you trying to save an file edited in Photoshop as a DNG?
For what purpose, exactly? A TIFF, PSD or PSB file can have a raw file, saved as a Smart Object (to allow later reprocessing in Camera Raw) and all the pixel/vector editing layers intact.
If saved with maximize compatibility, it can be opened in Lightroom for cataloging, and editing, if needed.

  • How do I delete permanently fotos from catalogs?

When I use "x" to flag fotos in library mode and then "cmd del" and "remove fm disk" to get rid of fotos from a disk and a catalog, initially they do disappear.  Later after backing up the catalog the fotos reappear in the listings/grid mode of the catalog with "?" denoting unknown location.  How do I get the fotos to delete and then not reappear in the catalog.  We are talking thousands of images.

I have selected the option to query me each time I open and close LR3.  I
simply hit the tab that appears "Backup" or if time is short "skip this
    time"

I just backed up my 3gs iphone using itunes.  All my photos and contacts have disappeared from my phone.  I am unable to locate them on my computer.  HELP!!!

OK, I understand.  Try this ... it's much safer.  It will simply restore your backup, but not do anything to your iOS:
While your iPhone is plugged in to iTunes, right click on the iPhone icon on the left side of the iTunes display.
Choose "Restore from backup ..." from the pop-up menu that appears.
Again, what this will do is place that backup back on your iPhone without changing iOS.  So you should be very confident in the backup contents before doing this.

I have been using Firefox for almost a year now,and had upgraded to Version 7 recently.
My problem started with the downloads.
    1) When a download is to be commenced,a box appears with two options, namely "SAVE" and "CANCEL".
Even when I click on "SAVE",the the box shows it as 'cancelled'.When I right click on the box, another dialogue box appears with a number of choices ,the top one reads 'RETRY'.
When I click this option the download starts and it is shown in the chosen location until 99% is completed,bu the moment the download is complete, the item i.e. the downloaded item just disappears from the chosen location and is not traceable thereafter. This has happened to me repeatedly over the past week or so and I am so disgusted that I have been compelled to uninstall Firefox, and have started using Chrome.
Please help,as I would like to get back to using Firefox again but without the above problems.

Understood.  However, the point that I'm trying to make is that it's not the WiFi access point's security that's in question, it's having your phone's WiFi in an always-on mode that's in question.  It's simple: if your phone's WiFi is on, then it is both discoverable and hackable... even when it's not connected to a WiFi network or access point.  Here's an article about a drone in London that was created to hack smartphone WiFi signals (and hackers have been doing what this drone does for years):
    http://money.cnn.com/2014/03/20/technology/security/drone-phone/
The point is that it's not  secure to have your phone's WiFi in an always-on mode.  It would be better for privacy and security if Apple made WiFi location aware so that it is only enabled when you are at a trusted location (e.g. your home or office).  Or, at least give us the option of location aware WiFi so that each user can determine the best mode for their phone:
    (1) Always-On (current default - not secure and many privacy issues).
    (2) Trusted mode (only on at trusted locations).
    (3) Off.

  • Tunes disappear from folder - but still play in iTunes???

I can play songs in iTunes that have disappeared from the iTunes music folder. Maybe I'm fundamentally misunderstanding something, but this has me baffled.
Here's what's happened: I was looking at my iTunes music folder in Finder. I double-clicked on a song (an mp3 file); iTunes opened and played the song. But when I closed iTunes, the song was missing from the folder!
I opened iTunes, found the song in the library, and played it again. I did a 'Get Info' in iTunes and it still shows the song as being in my music folder.
I used spotlight to search for the song name, and it, too, shows the song as being in the iTunes music folder.
But it still doesn't show up when I open the folder in Finder.
Worried that something was going wrong with the file structure, I did a clean install of the OS (10.4.11) and upgraded to the latest iTunes (7.5).
Since then, I've replicated the process with two other songs.
    Any ideas?

All of the PDF documents on my iPad disappeared. This seems to be a problem that a number of people have experienced, although a clearly documented solution does not appear to be readily available.
This issue can be resolved by deleting all the PDF documents in the iTunes library. Copying the PDF documents back to the iTunes library and then syncing the iPad will allow the missing documents to reappear back in the collections into which they were filed.
It is a good idea to make sure that you have a complete backup of all of the PDF documents in the library before deleting them.
