DNS addresses in WiFi

iPhone accepts multiple DNS addresses from the DHCP server but it appears that if the first DNS on the list does not respond, the connection fails and the second DNS is not contacted. Anyone else seen this?

I want to use dns servers other then the one that airport extreme is using. For example I got the 172.16.1.1 (the default gateway - airport extreme), but I want to use the office dns servers, that are in a 10.x.x.x range.
Is there a possibility?

The Airport Extreme uses the DNS servers assigned by the network that it connects to. Is you Airport Extreme on the 10.x.x.x network? if it is then you are already using the 10.x.x.x DNS servers. Check your Airport Extreme with the Airport Utility and you will see in the Internet tab, the DNS servers used. The devices connecting to the Airport Extreme are assigned a DNS address of the Airport Extremes IP, In your case 172.16.1.1 but all DNS searches and resolution are done with the DNS servers you see in the Airport Extreme.
If you want to use some other DNS then you can override in the Airport Extreme which will be used by all devices connecting too the Airport Extreme, Or you can edit the DNS address in each devices wireless settings.

I have my ios devices DNS set via DHCP
You'd have to move to an MDM solution if you want over the air, push profile configuration setting to the devices
such as osx server Profie Manager. You may be able to do it with custom settings, I haven't tried it myself
The basic wifi setting in OSX server PM only allow settings for wifi SSID password etc
no DNS settings ip address etc. alternative MDM solutions may give you more options

HT4145 Airport Extreme no valid IP address, no DNS addresses

I have Uverse. I've disabled the wireless feature of the gateway and wired into my airport. I've created a network, and I have all my deviced connected to it. Everything was working fine. Then one day it started losing connectivity everyday. The light was green, but no internet access for the network. A quick restart would fix the problem. Now the light stays amber, and I get two problems: no valid IP, no DNS addresses. Please help.

I just wanted to add what Apple Support walked me through. Worked perfectly. Similar to some of the posts here. This assumes you have finished the setup of the Airport using DHCP to obtain the IP automatically from Comcast and it says the IP is invalid.
Power off\on Sequence
1, Power off Comcast Modem. Remove Battery back up, if it has one. Disconnect the coax cable.
2. Power off Airport Extreme
3. Let both sit for 3 minutes.
4. Reconnect coax cable to Comcast modem and replace battery and power up.
5. Wait a minute or two to make sure the Comcast modem is completely up and then Power on the Airport Extreme.
(When AP asks for DNS, Type in both addresses below)

Freyfisher: I had the same problem whenn I switched to the Airport Extreme yesterday. Here is what I did:
1: uplugged modem for 30 sec. and detached all ethernet cables. Plugged back in and reattached airport extreme cable after all lights were solid on the modem. Then, I went into Airport Utility and selected, "Base Station"> "restore default settings". Then" Base Station"> Restart. Then go through setup assistant again. If no luck, try setting IPv4 to 10.0.1.2, subnet to 255.255.255.0, router to 10.0.1.1. IPv6 set to OFF if having trouble. DNS adresses: 75.75.75.75, 75.75.76.76, search domain hsd1.ST.comcast.net where "ST" is your two-letter State abbrev. Hope this helps someone....

HH5 issuing wrong IP and DNS address

My Win7 desktop pc is connected via ethernet to a HH5 and worked until this morning when it wouldn't connect to the internet. Various restarts of pc and HH didn't work so I checked the properties of the pc network. It stated that the IP address was valid (192.168.1.65) but the DNS was 192.168.0.254 instead of 192.168.1.254. After I changed it it worked OK so I manually set it to the DNS values in the HH5 setup of 62.6.40.162.
All is working on my pc but now my win7 laptop is having the same problem when connected wirelessly to the HH. Also my Brother wireless printer wouldn't connect so I restarted it's network wizard which seemed to work until I checked the IP address and it's 192.168.0.104 so can't be seen by other devices.
However, assorted iPads and iPhones all seem to connect and get the correct IP and DNS addresses OK giving good internet access.
This only started this morning and as far as I know nothing has changed.
What is going on ?
Oh and I have already tried a factory reset of the HH5 by sticking a pin in the reset hole.

Try disabling IPv6 on the Windows machines.
This suggestion by forum member gg30340, should fix the problem.
Select Start
In the Start Search field type ncpa.cpl and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
In the new window, right-click on your Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
In the This connection uses the following items section, remove the tick beside (i.e. disable) Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then press OK.
Left click on Internet Protocol IPV4, click on properties. Check the options to obtain IP address and DNS Server address automatically.

I just purchased & installed Mac OS X Server 10.5.4.
I would like to host a website & i think the DNS address is wrong. What do I set it at?

Your post is a little vague on details.
Is this server used only for your web site? If so it doesn't matter what the machine thinks it is, what matters is the hostname that users use to get to your server.
Beyond that, you don't say what your hostname is which might provide a clue as to what you need to do. For example, the 'fix' if the hostname is 'wrong' because you typoed it is radically different from the hostname being 'wrong' because you get a name in your ISP's domain rather than yours.
So please explain what you <expect</i> (or want) and how that differs from what you currently have.

The first problem windows 7-8.1 got IP adress and connect he public HotSpot but cannot load login page or any other page. It does not work with it.

For changing the MAC address for Windows 7 is designed with some limitation, we cannot get over it. Thanks for your understanding.
Under Windows 7, the possible range of spoofed addresses for wireless adapters that can be set is limited. To be used by Windows 7, a spoofed MAC address should have 0 as a least significant bit (unicast) and 1 as a second least significant
bit (locally administered) in the second nibble. Thus possible values for the second nibble are limited to 2, 6, A and E.
In other words
MAC address: “XY-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX” “X” can be anything hexadecimal. The hexadecimal “Y”, written in binary format, is Y: “kmnp”, where “p” is the least significant bit;
p=0 --> unicast;
p=1 --> multicast;
n=0 --> globally assigned MAC;
n=1 --> locally administered;
So, actually MAC can be changed to any combination in which p=0 and n=1;
“Y” can be 2, 6, A or E.
So the possible MAC addresses in Windows 7 for wireless adapters:

Safari 5 and DNS address?

I've been having this problem every since I got my laptop a month ago... I have a wireless router that's connected to a PC, and I use wireless on my laptop. My old laptop was a PC, and the internet connection was just fine on it. However, I'm having issues with my MacBook Pro. When I first turned on my laptop after taking it out of the box, Airport detected my wireless router and connected me to the internet. Obviously, I used Safari 5 as my browser and although it works... it doesn't load the pages as fast as it should. It even stops loading at times. Usually, I quit Safari and reopen Safari and it works and if it doesn't, I click on the reload button or just keep re-opening Safari until it does work... buttt I am tired of doing that now. So after a lot of attempts by trial and error, I think I found the solution and was wondering if anyone could confirm this with me. I went to my router's IP address and I looked at the settings. I looked at the router's DNS settings and I copied and pasted that router setting into the DNS settings on my laptop for the wireless network. Now, my internet seems to be working... but then again it has only been 5 minutes. So my question is... the router's DNS has to match the wireless network's DNS address?
Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question... I'm not an expert when it comes to internet, LAN, proxies, and etc. settings. Thank you!

DNS is what turns www.apple.com (a domain name) into 118.215.101.15 - the physical address of the hardware the web site is running on.
You only really need one DNS server but most ISPs give a secondary/backup one if the first fails.
You can also use many/any of the public DNS servers (Tuttle shows 8.8.8.8 as his primary lookup for example) you don't have to stick with your ISP's - sometimes external servers are faster.

EA6900 Bridge mode setup - not getting proper DNS addresse

I have an EA6900 that I am trying to use just as an access point (have an existing sonicwall as my internet connection / router device)
Here are the steps I have completed
I have logged in to the modem, and created a modem password - can log into modem wirelessly with modem password
I went into the connectivity settings and selec ted bridge mode - with auto IPv4 settings
I get the right IP address segment on my laptop, but the DNS addresses are not from my network (not even the settings from my sonicwall)
I then set the IPv4 settings manually, and enterred a static IPv4 address, as well as the gateway (as my sonicwall), and the DNS addresses of 2 of my servers as well as an external DNS server address
When I connect to the EA6900 with a laptop, I still do not get the DNS addresses I have enterred in the fields on the EA6900 connectivity setup screen
I even tried to enter my server as a gateway - not the sonicwall, and that does not work either (laptop gets the same DNS server addresses)
Any way to do this?

That DNS are you seeing on the devices?

Static NAT to inside DNS address

I'm struggling to address an issue where as a policy I have internal virtualized/clustered servers on reserved DHCP addresses on a separate VLAN, and occasionally there is a situation where by the guests change hosts and end up on another VLAN (for whatever reason) or with a different IP address.
This isn't an issue for my internal users because all our communications works off DNS addresses, but I have a natted FTP server that whenever it changes IP/VLAN, i have to manually change the natted address on my ASA.
ex
static (inside,Outside) 100.100.100.101 192.168.100.39 netmask 255.255.255.255
would like to use a DNS address of ftp.domainname.com instead of the IP address so that if the inside IP changes I don't have to rewrite the static rule every time.
Is there any facility to do this with the ASA?

Not possible to do it on the ASA. You will need to use the ip address on the Nat statements.

Now I have to point out that going ballistic has certain connotations but posting on an internet forum is not one of them.
I appear to be one of thousands who are all expressing their outrage in a rational and intelligent manner which cannot be said for your lebvel 4 + collegues on this forum.
Finally there has been an ongoing issue wiith the iPad 3 Wifi on certain wifi only models , I have not encountered it and it seems clear neither have you. That of course does not discount the fact that many others have experienced this issue , an issue which may reveal itself to you or I in the future particularly as I have only been using mine for a fortnight.

DNS addresses (master and slave) + personalizing the url address

Hello.
My name is Fernando and I published my site using MobileMe (www.fernandoingles.com).
It’s working already really well.
But since I’m from Brazil, I built one in Portuguese as well.
And since the common site endings here are .br I’m trying to purchase the www.fernandoingles.com.br as well but in order to be able to actually buy the site I have to give them two DNS addresses of the place I’m publishing the website with.
(one ‘Master’ and one ‘Slave’).
How can I get those addresses?
And another thing is that I also have my bands site’s published under my main domain name (fernandoingles.com) with my main MobileMe account (but I have the family pack now).

I purchased those Urls using GoDaddy and they are all properly forwarded already, which means that when the person types those addresses above it already goes to the correct site.
But what shows on the actual url above is (http://www.fernandoingles.com/fernandoingles.com/Pipe.html).
And what I would like to appear is only the addresses (www.pipeusa.net and www.pipebrasil.com) instead of my name before them.
I bought the family pack so that I would have more space and etc... and already put those addresses ((www.pipeusa.net and www.pipebrasil.com and fernandoingles.com.br) as their main domain.
But since I’m publishing them all using my own iWeb how could I make those extra sites work as their own main sites?
Would it work if I log in with the desired MobileMe sub-account (let’s say www.pipeusa.net) and then go to iWeb, move that site to the top and them publish it?

Since I manage all those sites myself could I manage them all within the same 'log in' or each and every time I need to make a change on one of those sites I must 'log out' of whatever account I'm in and then 'log in' into the account that the change needs to be made?
And whenever I 'log in' into those accounts (the ones that have the respective domains) should I replace on iWeb before I publish the top site with the one I want to as the main domain or can I just not do anything at all?
And about the DNS address issue,

SM20 : IP/DNS address Terminal column

Hi,
     English not my main language sorry in advance.
     I've set a Security Audit Log (SM19/SM20 and mofided my instance profile -> rsau/enable, rsau/local/file, rsau/max_diskspace/local, rsau/selection_slots)
     All working well but when i check logs (sm20) the 'Terminal' of the user logged in/off with the SAPGUI from a windows workstation is the NETBIOS name (%COMPUTERNAME%) of his workstation instead of the IP/DNS address (on linux it's the local hostname - on redhat /etc/sysconfig/network) .Of course i don't have this problem when using web client.
     So here my question : Is it possible on SAP to log IP/DNS address instead of NETBIOS name/hostname of a client using SAPGUI when using audit strategy ? If yes, what do i have to modify and where (client or server side)
     We use : SAPGUI 7.10 (Windows version) and ECC6 server kernel 7.0

SM04 and/or Table USR41 works great but only if user is connected. I don't have history.
I must be able to log login/ip address (and it seems not possible with audit log)
The only way i've found googling is to activate user exit in function EXIT_SAPLSUSF_001(module TH_USER_INFO and/or TERMINAL_ID_GET) to populate specific table
As i'm not an expert on SAP, i've understood it's something i have to code on ABAP but can't really know how to and where to do it.
If someone have already made it or can help making it ...

RE6500 system time not set and, why set a DNS address?

How do I set the RE6500 system time to current day if it's showing January 1970? It is connected to the router on both frequencies and the extender output is working on both frequencies. I have set the RE6500 to a static address of 192.168.1.3 as the router address is 192.168.1.1. In the RE6500 the default gateway is set to the router address of 192.168.1.1. Is it necessary to set the DNS address in the RE6500 as the router is the default gateway?

Hi Chadster766; thanks for the prompt reply. I tried using the external primary DNS address set in the router - saving and rebooting - and when that didn't work, I used the same IP address as the router 192.168.1.1. That didn't work either; I did a warm re-boot of the computer after setting the DNS in the RE6500. What am I missing or, should I reinstall the RE6500 and use the default DNS settings? I'm using Windows 7 Sp1 and the RE6500 icon does not appear in Network, so it appears to be an issue between Windows and the RE6500.
