I currently have a AP-1242AG access point that is providing dhcp addresses for a stub network. Is there a way to define the dns server in the dhcp scope?

    You mean Snow Leopard Server, right? In which case, yes.

    Do you intend to make a Windows domain controller? If so, you can't. Mac OS X Server includes a Samba server which can handle parts of a Windows directory system, but it can't emulate a full Windows Active Directory server which has way more elements.
    On the other hand, if you just mean to create a directory server for your network then, just like the DNS and DHCP server response above, you click a couple of checkboxes in Server Admin and add your directory-specific data via Workgroup Manager (one of the bundled Server apps).

  • Sles dns and dhcp; OR NOWS SBE dns and dhcp

    Ok, I'm finally to the state of setting up dns and dhcp. From what I read the NOWS way is to set it up in the sbsadmin web interface. That seems to use different backend programs than the sles dns and dhcp programs. For instance I think I read that the NOWS uses dhcpd, whereas in yast it says it uses dhcp-server.
    SHOULD I use the NOWS way, or the SLES way for dns and dhcp? Looks like the sles way is more easily configured and managed, but I don't know if it will not be functional for my NOWS users.

    NOWS SBE doesn't provide a capability to manage DNS/DHCP other than by editing the config files. I would be much more comfortable doing what you are doing however you have to be careful. NOWS SBE sometimes installs modified OES components (or used to) so one never knows what to expect when deviating from a standard NOWS SBE install.

  • Custom DNS and DHCP?

    When I configure my Airport Extreme to use DHCP to get the WAN IP address but manually configure DNS servers, it doesn't use the DNS servers I specify, it only uses the DNS servers that came from DHCP. I understand that GENERALLY if you use DHCP, you WANT to use the DNS servers specified by the DHCP server, but in this case, I do not - I want to use specific DNS servers.
    Is there a way to configure this? It allows me to enter those even when using DHCP, but it's not obeying the ones I configured. It will only obey the specified DNS when I configure the address statically.

    With serveradmin tools on Lion Server service administration is easy to assign to junior administrators.  How is this done in OSX Server 2.2 with Mountain Lion?

    I will.  Unfortunately, I need to focus first on getting a collabd/wiki/calendar issue resolved.  But, I'll definitely be coming back because I need to set up an admiistrator with restricted rights too.  I skipped past Lion and came straight from SLS.  I still have that server and may be able to go back and poke around.  But, if you used to be able to do with with serveradmin, I'd still think you could, at least from the CLI.

  • Radius, and DHCP DNS info

    I have recently turned on the Radius server, and it seems to work fine, and has taken control of my Airport base station which is great. I only have one problem which is that the DHCP info provided by the server to the clients only seems to give one of the 2 DNS addresses that I have listed in the DHCP server info section. This is rather frustrating as it worked fine with WPA!
    Any thoughts?

    I just upgraded from a 2008 domain to 2012. I followed all the best practices, set up new 2012 DC and transferred all roles to it then removed the 2008 server. I just have the one DC at the moment and it's running both DNS and DHCP. Ever since we've had some odd DNS issues which usually require a reboot of the server to fix. Now at this point I'm digging through DNS and DHCP and seeing that a lot of client IP addresses are not matching up. DNS does not have the correct IP's for several clients. How can I fix dns?

    I'm trying to make the transition from NetWare to OES2. Replaced NW server at a remote location (connected by T1) with an OES2 box. It is on a different subnet. Somehow in trying to get the OES2 dns/dhcp to work I have lost all the objects still under NW. DNS and DHCP still works I just cannot see the servers, zones, pools leases etc. I can find them in ConsoleOne. The OES2 is in a sub container of our main context. I've run dsrepair util I'm blue in the face. NW 6.5 SP 8, eDir 8.8 SP5. At a loss.

    No, only one locator object exists. Should have mentioned all the OES2 objects are visible.

    You created a second NDS-GHCP locator object while configuring OES. It's
    most likely in the same OU as your new server. Delete it, and voila...
    Then, when you configure OES again, make sure you point it at the
    *existing* locator object.

  • SBS 2011 no longer issues DHCP leases: DHCP, DNS, and AD Errors

    Hi all. On early 8/13/2012 and into the morning, our UPS failed several times. The battery seems to be fine but the unit was shutting off power to the unit which means the (Windows SBS 2011 Standard) server shut off unexpectedly several times.I replaced
    the UPS.
    Now I'm trying to figure out what in the world this did to the server. It seems DHCP, DNS, and AD all have issues, as seen in the logs below. The client PC's are going offline one-by-one because the leases are expiring and it can't connect to the server
    to renew. When trying to start the DHCP service, I get a 20013 error saying it cannot be started.
    So I attempted to follow a kb article and repair the database but that didn't work because it seems the Jetpack utility is not in SBS 2011? And even at that, I'm thinking it may not even be a corrupted DHCP database due to the other errors in the event log.
    This is a small office and I only know enough to be dangerous but usually I can just follow a kb to fix any issues. But there are so many errors, this one has me stumped..   Could any Server whizzes identify the big picture here?

  • Brief HOWTO: subnet with DHCP, DNS and forwarding

    I finally took some time today to learn how to set up a DHCP server for ad-hoc direct wired connections and ended up with DNS and subnet forwarding too. I have posted a summary along with a launcher script here.
    I would be interested in feedback from users with more network configuration experience. Are there any glaring security holes or stupid mistakes in my setup? If not, I plan to add links to the relevant articles in the wiki as I would have liked more concrete examples when I was setting this up. I felt like I was just cobbling together bits and pieces from different sources and it took some trial and error to get forwarding working right with limited permissions.

    I have one client computer running Windows 7x64 (call it My Workstation) that I back the server and other client PC's up to. The clients have no problem, but after a day or two, the server can no longer "see" the My Workstation and the backup fails.
    But then when I reboot the My Workstation, the server "sees" it again!
    Furthermore, I backup a 10TB RAID 6 array on
    My Workstation to yet another client for redundancy (Call it WORKSTATION2-PC), but if I try to click on the computer icon in Windows Explorer for WORKSTATION2-PC, I get the error "Windows cannot access \\WORKSTATION2-PC. However if I type in
    the ip address or WORKSTATION2-PC, I have no problems.

  • Open DNS and internet sharing

    I am seeing strange behavior, and wondering if anyone has a thought about what is going on.
    I am at a hotel with fast internet service over ethernet, but, for whatever reason, DNS seems very slow if I use DHCP to connect (timeouts of 5-10 secs to get to a new site). If I switch to DHCP with fixed DNS, and use the Open DNS servers (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) the latency issues go away.
    The interesting thing is that I am sharing the internet connection over Airport to my wife's computer (she connecting thru DHCP). If I use a fixed DNS for MY computer, then her computer cannot connect thru internet sharing. But if I use the (slow) DHCP connection, then she can connect through mine. I have not tried setting up her computer with a fixed DNS, as she really doesn't like me to change settings on her computer
    Is this a known limitation of internet sharing, or is there something I should know?

    In more detail, if my ethernet (the computer that is doing the sharing), is set up with Configure: Using DHCP, and DNS Server: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220 (in Network Panel for Ethernet), then the computer connecting thru Internet Sharing in Sharing Panel is not able to access some or all resources thru http (ie, pages fail to load, or do not fully load).
    However, if I clear the DNS Server part in the Network Panel, thereby using the the DNS Servers supplied by the hotel, then my computer's connection to the internet is slower, with long waits (presumably due to a slow DNS server), but computers accessing the internet via Airport thru my shared connection are able to browse the internet successfully.
    I suspect that when I have a fixed DNS server in my computer, that fact is not broadcast to computers using the shared connection. But I am not an expert in TCP/IP, and may well be confused about how DHCP, DNS, and Apple's Internet Sharing work together.

  • DNS in DHCP Pool (Internal DNS issue)

    I know that we can setup multiple DNS server under DHCP pool. But I like to make sure the order.
    I have multiple branch offices.
    Let us say that Branch 1 office has a router with 10.30.1.1 as default gateway.
    Our internal DNS is 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 as Pri and Sec.
    My order of DNS server is like below.
    1. gateway
    2. internal DNS
    3. public DNS provided by ISP
    I saw couple of issues that when I put internal DNS first. Particular situation is when IPsec is not working, users could not access internet through domain name because they had internal DNS which is not reachable.
    But, when gateway is first order, I am not sure whether user are able to access internal website because gateway DNS doesn't have internal DNS records.
    So, my question is that. what should be the best order for DNS setup under DHCP among default gateway, internal DNS and public DNS?  Our current setup doesn't have even gateway address, it only has internal DNS addresses only.

    Let me ask regarding external DNS forwarding.
      I like to know the process of exteranl DNS.
    User --> Internal website --> OK with internal DNS
    User --> External website --> Internal DNS forwarding to External DNS
    We have our own external DNS (ns), in this case, if external DNS (ns) is down, every branch users are not able to resolve any external IP because internal DNS can't get reply from external DNS?
    2nd question)
    IPsec is split-tunneled, but in this case, every DNS request goes internal DNS which is located in HQ and goes back through IPsec? Usually Split tunnel doesn't go internet traffic through IPsec but internet directly.

    what is for ip name-server x.x.x.x   when I setup ip name-server 8.8.8.8 and I tried to ping 8.8.8.8 from router, it didn't work. Am i missing something?

  • Client dns and internet connection

    Hi,
    Running 10.5.5 Server with basic DNS for inter clients to access AFP/SMB and Wiki services via Open Directory. IP address is 192.168.1.10
    Clients currently receive internet via DHCP from a router and Network preferences autofills DNS and search domains with router address 192.168.1.1 and RP614v4 respectively.
    If I add the server IP and search domain, I can't see the server via DNS name unless I reverse the order in the fields (192.168.1.10 and ######.private). However this turns the internet connection to snail pace.
    How can I get the DNS to work for both the internal server and internet connection?

    If your DNS server is running correctly, there's no reason why it should resolve any slower than the router. The fact you're mentioning it implies that the delay is significant so I'll guess that your clients are requesting an address from your server, but that's timing out so they're falling back to the router before proceeding.
    You should check your DNS server to make sure it's set to be recursive (so it answers queries for non-local domains, too). That way the clients can get all lookups from your server and you should be good to go.

  • Solaris 10 zone configuration with sysidcfg and dhcp and hostname

    Excuse me if I look like a n00b... it's probably because I'm a n00b.
    I've been struggling in the dark for more than 2 days now and I'm wondering if I'm thinking about this all wrong...
    I have stand-alone server where I need to run zones. I want to create zones and automagically configure them at boot (read: by running a script). So here's what I need...
    A zone
    starting from unconfigured state
    whose hostname is not the same as the zone name
    using corporate DHCP to get its IP address
    with DNS config coming from the DHCP server
    registering its address the DNS
    with a preconfigured root password
    (I don't own the corporate DHCP or DNS servers, I can't put my own DHCP or DNS servers on the network.)
    I would lke to create the zone, throw some config at it, then boot the zone and walk away. I am using zones with exclusive-IP. I can construct the zones and manually configure them once they're started to have DHCP, my own name, registered IP address with DNS and everything else I have specified above. But I don't want to do it manually...
    Sysidcfg seems to do some of what I want but not entirely.
    In sysidcfg I can set the root_password, the primary interface using DHCP, DNS server. I can't set a hostname in sysidcfg AND use configure it for DHCP. So the hostname is not what I want it to be after the zone is started and ready to go. The DHCP server is providing the DNS configuration, Solaris does not seem to honour it, but i'll ignore that for the moment.
    I have tried various combinations of using sysidcfg, /etc/nodename, /etc/hostname.+interface+ and /etc/dhcp.+interface+ but I can't find any combination that actually works.
    I can write to the zonestorage/etc/nodename to set the nodename, that works. But it does not match the DHCP address, so I get prompted for a new name service because it can't find a DNS entry for the name.
    I can write to the zonestorage/etc/hostname.+interface+ and /etc/dhcp.+interface+ (to get the system to register its name with the DNS server after getting its DHCP address) but then I get a system with no root password and no DNS configuration, even though they are set in the sysidcfg file.
    I can write a script that gets part of the way using sysidcfg and /etc/... files, then boots the zone and then runs a bunch of voodoo via zlogin commands to fix all the stuff that couldn't be done 'properly', but that's not a 'boot and walk away' environment. I can write a script that uses sysidcfg and hacks around with other files in /etc (like nsswitch.conf, resolv.conf), but that just feels likes a dirty hack to fix something that wasn't done properly in the first place.
    So where am I going wrong and how do I do it right (within the constraints defined)? Why can't I configure, boot and walk away?

    I don't think the config is messed up after the installation. I think the installation is fine, it's just not what I want :-)
    I'm trying to decouple the zonename from the system name and get DNS registrations working. After installation, a DHCP client can get its hostname from DNS but I'm trying to do it the other way around. I want the DHCP client specify its own hostname, get an address from the DHCP server and then register its hostname with DNS. If the system gets its name from DNS/DHCP then I have to configure those to provide the system name and I don't own the DHCP/DNS infrastructure. These zones are for a development/QA environment, so we create and reconfigure these frequently. Hence the need to specify the system name within the zone and register that name in the DNS.
    I have tried fiddling with the PARAM_REQUEST_LIST but it does not seem to be working as I expect. :-$ Removing 12 did not help with setting the hostname from the system. DNS does not have a registered name for this system anyway, so even if it tried to get a name for this system, it would get nothing.
    I also do want the DHCP to change the DNS server and domain name, but this does not happen even though my dhcpagent includes 6 and 15 in the PARAM_REQUEST_LIST. I still have to set them in the sysidcfg file because it is always ignored in Solaris (S10u8 with 10_Recommended 30-Jul-2010)
    As stated, I know I can hack around with the system after it has booted. But I'm trying to configure the system before it starts and let it take care of itself and not have to touch it. Frankly I'm surprised that the sysidcfg does not allow you to set a hostname name when you are using DHCP, that the default DHCP configuration does not register the system name with the DNS server, and the DNS config from the DHCP response is ignored. Even a sys-unconfiged system requires DNS configuration during initial boot, when I know that the DHCP response contains DNS information.
    FYI: Windows systems using DHCP work as expected in this respect by default, i.e. set system name, use DHCP --> system gets address from corporate DHCP, DNS settings are set from DHCP information, DNS registration is made for system name.
    I'm working around this at the moment... I call my zone by the system name I want, I hardcode the DNS settings in the sysidcfg file and I create the hostname.+nic+ and dhcp.+nic+ files in the zone storage to get the system to register its name with DNS, them boot.

  • Weird DNS and GATEWAY IP Address

    iPad 1 and iPad 2, join wireless network, pulls 192.168.1.199 for a DNS and GATEWAY address, force a STATIC (manual) of 192.168.1.1 works, revert back to DHCP, keeps 192.168.1.1 until offsite and attempt to reconnect.
    Tried Renew Lease, still pulls 192.168.1.199, have to always force 1.1 and revert back to DHCP afterwards.
    Router has static IP (Cablevision), 255.255.255.248 Subnet with OPEN-DNS (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) Even if I use Cablevision, Google, Verizon DNS, always pulls a 1.199 IP for GW and DNS.
    Tried 3 different routers, still weird.
    Any ideas?

    5>One method is setting the router so that the server's MAC address is tied to a specific IP.
    Otherwise you can edit /etc/hostname.<interface> and place a static address there, forgoing DHCP services from the router. You may want the address to appear outside the router's DHCP range.

  • Default router and DHCP

    I connect to a WiFi router with internal DHCP server. When I set my MacBook Pro to get its address via DHCP, it gets the proper DNS and default gateway addresses, but can't reach the Internet.
    If I manually assign an IP address, and enter the same default gateway address as what comes down from DHCP, everything works OK.
    How can I get my Internet connection to work properly while using DHCP?

    Don't suppose you've got any proxy servers there? All "connected to network" means is that you have a live connection from your Mac to the next hop (could be a an ethernet cable that is connected from your mac to a switch, with the switch connected to nothing else for all your Mac cares!).
    Have you actually tested pinging addresses from your PC? That's your positive control. Your firewalls may be set to drop ICMP (ping) traffic. If that's the case, then trying to ping something is not a useful test. Given that you can ping to obtain an IP address from another machine in the office, i'd say you have a DNS issue somewhere too. Confirm that the other machines are not actually using an internal DNS server (it's unlikely they'll use an external DNS server as a primary). What is used at the office? Is it an Microsoft Active Directory site?
    There is definitely something different between the DHCP details and the static ones. That is the only way that you can have differing results like that (unless it is not an IP problem but something external to it such as a proxy).
