DNS Benchmarks are important.

Below are posted the results of a recent DNS Benchmark test using the DNS servers that I have set in my router DNS settings section. Not sure if the HH/HH3 has that option as I use a Belkin N1.
The reason I have posted the below info is because after clicking the PPPoE settings and accepting the DNS servers that our ISP puts in automatically my performance was unreliable.
So I unclicked the  "Get DNS from ISP" option and replaced the DNS servers with the ones in the report below, which judging by the benchmark report was a good move.
The DNS benchmark tester I use allows you to setup a database of every DNS server that is nearest to you and reliable, [no router crashes,or modem cutouts],and a stable profile.
Just google "DNSBench".
The results summary, conclusions, and recommendations from your most recent run of this DNS benchmark are provided below. Please carefully consider the implications of making any changes to your system's current configuration before doing so.
þ System has multiple redundant nameservers configured.
This system is currently configured to use 2 separate nameservers for DNS name resolution. This is in keeping with recommended best practice (of having at least two different nameservers) so that the temporary failure of any single nameserver will not prevent all DNS name resolution.
þ All system nameservers are alive & replying to queries.
All of this system's 2 nameservers are working and replying to queries. This is terrific because if the system's primary nameserver were to become overloaded or unavailable, even briefly, one or more backup nameservers are standing by ready to supply DNS lookup services.
þ System's nameservers are probably optimally ordered.
Windows uses DNS servers in the order they are listed under the network adapter's properties, or when obtained automatically from an ISP, in the order provided by the ISP. Windows will fall back to using the second, third, and other nameservers only when the first listed nameserver fails to respond. So if the first nameserver happened to be very slow, but working, everything would be slowed down. Consequently, the order of nameserver listing should match their order of decreasing performance . . . which is probably how this system is currently configured:
Usage Order   Nameserver IP   Speed Rank
           1      194. 74. 65. 68      1
           2      194. 72.  0. 98      2
Why only "probably" ?
Only "probably" because there wasn't enough of a statistically significant difference between their timings to be able to make any claims with at least 95% confidence.  Here are the details:
When this benchmark is allowed to finish, it will have collected approximately one hundred and fifty (150) DNS performance samples from each nameserver being tested.  Although this is sufficient to generate a good average performance estimate, if the collection of sampled values are too widely spread apart (in other words, not a lot of agreement among samples), it is impossible to know with "statistical certainty" (to be 95% sure) how individual nameservers compare to each other.
Therefore, even if the ranking shown above appears to be out of order, the differences are not statistically significant, and you should not be concerned.  If you were to re-run the benchmark you might get a different outcome.  This benchmark conclusion page will inform you when a problem exists that is statistically significant, and will then advise you that your DNS nameserver settings should be changed.  But that is not the case with the benchmark results that were just obtained.
ý System nameservers are SLOWER than 14 public alternatives!
This benchmark found 14 publicly available DNS nameservers that are reliably faster than the slowest nameserver currently being used by this system. If you were to adjust your system's configuration to use the faster of these nameservers instead of what it is currently using, your DNS lookup performance, and all use of the Internet, would be improved.
Recommended Actions:
With at least 95% certainty:  Based upon a statistical analysis of the spread in timing value samples received during the benchmark, there is at least a 95% certainty that the performance conclusions stated above are correct. But even so, since changing DNS nameservers requires thought and effort, it's something you want to be sure about. Therefore, since these results represent a single snapshot in time, you may wish to confirm that the faster alternative nameservers are consistently faster than your system's currently configured nameservers, and that those public alternatives don't have any negative characteristics such as being colored orange to signify that they redirect mistaken URLs to an advertising-laden search page rather than returning an error (which will be a concern to some users).
You may also wish to check the relative performance at different times of day to make sure that the performance improvement over your system's current nameservers is reliable throughout the day.
And you may wish to make sure that the alternative nameservers are enough faster than what you are currently using for the improvement to be worth changing away from what you're currently using. (This test is only saying that it's 95% sure they are any amount faster.)
þ This system's nameservers are 100% reliable.
DNS reliability is extremely important, since lookup requests that are dropped and ignored by nameservers cause significant delays in Internet access while the querying system waits for a reply. The system is then finally forced to reissue the query to the same or to backup nameservers. While your system is patiently waiting for a reply, you are impatiently waiting to get on with your Internet access.
During this benchmark test, all of the system's nameservers tested returned a reply for every request sent. It doesn't get any better than that. Very nice.
þ All of this system nameservers return errors.
This is a GOOD thing!  Some DNS providers, such as OpenDNS and even the Earthlink, Roadrunner and Comcast ISPs, redirect incorrectly entered URLs to their own advertising-laden marketing-driven interception page instead of simply returning an error to the web browser. But this system's nameservers are returning errors when asked to lookup non-existent domain names.
þ System nameservers are replying to all query types.
During the development of this DNS Benchmark we discovered that the routers used by some pre-release testers were not returning results for the benchmark's Uncached and/or Dotcom testing queries. Even though these queries are admittedly unusual, they are completely valid. So the only conclusion was that those few routers were inherently defective. The good news here is that your nameservers are replying to these unusual but valid queries.
The above is for info only and posted incase it might be of some use to anyone losing thier connection frequently.

I have Iphoto '09, version 8.1.2 (424). I am having an identical problem.  All my pictures are imported into Iphoto when I downloaded them from my camera.  Until recently, I thought that the pictures were actually saved in the library.  Since I need to crop my pictures for the web, and Iphoto doesn't do that, I purchased Photoshop Elements to do that.  To my surprise, when I try to get a picture from Iphoto to Photoshop, it can't be done. That was when I realized, after wasting a lot of time, that the photos are not in the Iphoto library.
I started naming the pictures on Iphoto so I had a recognizable file name to open on Photoshop. Couldn't find it.  I looked in the Backup folder and the Transfer software folder (I have a Nikon camera), and the names I entered in the Iphoto display, could not be found.
When I am trying to upload a photo to the web, I get the Finder folder showing  with an active folder called "Photos" under "Media", which only displays Iphoto and PhotoBooth.  This is a folder name that I cannot find in my HD anywhere when I look for it.  If I edit a picture with Photoshop, I am not going to save it back to Iphoto (not sure whether it will work properly).  How do I get my folder of edited photos to show when I want to upload a picture to the web?
Where (the name of the folder) do I find the pictures I see displayed on the Iphoto library, including any name changes, keywords added, and so on?

  • How to Delete imported JPEGS after matching RAW files are imported as masters

Using a 5D Mark III and shoot JPEG (SD) and RAW (CF).
Aperture 3.5.1, using a managed library
Perviously, using a 7D so new to shooting JPEG and RAWs from an aperture Aperture workflow standpoint.
I know that i can import the JPEGs > delete images that do not make the cut > then import the matching RAW files in the import dialogue that correspond to the JPEGs in the Aperture Library.
I use the RAW files as my Camera Master images and once the RAW files are imported, the smaller resolution JPEGs are no longer needed or viewed in my normal edit workflow.  I only need the JPEGs to quickly go through the images to find out which RAW files i need to import at a later time to increase the speed of import > edit > deliver.
    My Assumptions:
    1.  Logic would lead me to believe that after import the user should see a stack like image representation with whatever file type is considered Master to be on top and the viewable secondary file type on the bottom.  clicking on the image stack should allow you to see both file types as you would normally see with image stacks with the same files types.  This is not the case...  What am i missing here?
    2.  Logic again would lead me to believe that when i have the ability to delete one of the 2 image types as i do not need both in the end.  After the import process is complete and RAWs are backed up, I want to delete the JPEG files as they are just taking up more space on my DAS drive array...  There is no need to keep a duplicate of every file in both JPEG and RAW format.  This is not the case as when i delete the JPEG or RAW, both files formats are deleted simultaneously.  What am i missing here?
    Problems: (correspond to Assumptions above)
    1.  I do not seem to have access to both images (JPEG & RAW) in a stack where i can expand and close the stack to see both?  It seems like i only have access to the image type i have selected as Master?  This seems counter intuitive to what the workflow should be as why would aperture 'lock the secondary file types away' so you can't easily view both file types as the same time for comparison?
2a.  Reality seems to be that i do not have access to the JPEG and RAW image files.  I can only see one at a time by selecting the images and choosing 'make JPEG master’ and then respectively... 'make RAW master', but you can't see both at the same time for file comparison.
2b.  Also, I can't find a way to delete the JPEG images after the RAW files have been imported.  I would presume most professional photographers shoot RAW and do not shoot JPEG as their camera master or editing master images.  I do not understand why aperture has captured both as a pair in the library that does not allow me to delete the JPEG (in this case) as i have selected the RAW as my master.
If someone can please help...  The function seems like either i am missing something obvious or that the implemented function of using RAW + JPEGs files for import is broken from a real world workflow standpoint.

    leonie...
thank you for clearing that up for me.
I think that at this point it is silly to use the JPEG+RAW import functionality as it seems that it takes longer to do the above steps than to just import only the RAW files and press on from there.
I seems what i have done in the past of only importing the RAW files and then using the quick preview functionality to reduce image load times is the best thing in can come up with without keeping 'duplicates' in the database.
That really baffels me that there is no built in functionality to remove the JPEG from a RAW+JPEG pair and i wonder how the real world photographers who help Apple test and implement software to solve real world workflow problems thought the JPEG+RAW import was going to be used.
I do understand that i can use a smaller JPEG file size to reduce the bloat of the database, but used over hundreds of thousands of images is certainly going to make a dent in my total aperture database size and therefore storage needs down the road.
If you have any other workflow thoughts, or know of a 3rd party plugin/ etc... to fix this obvious shortcoming then i am all ears..
thank you again Leonie and have a great week

When importing tracks from a CD to ITunes, only 10 of the 13 songs are imported. How can I display and import the missing three? Thanks.

It depends on eaxactly what is wrong with the old laptop. If you're lucky the drive can be extracted and connected to a new computer to extract the data. Otherwise see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Custom Program to update the GL journal DFF each time journals are imported

    Hi Guru's,
I have a requirement that I need to build a custom program to update the GL Journal Lines DFF. This program will be executed each time sub-ledger journals are imported to GL.
OPM, AP, AR, Inv & OM will be the Journal sources for those the journal line DFF needs to be updated.
Kindly could anyone give me the best way of doing it.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Genoo

    Hello Geno,
A technical solution is when Journal Import program is launched, the updates of DFF are done after the creation of journals in GL.
So no need to have a custom concurrent program to update the Journals.
You can customize the gl_import_hook_pkg.post_module_hook package to call a custom package and do the updates for journals.

i nid to restore the file which i suddenly delete in download.. i was about to delete the files which are not important but i suddenly delete the files which are important... how can i restore it??

Check the Windows recycle bin, you may be able to recover the files from there. Right-click on the recycle bin icon on the desktop and select Open. This will open Explorer, if the files are listed there, right-click on them and choose Restore.
If the files are not in the recycle bin, you can try a file recovery utility such as recuva - http://www.piriform.com/recuva

  • OTL Time Cards to PA Integration. - All Time cards are imported into One OU

    Hi,
At our site, we have implemented OTL to support PA. (No Payroll/HRMS).
We have created multiple selfservice Time Resp for each Operating Units. The MO Operating Unit for the responsibility is set to corresponding OU for each responsibility.
    The issue is that,
When the Time cards are approved and the PRC: Transaction Import is ran for each operating unit (again difft responsibility for each OU), it is not importing the time cards into the respective OU in PA. Rather When we run the PRC: Transaction Import in US operating unit, all the Timecards are imported in the US OU.
We found, For all the OTL time cards, the ATTRIBUTE1 for the "SECURITY" Attribute category is 84 (which is US OU) in hxc_time_attributes table.
which configruation controls this ? Why the MO: Operating Unit is not used to populate the value or is there any other profile which needs to be set to get the right OU?
Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Chidambaram

Please check and confirm whether you have the profile 'HR:Business Group' set to corresponding BGs for the respective time entry responsibilities.

    Hi,
IChat uses better Video Compression than Skype does.
On a top flight Mac you can send a 640 X 480 pixel frame up to 30 frames a sec.
    Skype can't match this.
iChat in Video is Peer to Peer. (you can actually Log out of the Buddy list)
Skype seems to borrow something from everyone's bandwidth to make connections.
What do you mean by Business account Tracking ?
iChat Adds (or can add) the First Name, Last Name of your Buddies and create an Address Book Entry
Whether you mark those cards connected with a  company is up to you.
(I have heard of issues with earlier version of iChat and the Address Book that "saw" the Company Name as the part of the Name and linking several Screen Names to the one name
Audio on a Mac using Skype tend to be the same as the streaming needs are less.
However you have to rely on any PCs audio abilities from PCs which may not be to the same standard.
Mac to PCs in iChat and AIM can be difficult though.  (It should work but it rarely as simple as Plug and go)
Skype may suit your needs better on ocassions.

  • Settings added when when images are imported

When I import images into Lightroom3 the images have already been tweaked.  How do I turn off the setting as the images are imported?  Second, when I attempt to send images to Photoshop for editing Lightroom makes a copy, how can I stop this fom happening?

Two things to avoid that LR applies "tweaking" on import.
    1) Make sure that the <Apply Auto-tone adjustments> box is unchecked. You find it under <Preferences> in the <Presets tab>.
    2) In the Import Dialog on the right hand side, in the panel <Apply During Import>, make sure that <Develop Settings> shows <None>.
There is no way to avoid making a copy when you open a RAW-file in PS. PS can not save a file as a true RAW-file; there is a Photoshop-RAW but that is not a true RAW-file like the one that your camera creates.Since PS can save your edits only in a different format than true RAW, by necessity a copy has to be made.
If you have JPG's in LR (or TIFFs or PSD's) and want to edit them in PS, you can choose <Open Original> and then no copy is made. But when you open these as <Edit a Copy with LR Adjustments> then again a copy is made.

  • DNS records are not 100% correct

For a while now we've been noticing that some DNS records are not correct. The records are pointing to incorrect IP addresses. One by one I open the record, update the IP, then replicate across all domain controllers.
What would cause the hostname of one machine to point to another IP address?

I believe what you're seeing is from DHCP-DNS registration. You may have duplicates, or incorrect data for records that can't be updated by DHCP service or the DHCP client due to permissions on the record. You may also not have scavenging in place.
    In summary:
Configure DHCP Credentials. The credentials only need to be a plain-Jane, non-administrator, user account. But give it a really strong password.
Set DHCP to update everything, whether the clients can or cannot.
Set the zone for Secure & Unsecure Updates. Do not leave it Unsecure Only.
Add the DHCP server(s) to the Active Directory, Built-In DnsUpdateProxy security group. Make sure ALL other non-DHCP servers are NOT in the DnsUpdateProxy group. For example, some believe that the DNS servers or other DCs not running DHCP should be in it.
They must be removed or it won't work. Make sure that NO user accounts are in that group, either. (I hope that's crystal clear - you would be surprised how many will respond asking if the DHCP credentials should be in this group.)
On Windows 2008 R2 or newer, DISABLE Name Protection.
If DHCP is co-located on a Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 2012 DC, you can and must secure the DnsUpdateProxy group by running the following:
    dnscmd /config /OpenAclOnProxyUpdates 0
Configure Scavenging on ONLY one DNS server. What it scavenges will replicate to others anyway. Set the scavenging NOREFRESH and REFRESH values combined to be equal or greater than the DHCP Lease length.
For specifics and step by steps, and good discussions on what's going on in the background and what to expect:

I have just started using the computer and have no idea what old compressed files are or if they are important,so I have not deleted any ,and now they are taking up alot of space.

You should have the old Pages '08 inside the iWork folder, inside your Applications folder.
Open your old files in Pages '08 > Menu > File > Export > Word
