DNS - Between Active Directory Domains

Hi to all. I am in the process of migrating objects from domain A (10.26.x.x) to domain B (10.44.x.x). Servers and Services in domain A must remain visible to objects migrated to domain B. AD trust is in place (forest).
I have a laptop on site of domain A (IP 10.26.x.x) but which is a member of domain B. It can ping servers in domain A by FQDN my-server.domain.com however services running on the laptop do not use the FQDN and need to be able to ping 'my-server'.
Any advice and how I can achieve this?
Thanks,
Phil.

This issue has been resolved. A DNS suffix is now appended for the required domain via group policy.

Phil.

  • Help with setting up active directory domain controller/DNS - need this for Clustering

Disclaimer: I am new to Active Directory, so please dont rule out the obvious things I may have overlooked.
I need to set up Active Directory Domain controller on at least one server so I can run clustering. I set up the domain controller and ran Cluster validation and that failed - unable to reach writable domain controller.
When I look at my server manager AD DS complain about DNS:

  • DNS and Active Directory error 4000 server 2008

    Hello all,
My network skills aren't very good and I'm facing a dilemma. First off we have two Windows servers on the network. The newest is 2008 Standard (named Vader) and the other is 2000 (dells3). Obviously I'd like to get rid of the 2000, but the people in charge
of my budget haven't given me the option to do so and it's the only back up we have.
Earlier in the week we had lots of problems. One of our nas boxes locked everyone out who was mapped to it and it would only let me log in through the web portal. Two of our Macs our marketing department uses suddenly locked up and wouldn't let them back
in (both were part of the Active Directory). A second nas box won't let certain people map to it and for awhile I had issues logging into Vader itself.
I believe all of these problems are connected to some issues on Vader and possibly in conduction with dells3. In Server Manager under DNS I get error 4000 "The DNS server was unable to open Active Directory.
This DNS server is configured to obtain and use information from the directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it.  Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly and reload the zone. The event data is the error code."
Then under Active Directory Domain Services I get error 2042 "It has been too long since this machine last replicated with the named source machine. The time between replications with this source has exceeded
the tombstone lifetime. Replication has been stopped with this source."
Followed by more text I can post if needed.
Under File Services error 1202 "The DFS Replication service failed to contact domain controller  to access configuration information. Replication is stopped. The service will try again during the
next configuration polling cycle, which will occur in 60 minutes. This event can be caused by TCP/IP connectivity, firewall, Active Directory Domain Services, or DNS issues."
And finally if I try to open Active Directory Domains and Trusts "The configuration information describing this enterprise is not available. The server is not operational."
I'm not sure where to start or what to post that might help. Any and all help is appreciated.
Edit: Also I can only add dells3 as the DNS on Vader in the DNS Manager if I try to add Vader to itself I get an error.

It's the other way around.  Overall, I'm advising ripping the 2008 server out of AD and adding it back . Let's look at this as a series of steps:
1.) You do a force demote of the 2008 server because it's tombstoned.  This means the 2008 server is no longer a DC. You are doing a force because it doesn't have the ability to replicate.  If it could replicate, we'd just do a graceful demotion
    and be done with it.
2.) Once the 2008 server is demoted, we go to the 2000 server which holds the only good copy of AD.  From that server we run a metadata cleanup using the ntdsutil utility.  We use that utility to clean out references to the 2008 server which is
    no longer a DC.
3.) Once you have a clean AD, you can then promote the 2008 server back into Active Directory.  Make sure Vader is pointing to Dells3 as its primary DNS server before promoting or you'll run into issues.
    Hopefully that clarifies things.

  • Active directory domain services stopped after removing routing and remote access role

    Hello everyone;;
I am in deep trouble.. I did install routing and remote access and then  lost connection to the server remotely. Then I connected a monitor to the server and removed the role... then it asked me to restart the server . After logging back in I found
all my active directory service has gone... I can see red cross on active directory domain services.. Also I am able to ping other pcs but other pcs cannot ping my server..
However when I go into the active directory services, it shows all services are running except file replication service. I have tried to start that service but it give error 1053 error..
My server in  between loses LAN connection... I dont know what is going on.. Please help!!!
My  server is win 2008 R2 ser pack 1
    Only one DC....
    Has fixed ip,
    no DNS server running..

    Hi,
The File Replication Service Start Error 1053 error can be caused by damaged Windows system files. Corrupted system files entries can threaten the well-being of your computer. Many events can result in creating system file errors.
Please refer to the articles below to troubleshoot the issue:

  • The box indicating that this domain controller is the last controller for the domain is unchecked. However, no other Active Directory domain controllers for that domain can be contacted

I have 2 domain controllers running 2003 server, server1 and server2. I ran dcpromo on server1 and removed AD and removed him from the domain and disconnected from network. I then added a 2012 server
with the same name and IP address server1 with no problem. Replication from sites and services work fine on both controllers.
The new 2012 server1 is GC. I transferred all FSMO roles to server1. Again no problem and replicating using sites and services. AD on server1 is populated correctly.
Now what I had intended on doing was a dcpromo to remove server2 from the domain so I can then add another 2012 server. That is when I get the: "The box indicating that this domain controller is the last controller for the domain
is unchecked. However, no other Active Directory domain controllers for that domain can be contacted.
I have DNS installed on both servers and both look good with replicating there. Strange thing is when on the 2012 server within DNS if I right click and connect to another DNS server I can add server2 just fine but from server2 adding server1 it tells me it
    is not available.
    Help please!

    Hi,
As there is server 2012 DC (SERVER1) DC is operational in a domain then "This domain controller is the last controller for the domain" should be remain unchecked when you demote SERVER2 DC.
If you are getting error "Active Directory domain controllers for that domain can be contacted" while demoting SERVER2 DC then check the DNS pointing on both as per below article, disable windows firewall on all DC, less possiblities but worth to check if both
are different site then check the ports are open on firewall.

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/584.active-directory-replication-over-firewalls.aspx
run “ipconfig /flushdns & ipconfig /registerdns“, restart DNS server and NETLOGON service on each DC and try to demote server2 DC.
If issue reoccurs, post dcdiag /q result.
NOTE: If initial replication was completed between both DC (new 2012 and old DC) then you may remove the server2 DC from Active Directory forcefully (DCPROMO /FORCEREMOVAL) and perform metadata cleanup.

  • Forest trust unable to find Active Directory Domain Controller

I have two domains with a two-way forest trust. We'll call them ForestA and ForestB. They're on seperate subnets. ForestA's DCs are in one physical location. ForestB's DCs are in two locations, one of which is shared with A.
I'm unable to route traffic directly from the remote DC in ForestB to the subnet ForestA is on, so I created a new DC in ForestA that sits on the subnet ForestB uses (basically, I can't route between subnets via the wireless bridge between locations, but
    can within the same location).
    I found this: http://www.neomagick.net/zen/2008/11/30/using-dns-to-force-a-domain-trust-through-a-specific-domain-controller-dc/
I followed the instructions to set the new DC in forest A to be the only one the remote DC in forest B was aware of.
Nslookup ForestA.com resolves correctly to this DC, but I'm unable to validate the trust relationship, getting the error:
"Windows cannot find an Active Directory Domain Controller for the ForestA.com domain. Verify that an AD DC is available and then try again."
    I'd appreciate any help.

In the event viewer, have you found any event id's that corrospond with this error? Have you ensured all ports required are open? Windows firewall is correctly setup? NIC is properly configured?
    Statement below taken from: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc961803.aspx
If you receive the following error, ERROR_NO_LOGON_SERVERS while using the Nltest tool to query the secure channel, this is usually indicative of the inability to find a domain controller for that domain. Run nltest /dsgetdc: < DomainName > : to verify
whether you can locate a domain controller. If you are unable to find a domain controller examine DNS registrations and network connectivity.

  • Join acs express to active directory domain

i have a problem joining acs express active directory domain , both are reachable to each other in the same subnet & no firewalls between them , but when i test the connectivity it gives this error:
" required service unavailable. DNS is setup correctly , and the domain controller is reachable , however , one of the required services, such as ldap, kerberos, or global catalog service is not available. This issue may arise if there is a firewall between AD domain controller, and the ACS Express appliance"

It is sounds like a bug CSCsw29387 Join AD domain, with one DC down fails. If the ACS Express is trying to join an AD domain in a multi domain controller environment and one of the domain controllers is down, the ACS Express will fail to join the domain.

  • Active Directory domain controller could not be contacted

    Hello
    Help please.
I am trying to add a new server (2008) to domain 'bridgelimited.local' - only one DC (2003) doing everything at the moment. The plan is to add the new server, then move everything over from the old machine, then retire/upgrade the old machine and use as a backup.
I am currently trying to dcpromo on the new machine but I get the following error:
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller for domain bridgelimited.local:
The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
    (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.bridgelimited.local
Common causes of this error include the following:
    - The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are updated by the AD DC at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:
    212.50.160.100
    196.168.16.2
    - One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:
    bridgelimited.local
    local
    . (the root zone)
For information about correcting this problem, click Help.
192.168.16.2 is IP address for the DC.
Any help would be grately appreciated.
    Kind Regards

  • Active Directory Domain Services Child Domains

    I am using Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771856(v=ws.10).aspx
When I select "Add Roles" I click on "Active Directory Domain Services (Installed)" the "Next>" button is not enabled and can not be selected.
    Did I install ADDS wrong?
Is this not how you define Child Domains?
If I use the Command Line or Answer File Methods I get an error message at "ChildName".
Did I forget to install something about enabling Child Domains when installing ADDS?

    Hi,
Did you try to create a child domain on the Domain Controller? It seems like that this Server is already a DC, with Active Directory Domain Services installed.
We don’t have to enable anything in the root domain for creating child domains/new trees, we just need to run
Dcpromo or Add Role on another server which is not a DC, and select the existing domain as its parent, then the child domain will be created.
In addition, please make the existing DC as the preferred DNS server on the new server.
    I hope this helps.

  • Cisco ISE 1.2 and 2 Active Directory Domains

    Hi Support,
does anyone know whether I can perform Certificate Authentication for two different Active Directory domains using the same ISE host / deployment?
We have two forests with a trust link between them.
We have a seperate PKI in each domain.
I am thinking that the ISE can only be joined to a single domain, but because we have a trust between the two forests, the ISE can have two certificate profiles in an identity source sequence which can then use in a single authorisation policy.
I take it that I would need local certs from each CA in the local certificate store of the ISE?
We are performing a company merger and we cannot migrate users to the primary AD domain due to several reasons so we would like to use the same ISE deployment to authenticate Wireless users on both AD domains.
    Thanks
    Mario

    Mario,
This is possible.  Here are the guidelines for the Multi-Forest support in ISE 1.2:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/ise/1-2/user_guide/ise_user_guide/ise_man_id_stores.html#pgfId-1350874
You would have to set a new Certificate Authentication Profile for each domain and use the Authentication Policies to determine which of the Certificate Authentication Profiles to use.

  • Active Directory domain failed

    Hello Team,
When i joined to our active directory, everytime bui gives same error messages:
The attempt to join the Active Directory domain failed either because the clocks of the appliance and the domain controller are skewed or the administrative user
does not have the appropriate permissions to create a computer account in Active Directory.
It is recommended that NTP be used to keep clocks synchronized when using Active Directory.
Storage Appliance: 7310 One Controller, No firewall for ntp server also which connect directly NTP Domain server. Actually my believe is that no time sync issue.
    Firmware version is latest patch.
What is your idea about this issue?
i did many times this action plan: but result is same
    ActiveDirectoryTasks
    B)Joining a Domain
1.Configure an ActiveDirectory site in the CIFS context. (optional)
2.Configure a preferred domain controller in the CIFS context. (optional)
3.Enable NTP, or ensure that the clocks of the appliance and domain controller are synchronized
    to within five minutes.
4.Ensure that your DNS infrastructure correctly delegates to the ActiveDirectory domain, or add
your domain contoller's IP address as an additional name server in the DNS context.
5.Configure the ActiveDirectory domain, administrative user, and administrative password.
    6.Apply/commit the configuration.
    A)Joining aWorkgroup
    Configure theworkgroup name.
    Apply/commit the configuration.
    1. First of all LAN Compatibility Mode 4 works fine with Win 2003 (AD Server)
    2. While trying to join the AD, using a non ADMIN username and passsword will not help
Try using a username/pass which has Administrative Privileges (specifically having the rights for Account Creation in
the AD Server) on the AD server.
(I was trying by a different username/pass but it was not joing the storage to AD. It joined when i tried a user having
the privileges to create Machine Accounts in AD)
    3. For Clock Sync, the tolerance limit is upto 5 Minutes..So you can take care that the difference does not go beyond
    5 minutes.
    Thanks

Your first post to these OTN forums.
You posted your inquiry to a HARDWARE forum.
Your issue seems to be a Microsoft OS issue and you just happen to have your OS volumes on a model 7310 appliance.
I suggest you go find a forum somewhere that is hosted for Microsoft AD issues.
If you happen to need the documentation for that piece of storage hardware, there are currently three PDF's available:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19935-01/index.html
They are the Installation Guide, the hardware Administration Guide, and the Service Manual.
There are no current Oracle-published documents for that box as related to Active Directory.

  • Documentation on Active Directory Domain Rename for VMware

Aplogies if my questions are elementary. Just getting started with VMware.
We are looking to update our virtualized Active Directory domain name. I have the documentation for that, but want to make sure I have the list of articles needed to make sure the VMware is properly updated as well.
    I found the following documents:
configure host to use active directory:
    https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vsphere.security.doc%2FGUID-63D22519-38CC-4A9F-AE85-97A53CB0948A.html
    setting DNS configuration vmware
    http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vcli.examples.doc%2Fcli_manage_networks.11.8.html
    Is there anything else?
Which do I update first? The VMware info or the Active Directory.

    Hi David,
Based on my experience, you’d better pay attention to the following  two points:
    1. After you have completed the installation of Exchange 2010, you have to create an Accepted Domain of “uvwxyz.org”.
    2. If you want to use Autodiscover, you need to configure the additional settings for “uvwxyz.org”. You could refer to the article below:
    http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/exchange-server-2010/management-administration/exchange-autodiscover.html

  • Laptop (Running Windows 8.1) no longer able to print and now see message Active Directory Domain Services is not available

Have a very recent Lenovo Ideapad Laptop running Windows 8.1. Connected via USB port to HP LaserJet Pro CM1415 frw Color MFP Printer. Was able to print fine nearly 2 weeks ago, but something recently happened - either a new windows or office 2013 update
or perhaps I blew away a certain file by mistake. I can see the printer installed but cannot print to it from anything (Word, Notepad, IE, Firefox etc.). The one thing to note is that usually when I plug or unplug a USB related device, Windows 8.1 recognizes
this and makes a certain chime noise, but with the printer USB cable it never makes that noise - making me think that it never fully recognizes the printer. Also when I select the printer (from within the control panel) and right click for properties (via
admin rights) It never lets me fully connect to it.
I have tried all the usual remedies - remove, install all drivers, reinstall printer, Windows update, start/stop print spooler and all other printer related services,  etc. Its really annoying because this printer was working fine nearly 2
weeks ago. Looking for any advice now. Thanks.
    -Chris

    Hi Chris,
    à
I have tried all the usual remedies - remove, install all drivers, reinstall printer, Windows update, start/stop print spooler and all other printer related services, etc.
I noticed that you had reinstalled the printer. Just a confirmation, when un-install this printer, please check
if this printer still exist in registry. For more details, please refer to following KB.
    Registry entries for printing
If printer entry still exist in registry, please delete that printer entry and re-install this printer again,
then check if this issue still exists. (Please backup registry entries before operating registry. It will help us to avoid unexpected issue.)
    àand now see
message Active Directory Domain Services is not available
By the way, would you please let me know where/when get this
Active Directory Domain Services is not available error message? Or provide a screenshot of it?
(Please hide all protected or private information) Please check if all services are running correctly on the computer. Meanwhile, please refer to following article and check if can help you.

  • How to install Small Business Server 2008 in an existing Active Directory domain

It is shown on this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884453, "How to install Small Business Server 2003 in an existing Active Directory domain".
Is it possible to do this with SBS2008 ?
If "YES", are there any published information about the procedure ?

Yes, it is. Thank you very much.
But there is something that confuses me - I want to migrate from Win2003Std to SBS2008. And also, I want to keep the existing Win2003Std as a second DC for a long time.
But it is written in the shown article:
... After the migration is finished, you must remove the Source Server from the network within 21 days. ...
Is this rule mandatory for the scenarios where the Source Server is Std, not SBS ? As I know, I can have more than one DC(Win2003Std/Win2008Std) together with SBS2003. But what about SBS2008 ?

  • Provision Search in SharePoint Foundation 2013 without Domain Controller / Active Directory - Domain accounts

    Hi,
I have successfully setup SharePoint Foundation 2013 as single server farm with SQL Server Standard database in a DMZ environment using local accounts since DMZ doesn't have an Active Directory and hence Domain accounts using powershell as described
    in https://theblobfarm.wordpress.com/2012/12/03/installing-sharepoint-2013-without-a-domain-controller
When I run Farm configuration wizard to provision search service application, I get an error:
ERROR: "The service application(s) for the service "Search Service Application" could not be provisioned because of the following error: I/O error occurred."
The log file logged the details of this error as:
ERROR: "Failed to create file share Analytics_e441aa1c-1a8d-4f0a-a079-58b499eb4c50 at D:\SharePoint Search\Office Server\Analytics_e441aa1c-1a8d-4f0a-a079-58b499eb4c50 (System.ArgumentException: The SDDL string contains an invalid sid or a sid
    that cannot be translated."
After investigation, I found that potentially the error could be because the timer service is trying to setup a network share for analytics component (as part of provisioning search). It is trying to setup that share with a domain account that happens to
be a local user instead in this case and fails with error “System.ArgumentException: The SDDL string contains an invalid sid or a sid that cannot be translated”.
I got some pointer from the below thread
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c8e93984-f4e5-46da-8e8a-c5c79ea1ff62/error-creating-search-service-application-on-sharepoint-foundation-with-local-account?forum=sharepointadmin
However, the above thread doesn't state that the solution worked.
I have tried creating share manually for Analytics_<Guid> folder but it doesn't work since every time farm configuration wizards is run it creates a new Analytics_<Guid> folder.
Since, I have setup SharePoint Foundation 2013 on a production environment I cannot test and trial various solutions.
Can some please guide me on how to successfully provision search for SharePoint Foundation 2013 setup as a single server farm with SQL Server Standard database in a DMZ environment using local accounts (without Active Directory - domain accounts).
    Thanks in advance.
    Himanshu

Microsoft documentation doesn't always specifically call out all products (Project Server isn't there, either). But it does apply. You'll need to stand up at least one Domain Controller, or allow port access back to a DC.
Preferably, set up SharePoint on the internal network and use a reverse proxy (which will terminate client connections at the reverse proxy) present in the DMZ.
