DNS changes in latest server update?

OK, this is a weird one. My server, neko.com, ran some Apple updates last night and rebooted. This morning "neko.com" wouldn't resolve, and I saw a bunch of "lame" errors in the DNS log. (Yes, one of the authoritative DNS servers for "neko.com" is "ns2.neko.com"-- the same computer).
Odd. That would imply that neko.com no longer thinks it's its own authoritative server.
So I fire up Server Admin, click DNS, and look at the settings...and they're all gone-- just the default 127.0.0.1 stuff is present. I even went into the named directory and looked at the files manually. Yep, just the default stuff.
Fortunately, I have Retrospect, so I was able to restore the original data.
What the **** caused this? I'm certainly not going to apply the update again!

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the service setings pull-off in the bottom right of a Service's settings pane. The resultant file is a "plist" and can be used to restore settings for some services.
If you didn't create one there's no way to do so rectroactively.
The Apple-generated BIND files are at
/private/var/named/zones/db.*.zone.apple
so you'd need a backup of those that you can restore.

  • DNS munted after latest screwety update

    Kia ora,
After the latest security update, on reboot, all my services that pointed to the server name rather than the ip address are broken. I can use ical if i reconfigured the accounts to connect using the server ip address but not the name.
Wiki broken as well, the old error 210 in the calendar has reappeared, Advice appreciated
    thanks

    Kia ora Jeff,
    Thanks, here it is
    Primary address = 192.168.1.8
    Current HostName = MYServer.myserver.com
    DNS HostName =MYServer.myserver.com
The names match. There is nothing to change.
    I have tried
    host 192.168.1.8
    and it resolves to MYServer.myserver.com,
    but
    host MYServer.myserver.com gives an error

  • DNS Changes (Mountain Lion Server & Airport Extreme)

I'm using a Mac Mini Mountain Lion Server with a Airport Extreme Router. The router is currently providing the DHCP funtion. Is it possible to change the DHCP settings on the router to use the DNS server on the Mac Mini Server rather than the one in the router.
I can't see any setting on either the Airport Utility or the Server App I was wondering if the DNS Server setting could be change via the comand line.
    Many Thanks
    Darren

    Hi Darren,
Have you tried putting your Airport Extreme into Bridge Mode? That should enable you to use the DHCP service on your server.
    Regards Alan

  • Latest Server Update CAN'T COPY TO SERVER FOLDERS Error Code -36

I've recently upgraded to the latest OS on my Mac Mini Server...which required an upgrade to the latest Mac Server. I have to say that it's been nothing but frustrations.
Of all of them, one of the most lingering is issues with copying files to the server from a user's desktop Mac. Namely, mine, the administrator with open permissions as wide as they allow.
Every time I drag a file over I get this:
That's when I copy one file. Now, the copy fully works but this happens regardless.
Worse, when I copy over multiple files I get this error as well and only the top file in the copy-from folder gets successfully copied. In short, I have no way to copy over multiple files. It's requiring me to drag each one and then clear out the error message, which frankly is not possible given I often need to copy hundreds of files from desktop to server.
    PLEASE, some one help.
    Best,
    Seth
P.S. Some of the other issues in the "upgrade" to this server have been complete folders providing very different folder content and permissions. I've had to complete remove share points on the server and drag over all content and share the new location. I've also had to delete and rebuild users and groups for the entire server. What a waste of time.

  • I just downloaded the latest itunes update 11.1 and now I get an error messages saying "The item 'iTunes.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly."

I just downloaded the latest itunes update 11.1 for windows 7 and now when I try to open itunes with the shortcut on my desktop I get this error message: "The item 'itunes.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly."  I can't open itunes at all.  Is there anything I can do or is there a problem with the new update?

    Start > Programs = Firefox
    Does that shortcut work?
If so, delete the current shortcut that is in the Quick Start tray and drag the one that is in Start > Programs down there.

  • In the latest iOS updates, did Apple change the way Airplay communicate with other devices through Wifi?

    Short :
In the latest iOS updates, did Apple change the way Airplay communicate with other devices through Wifi?
    Detailed:
We had a glitch with our Apple TV 3A 3-4 weeks ago and had to factory reset it (we reconfigured it with the exact same configuration than before the crash), it's now running iOS 7.0.2, I can't saw which version it ran before the problem though.
It's used in a business environment with 30+ iPads 2, half of them are updated to 8.1.1 and the other half to 8.1.2. We use the latest iTunes version.
Before the glitch that required a reset, all the iPads were detecting and mirroring when needed to the Apple TV, but now the iPads don't see the Apple TV in their list of Airplay devices anymore (but they detect various other devices inside our network).
I have to add that our Apple TV is able to navigate the movie store correctly, so I assume that it's not an internet restriction issue from our end (also, the APple TV do not see either any of the many iPads on its device-detection screen.
We successfully connected an iPhone 5S and an iPhone 6 through P2P Airplay, so it's not the issue, but when we connected the iPhones to our Wifi network (Same as all the other devices are using) the Apple TV suddenly disappeared from the choices.
Hence the reason why I inquire to the possibility that some changes were made in one of the latest iOS revisions, if so, we would require some details so we can adjust our Wifi configuration accordingly to allow the proper detection of devices.
P.S. I tried the basic troubleshooting of Airplay problems with no avail. Airplay button is displaying on the control panel, Airplay do not show the Apple TV at all (so it's not either the trick to display the Mirroring button), we also already proceeded to the suggested devices reboots, so my issue is quite more complex I believe.
    Thanks in advance.

I Have the same issue on a brand new iPad mini 2. My battery is only lasting up to 5 hours. I went on chat with Apple last night and they said my battery is fine and its a Safari issue. I'm literally losing 1% every 3-4 minutes. I tried recalibrating my battery, signing out of iCloud, shutting off all locations, turning off background app refresh, restoring network settings, restoring all, and finally restoring from iTunes with no luck. This is just awful. I got this iPad so I could use it on my long flight for a trip I have coming up, and unfortunately, it's not going to last that long, plus I'm concerned about how many times i will be recharging my battery because of this since battery's do have a life cycle dependent on the number of charges. This is frustrating and needs to be fixed ASAP and addressed by Apple.
By the way, Apple told me to bring my device to the Apple Store because it's still under warranty. That's great and all, but I'm going to waste my time if there is no fix for this issue.
Ok so you want Apple to address the problem, but yet you don't want to take it to them just in case they can't fix it? What if they can fix it? Complaining here certainly won't fix it.

  • DNS url changes to with server name URL

We have created  dns url for our sharepoint site, but users click on some links urls get changed to with server name URL
    Like http:\\server1:81\main\
and i have created new subsite and all the pages comeu p with server name url instead on DNS URL
Can someone help me with this?
    Thanks,

Make sure the new DNS URL is in the Default Zone for AAMs. Also make sure none of your content is using hard-coded paths, instead using relative paths.

I have a MacBook Air with a US keyboard layout.  (I think - I live in NZ)
I agreed to automatically install the latest OS updates.  Ever since then the keyboard layout for some characters has changed.
For example Shift-2 used to produce an @ symbol - now it produces a ".  I now get the @ symbol when I press the key labelled [.
Please help - this is driving me nuts!
This started today as a result of the latest software update!

Since latest software update, my sound settings are changing sometimes when I turn on and cannot hear anything. All controls are useless and cannot be activated. After changing several things, I have been able to make it work, but today nothing is working. Anyone else experience this  and have any ideas?

    Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

Has anybody got a solution ?
I tried to repair autorizations with Onyx and Disk Utility, and it goes fine, but next morning, back in trouble ...
How can in unsinstall this security update which seems to be the source of this mayhem ?
Thankssss a lot, gentlemen and ladies
    Mike

    Welcome to the Discussions,
Only one idea, go to Nortons Site and download the UnInstaller,
Norton has shown itself to be Unhappy Camper with anything MAC.

  • DNS changes to .local

    Hu Guys,
I have a Standard server that is playing up. It keeps changing from its proper DNS name to .local
It is running all latest SW updates.
    I have run sudo hostname
But every restart it keeps defaulting back to the .local
    Any ideas?
    Cheers.

Using the ISP DNS, when I dig the DNS hostname it shows up the router.
I'm not entirely certain how to interpret that; I'm going to make several assumptions here.
If a dig of the host name for the intended host gets the address of the router, then that's an indication that DNS isn't configured correctly, or that there's something funky about the network.
I'm going to guess there's ISP DNS here, and potentially NAT. I'd ask that a few more details of the configuration be included, both around the current network configuration and NAT and addressing and DNS, and around what dig showed for the results.

  • Finder slow after latest Apple update

I allowed this latest apple update to install this morning and since I did, every folder I open is empty and takes forever to load its files.  Once they have loaded they work as normal unless they are sub-folders in which case it's back to the beach ball for a while.
I have repaired permissions and done disk repair and re-booted several times.  Activity monitor shows nothing unusual and in fact very little activity while the folder contents load.
Has anyone else experienced this after the latest update?

Linc, Sorry to bother you again, but this problem is on-going.  This morning I decided to use the recovery system and re-installed Mavericks because Spotlight was not responding.  I even after asked it to re-index my drive (removed/replaced drive in privacy setting of spotlight) but nothing happened.
Now, since the new install at least Spotlight has re-indexed, but Finder is again very very slow and Activity monitor shows Finder constantly being un-responsive.  I re-launch finder and all is good until I click on a folder somwhere and back comes the beach-ball.
Below id the log since the reboot after re-install.  I do hope it's not too big, and that it tells you whats wrong.
    Cheers,
    Ray

  • DNS Issues - Can ping server name and IPs but not FQDNs.

    Hi All,
Hopefully some one can help me here, I am having an issue where one of my domain attached servers cannot ping any FQDNs in the environment but it can ping the host names and the IPs and look up the host names from a reverse look up.
We have done the following troubleshooting:
    Flushed and registered DNS cache.
Restarted the DNS client and net logon services on the effected server
Preformed standard checks and commands such as:
Checked the event logs and found there were warnings for DNS registration.
Compared the DNS settings in the network adapters across the rest of the servers in the environment and found that they were all the same. DNS Suffixes are added in the correct order and are set to register.
Pinging FQDNs which is not giving any results.
Tracert FQDNs which is also not giving any results.
Nslookup which is querying the DNS server directly and giving results as expected
Ran the command which reported successful: dcdiag /test:registerindns /dnsdomain:sub.domain.net /v
Checked and updated the permissions on DNS for the affected server to give the server full control of its own DNS entry.
Replaced the DNS Client service DLL with one from a server that is working as expected.
Also worth noting is that the affected server (as well as every other server in the environment) has 2 NICs, one that communicates with DNS and AD and the other does not have any DNS IPs set.
Not this is not the first time this happened, a reboot fixed the issue before but it seems to be a reoccurring problem now.
If any one can shed some light on this issue I would be grateful.
    Regards,
    Steve.

    Hi Steve,
First, we should confirm if this issue is caused by DNS.
When you ping the FQDN, does the server show the correct corresponding IP address?
If no, there should be some error messages. If it is possible, please post the screenshot of this issue.
To check the process about how does server resolve the FQDN, please follow the steps below:
clear local DNS cache with command ipconfig /flushdns
    perform the network capture
    ping the specified FQDN
    Check the DNS traffic
To download Network Monitor, please click the link below:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-hk/download/details.aspx?id=4865
Besides, have you tried to update the NIC driver to the latest version?
    Best Regards.

  • Can't delete primary zone in DNS after moving the server

    Woe is me!
Our MacMini was hosted at a Colo site and working fine. No firewall in front of the machine, so we turned on the server firewall and only allowed mail, web, ftp, and a couple of other services. This worked great using our external public DNS wired to our domain names and public fixed IP address. Later, we got VPN up a running (the trick was to create a second, local IP address for the ethernet port), but this also required us to turn on the server's DNS to create a split-brained DNS server.
Everything was working swimmingly... and then we had a hard drive crash. Since we were thinking about moving the server onsite anyway (our POS system was accessed through the VPN, but it could be slow and made our tasting room dependent on Internet access in order to run the POS), we ordered Comcast business class internet with a fixed IP address.
We updated the external public DNS to the new public fixed ip. Rather than plug the mini directly to the Comcast router (which is in pass-through mode), we elected to put a AirPort Extreme in front of it, mainly so we could get all of the POS computers on the same local network without using the mini as a DHCP/NAT router. We created a DHCP reservation on the Extreme so that the mini had a fixed local IP address. We port forwarded everything we wanted to expose to the Internet. Email started to work again. However, web services and VPN are nada.
This being Snow Leopard Server and having spent literally hours debugging DNS issues when we first got the server, I knew it wouldn't be straightforward. And it hasn't been. Even changing the IP address of the server has been a chore.
We ran "sudo changeip <old IP address> <new IP address>".
Then we ran "sudo changeip -checkhostname" and received:
    "$ sudo changeip -checkhostname
    Primary address     = 10.0.8.2 <new static internal IP address>
    Current HostName    = <servername>.<domainname>.com
The DNS hostname is not available, please repair DNS and re-run this tool.
    dirserv:success = "success""
Oh no, the black pit of death.
Even though I tried to modify the machine record in the local DNS to reflect the new internal static IP address, Nada.
So, looking back on my previous research from Mr Hoffman and others, I stopped the DNS service, and I deleted the primary zone and reverse lookups in order to rebuild them from scratch. Except that no matter what I do, I can't delete the primary zone - it comes back like Dracula (even though the reverse zone and all of the zone records are gone). I tried rebuilding everything using the undeletable zone, but after a few services (saved each one separately), they would suddenly disappear.
I am leery of messing with the DNS files on the server as I don't want to hose up Server Admin (my command line skills are rudimentary and slow). I have so much installed on the machine now that I am concerned about someone saying "reinstall".
    Help!
Related to this is that it is not clear to me in web services which IP address you should use for the sites. The internal IP? The public IP? I thought Apache cared about the external IP address. And I think Apache is hosed at the moment due to my DNS troubles anyway.
    Thanks in advance!

    Morris Zwick wrote:
And does anyone know which IP you enter for your sites in the web service? The public static IP or the internal private static IP?
For the external DNS server I am sure you have already deduced that it should be the static IP issued you by Comcast and this will be forwarded by your router to your server.
For your internal DNS server you could use either the internal LAN IP, or the external IP although the later might be affected by your firewall so this you will need to test.
For the Web Server service in Server admin, if your only running a single website you could avoid the issue by just using the wildcard entry which will respond to any IP address, so this would be an empty host name and an IP address of *
In fact you don't have to specify an IP address you could just use the hostname, so it will listen to traffic arriving at your server addressed to any IP address and as long as the URL that was requested includes the hostname you define for the site it will get responded to. So if as an example you have two websites you want to serve
    www.example.com
    site2.example.com
then as long as both have the IP address for the site as an * (asterisk) then both should work as separate sites for traffic addressed to either the LAN or WAN IP address of the server.
You will still need to use two IP addresses on the server to enable VPN, you could use a USB Ethernet adapter for the second one. Port forwarding for VPN is not as simple as other traffic as VPN requires traffic different to the standard IP and UDP packets. Routers that support 'VPN Passthrough' are specifically designed to accomodate this but I don't know if the AirPort Extreme does this. I have also found PPTP copes better with this sort of setup than L2TP although PPTP is generally regarded as less secure.
