DNS -- DHCP vs Client Settings

Does setting DNS Server and a Search Domain in System Preferences>>Network on a client machine override the settings set via the DHCP service on the server?
The clients are set to DHCP and the main AD authentication server is down and they're not going on to find the backup servers.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Yes it does.

  • Communication between the DNS/DHCP Manager and OES Server

No communication between the DNS/DHCP Manager Console and OES server (status, start, stop)
The screenshot shows the tab "DHCP (OES Linux)" in the DNS / DHCP Manager console
in the bottom of the image it shows the state of the DHCP servers.
    allDHCP.JPG
The dhcp service is started on all these servers
You can see that the status is known only for four servers.
The button "start/stop DHCP service" works fine on this servers and
the dhcp service can be canceled and also restarted
But the status of the "dhcp service" is not recognized for all the other DHCP servers
and so we can not start or stop dhcp service on these servers.
All servers were installed at different times (last three years) with OES11 and
are upgraded to OES11SP2 with all patches.
The server keto (DHCP_keto) is a new installation OES11SP2 few days ago.
All OES servers were set up identically from me. LDAP, LUM, DMS, DHCP works fine.
Which service on the OES server is responsible for
communication (status indicator) between the DNS/DHCP Manager and the OES serve?
How the status query is performed by the DNS/DHCP Manager?
How can I test the communication to the server on the client (console)?
Which configurationfiles I should be compare on the server?
    Thanks in advance

  • Single server as Soft AP, DC, DNS, DHCP for a small office

The server is running 2012 R2 Foundation with a wired network for internet (Comcast). It has a WiFi adapter so it can host a wireless network (as a Soft AP). The WiFi host has a static IP 1.1.1.1.
On the server I have setup AD, DNS, and DHCP services (all bind to that static IP).
All clients need to connect server and internet via WiFi, and join the domain for work.
But it looks like the DHCP/DNS services don't like the virtual adapter - although all clients can connect, they cannot get their IP.
Without AD/DNS/DHCP I can share internet connection with ICS perfectly, so I think the hosted WiFi network is setup correctly.
I tried to remove the DHCP service, and use ICS to assign IP - it works, but clients cannot see the DNS server and thus cannot join AD.
What am I missing? Thanks for your help!

It is never a good idea to run a DC with two NICS. It causes all sorts of problems. (The only exception was SBS server which was designed as a one-box solution). Also, a domain will not run behind ICS. If you are running a domain, the domain clients
must use the local DNS (on the DC) for DNS, not the DNS relay system of ICS. RRAS/NAT will work because you can configure it so that it does not run its own DHCP function. ICS is not configurable.
Even if you overcome that problem, you still have the multihomed DC problem. It really isn't worth the effort to save a few bucks.

  • "package" ARD and VNC client settings?

    Hi-
I work in a school, and manage @ 1,100 student iBooks. I'm trying to figure out how to create a package that performs the same functions as the "Change Client Settings" feature under the "Manage" Menu. We use external HD's to reimage the computers, and add packages to this HD that are installed post flight. Right now I have to do the reimaging, then use the "Change Client Settings Feature" seperately, then finally run a package that pushes out the VNC password, (com.apple.VNCSettings.txt) that is in the /Library/Preferences folder.
We set up the computers so VNC is enabled, and the teacher account on the machine can use ARD.
Any thoughts, ideas, or it can't be done's would be great.
    Thanks!
    Jim
    Mostly iBook G4's and G'3's Mac OS X (10.4.7) I use a MacMini w/ ARD 3.1 Admin

I have found that reverse DNS entries, especially when they are wrong, can really mess things up. If you haven't already, in your ARD scanner windows, right-click and add the "DNS Name" column, and adjust the columns so you can see it. Whenever you have problems connecting in ARD, that's always a quick thing you can check. If the DNS name does not match your computer name, you'll have problems.
I don't think you gave enough detail of what is and isn't working, but in general, you can try connecting both with dns names and IP addresses, and connecting to Macs sometimes works better by putting their name as macname.local instead of macname.yourdomain.com.
If you try to connect with VNC via IP address, and the IP addresses on your servers are static (should be), and it doesn't work, it very likely could be a firewall setting. Even if you have the firewall off or ports open, you'll want to run a port scan against the server in question to test what truly is open.
This is all general stuff. Post something more specific if none of this helps (detail of OS versions, programs used, ports set open, any error messages, etc).
    Good luck

  • Managing DNS-DHCP from Windows 7

I had the DNS-DHCP Manager installed on my WinXP machine, but now I am running Win 7 (64bit) and I need to make changes to my DHCP range. I am moving the server behind a firewall which will use internal IPs and no longer be using a public range. I need to configure the DHCP server to serve out the internal IP addresses and stop using my public IP range.
I found the range and DHCP settings in iManager, but don't see a way to change them. I know it's possible using the manager utility, but I can't load it.
So is there a version that works with Win 7 (vista) or what is the best way to accomplish what I need to do?
    Mike

Thank you for the info, I have the txt file now and it looks like I have to manually change all of the 40 IP addresses I have in the range, correct? Each one has it's own entry (I did notice that several are skipped). My range starts from .210 and goes to .254, however in the txt file I exported .212, .219, .223, .225, .234, .236, .244, .247, .248, .250, .251, .252, .253, .254 are all missing in the range. Not sure why???
So if I am going to use internal IP addresses such as 192.168.0.11 - 192.168.0.50 I will just manually configure all 40 addresses in this file, correct?

  • OES2 SP3 DNS/DHCP Console

Just a quick note that currently, the latest DNS/DHCP Console isn't
available for download on Novell's site. You have to get it off of your
    OES2 SP3 server instead.
    http://servername/welcome/client-software.html
Then you can follow TID 7006450 to configure it so you can view leases.

If you do not have the novell-dnsdhcp-javaconsole RPM installed but do
have access to the OES2 SP3 media (and don't want to install DNS/DHCP on
a server just to get the latest JavaConsole) then on a Linux box you can
    extract the latest code via:
    rpm2cpio /path/to/novell-dnsdhcp-javaconsole-2.0.1-0.33.<arch>.rpm |
    cpio -idmv
    (where <arch> is i586 or x86_64 depending on 32- or 64-bit - note same
    files included in both)
You can then take the relevant DNSDHCP_SA.zip file and use it to install
the JavaConsole on your admin workstation(s).

  • New hardware - revisiting dns/dhcp on small network

I'm trying to replace a failed SMC wireless router with a new Airport Extreme Base Station on our small network.
The network consists of OSX Server 10.4.x running on a G4, 6 wired client machines, and the occassional wireless client. Things were working fine with the old router, but web activity was sluggish, which I blamed on the router (but now suspect was due to my dns config). The router's wireless function broke, thus the effort to replace with Airport.
When things were working, I had the router dishing out ip addresses via dhcp, OSX Server was running DNS for its internal needs and to resolve for a few of our services that are hosted elsewhere.
The server machine was manually configured to look to the wireless router for routing , and look to itself for DNS. DNS could properly lookup and reverse lookup the server name from all machines.
Clients were configured to pick up ip addresses via dhcp, and dns from the server.
This worked, albeit web surfing was sluggish.
I had assumed dns requests were going through the OSX Server machine, which would in turn send them via the router address to my isp's dns (assuming its not one of the few records in my internal dns).
What I am suspecting now is that the client machines, when my server dns could not resolve a domain name, would turn directly to the isp's dns. I guess the dhcp would have supplied this info??? In other words, the OSX Server dns was not looking outside itself to resolve a name for which it didn't have a record.
Anyway - I feel like my problem lies somewhere in the server's dns. Question: How that the OSX Server dns resolve a request for which it does not have a record? Does it need an entry for an external dns it can forward the request to? Or does the ip address in the Network config's "Router" field cover that?
    Many thanks.

As you are using "advanced services" in the server you should use only the server (internal private IP) DNS on your server LAN. Don't use any public DNS as they don't know your LAN private IP machines names or domainname.
The DHCP server in OS X should be setup to send out only the server IP for DNS to LAN clients and using the server DHCP it's possible to send LDAP info to clients too (you don't have to manually set directory services on each client to find your server).
In 10.5 Apple has provided the possibility of settig up DNS forwarders in the DNS GUI, in previous versions you have to enter them in /etc/named.conf "by hand" using the terminal (pico/nano).
Forwarders (usually your ISP DNS IPs) speed up dns lookups.
As it sounds like you are reusing your public domainname internally you seem to already have setup you public IP services too. This is neccessary for LAN clients to be able to find them as any domains configured in your local DNS will make the DNS server think it's the SOA (?) for those domains and it will not try to forward any requests/lookups for those to any external public DNS (DNS root servers or ISP DNS/forwarders).
If you have another static IP machine/server on your LAN you can make it a slave DNS so LAN clients can get at Internet if your server is temporarily down.

  • DNS/DHCP Managment Console- IP Addresses not releasing

    Hello,
I have added a new subnet on our network so we can add more wireless devices (iPads, Cellphones, etc. are all now needing IP addresses)
Everything is working fine except that the addresses are not releasing after 3 days. If someone with a Laptop comes into our building with a cell phone or laptop they are picking up an IP address automatically. Then once they leave (and the 3 day lease time expires) DNS/DHCP is not making that address available for another device.
Now we are quickly running out of local IP addresses on this new subnet. How can I get DNS/DHCP management console to hand out previously used expired IP addresses to new devices?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello,
No we haven't run out yet so that my very well be the case.
We do have two subnets in the same building .30 subnet and .32 subnet
They both work, and any client can pickup an IP on either subnet.
The .30 subnet was the old one and the .32 subnet has just been created. Now all new clients pickup an address on the .32 subnet.
Is there any way to figure out why all the clients want to pull a .32 address now?
    Thanks

  • DNS/DHCP app no longer sees DNS/DHCP server.

When I moved the majority of my Netware 6 servers to OES-NW last year, I started using iManager to handle admin duties for DNS and DHCP.
With a planned move to OES-L coming up, I tried accessing both services using the DNS/DHCP java console.
While I am able to log into that console, I am unable to see my DNS/DHCP server or any of the expected components for either service (DHCP pools, zone records, etc...).
I have tried both the console that is installable from the server and the newer LDAP-based version.
I have tried both 32 and 64-bit versions on XP and Windows 7, respectively.
Since I want to move those services to OES/Linux and the java console is the only mechanism that can administrate the services on that platform, I am perplexed.
My needs are simple, and I could easily move those duties to a SUSE server or even a Windows server, but that is not my preference.
Any ideas on where to begin troubleshooting are welcome.

You have more than one DNS-DHCP locator object in your tree, and the
console is picking up a/the empty one. Find the proper object (look at
the other tab in consoleone or imanager to see if it's connected with
servers zones and the like), and delete the superflouos ones.
This is an *extremely* common problem when OES gets introduced into a
tree, as it by default creates new locator objects in the server
container, if it's not configured otherwise.

    Hi,
I have a Default Client Settings and a Custom Device Client Settings.
Custom Device Client Settings is deployed only to a collection named "test" and default client setting is not deployed to any collections at all. I enabled hardware inventory in Custom Device Client Settings to see some reports regarding installed

Correct. Default Client Settings are by default applied to clients.

  • Client Settings Sharing the Same Priority

I have a dozen Client Settings and noticed that two of my Client Settings share the same priority (Priority 5) and one of them skips two priorities (10 & 11), see screenshot.  Increasing or decreasing the priority
on these dose not seem to reset the priority number, i.e. if I decrease #9 it moves to #12 and #12 to #9 and the same if I increase #12.  I was hoping increaseing #12 would reset it to #11 but that's not the case.   The same goes for the two #5's,
they stay no mater what I do.
Anyone seen this?  Any thoughts? I do not know if it is effecting anything and the 9/12 ones don't consern me as much as the two 5's do.  I'm not sure which #5 has more priority then the other.
