DNS Host pointing to an IP address of a host added to the domain

Hello
I have a server already joined to the domain, I need to migrate a file server, I want this file server host name to point to the actual server that is already joined to the domain. For some reason my company decided to create a host instead of using a DNS
Alias (CNAME),
Look like it is working fine, I can connect to the shares.
ServerA -> File server to migrate
ServerB -> Server to host the ServerA shares
But on some cases looks like authentication is failing for some applications,
Do you know if there is a Kerberos limitation? I am not sure if I should set a spn

Hi,
Could you share the error message with us?
I don’t think DNS CNAME record cause the problem as long as you have configured it properly.
In the meantime, you can do some troubleshoot the issue according to the articles.

  • DNS server pointing to MobilMe ip address

I have a site that I have built with iWeb posed to my MobileMe. I have since purchased a domain name. I need to know how to find my MobileMe web sites ip address so the the DNS server can pint to my site. How can I find my sites ip address?

You don't need any ip address at all.
To forward your new domain name to your website, you firstly need to enter your domain name into the personal domain name section of your MobileMe account.
After you have done this, go to the DNS settings at your domain name registrar and cancel the settings that are there and set up a new CNAME forward to that your domain name forwards to web.me.com.
Should be something like @ (this stands for your domain name) , CNAME, web.me.com and www (this stands for your sub-domain name), CNAME, web.me.com.
This is all you need - no ip addresses or anything like this - simply web.me.com and that is it.

  • SSRS 2008 r2 - the Report Manager won't load unless "/Reports" is added to the DNS entry in address bar

    Need some direction, please.
We are moving off  SSRS 2005 to a new server with SSRS 2008R2. The old installation (2005) a DNS entry was created "reports" with the ip address and port number simple. In the Configuration manager the Report Manager Virtual Directory
is "Reports". Website is Default web site. Typing "reports" into the address bar opens up report manager. When this is done the address shows as reports/reports/pages/folder etc.
The new installation is configured the same(?). DNS entry "reports2" with new ip address and port number. In the Configuration manager the Report manager URL virtual directory is "Reports" URLs: =
http://servername:port/Reports. The issue is when typing "Reports2" into the address bar the report manager won't open unless "reports" is added to the dns name i.e. http://reports2/reports
    is entered.
This thread took me to more like kind thread than my searches. Went into IIS in the default web site I added an htm file with a redirect. Then started it, it works. Maybe due to my inexperience but seems counter intuitive as I thought Reporting Services did
away with any reliance on IIS.

    Hi Urquhart,
According to your description, if you type "Reports2" in the browser, then you want to redirect to the report manager homepage in SSRS 2008 R2, right?
In Reporting Services 2008 R2, it uses HTTP.SYS for HTTP access and it’s independent of Internet Information Server(IIS). The role for HTTP.sys in Reporting Services is that, HTTP.sys receive the user's request, and then send it to report server. Report
Server handle the request(e.g. authenticate the users), and then use HTTP.sys the send HTTP responses again. In a word, HTTP.sys is just a driver, which allow us to communicate the clients(browser) with Report Server without Microsoft Internet Information
    Server(IIS).
So, since HTTP.SYS doesn’t provide URL redirection function, we are not able to redirect "Reports2" to report manager homepage by default. If we want to use redirect function, we should add a .html file in IIS to redirect the user to the report
    manager.

  • Externally Hosted DNS - How do I set up my 2003 DNS server for sub domain to point to internal IP address??

I have a domain name(domain.com) DNS hosted at my ISP. I also have 3 sub domains DNS hosted at the same ISP pointing to various external ip addresses (mail.domain.com, vpn.domain.com and ts.domain.com). We want to set up sales.domain.com to point to an
internal 10. IP address. We have AD integrated DNS servers for our 2003 AD domain. The AD domain name is totally different than the hosted domain name in question. I currently edit the host file for a couple of PC's but this isnt practical company wide so
I want to add entries on our internal AD DNS servers to resolve the locally hosted site. If i recall, someone once told me that you cannot just put an A record for one sub domain, I would have to have entries on my 2003 DNS server to resolve anything related
to the domain.com name. Is this accurate? If so, what is the proper way to configure my 2003 AD DNS server to resolve anything domain.com related for my internal users while still allowing my ISP to do the DNS lookup for the internet.

On my 2003 AD integrated DNS server...i rightclick forward lookup zone and choose...new zone..primary zone (store zone in AD checkbox checked)..i chose to all DNS servers in the AD domain for replication...zone name sales.domain.com....allow secure updates
option....then i added an A record in that zone...sales.domain.com..pointed that towards my internal 10. IP address...is this correct? It seems to be working correctly for the sales.domain.com DNS record...and i tested the other sub domains...and those look
like they are going to my ISP for DNS resolution...
Is this the correct procedure? I did this on a test AD domain and not my production...i want to make sure i dont break everything under the domain.com by incorrectly adding 1 sub domain..

  • Point to Static IP address

When I am entering the IP address during the initial setup in Standard Setup do I point it to my static IP address 78.105.171.155 or to the one I set up on my router 192.168.1.69
Because currently it points to 192.168.1.69 and it thinks my DNS name is Bunnymen.config, if I point it to my static one 78.105.171.155 which is pointed to my website address by the name host and RDNS by the internet service provider will it give me a DNS name of Bunnymen.com?

You need to setup whatever IP address your machine will have when it's running.
Ignore completely, for the moment, any NAT address that external users would use to get to your server (via port forwarding in your router). The server knows nothing (and doesn't need to know anything) about that address at this point.
Therefore, if you've setup your router to use port forwarding to forward connections to 192.168.1.69 (which is what I think you're saying), that is the address you configure the server with.

  • Old dns host name still showing!

I setup a new OSX 10.6 server and the dns name that i choose at the installation setup wizard was server1.mydomain.com.
after the installation is done, i decided to get rid of this name and setup a new dns name.. so i picked up a server2.mydomain.com
dns is resolving fine when i host server2.mydomain.com i got the server ip address and when i host the server ip it resolves the dns name, and also when i run the command changeip -checkhostname
both names matches and it says nothing to change.
my only problem now is when I go to Push Notifications & under configures services box, I see the old dns name and right next to it "iCal".. how can i change that so it will just match the new dns name which is dns2.mydomain.com ??
So I went to the iCal service and there is a button to Remove the old dns name..i clicked on it and it asks me for username and password for server1.mydomain.com to stop delivering push calendar notifications and when I click on connect, it shows an error:
Server Cannot be found on the network, check that the server hostname you've provided is valid or try again later?
    Any idea or thoughts ?
    Thanks

Here's the full dump of settings for calendar:
    $ sudo serveradmin settings calendar
If you've got settings showing for your old host, shut off the calendar server, and then try resetting those references via serveradmin. (See +serveradmin help+ for details)
If that fails, I'd then start by pulling the notifications off in Server Admin and shutting off iCal Server, and re-adding calendar, and restarting, and re-adding the notifications.
Failing that, (ugh, not my preferred choice nor preferred suggestion) reinstall.

  • DHCP Reservation Sync and DNS Host record sync etc shown in IPAM GUI

    Hello all,
I am aware of the scripts in the TechNet script center to sync DHCP leases etc to IPAM, however my question is about something else -
If you highlight an IP address (IP address inventory->select an IP), You can see fields that say: "DHCP reservation sync", "DNS PTR record sync" and "DNS host record sync" as below:
I was curious as to what these are for. Is there some built-in sync functionality for these that I perhaps have not enabled? (Don't see such options any where..)
    thanks,
    -Ravi

    Hi  Ravi ,
The three columns tell us the information of the synchronization between IPAM server and DNS server (or DHCP server) .
Here is the detailed guide for using IPAM :
Using the IPAM Client Console :
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj878351.aspx#inventory
IPAM can sync DNS and DHCP records .
The IPAM database is separate from DHCP and DNS servers on our network ,and full synchronization of hosts and IP addresses between IPAM and managed DNS or DHCP servers does not occur automatically
unless we have configured automated tasks to perform this synchronization .
    For detailed information ,see
DNS and DHCP record synchronization chapter in the following link :
    Multi-server Management :
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj878329.aspx

  • DNS Host (A) Rec. is Static for new Domain Controller

I was just questioned by my boss on why there are Static Host (A) records for Domain Controllers since I started and not before.  The only conclusion that I can come up with is that they are new Server 2008 R2 systems.  We are about to do an IP
Renumber here at the Corporate Office and this is how it was found that there are these Host (A) records.
Can someone explain to me why they are static and not dynamic now?  I would also like to be pointed to some documentation so that I can present it to her if possible?

  • Delete the DNS delegations pointing to this server

    Good morning,
I'm getting ready to decommission my Windows Server 2008 R2 server and replace it with a Windows Server 2012 R2 (completely new hardware).  After I decommission my current DC I will reboot it, change its IP address and name and then reboot it again.
I am then going to give the new server the old IP and name of my old DC (so basically the name and IP address of the active DC will not change).  I'll then promote this server back into the domain.   Since the new DC in the end will have the
same IP and NAME as the old DC, should I uncheck the "Delete the DNS delegations pointing to this server" when I decommission the old DC since the new one would have the same name?  Thanks!

You can uncheck it and then promote it. Once done, make sure that the new DC is set under
Name Servers tab in your zones properties.

  • HomeHub is unable to resolve a DNS CNAME pointing ...

Just sent a technical compaint email off to BT to get an answer to this, but thought I would share here in case it helps anyone else.
    Problem:
My HomeHub 3 is unable to resolve DNS queries where the DNS has a CNAME pointing to my WAN address. BT's and other public DNS servers resolve correctly - so the problem is not with the DNS record.
    Background:
I have some devices at home which use DNS for name resolution. As a web developer, it is anoying that I have to use a different DNS name from inside my house to outside because of the above problem. It is also annoying that the only two workarounds I can think of are to a) buy a new (non-BT) router, or b) manually configure each device to not use the HomeHub for name resolution because BT have locked down the hub so I can't do it automatically.
    Reproduce steps:
    1) Set up a DNS record to point to your HH WAN address.
    2) Set up a second DNS record that ponts to the first with a CNAME.
    3) DNS queries to the first record succeed, queries to the second fail.
    4) Set up a DNS record to a different IP address (try adding 1 to your WAN address)
    5) Set up another CNAME to point to that address
    6) DNS queries to both addresses succeed because the CNAME doesn't point to your WAN address

For completeness - the reply from customer services:
First of all, thank you for your email. I can certainly understand that a problem like this can cause frustration and inconvenience and I’m very sorry.
At the BT Broadband Technical Helpdesk we can only help with an actual broadband fault. The scope of free technical support for your broadband is limited to the supply of a broadband connection to one computer with the Homehub at it's default settings.
I understand that you have specific setup requirements. I'm sorry that I'll be unable to help configure the Homehub the way you'd like it to work.
I'd recommend that you contact our Home IT Experts Service where one of my colleagues will be able to help you.

  • DNS Host Records Missing

    Hi,
We are having an issue where DNS Host records seem to be missing, a user logs on and they don't get their group policies. They can logon again and get their group policies. However the DNS Host record is still not created on the DNS Servers.
If we reboot the PC the DNS record is created. What is going on.
We have 2 DC's running DNS, and one of them runs DHCP.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that client does not registry record in DNS server when user logon. And the DNS record will be created after rebooting the client.
DNS updates can be sent for any of the following reasons or events:
    1. An IP address is added, removed, or modified in the TCP/IP properties configuration for any one of the installed network connections.
    2. An IP address lease changes or renews with the DHCP server any one of the installed network connections. For example, when the computer is started or if the
    ipconfig /renew command is used.
    3. The ipconfig /registerdns command is used to manually force a refresh of the client name registration in DNS.
    4. At startup time, when the computer is turned on.
    5. A member server is promoted to a domain controller.
A user logon behavior will not trigger DNS update/registry. You may Open CMD on client and type
ipconfig /registerdns command to manually force a refresh of the client name registration in DNS.
If I have any misunderstanding about your question, please correct.

    Eve Wang

  • DNS host records priority

    Hi,
We are using EPM (Enterprise Project Management) in our organization.
We have to provide access to it from three different subnets:
    Local
    Organization1
    Organization2
The DNS already added the host record for the local IP. Ex.: srvepm 192.168.0.1
Then we added two other host records for the other subnets.
    Ex.: srvepm 192.168.10.1
    and
    srvepm 192.168.20.1
We have an alias to that server: epm (that is related to the srvepm server)
It works fine. But, some machines in our organization keeps getting the other IP addresses from the DNS and this is making the service unavailable for those machines.
What I did is unchecking the "Register this connection's addresses under networking settings.
But when the server was rebooted the three host records were erased and it keeps shuffling it to the machines.
Anyone knows a way to fix this problem or how can I set priority on host records so it doesn't makes that anymore?
Hope I was able to show my problem correctly.

Since the app is not AD aware, it's using Netmask prioritization. Here's more on it below - and sorry for all the links. It's a heavy topic with lots of factors governing it. If the app was AD aware, then we would create AD Sites, and let AD handle it.

  • DNS Host(A) records disappear after a while

    Hi all,
a few weeks ago we started to change the TCP/IP configuration of our printers from "static" to DHCP with reservations. The DHCP server is configured to register forward Host(A) and reverse PTR record on DNS on behalf of (all) clients, both are W2K3 with SP2.
This works well for all our Toshiba printers/copiers and most of our HP printers. However, on a handful of HP printers the Host(A) record in the DNS zone get lost / disappeard after some time, leading into a non working name resolution. But only the Host(A) record, the reverse PTR record is still there. Currently we have this issue with  Business InkJet 2800 attached via a JetDirect J3258G to our network.
In the past we noticed, that on another printer the Host(A) record re-appears after some hours, only to disappear after a while again. These intervals last some hours up to one day, but seem to follow no period or schedule, like DHCP lease time, DNS scavening etc.
I have intentionally not "listed" all the technical details in this first post. However, if you need specific details I will be happy to share them.
Any hint or comment is appreciated
