DNS Host record of a computer is deleted after you change the DNS server assignment

Hi All,
This is a critical bug in Windows 7/Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2. Is there any way to get rid of it? I am planning for for a deployment with new DNS server IPs.
Thank you.

  • DNS host record

We recently successfully decommissioned a child domain. However, we have found a non-domain system which was referenced in the child domain DNS as a host record - xyz.child.root.com
Where can I add this host record in the root.com domain, so it can resolve to services contacting that name?  The child domain no longer exists.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
What does a non-domain system record mean?
    This host record seems
for a computer located in child domain. If this record is for a computer located in child domain, this record will not efficient.
To add a host record to root domain, you can create a new host record in the root domain and input the corresponding IP and record name for the new record.
Besides, after you decommissioned the child domain, you can run dcdiag /test:DNS to check the health of DNS.

    Erin

  • DNS Host Records Missing

    Hi,
We are having an issue where DNS Host records seem to be missing, a user logs on and they don't get their group policies. They can logon again and get their group policies. However the DNS Host record is still not created on the DNS Servers.
If we reboot the PC the DNS record is created. What is going on.
We have 2 DC's running DNS, and one of them runs DHCP.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that client does not registry record in DNS server when user logon. And the DNS record will be created after rebooting the client.
DNS updates can be sent for any of the following reasons or events:
    1. An IP address is added, removed, or modified in the TCP/IP properties configuration for any one of the installed network connections.
    2. An IP address lease changes or renews with the DHCP server any one of the installed network connections. For example, when the computer is started or if the
    ipconfig /renew command is used.
    3. The ipconfig /registerdns command is used to manually force a refresh of the client name registration in DNS.
    4. At startup time, when the computer is turned on.
    5. A member server is promoted to a domain controller.
A user logon behavior will not trigger DNS update/registry. You may Open CMD on client and type
ipconfig /registerdns command to manually force a refresh of the client name registration in DNS.
If I have any misunderstanding about your question, please correct.

    Eve Wang

  • DHCP Reservation Sync and DNS Host record sync etc shown in IPAM GUI

    Hello all,
I am aware of the scripts in the TechNet script center to sync DHCP leases etc to IPAM, however my question is about something else -
If you highlight an IP address (IP address inventory->select an IP), You can see fields that say: "DHCP reservation sync", "DNS PTR record sync" and "DNS host record sync" as below:
I was curious as to what these are for. Is there some built-in sync functionality for these that I perhaps have not enabled? (Don't see such options any where..)
    thanks,
    -Ravi

    Hi  Ravi ,
The three columns tell us the information of the synchronization between IPAM server and DNS server (or DHCP server) .
Here is the detailed guide for using IPAM :
Using the IPAM Client Console :
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj878351.aspx#inventory
IPAM can sync DNS and DHCP records .
The IPAM database is separate from DHCP and DNS servers on our network ,and full synchronization of hosts and IP addresses between IPAM and managed DNS or DHCP servers does not occur automatically
unless we have configured automated tasks to perform this synchronization .
    For detailed information ,see
DNS and DHCP record synchronization chapter in the following link :
    Multi-server Management :

  • DNS host records priority

    Hi,
We are using EPM (Enterprise Project Management) in our organization.
We have to provide access to it from three different subnets:
    Local
    Organization1
    Organization2
The DNS already added the host record for the local IP. Ex.: srvepm 192.168.0.1
Then we added two other host records for the other subnets.
    Ex.: srvepm 192.168.10.1
    and
    srvepm 192.168.20.1
We have an alias to that server: epm (that is related to the srvepm server)
It works fine. But, some machines in our organization keeps getting the other IP addresses from the DNS and this is making the service unavailable for those machines.
What I did is unchecking the "Register this connection's addresses under networking settings.
But when the server was rebooted the three host records were erased and it keeps shuffling it to the machines.
Anyone knows a way to fix this problem or how can I set priority on host records so it doesn't makes that anymore?
Hope I was able to show my problem correctly.

Since the app is not AD aware, it's using Netmask prioritization. Here's more on it below - and sorry for all the links. It's a heavy topic with lots of factors governing it. If the app was AD aware, then we would create AD Sites, and let AD handle it.

  • Deleted failed DC from the domain (Server 2012 R2) - Now after doing metadata and DNS cleanup, I can no longer promote a new DC to the domain

I work for a university and teach IT courses to undergrad and graduate students. The details below are pertaining an isolated lab environment
I had a storage failure in my lab and the DCs became corrupt. This is a university lab environment so there isn't anything crucial on here. I just would rather avoid rebuilding the domain/forest and would rather use this as a learning experience with my
    students...
So after the storage failed and was restored, the VMs hosted became corrupt. I did a NTDSUTIL to basically repair the NDTS.dit file but one of my DCs reverted to a state before DC promotion. Naturally, the domain still had this object in AD. After numerous
failed attempts at trying to reinstall the DC on the server through the server manager wizard in 2012 R2, I decided that a metadata cleanup of the old failed object was necessary.
Utilizing this article, I removed all references of the failed DC from both AD and DNS (http://www.petri.com/delete_failed_dcs_from_ad.htm)
So now that the failed object is removed completely from the domain and the metadata cleanup was successful, I then proceeded to re-install the necessary AD DS role on the server and re-promote to the existing domain. Pre-Requisites pass but generate some
warning around DNS Delgation, and Dynamic Updates (delegation is ignored because the lab is isolated from external comms, and dynamic updates are in fact enabled on both my _msdcs and root domain zones).
Upon the promotion process, I get the following error message (also worth mentioning - the account performing these operations is a member of DA, EA, and Schema Admins)
    The operation failed because:
Active Directory Domain Services could not create the NTDS Settings object for this Active Directory Domain Controller CN=NTDS Settings,CN=domainVMDC1,CN=Servers,CN=Default-
First-Site-Name,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=school,DC=edu on the remote AD DC domainVMDC2. Ensure the provided network credentials have sufficient permissions.
"While processing a change to the DNS Host Name for an object, the Service Principal Name values could not be kept in sync."
As you can see, this error seems odd considering. Now that I'm down to a single DC and DNS server, the sync should be corrected. I've run a repadmin /syncall and it completed successfully. Since then, I've run dcdiags and dumped those to a text as well and
    here are my results...

From what I can gather, there is a definite DNS issue but I don't have any stale records to the old DC stored anywhere. I've tried this with a new server as well and get similar errors...
At this rate I'm ready to rebuild the entire forest over again. I'm just reluctant to do so as I want to make this a learning experience for the students.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As you can see, there seems to be some errors. The one that I did correct was the one around the _msdcs NS record being unable to resolve. For whatever, reason the name wasn't resolving the IP but all other NS tabs and records were. Just that one _msdcs
sub-zone. Furthermore, the mentioning of any connections to root hint servers can be viewed as false positives. There is no external comms to this lab so no communication with outside IPs can be expected. Lastly, they mentioned a connectivity issue yet mention
that I should check the firewall settings. All three profiles are disabled in Windows Firewall (as they have been the entire time). Thank you in advance for your help!

  • Changeip command? Trying to view or change the DNS name of a computer.

Hey guys, I did a time machine on computer but it is still remembering the old DNS name.
I looked it up and it looks like you can use the changeip command to change the DNS name but when i try and run the command it says changeip command not found.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi
Apple have changed (sic) the changeip command. In 10.6 Server it now does not have the same functionality it used to have in previous versions. Reason being it was not always successful in doing what it was supposed to do. To change the hostname use scutil:
    sudo scutil --set HostName thenameyouwant
The changeip command does not exist on the client OS.

  • How do I change the DNS settings to BC but keep the MX setting for emails?

How do I change the DNS settings to Business Catalyst but keep the MX settings for emails?
I'm basically created anew site using Muse and want to host it on BC and upgraded to the Web basics + to allow for hosting of downloadable pdf's etc.
There are up to 50+ emails address set up on the current set up and I want to just change the NDS settings for the domain to ponit to the new site/hosting an not have to worry about them chaning all the meail settings etc.
Records do I need to change in BC?
    Thanks
    Iain

    Hi,
You shouldn't need to do anything as long as you do not state hosting email with BC.  Just ensure to check you DNS in a lookup tool that it's still referencing your external email service.
Otherwise you can set up external email set-up if the option is present.

  • My ipod works in itunes but does not appear in "my computer" after I changed the properties

My ipod works in itunes but does not appear in "my computer" after I changed the properties.
First off, I'm using Windows XP (and Mac SnowLeopard) Here's how it started. For some reason my ipod started showing up as a camera when I plugged it in. It works fine in itunes, though. But when I tried to access it from "my computer" it only
showed me the one and only picture I had on my ipod. I deleted that picture hoping it would no longer show up as a camera. When it still did I right-clicked on it in "my computer" and selected "properties". Under "autoplay" I
chose for it to 'not show up' or 'take no action' or some such deal when I plugged it in. I thought that would stop it from popping up the window that asks whether i want to 'open camera wizard' or 'open camera scanning' or 'open folder to view files' or 'take
no action' , etc. But now it won't show up in "my computer" at all. I also have a Mac with SnowLeopard. When I plugged my ipod into it my ipod doesn't show up in "finder" either! So basically my problem is not a mechanical one with hardware
or software; yht ipod still works fine in itunes. I just need to undo the change I made. I've searched all around my preferences, utilities, options, etc. It shows up on my "Device Manager" but not on "Disk Management".
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
To show up in Windows Explorer, you can try placing the iPod into
    disk mode.
    Moreover, i recommend you to
    restore ipod to factory settings.
If this issue still persists, locate to device manager, uninstall and reinstall USB Mass Storage Device driver.

    dave0915,
iTunes stores your iPhone backups in the Library folder in your Home folder.
iTunes places the backup files in these places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes

I can not view ANY videos on Vimeo, I have 'reset' the Ipad, original IOS 5, cleared the history and cookies, I haves changed the DNs number to 8.8.8.8, I have worked on this for 3 days now, HELP!!!!

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

    Hello,

    I have a Mac Book Pro 2009 and a Samsung 32" Class (31.5" Diag.) 450 Series 720p LCD HDTV (2010 model).
I am using a mini display port to VGA adapter. I have sucessfully hooked up boh devices but it stopped working after a handful of times. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to fix the problem or is my cable broken?

  • I can't connect to the itunes store and have some problems with other websites. Some websites load OK. I had the same problem on my iPad and changed the DNS, but don't want to do this on my iMac, anyway, surely I should have my router's DNS?

I can't connect to the iTunes store from my iMac and have problems loading a number of other websites, however some websites load perfectly well. I have had the iTunes store issue on my iPad and resolved it by changing the DNS but surely I should use the DNS for my router. I don't really want to change it for the iMac as I access secure sites with it to internet shop.
Any ideas, I was going to try loading Chrome but can't get it without going through the iTunes store. Anyway, that is treating the symprom not the cause.

Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
