DNS resolving issues

Hello.
I'm having a lot of issues when resolving DNS names on Linux.
I've 2 computers, one is running Windows XP SP2, the other is running Arch Linux. I connect to the internet using the Windows machine, and I have ICS turned on so I can connect through my linux box as well.
Whenever I connect to a host of any sort through the linux box, I often recieve "Unknown Host" messages. If I refresh several times then it works.
My linux box has dual boot with Windows XP SP2. If I use Windows on this machine, I'm having no DNS issues at all.
So I believe the problem is with the way my Arch is configured.
This is the relevant part from my /etc/rc.conf:
lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
#eth0="dhcp"
eth0="eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
# Routes to start at boot-up (in this order)
# Declare each route then list in ROUTES
# - prefix an entry in ROUTES with a ! to disable it
gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
ROUTES=(gateway)
Can anyone help me rid of this annoying problem?

This is what it says:
nameserver 192.168.0.1
search mshome.net
192.168.0.1 is the IP address of the Windows machine.
MSHOME is the name of the workgroup my Windows machine is in.

  • Open dns resolver issues on windows server 2008 R2

    my client is running a windows 2008 r2 server with dns and dhcp roles. it's not a domain controller, just a workgoup server.
    got a notification from my client's isp:
    "These attacks have been facilitated through DNS
    amplification attacks. AT&T has detected these attacks and has confirmed
    that the IP address x.x.x.x allocated to your Internet access account is
    accessible from the Internet as an open DNS resolver. "
    tried disabling recursion, but then there is no access to the internet.
    tried disabling the firewall rule for dns udp, and no access to the internet.
    does anyone have any idea how to correct this? do i need to add a public dns server to my dhcp scope for internet access? if i do, then what good is a dns server and it doesn't resolve internet addresses?
    Gary

    Just to add, I was wondering why you had port 53 opened to your DNS servers. And just to point out, that rule you created is a port translation rule that allows access to your DNS server from the internet, just as if you had created a rule to allow access
    to an internal web server for public use, or for allowing webmail (OWA) access from the internet to your internal mail server.
    What you did, as Keith said, will stop that, but to further point out, the rules are not really needed again, I would just remove the rules completely. For internet access, such as allowing your users to access websites, your DNS to resolve external names
    (whether using Root hints or a Forwarder), just about any firewall will allow that out-of-the-box. In some firewalls, you have to create a rule to the outside untrusted interface to "allow established" meaning when an internal request goes to an outside resource,
    such as a website, to allow the response back in.
    The only time you want to create rules is either you want to allow inbound traffic with a port translation rule (such as what you originally unknowingly did for TCP & UDP 53) to a web server, OWA, SMTP traffic to a mail server, etc.), otherwise,
    leave it out of the box.
    As for what the ISP is concerned about regarding DNS amplification attacks, is that they are a fairly recent method for attackers to create a DOS (denial of service). You can read up at a couple of recent discussions about what all that means in
    the following threads, with ways to stop or mitigate them.

  • DNS Resolver Issues + Mail.app (10.4.10)

    Not to be sarcastic,but I'm a little upset at the moment. Why is it that I spend $3000 on a fantastic laptop that never crashes, and no programmer caught the issue I'm about to describe.
    I set up 2 accounts in Mail
    1 Mac Mail
    1 POP
    The .mac account works great, as soon as I figured out that I need to relay mail I send through my POP Account's SMTP Server as they block port 25 for all mail other than my ISP domain. That's standard practice that I have no issues with. What I'm having issues with is my POP Account. I had Mail open to check for new mail every X minutes. After about 2 days of having it open, my incoming mail server began rejecting my password.
    I began troubleshooting by logging into my Webmail interface and verified the password was still correct.I then retyped the password in the mail program and kept receiving the password rejected box. Then I opened my key chain application and cleared out the password. After clearing out the keychain I exported my mailbox to my desk top and recreated the account. After the account recreation did not work I pinged my mail server using a terminal. The ping was successful . I took note of the IP address I inserted the IP address into the mail preferences incoming server. The mail program then begin working. I am curious why I can not use the proper qualified name pop.<ispname>.net Does anyone know how to correct this?

    oddly i fixed by deleting the account and creating it again.

    This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • How do I get the updates that refernce "Install this update to resolve issues in Windows." installed automatically?

    On Intune, I'm not certain what to tick off that will install the updates on Windows 7 that reference at the beginning of it's description line... "Install this update to resolve issues in Windows."  The only way that I can get this to prompt
    for install is to manually run Microsoft Update.  Equally odd is that when you run MU locally, these updates are detected and referenced as optional -- for example, 17 optional updates are available.  But when you click on that link to review
    these available updates, in the right pane detail for each update they are referenced as recommended.

    Yes, I know this is an old post, but I’m trying to clean them up. Did you solve this problem, if so what was the solution?

    Why did carefully over heating my 4s restore the wifi function? This, after 2 months of mysteriously grey out wifi buttons, loads of time trying to resolve issue with apple tech only to be told I must pay $199 to repair the problem. I'm disillusioned now

    Is the Wi-Fi button greyed out?  Try this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559
    Also, make a backup to iTunes of the device.  Then restore it as a new device.  If you still have wi-fi greyed out, then contact Apple again, and explain that you believe you have a hardware issue.  They may still ask for a $19 deposit, but if it is actually hardware related, then you won't be charged the $19.  Only if it is software related do you get charged that $19.

  • DNS Resolver not working with JDK 1.5.0_6 and Windows 2003

    I have a Windows Server 2003 machine which now has Java JDK 1.5.0_6 installed on it. Somehow the DNS resolver doesn't work - every call to InetAddress.getByName("host") throws an UnknownHostException. I've tried de-installed java and re-installing, but the problem remains. No traffic seems to be generated (i.e. no packets to port 53) when getByName() is called. I don't have any kind of firewall on the Windows Server 2003 machine.
    Has anyone ever seen this kind of behaviour / problem before and know of a solution?
    Thanks,
    Peter

    Ok, I finally managed to solve this problem. What was happening was that IPv6 was installed on this computer, and as a result Java was trying to do a DNS lookup using a IPv6 socket and failing. With the help of TracePlus Winsock, I discovered that internall Java's InetAddress.getByName does this:
    WSAStartup
    socket(INET6)
    getaddrinfo
    WSACleanup
    Two solutions are possible - either set the system preference java.net.preferIPv4Stack to true, or uninstall the IPv6 stack. Since I couldn't find a way to set the system preference in a persistent manner (apart from passing in an argument on the java command line), I uninstalled the IPv6 stack.
    Hope this helps someone else.

    Hello,
    I have a server that i try to connect which key fingerprint changes form time to time, and it stops me to connect (i get wrong password disconnect, although i am using an RSA key). Since its a physical machine lets exclude the part of any traffic shaping by the VPS provider. Also normally when i cant connect i cant see anything on the sshd logs of the machine. So this probably is a dns resolve problem ? Any recommendation or  knowledge that you can share with me to help me solve this problem ?

  • DNS Server Issues with Comcast and Airport Extreme wifi routers

    I am having significant challenges with 3 Airport Extreme (latest gen) wifi routers and my Comcast Xfinitity service.  It once worked just fine, but now I continually get the blinking amber lights stating "No DNS servers" for each of the Airport Extreme (AE) routers.  My configuration is:
    Coax cable -> Comcast Xfinity cable modem -> ethernet to 16-port gigabit ethernet switch ->->-> ethernet to 3 Airport Extremes around the house direct connected with switch
    I have many wifi devices throughout the house (iPads, MacBooks, home automation devices) as well as direct-connected devices via ethernet (one PC connected to AE router).
    Each Airport Extreme router is set with these settings in the Airport Utility app:
    Internet tab=  Connect using: DHCP
    Wireless tab=  Network mode: Create a wireless network
    Network tab=   Router mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
    I have attempted to put the Xfinity cable modem in bridge mode, and use the Airport Extreme to serve up the IP addresses, but still lost internet connectivity.
    I have also attempted to set the Network tab=> Router Mode to "DHCP and NAT" but get "Double NAT" error issues as well.
    I have tried using the Comcast DNS server addresses (75.75.75.75;75.75.76.76) setting on the Internet tab for the routers and do end up getting a green light, but NO internet connectivity.
    Lastly, I have tried using the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8;8.8.4.4) setting on the Internet tab the routers giving me the No DNS servers amber light error and again, no Internet connectivity for either wifi-connected or even ethernet connected (directly to Airport Extreme router) devices (like my PC) despite getting a green light on the router.
    Any this point, it really seems that these AE routers are NOT compatible with the Xfinity cable modem or service… (and yes, I've tried power-cycling and restarting the modem, and then the AE routers, MANY times to little avail).
    Should I move one of these Airport Extreme wifi routers to before the switch, and have the other 2 in Bridge mode after the switch?  Do I need to setup a specific range of DHCP reservation addresses for each different AE router?
    Appreciate any insight anyone can share with this aggravating DNS server issue between Comcast & multiple Airport Extreme wifi routers.

    I do not see anything wrong with your basic setup.. the issue is indeed the WAN ports of the AE.. AC version are having problems with some network equipment.
    You have listed a stack of things you have tried.. but I want you to move the ethernet patch cable you use on each AE to its LAN port instead of WAN.
    Restart the airport when you do that.. and then see if it becomes stable.
    In bridge mode the airport moves the WAN port to LAN.. but the WAN port setup itself seems more problematic than the LAN ports.
    There are other methods we can try if this does not work.. but in the end.. I would be tempted to take the whole lot back to apple.. they need to start making equipment that works with standard modems and switches.
    BTW what brand is the 16 port switch?? Does it happen to be managed (smart type)?
