DNS server isn't responding to certain IPs
Hi,
I have a laptop with DNS problem. It ping any internal ip but domain controller(my DNS server). if I change dns server to google's public dns, it works but I want to use my own dns server.
If i change IP address it works. If I give that IP address to another computer, the computer gives the same DNS error. So I figure out that this IP address is the problem and I have 3 IP addresses like this with the same problem.
How can I find out if My dns block that ip or How can resolve this issue?
Thank s in Advance.
Hi Mugurlu ,
What do you mean by saying :” It ping any internal ip but domain controller(my DNS server). ” .
If you mean it can’t ping the DNS server .
We could check there is route from clients to DNS server .And there is reverse route from DNS server to the clients .The firewall of DNS server should allow the network traffic .
If you mean it can’t resolve names .
First we need to ensure the firewall on DNS server allow the network traffic between server and the specific addresses .
Then we could use network monitor on DNS server to check if the query packets reached or not .
If not reached , we could check if there is route from clients to DNS server .
If reached and server responded ,we need to ensure there is route from DNS server to clients .Then we could use Nslookup on client to analyze the process .Open
Command Prompt ,type nslookup and type
set d2 .Then type a name ,we could find out the problem through the process .
If server doesn't respond ,we could enable debug logging on DNS server to analyze the process .Open
DNS Manager ,right click on DNS server and click Properties .On
Debug Logging tab ,select the box .
Here is the guide for Nslookup :

Hi, i am trying to setup back to my mac at home but I get the error "Back to my Mac isn't working properly because your DNS server isn't responding. Contact your ISP for an alternate DNS server address, and enter it in Network Preferences".
There is no documentation on how to solve this anywhere.
I have an Arris router set to bridged mode which is connected to a 5th generation airport extreme. I have tried using the google dns servers instead of the one assigned by the cable company in the AE but I still get the same error.
Any help would be much appreciated
KennethNew to BTMM, I got stung today with the silly DNS problem message. Solution:
1) Flush DNS cache with:
dscacheutil -flushcache;sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
2)System preferences > iCloud > untick BTMM then tick it again. The warning should have disappeared.
Edit #1
Apologies for the noise. The warning has come back
Edit #2
Just found out that BTMM is not compatible with double NAT. That's not helpful.

Some time ago I noticed that when I open up IE11 there is a very long delay waiting for the home page to open followed by an error page stating there is no connection and offers a Windows Network Diagnostic tool to "fix" the problem. After the tool runs for a short while, it returns with "The DNS Server isn't responding -- Detected". After I close the tool window, everything works fine from then on.
So, what's up with that? Is it a Verizon problem, a [Verizon provided] router problem or a problem on my side? I'm using the router Verizon provided when I opened the FIOS account about 3 years ago. I understand there is a new router out there and a local Verizon store told me that's what I needed ($100) to fix a problem that I don't believe is mine to fix.
BTW, when I told the rep at the local Verizon [operated] store about my Internet woes, he said "sounds like a router issue, because you're having Internet issues, I'll hook you up with free HBO for a year." I asked what about replacing my router and was told about the $100 box.It might also be worthwhile to use DNS Benchmark, a free utilty from GRC, to find the best DNS server(s) for your use.

"DNS server isn't responding" only after I start iTunes
I currently have iTunes 11.2.2.3 installed on a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. I've been using iTunes running on this laptop for a few years. I'm connecting to the internet via a wireless router.
This morning I noticed that I am unable to connect to the internet after I start iTunes. Specifically, I have replicated the following multiple times:
1. Start machine after being completely powered down.
2. Start web browser.
3. Load web pages on web browser successfully.
4. Start iTunes.
5. iTunes cannot connect to iTunes store (e.g., update podcasts).
6. Web browser no longer loads web pages.
7. Right click on wireless icon in system tray and select "Troubleshoot problems".
8. Troublshooting session reports "DNS server isn't responding".After further troubleshooting I found that the likely problem was with my Norton 360 installation. The repeatability of the steps above had to do with timing, in that when I restarted the computer there was a window during which I could access the Internet. Upon close monitoring I noticed that it took a while after startup for the Norton icon to appear in the system tray. Apparently once Norton 360 was fully started, then I would loose Internet connectivity.
As far as I can tell, the problem was not fixable by configuring Norton 360. In fact the Norton 360 interface would freeze up when I tried to access the security settings. So I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton 360, and so far it seems to have resolved the problem.
The issue with Norton 360 may have been caused by some ongoing system instablity (i.e., BSOD episodes). I'm hoping that the instability itself was actually caused by the previous Norton 360 installation, and will be fixed by this reinstallation. -
The DNS server isn't responding.
Just bought this WRT160N a few days ago, i set it up and had no problems, now, randomly i cant get the internet to work, every once in awhile it will work for a few minutes, then it will go back out again. When i troubleshoot the problem on Windows, I get "The DNS server isnt responding" *Detected* This computer is on a wired connection to my router, and is currently the only computer connected to my router. The connection works fine when I run the cable directly from my modem to the computer (which im doing right now) any help would be greatly appreciated!
Solved!
Go to Solution. To upgrade the firmware on your Router, you dont need to be connected to the Internet... Just connect the Modem to the Computer and download the firmware for your Router.... Once you have downloaded the firmware on your Router..... Connect the Modem to the Router on the Internet Port and the Connect the Computer to the Linksys Router on the Port No.1...Follow the instruction which i mentioned in my previous post, how to upgrade the firmware on your Router... Once the firmware is upgraded sucessfully.... Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

I originally posted this question to the community section and was advised to post it here. Please bear with me as this will be a long post. I'm including the scenarios involving this reoccurring issue, the trouble shooting steps I've already
taken and the results of several diagnostic tools and logs.
I have a Sony VAIOS VPCEBB33FM lap top since 2011. I have had this issue on an off for a long time. I'm at my wit's end. Any new insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Scenario Details
1) Some times it's on and off through out the day, sometimes it won't work all day, and once in a while it will work fine for the entire day.
2) I've had this issue across several wireless services, Clear Network accessed with WiMax, Library Wi-fi, Comcast cable internet using wireless router and Wi-fi, and Comcast Xfinity Wi-Fi, to name a few examples.
3) Other devices in the household or library will work with no problems such as my smart phone or my roommates' laptops or desktop computers.
4) Once in a while, the built-in wireless adapter is not found and I have to reinstall the driver. Also the diagnostic tool has had to reset my adapter on an increasing basis.
5) I had my hard drive replaced in December 2014 and my system restored from the System Restore disks that came with it when I bought the laptop. Even though I've been online on an infrequent basis it worked just fine for a while. Now that
I've been online a bit more I'm having the same issues again.
Below are my attempts at trouble shooting so far but I still have not been able to consistently resolve my DNS issues
1) Restarting my adapter
2) Turning off my laptop and removing the power supply for 5-10 minutes before turning it back on.
3) Using the IP Config in Command Prompt
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
4) Using the NetSh reset in Command Prompt and restarting my laptop
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset
ipconfig /flushdns
[restart laptop]
5) Configuring the TCP/IP in several settings
Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
I have used the following settings:
a) Obtain an DNS server address automatically
b) OpenDNS
208 67 222 222
208 67 220 220
c) Google DNS
8 8 8 8
8 8 4 4
6) Updating the driver for my Intel Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6250 AGN and Intel Centrino(R) WIMAX 6250 from the Intel website previous having my laptop wiped clean in 2014. It still did not resolve the issue. My laptop
manufacturer as not come up with an driver update for my adapter since 2010. I haven't tried to update the adapter driver from Intel's website since having my laptop repaired due to the fact that Intel strongly recommending using the manufacturer's updates
instead and frankly it didn't make much of a difference when I did it the first time.
7) The last one I've tried as of today is going into Services and changing the start up type to automatic for the following:
Computer Browser [changed from manual to automatic]
DHCP Client [already set to automatic]
DNS Client [already set to automatic]
Network Connections [already set to automatic]
Network Location Awareness [changed from manual to automatic]
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) [already set to automatic]
Server [already set to automatic]
TCP/IP Netbios helper [already set to automatic]
Workstation [already set to automatic]
...and I'm still having DNS issues.
My only guessing are that my laptop came with a lemon adapter that needs to be replaced, some advanced setting(s) that I'm not aware off, or my firewall/anti-virus is interfering. I've used Symmantic Anti-virus and Firewall in the past and currently
Avast Anti-Virus with Microsoft Network Firewall. I've had DNS issues with both anti-virus/firewall set ups.
Below are the results from the diagnostics and tests that I've ran.

Why do I always have to fix: "The proxy server isn't responding" when I turn on the laptop?
I always have to uncheck: use proxy server, click OK twice and check: Axiomatically detect settings, and this continues on and on again. Windows 8.1They'll help you over here.

Report Server does not respond after certain idle time
We have an oracle 10g application server on solaris 10.
The report server has the defaul settings for time out , callback etc..
After the report server stays idle for 2 or 3 hours and the first report that comes after that takes around 8 to 10 minutes to generate. The report server engine does not seem to be getting active immediately.
Is there any parameter I can change so that the reports do not get effected.
ThanksI have put the idle time out at 300 minutes and the max idle time as 350 minutes. But that does not seem to have helped. And also I have min engine as 1 , max as 10.
Even with the above settings , When the report engine is idle after 30 minutes the 1st report to generate after 30 minutes takes 9 minutes.
please let me know if there are any other parameters I need to change.
thanks -
I was having problem with my Back to my Mac as message was saying DNS Server not responding . I tried to turn my WIFI off, then my router to no avail. Decided to call Apple Support line in the UK . I got a call back immediatly and great support. The advisor took over my screen and we check that my laptop was synchronising with I phots and it was. The adviser also told that when the message DNS server is not responding next to Back to my Mac is has to do with Apple Server not mine , router etc... Hope this save others some time! Rather than spending time truining on and off changing IP address etc...
Thanks for your thorough post. I too need to use BTMM on almost a daily basis for my job, and it has fallen short countlness times. I too have taken great pains to check all of the typical trouble shooting steps within iCloud and in the Apple keychain on each Mac etc, but after the latest rounds of system updates from Apple a few weeks ago to Mountain Lion, BTMM on one of my Macs is completely broken and unusable. I would concur that if you need remote access for "real" mission critical use, just bite the bullet and pay for a service like LogMeIn. You won't regret it and you will get real software support.

Enterprise DNS servers are not responding when using Windows NLB with Direct Access 2012
Hi
We have installed Direct Access 2012 as one server installation:
- Two network cards. First one in DMZ and second one in internal network
- Two consecutive IP addresses configured in DMZ because of Teredo
- PKI because of Win7 Clients IPSec
- Our corporate network is native IPv4 so we use DNS64/NAT64 and DA-server is configured as DNS
- DA-servers are VMWare virtual machines
One server installation works fine and now we want to use Windows NLB as load balancing. NLB installation goes fine too,
but problem is DNS. If we still try to use DA-server as DNS there comes error message below
None of the enterprise DNS servers 2002:xxxx:xxxx:3333::1 used by DirectAccess clients for name resolution are responding. This might affect DirectAccess client connectivity to corporate resources.
When trying to configure DNS using Infrastructure access setup, DNS cannot be validated when using DA-servers DIP or cluster VIP. Only domain local DNS looks to be ok but those have no IPv6 addressess. So how DNS should be configured when using multicast
NLB?
Tried to remove name suffix then adding again => Detect DNS server => DA-server IPv6 address found => validate => The specified DNS server is not responding...
Then tried to ping detected address => General failure
NLB clusters are configured as multicast and static ARPs are configured too. Both clusters can be connected from those subnets as they should be.
Any clues how to fix this?

I'm running Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T410i. I ran the Lenovo update yesterday which updated Access Connections from 6.01 to 6.21. I then could not make any network connections to the Internet. I used Windows System Restore to back out the changes made by the Lenovo updater.
Since then, I am able to connect to the Internet using the wireless adapter, but the wired LAN connection fails to connect to the Internet because it doesn't recognize the DNS servers The wired LAN adapter is the Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection. The IP v4 configuration settings haven't changed (use DHCP, obtain IP and DNS addresses automatically), but it can't seem to connect to the DNS servers.
The message from Windows Network Diagnostics is:
Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding.
The symptoms appear the same as in this problem in the Lenovo support library, but that was occuring with Access Connections 2.60, a much earlier version of the software:
Network connection is not working if Access Connection is used to set DNS information - ThinkPad General
Symptom
When a wired (Ethernet or Token Ring), network profile is created with Access Connections v2.60, the user may be unable to connect to a LAN or the Internet.
Affected configurations
Any model ThinkPad system using Access Connections v2.60
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello Lenovo? Are you hearing us?
Welcome to the forum!
Yes, some Lenovo employees do read and post to this forum. Mark is quite active, and several others post as well. In addition, there are lurkers who just read without making public comments although sometimes they ask the mod team to either gather more information or pass along advice.
However, here are the expectations of their participation from the Welcome message:
These communities have been created to provide a high quality atmosphere in which users of Lenovo products and services may share experiences and expertise. While members from Lenovo may participate at intervals to engage in the discussions and offer advice and suggestions, this forum is not designed as a dedicated and staffed support channel.
The bottom line is there's no guarantee that you will get an answer to a question here directly from Lenovo.
On the other hand, you just might! ;-)

Changing DNS Server on Lion OD/Kerberos Master
I have an interesting task ahead of me, but am unsure how best to proceed.
I spent days setting-up my new Lion Server and attached Pegasus RAID array. There are 140 users, 8 share points, and hundreds of different ACL permutations within the AFP shares that reside on a thunderbolt-attached Pegasus array. The only services running on the box are DNS, AFP, and OD.
I added a secondary server and intended to use it as an OD replica (redundancy is great, but the speed increase would also be great). Problem is that I set them both with .local names. I can't get an OP replica to run unless they are within the same DNS zone, and so that is what I am looking to do.
I have read a lot of Apple support documents and a couple books, and understand that changing the DNS server will likely break OD (certainly Kerberos).
My goal is to re-zone the DNS while preserving OD users, groups, passwords, and most importantly: how they relate to the ACLs on the Pegasus unit (I would very much like to avoid having to re-do all those permissions - particularly within the Lion Server UI).
If I need to do a re-install and then laterally migrate, I certainly can. I am hoping for the path of least headache to be sure.
If anyone has advise on how to do this as painlessly as possible, I would appreciate it.Will the OD archive contain the old DNS settings and somehow muck this up?
I don't know the answer to all of your questions but I do know this: If you have an OD archive from a master that had an incorrect hostname, this information was put into your archive.
"Open Directory" is comprised of three components: PasswordServer, LDAPv3 and Kerberos. This is what is backed up during an OD Archive. So if you have a archive from a machine with messed up DNS, I would not trust that everything will be fine after the restore.
Maybe somebody else can chime in and offer you further help... -
DNS server's PTR record wrong?
I have a server I frequent that has an IP address of 10.1.1.2. It acts as an OD and AD server, DNS server, IM server and a few other things.
As of now, the DNS server only has 1 entry in it, for the DNS server itself. I got a request to add a second A record for a new accounting server. Easy enough right? I added an A record under my primary zone and made sure it was FQDN. I went to ping it by name and by IP and no luck - no resolution.
Whats odd is when I look at my records, I have 2 groupings of PTR records. One is my new one which makes sense : 1.1.10.in-addr.arpa. The other is the one that the DNS server originally had: 2.1.1.10.in-addr.arpa.
I'm thinking this is why I can't get my new A record to work.
I really REALLY don't want to kill OD or AD here. I know they lean on DNS to live. I have to get this fixed though. Can I delete both those records our of my primary zone, readd them, and all will work OK as long as I don't poke the primary zone? I'm assuming I can't rename a PTR record directly, right?
Any help would be super-duper appreciated! I have to fix this ASAP (obviously, right?).
Thanks!Your DNS server isn't really serving out much in the way of DNS, it's running the self-hosted configuration that's the default when no DNS services were established during the Mac OS X Server installation and configuration.
And if DNS services aren't right, then yes, the rest of the stack tends to be spotty. Including OD.
Here is how to set up DNS on Mac OS X Server and then you should be able to migrate to correct DNS services without wrecking OD. This if your existing domain choice and set-up for the self-hosted DNS was correct.
Basically, you get to nuke the existing forward and reverse zone (the default install creates one of each), and establish a forward zone for your domain name (and not the host's FQDN), and add your host name (which doesn't need to be an FQDN in this context) into the forward zone. This will then apply the zone name to create the FQDN. Server Admin should then establish one or more reverse zones, and as needed. -
Hi,
I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 Enterprise on Virtual Box both are 64bit versions.
I setup the AD DS and the DNS Server role on the server and set the server IP addresses as follow:
IP: 10.0.2.16
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 10.0.2.2
DNS: 127.0.0.1 (to itself)
On the Win7 machine I let the IP addresses be obtained automatically and set the DNS server IP manually as 10.0.2.16 (the IP of the server machine). IP addresses from the Win7 machine:
IP: 10.0.2.15
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 10.0.2.2
DHCP Server: 10.0.2.2
DNS: 10.0.2.16
But I still can't ping to the server. It says "request timed out" once and then "reply from 10.0.2.15: destination host unreachable"
I'm trying to join the Win7 machine to the domain on the server. But I get the error "the domain could not be contacted" every time. The details of the error is that the DNS server are not responding.
My guess: there is some problem with the DNS server setup but I don't know exactly what it is and how to resolve it.
Thanks for any help! Thanks a lot!
I changed both machines to bridged mode.
I can now ping the DNS server from the Win7 machine. That was just stupid from me, got me stuck for 2 days... -
Hi there,
I purchased a new MacBook Air on Sunday and am using OS X Yosemite 10.10.
Unfortunately since then I am having problems with connectivity with certain websites. It is not just a problem with my MacBook Air, because I also have a MacBook and an iPhone which won't let me access those websites either with this network. I haven't tried to access them from any other locations but I mainly use my devices at home so want to get this fixed. I believe that it is a problem with my connection not the devices as other websites such as this, Facebook, twitter, google, etc all work fine.
I have checked on http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com and it's just me!
If relevant, the certain websites are futurelearn.com as well as bluehost.com and sites that run through bluehost. I had problems with Bluehost not loading yesterday but Futurelearn was working absolutely fine yesterday - today I cannot access it at all.
Not sure what to do! Please help!
Thanks in advance.Stacy ...
Restart your internet modem and router then try Safari.
And check the firewall. Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall.
If it's on, click Firewall Options
You may need to click the padlock icon bottom left side of the Firewall tab to proceed.
If restarting the modem and router don't help, try this DNS server.
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
Click + and type:
208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
208.67.220.220
Click OK.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
