DNS Server Issues with Comcast and Airport Extreme wifi routers

I am having significant challenges with 3 Airport Extreme (latest gen) wifi routers and my Comcast Xfinitity service.  It once worked just fine, but now I continually get the blinking amber lights stating "No DNS servers" for each of the Airport Extreme (AE) routers.  My configuration is:
Coax cable -> Comcast Xfinity cable modem -> ethernet to 16-port gigabit ethernet switch ->->-> ethernet to 3 Airport Extremes around the house direct connected with switch
I have many wifi devices throughout the house (iPads, MacBooks, home automation devices) as well as direct-connected devices via ethernet (one PC connected to AE router).
Each Airport Extreme router is set with these settings in the Airport Utility app:
Internet tab=  Connect using: DHCP
Wireless tab=  Network mode: Create a wireless network
Network tab=   Router mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
I have attempted to put the Xfinity cable modem in bridge mode, and use the Airport Extreme to serve up the IP addresses, but still lost internet connectivity.
I have also attempted to set the Network tab=> Router Mode to "DHCP and NAT" but get "Double NAT" error issues as well.
I have tried using the Comcast DNS server addresses (75.75.75.75;75.75.76.76) setting on the Internet tab for the routers and do end up getting a green light, but NO internet connectivity.
Lastly, I have tried using the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8;8.8.4.4) setting on the Internet tab the routers giving me the No DNS servers amber light error and again, no Internet connectivity for either wifi-connected or even ethernet connected (directly to Airport Extreme router) devices (like my PC) despite getting a green light on the router.
Any this point, it really seems that these AE routers are NOT compatible with the Xfinity cable modem or service… (and yes, I've tried power-cycling and restarting the modem, and then the AE routers, MANY times to little avail).
Should I move one of these Airport Extreme wifi routers to before the switch, and have the other 2 in Bridge mode after the switch?  Do I need to setup a specific range of DHCP reservation addresses for each different AE router?
Appreciate any insight anyone can share with this aggravating DNS server issue between Comcast & multiple Airport Extreme wifi routers.

I do not see anything wrong with your basic setup.. the issue is indeed the WAN ports of the AE.. AC version are having problems with some network equipment.
You have listed a stack of things you have tried.. but I want you to move the ethernet patch cable you use on each AE to its LAN port instead of WAN.
Restart the airport when you do that.. and then see if it becomes stable.
In bridge mode the airport moves the WAN port to LAN.. but the WAN port setup itself seems more problematic than the LAN ports.
There are other methods we can try if this does not work.. but in the end.. I would be tempted to take the whole lot back to apple.. they need to start making equipment that works with standard modems and switches.
BTW what brand is the 16 port switch?? Does it happen to be managed (smart type)?

  • Are there any compatibility issues with Sonos and Airport extreme??

are there any compatibility issues with Sonos and Airport extreme??

Sonos uses its own priopietory wireless protocol SonosNet to distribute audio data among all its products, thus it should not affect other network devices which use standard WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n protocol at all though they may share the same radio channel for wirless signaling.
On my dual-band (5 GHz / 2.4 GHz) Airport Extreme staion, I select the option "802.11n Only (5GHz) - 802.11n (2.4GHz)" and turn on "Use wide channels" in Wireless configuration in order to use only 802.11n protocol and more radio channels to achieve maximum wireless bandwidth of 400 Mbps. This bandwidth is necessary for quick Time Machine backup to NAS connected to the Airport Extreme station through Ethernet cable. So my iMac and MacBook Pro always connected to the Airport Extreme through 5 GHz radio channel with 802.11n protocol whereas my iPhone 4S always connected through 2.4 GHz radio channel with the same protocol.
In my living room Sonos ZP-90 (same as new CONNECT model) zone player is connected to Airport Extreme directly through Ethernet cable (recommended by Sonos) and Sonos S5 (same as new PLAY:5 model) zone player in bedroom is connected wirelessly through SonosNet protocol to the ZP-90 zone player in living room.
These devices are in operation simutaneouly most of the time. Music is playing through the Sonos ZP90/S5 zone players througout the day, I am streaming viedo through Internet (fibre broadband 25 Mbps) on my MacBook Pro in bedroom or iMac in living room or reading news on my iPhone. So far so good and have no encounter any interference problem for about three years. Further more bandwidth for 802.11n protocol does not seem to be affected at all.
In fact with a low power Fujitsu USB drive (2.5" / 500 GB, designed for notebook) plug into USB port of Airport Extreme, it can be used as NAS drive for Sonos music distribution system without any problem. Just transfer all files from Music folder in my home directory on iMac into this NAS drive and set it up as music source in "Manage > Music Library Settings" in Sonos Controller for Mac application will do. Though the same drive can be served as Time Machine's backup disk as well, an independent full-fledged NAS drive for Sonos and Time Machine backup is better long-term solution for reliability and performance. With the NAS configured as sole music source, you do not need to keep any computer powered on all the time in order to play music through the Sonos system.

  • PC Used to work with XP and airport Extreme Basestation but not with Vista

Please help, my PC Used to work with XP and airport Extreme Basestation but not now with Vista. I have a MacBook Pro connected and also a Mac Pro connected to the network on it and they still work, i have put the latest software on the PC and the firmware is up to date. The only thing i can see on the network on the PC is the basestation Hard Disk (shared also to the Macs) but i cannot connect with the password, i have tried everything in my knowledge, including formatting the machine and reinsatlling OS and changing security setting to no avail. Any ideas anyone?

Does anyone know how to get the cingular 8525 phone which runs windows mobile 5.0 to connect with my current airport extreme wifi? Are they even compatible? I can connect to other wifis, but they have all been open to the public.

You'll probably get a better set of responses if you post your question in Apple's forum for Airport and Windows <http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1014> rather than this one, which is dedicated to Mac and Windows compatiblity issues.

  • Radius setup of Server 3.1.2 and Airport Extreme

I'm using an Airport Extreme and Mavericks Server 3.1.2. I've enable the Radius setting "Require user name and password login over Wi-Fi" in the Server application, and the wireless mode is showing use WPA2 Enterprise, and the Configurew Radius button is pointing to my Open Directory master at the right IP address. However, my wireless clients can still access the wireless network using a passphrase. No one has to login using credentials.
Any ideas on what's gone wrong?
One - I posted a similar message in the Airport Extreme thread not knowing which was right.
Two - I've seen many threads that deal with Radius on different access points, but none targeting this type of issue. Those have referenced creating a com.apple.radius SACL but does that apply here; since I'm using an Apple Airport Extreme?
    Thanks in advance.

You know, it is funny.  You post has made me realized that I have never done a multiple Airport setup on RADIUS.  Usually, I will do one Airport and a SonicWall or a bunch of third party access points that allow you to define the shared secret.
So, I am not sure you can use -addclient on Airports that are configured in WDS. I simply have been lucky enough never to run across this requirements.  I suspect you may need to run the:
    sudo radiusconfig --capture-base-station <airport> <server>
    Then run the -addclient.
Strange that I have not run across this.  But I am guessing the reason is that ever since Apple dropped the PoE Airport, we have found alternative products.  Only small installations (one base station) are using Apple's wireless tech.

  • Speed issue with TC and Airport Express 802.11n in WDS mode...

    Here is my problem.
I replaced my older base station / Express duo with
a new Time Capsule (1TB) and a new Airport Express (802.11n).
I set up the network with the TC as base station running a WDS network (WDS main) and the Express is the WDS remote.
When I check the wireless clients from the TC, I find my iMac running at 130Mbits and the Extreme at 54Mbits.
No other wireless clients are connected to the network (I kept my slower network as a parallel one for my "older" Macs).
The only other connected device is my Dish network DVR that is connected via an Ethernet cable directly to the Express.
So my question is why does the Express not communicate at >54 speed rate with the TC?
And, why does my iMac connect with 130 and not with 300Mbits?
    Any thoughts?

Instead of using WDS, you should take advantage of the "Allow this network to be extended" option that is available for the 802.11n AirPorts including the TC. WDS only operates in the 802.11g radio mode.
    Here's the basic setup:
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • 10.4.8 update - issues with mail and airport

Gah! Just as I was signing up so I could post on this board, my airport connection went bye-bye.
Initially I tinkered with my router (linksys) settings. Recycled everything a bajillion times. Not sure what caused a partial resolution, but my connection is no longer crawling, but it drops a few times a day. The only solution at this point is to recycle modem and router and restart computer.
Now I am having issues with my mail application. Whenever I "get mail" I am prompted for my password. I type it in, plus check the box "add to keychain". App searches for mail. So I went into account prefs and noticed there is no password in the dialog box. I type it in. If I save and close the dialog and then reenter, the password is once again missing. Huh??
So I reinstalled with the combo update (I had previously installed via software update), verifying/repairing disk before, repairing permissions after.
I have removed the system config folder in order for the system to create a new one.
When I look in keychain access, the only thing in there is the airport login. I have also performed a keychain first aid. Nothing appears to be wrong.
    Any suggestions??
    I patiently await responses.
Oh, and I applied the first update in proper fashion as well. No weird third party stuff, etc. And I didn't have any of these issues pre-update...
    mbp   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    1. Reset the router by holding down the button in the
    rear for 10 seconds.
I've done that ad nauseum, plus tweaked router settings, plus recycled modem/router many times. It does not appear to be a problem with the router hardware or software.
    2. Toss your Mail Account, and make a new one.
If indeed that is the solution, is there an efficient way to save/export messages so I don't lose them?

  • Canon i550 won't print with MacBook and Airport Extreme

Since we got a new MacBook, we upgraded our Airport Express (b/g) to Airport Extreme (n). Needed tech support from Apple to get the computers on the internet (something about the cable company switching IP addresses), which worked great, but since then the only problem is that I can't print wirelessly from the new MacBook to our Canon i550 printer, which is hooked up by USB to the Airport Extreme. (Ironically, when the internet wasn't working through the Airport Extreme, the one thing that DID work was printing wirelessly.) The other computer, a 2007 MacBook Pro, prints wirelessly with no problems, but I see that under "location" in the print utility it still has "Express" listed (on the MacBook I get the new network name, "Airport Extreme"). I've tried reselecting the printer in Bonjour, reselecting it in AirPort Utility under Printers, turning printer on and off, but no matter what, in the printer status box it just says "Connecting", and never actually prints. I just upgraded to 10.5.6 which still didn't help. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions, Brian!
Please work your way through the Apple Troubleshooting Guide to see if your HP might be compatible with the AirPort Express.
Keep in mind that if your device is compatible, only printing is supported at the USB port on the AirPort Express. So, if you need to scan, copy, fax or check ink levels, etc., you will need to hook the device directly to your computer.

  • Server issues with Indesign and Photoshop

    Hi,
We have recently moved to a Mac OS server for our company, but ever since doing so have started to have problems with our files corrupting.  We have since been advised by our IT contractor that Indesign and Photoshop files are now so sophisticated, with the way they access and use their database that it is best not to work on them from a server, as there are too many things that could cause problems with their database in a server situation.
When I heard this, I thought 'surely not' as I know most companies work from a server and I couldn't imagine Indesign and Photoshop wouldn't be robust enough to manage the complexities of a server situation.
Can anyone tell me of similar experiences, or is it more an issue we need to look at with the server itself?
Thank you so much for your help, it is greatly appreicated.
    Lydia

People work directly from the server all the time, and sooner or later experience file corruption. It isn't so much that the file is stored remotely as the potential for curruption due to network traffic is very high, particularly if you are making a large number of edits which must constantly be written to the file.
The recommended workflow is to copy the files you need to the local workstation, edit, then copy back to the server.

  • Printing issues with D1455 and Airport express

Hi, I'm having problems printing with an HP Deskjet D1455 and the airport express. The printing always halts after printing half the page.
Attached is another post related with this problem:
    "HI,
i just purchased the Deskjet 1455 and connected to the airport express for wireless printing. I followed the instructions of installing printer on windows with bonjour on the Apple website. After I get everything set, then I started to print, but it stopped while printing(It prints half of the document then stop). In the computer status says ''error'', and it is the same thing when I trying to delete it.
The printer works when I directly connect to the computer.
I want to use wireless printing, how to solve this problem? THANK YOU!"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1492845&tstart=0
Does anybody knows how can I can solve this?
    Thank you.

I came across your question and wondered if you could help me. I just bought a macpro with leopard and am having a heck of a time getting it to work with my design jet 800ps which is connected by usb cable. I installed the driver for the printer from the leopard cd but to no avail. The printer shows up in the printer list but when I send a file nothing happens. I have been on the phone with HP but nothing seems to make a difference.
    Thanks much

  • Server Issue with Oracle and ASP Connection

We got a new server and are trying to set it up with Oracle Client to allow our web application to connect to the database server. We are getting connection errors, but on the old server, it works fine. We have Windows 2003 and IIS 6.0 on the new server and Win2K and IIS 5.0 on the old server and it's Oracle 8i. Here is the error...
Err.description=Oracle client and networking components were not found. These components are supplied by Oracle Corporation and are part of the Oracle Version 7.3.3 or later client software installation. Provider is unable to function until these components are installed.
    Err.number=-2147467259
... We have the client installed, so not sure what to do from this point on. Can it be some type of a sharing issue, or network firewall issue?

Have you granted the IIS user read & execute access to the %ORACLE_HOME% directory and subdirectories?

Apple TV mirroring issues even with Mac mini, airport extreme bought at the end of last year, and an iPad 2

I have the same issue with ATV3 and iPhone 4S. Everything works properly, no buffering issues when watching netflix, vimeo, youtube BUT when I try mirroring even a small 15sec iPhone movie it stutters and buffers and results to a choppy playback..same with larger mp4 files such as 1-1.5GB, buffers forever and never plays, I just re-encoded the same movie to 700MB and plays perfectly..
Why Apple, why?..so close..I can accept the bigger movie files issue, but not being able to playback properly an iPhone movie is funny..I recorded a movie with lower bitrate through Filmic Pro (Economy mode, up to 16Mbps)
    and plays properly.
Is there an upcoming software update going to solve the problem or is it hardware related and therefore not fixable.
Please don't reply with a network related answer, by 2012 we know how to set up our networks and everything else runs flawlessly.
I'll apreciate a fast answer, we love Apple, but if it can't play an iphone movie (or a high quality movie from iTunes) it's just not up to my standards.
    Thanks again.

  • Is the Time Capsule wi-fi router compatible with the Nest thermostat? I've read where there are issues with the Nest and Airport Extreme (AE)? Is AE used in the Time Capsule?

I've read where there are issues with the Nest and Airport Extreme (AE)? Is AE used in the Time Capsule?
If so, i already have a wi-fi router, so can the Time Capsule simply be used for wireless backup instead of as a router if there is conflict?

A TC is fundamentally a AE with a sata chip included to drive the hard disk. Some slightly different bios to include disk functions, although most of those are also on the AE. So as a router it is 99.999% identical.
And yes, if you have another router you can easily bridge the TC and use wireless for backups and internet connection. Once you no longer route through the TC the issues with most NAT problems including port forwarding should disappear.. mostly this is due to all apple routers using NAT-PMP instead of upnp which is the near universal standard for opening ports.. without upnp apple keep their routers more exclusive.

  • Comcast HSI, AirPort Extreme Base Station issues

Recently, I've been having some connection issues with my Comcast High-Speed Internet and my AirPort Extreme Base Station. I'll be connected fine one minute, and the next my AirPort monitor drops to 2 bars of signal and nothing will connect. Resetting the base station and the modem works about 50% of the time, while just sitting here "dealing with it" works the other half of the time.
I rent my cable modem from Comcast, and I believe it is the Terayon TJ715. I went to the Apple Store San Francisco and had my base station replaced, thinking it was the culprit, but alas, the problem is continuing, only less frequently.
I've replaced all my ethernet cables, tried it with my AirPort Express (which works more often, yet has the same problem occasionally), yet my connection uptime and signal still drops to 2 bars and essentially disconnects.
Even stranger, the computer I have connected to the LAN port seems to work fine even when the computers connecting wirelessly are having issues.
I'm going down to a Comcast Support Center on Friday to (hopefully) replace my modem with a newer model (someone told me that older Comcast modems "kill" AirPort Base Stations), but other than that, any ideas? Anyone have this type of issue with Comcast in the past?
The 3 machines im running are:
    Dual-Core 2.3Ghz Power Mac G5 via AirPort
867MHz PowerBook G4 (Titanium) via AirPort
    800MHz iMac G4 (Flat-Panel) via Ethernet
    Thanks,
    Alexis
    Dual-Core 2.3GHz Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Don,
Thank you for the link. However, it did not seem to solve my issue.
It's not that I haven't been able to connect to the internet at all using wireless. I will be connected fine (all 3 computers connecting to the internet simultaniously) when suddenly, any machine connected via AirPort (specifically my Dual-Core Power Mac G5) will receive two bars of signal and will no longer connect to the internet. The only remedy I've found is to reset both the cable modem and AirPort Extreme Base Station, and this only works about 50% of the time.
I am going to have Comcast replace the modem (and in the meantime, get new Ethernet cables) tomorrow, so hopefully I won't be having this issue anymore, but I'm more curious what may be causing the issue. Have you heard anything about older Comcast modems causing latency issues with AirPort Extreme Base Stations?
    Thanks again,
    Alexis
