DNS Server on Server 2012 R2 Configuration

I have setup a Server 2012 R2 DC with AD/DHCP/DNS. But there are strange things going on with DNS. First in the DNS manager there are two DNS Servers listed,
servername and servername.local. Also, sometimes if I browse the network from the server, there will be no devices listed, other times all devices are listed. everything else seems normal, nslookup, ping internal
and external. Would appreciate any insight with this. Thanks.

Hi Looks like you have one AD integrated Zone and one Standard Primary or secondary zone.
You can check this if you expand the zone and right click on Forward lockup zone and select Properties. Check under General tab.
If you have an AD integrated zone and you don't need the other one I would take a backup and delete it. As if a zone is not AD integrated it save as a file in c:\winodws\system32\dns\.dns file ( isldc-01.local.dns)
Thanks

  • Server 2012 adfs configuration with o365

    Hello Support,
Currently we have using o365 email account and ad server 2012. how we can start configuration adfs with server 2012 step by step.

    Hi,
Here is a walkthrough article below, most of the contents also apply to ADFS on Windows Server 2012:

  • Server 2012 Sharing Configuration.

We recently just deployed Server 2012 Domain. It has 6 Shares that everyone has access to. I want to create a group that is only read only. I have a lot of dwg, excel I don't want this group to be able to modify just view? What is the easiest way to do this
without doing thousands of files manually? I have created a group called read only and put users in the group and applied file permissions to the group but still no luck? Any ideas?

If you have full for domain users, or authenticated users you would need to remove those otherwise users will get full access based on those groups and the new read only group isn't really doing anything.
    1) go to each folder and stop inheriting permissions, it should ask if you want to copy current say yes.
    2) now you have folders with no inheriting permissions add the users you want to have full access to a group and assign it to the folders and subfolders.
    3) add the group you want to have read only to folder and sub folders.
    4) remove generic groups from the folder like authenticated users, domain users, or everyone if there.
    5) if you wanted you could create a group for full access and assign only the read only to authenticated users instead of creating two groups. this way all authenticated users would have read only by default only full access users would need to be added
to group, the read only because they are in authenticated users would essentially be ignored.
security is inclusive with all group memberships and deny will override any allow so be carful with denying rights.

  • Server 2012 R2 Configure Windows Server Essentials" fails at 87%

I've tried all the suggestions here https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/3273ae3f-4952-4f96-be48-07bee6986e57/error-server-essentials-post-deployment-fails-at-0?forum=winserveressentials

short of a reformat, but it still fails for me at 87%. I have no ServerFolders folder to delete or rename, although I did at one point have an additional disk attached that had an old installation. possibly with ServerFolders, but I don't recall trying to
install the Essentials role with that drive attached.
I can provide the CBS log if preferred. I have been unable to find anything of use myself there.

  • Cannot join Server 2012 machine to domain

I am trying to join a clean  Server 2012 machine configured with Active Directory Domain Services and DNS features enabled to a domain (alekatest.com) which I have purchased. The Active Directory Domain Services option in Server Manager advises me that
the server requires promotion to a Domain Controller, but if I select "Add a domain controller to an existing domain" and enter "alekatest.com", and supply Domain Admin  credentials I get a message "Encountered an error contacting
domain alekatest.com. The server is not operational". The DNS server has address 10.0.0.2.
When I try and change from workgroup to new domain alekatest.com, it fails with the message "No records found for given DNS query. The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.alekatest.com". The server is connected by Ethernet to
a wireless router in a home network.
The ipconfig/all data from the server is:

Any help would be much appreciated

You're confusing DNS Domains and Active Directory Domains. While there are similarities the two are and do completely different things.
A DNS domain, in your case alekatest.com hosted by crazydomains.com is used to direct people to resources, for instance on the internet, to get to things like your website, email etc. It's not specific to Windows, and generally speaking after purchasing
it from a 3rd party you control what the DNS records are through that 3rd party.
An Active Directory domain is what you're referring to when you talk about joining a machine to a domain, setting up users on a domain, controlling access to resources on your network etc. This doesn't require you to purchase a domain from a 3rd party, and
could potentially be called anything you like.
So, in terms of your AD server, assuming you don't already have an AD domain configured on another AD controller on the network, when you do the setup you'll need to select the option to create a new domain. You could then set it to use alekatest.com, but
that isn't recommended as you can get into all kinds of issues with your local and public DNS records conflicting, so unless you know what you're doing and why you're doing it I'd suggest avoiding that. A better idea would be to set the AD domain to something
like alekatest.local. That would then become the local domain, so for instance your users would login as akekatest\<username> on the domain, and your local machines can then be joined to that domain.
Once all that is done, if you did need to have local records for alekatest.com pointing to local resources, there's nothing stopping you from adding that zone into DNS Manager on the AD server and configuring the records accordingly, however be aware that
once you did that your server would assume that it has all the records for the domain. So if you had a website configured on
www.alekatest.com and had the DNS records for that pointing to your website hosted somewhere else via your domain provider, if you didn't re-create that same record on your local copy of the domain then you'll be unable
to reach that website from your local network (since your users will be trying to find it locally rather than on the internet).
    Hope that makes sense.

  • Can't override DNS Server settings - can only append!

See this thread for a similar question:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3555096
I have also filed this with Apple (Problem ID 5159216). Here is the text of the report (with a few bits removed - not crucial to understanding the report).
If anyone has suggestions/clues to resolve, please advise. Thanks!
    Summary:
This problem concerns AirPort Extreme (802.11n) at revision 7.1. I will summarize with a comparison between AirPort and MacOS X.
MacOS X and Airport Extreme (referred herein as "AE") both permit editing of DNS server settings whether in DHCP or Manual mode.
When MacOS X DNS server settings are set manually by the end-user, the new server IPs are used (good). When AE's DNS server settings are overridden by the end-user, the new server IPs are NOT used (not good)! Rather, the DHCP-supplied DNS server always pre-empts whatever is given in the AE Configuration UI.
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Using AirPort Extreme (802.11n) at revision 7.1 and MacOS 10.4.9 on a MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo). The AE has been previously configured for IPv4 using DHCP and the MacBook is successfully connected and resolving domain names through the AE.
    2. Visit "Apple Menu > Location > Network Settings" and check the AirPort TCP/IP settings. For purposes of this test, make sure the "DNS Servers" field is EMPTY so MacOS X defaults to the AE's DNS settings, then close System Preferences.
    3. Run "AirPort Utility" (the newer version, not "Airport Admin Utility") and configure the AE under test. Pick the "Internet" icon in the toolbar and note the Internet Connection settings.
    4. In this test, Configure IPv4 is set to "DHCP" and the DNS Server(s) field contains two DNS IPs assigned by the Internet Service Provider. In my case that's Cablevision's Optimum Online service. You may or may not see IP addresses here, but in my case they are visible.
    5. As the DNS Server(s) are editable, and they both show ISP-supplied addresses, they can be changed to whatever alternate IPs you wish. For instance, change them to these alternate DNS IPs from OpenDNS.com: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. (You could use any alternate set of IPs but for the purpose of this test use the OpenDNS IPs.) Update the AE and restart.
(For additional reference, http://www.opendns.com/start/airport.php shows instructions for the older AirPort Admin Utility, but the concept is exactly the same.)
    6. Normally you shouldn't have to restart the MacBook Pro since we're just using the AE settings, but go ahead and do that just to be consistent with this test.
    Expected Results:
Now for the moment of truth! We want to verify that we're using the OpenDNS IPs for our DNS Servers. One nice feature OpenDNS has is automagic redirection for certain domain name typos.
Here's an example. Drop to shell (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and try this command (excluding the $ prompt, natch):
    $ dig craigslist.og
The "og" typo is deliberate. We really want to go to craigslist.org. If you're using the new OpenDNS IPs, you will STILL get an Address (A) record with an IP like so:
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    craigslist.og. 0 IN A 208.69.32.130
If you had entered "craigslist.og" in Safari, you would end up at 208.69.32.130 (an OpenDNS server) and then redirected to craigslist.org.
    Actual Results:
Alas, that's not what happens! Instead, you get NO IP address, like so:
    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;craigslist.og. IN A
This means we're not actually using the OpenDNS IPs. What's happening?
To find out, I spoke with the AirPort support group (Case # xxx-xxx-xx). I learned that, despite being allowed to edit and override the IP addresses provided via DHCP, the AE still uses the DHCP-provided DNS server if available.
Again, the user interface suggests that I'm allowed to override the DHCP-provided DNS IPs as shown in the UI. Even though I can do this, the AirPort will still keep note of any DHCP-provided DNS Server IPs and use those first.
True, I can switch to Manual network settings (and then my own DNS Server IPs take effect). Of course this is problematic when the ISP renews my IP address (which it does from time to time).
Another workaround is to use the "DNS Servers" settings noted in step 2 (above). However this is also problematic if I want to keep my network settings simple. It requires a "Home Network" location and an "Office" location. Still not preferable, but it's a workaround.
    Regression:
    n/a
    Notes:
I would like AirPort's DNS settings to be overridden in the same way OS X allows DNS settings to be overridden. The user interfaces suggest this is possible but it is not. It's only possible in the OS X case. Having the same flexibility on the AirPort would be most welcome.

Afraid of the answer...sheesh...you must be a child. This has nothing to do with masquerading anything. The issue being discussed here is that people want to manually assign a dns server address via the new AEBS, while maintaining DHCP for IP address assignments through their ISP. For example, I would like to have opendns.com take care of all dns addressing at the router level, even though I have "Configure IPv4" set to "Using DHCP". If you do not understand why one would want to use something like opendns.com, please visit their website and enlighten yourself. The fact that the dns server address fields are editable when set to "Using DHCP" leads one to believe that you can manually assign a dns server in this configuration; however, under firmware 7.1.1, you still cannot. The previous iteration of the airport hardware can do it, as can nearly any router you pull off the shelf. In addition, this is something that can easily be done at the individual-computer level in OS X; however, many people would prefer to administer their network at the router level. That is the issue being discussed here. Either you can't read or you are purposely derailing the thread.

  • GSS as primary DNS Server for Intranet

    Hi,
Can the GSS be used as a as primary DNS server for Intranet? An additional DNS server can be configured to answer the unknown Records like MX by GSS.
if it can be configured, I would be thankful if anyone shares with me the brief configuration steps Apart from configuring Answers, answer groups, domain lists, source address lists, DNS rules.
    with thanks
    sathappan

Yeah I'd certainly recommend against it! So essentially the client machines are unable to update or query dynamic AD related DNS records since they're not pointing to the DNS servers actually used by your AD server(s). I could well imagine that causing
issues, and meaning that some AD functionality won't work correctly.
I know you can directly integrate BIND with AD, eg so that the BIND servers are the ones used by AD, though I haven't tried it, but this seems to be neither.
I can't find any articles relating to your exact situation, presumably no one else has tried to use such a mixed and disjoined setup. I'd focus on looking for articles relating to why you shouldn't point your users at a router (most commonly in small setups
on ADSL) for the DNS rather than directing them to the server for DNS and then having that query the router for external results. It's a more common scenario and you're more likely to find articles relating to it.
One article you might find useful is
http://msmvps.com/blogs/acefekay/archive/2009/08/17/ad-and-its-reliance-on-dns.aspx which talks in terms of using your ISP's DNS servers on the client machines, but in your situation it sounds like the BIND servers are essentially providing an equivalent
    setup.
There's also various discussions and comments on the topic elsewhere on these forums, for instance

  • DHCP Failover Server 2012

    Hi,
I have a Problem with DHCP Failover in Windows Server 2012
We configured 2 Windows Server 2012 with DHCP Role and created a Scope with loadbalancing algorithm.
The Problem is, that the two DHCP Servers Show different statistic Information. DHCP 1 has 254 addresses and 218 in use. DHCP Server 2 has 254 addressses and 187 in use.
We found situations when one DHCP Server has no available IP addresses and the other one has about 40% available addresses.
Why do the Servers have different available address spaces ? We have one scope with one class c net, 254 addresses.
Our Szenario is with this config not high available, cause of sometimes running out of IP addresses on one DHCP Server.
    Thanks for help

Björn Schiemann LemonTec IT Systems KG htttp://www.lemontec.de

    Hi Bjoern,
Would you please provide us your detailed load balance configurations.
In load-balance mode of operation both the servers respond to client requests. Here’s how the servers ensure the distribution of client requests between themselves:
Each DHCP server on receiving the client request calculates hash of the MAC address in the client request as per hashing algorithm specified in RFC 3074. Each server hashes any MAC address
to a value between 1 and 256. If the load distribution ratio between the 2 servers is left at the default of 50:50; and if the hash of the MAC address falls between 1 and 128 then the first server will respond to the client request else if the hash is any
value between 129 and 256, the other server responds to the client. This ensures that only one server responds for a specific client. If the load distribution ratio has been changed by the admin to a different value, the distribution of hash buckets would
be in that proportion. The admin does not need to configure the MAC addresses on any server configuration a-priori.
Quote from DHCP Failover Load Balance Mode
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/teamdhcp/archive/2012/08/06/dhcp-failover-load-balancing-mode.aspx
In addition, I notice that you have a Class C network for the scope, why does each DHCP server have 254 IP address available?
    Thanks.

  • Windows Server 2012 - Direct Access clients and the Windows 8 firewall

    Hi,
We're running a simple proof-of-concept for Server 2012 Direct Access, we have a single DA server behind a firewall using NAT. We have a number of client devices setup for DA and running Windows 8.
Our issue is that we can only get the Windows 8 direct access clients to connect (when outside the corporate network) and work with the windows firewall disabled (public network profile).
With the windows firewall disabled everything works exactly as expected. When outside the corporate network the client detects the network state (public network profile), connects via DA and all internal resources can be accessed successfully...fantastic.
Is there some specific guidance on manually configuring the windows 8 firewall for Direct Access ? We've tried the obvious TCP:443 with edge traversal enabled but without success.
Much of the information we have found relates to UAG rather than Windows 2012 DA.
    Any assistance is appreciated.

    Hi,
There isn’t any specific configuration on the firewall.
Just confirm that port 443 can be forwarded to DirectAccess server.
Of course, make sure you are using IPsec first.

  • Server 2012 DNS Configuration without using Active Directory

I need step by step instructions to configure a simple DNS setup on Server 2012.
Our server is only a file and application server without Active Directory. Basically we are setup only as a workgroup. Everyone has permissions to use everything.
The first window of the wizard starts off with " enter the domain name". I am stumped from there .
I understand that all the workstations should only be pointing to the server. Where should the server go, to get its information?
I would be much obliged for any easy information as we don't have an IT guy. Thanks

A quick search of TechNet for "dns step-by-step" turns up a nice primer as the first item -
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/1/0/b106fc39-936c-4857-a6ea-3fb9d1f37063/Windows%20Server%202008%20Step-by-Step%20Guide%20for%20DNS%20in%20Small%20Networks.doc
This document starts off explaining the terminology, such as 'domain', which is basically the naming convention.  For example, microsoft.com is a domain name.  The document does show installation with Active Directory, but it is not a requirement.
You can run the wizard on its own with no problem.  The wizard does most of the work for you and does provide help along the way.

  • Deleted failed DC from the domain (Server 2012 R2) - Now after doing metadata and DNS cleanup, I can no longer promote a new DC to the domain

I work for a university and teach IT courses to undergrad and graduate students. The details below are pertaining an isolated lab environment
I had a storage failure in my lab and the DCs became corrupt. This is a university lab environment so there isn't anything crucial on here. I just would rather avoid rebuilding the domain/forest and would rather use this as a learning experience with my
    students...
So after the storage failed and was restored, the VMs hosted became corrupt. I did a NTDSUTIL to basically repair the NDTS.dit file but one of my DCs reverted to a state before DC promotion. Naturally, the domain still had this object in AD. After numerous
failed attempts at trying to reinstall the DC on the server through the server manager wizard in 2012 R2, I decided that a metadata cleanup of the old failed object was necessary.
Utilizing this article, I removed all references of the failed DC from both AD and DNS (http://www.petri.com/delete_failed_dcs_from_ad.htm)
So now that the failed object is removed completely from the domain and the metadata cleanup was successful, I then proceeded to re-install the necessary AD DS role on the server and re-promote to the existing domain. Pre-Requisites pass but generate some
warning around DNS Delgation, and Dynamic Updates (delegation is ignored because the lab is isolated from external comms, and dynamic updates are in fact enabled on both my _msdcs and root domain zones).
Upon the promotion process, I get the following error message (also worth mentioning - the account performing these operations is a member of DA, EA, and Schema Admins)
    The operation failed because:
Active Directory Domain Services could not create the NTDS Settings object for this Active Directory Domain Controller CN=NTDS Settings,CN=domainVMDC1,CN=Servers,CN=Default-

As you can see, this error seems odd considering. Now that I'm down to a single DC and DNS server, the sync should be corrected. I've run a repadmin /syncall and it completed successfully. Since then, I've run dcdiags and dumped those to a text as well and
    here are my results...

From what I can gather, there is a definite DNS issue but I don't have any stale records to the old DC stored anywhere. I've tried this with a new server as well and get similar errors...
At this rate I'm ready to rebuild the entire forest over again. I'm just reluctant to do so as I want to make this a learning experience for the students.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As you can see, there seems to be some errors. The one that I did correct was the one around the _msdcs NS record being unable to resolve. For whatever, reason the name wasn't resolving the IP but all other NS tabs and records were. Just that one _msdcs
sub-zone. Furthermore, the mentioning of any connections to root hint servers can be viewed as false positives. There is no external comms to this lab so no communication with outside IPs can be expected. Lastly, they mentioned a connectivity issue yet mention
that I should check the firewall settings. All three profiles are disabled in Windows Firewall (as they have been the entire time). Thank you in advance for your help!
