DNS Server settings not working as expected ....?

Greetings
I have our load balancer/firewall setup to where if someone enters a hostname like (www.example.com) it points it to a local server at 10.0.1.2
When logged into the network, the DNS Server that pulls up is 10.0.1.1 (IP of firewall), which is fine, but I also have the two openDNS servers at the 2nd and 3rd slots manually entered.
If the opendns servers are listed, the ping returns the public IP of www.example.com, but if removed, it does the right thing and pings the internal IP address.
Even though the 10.0.1.1 DNS server setting is first, it doesn't seem to use that setting when you have DNS servers entered manually.... any idea why and how to make this stop?
I prefer to leave the opendns settings in the DNS server settings (for when I'm switching around to various networks) ...

Quick update. Added to a previously filed bug. Looks like it's assigned now so maybe we'll see a fix for this soon.

  • Drive Map GPO and Item-Level targeting using DNS Computer Name not working as expected

    I've run into a snag trying to move from logon script based drive mappings, to a GPO based Drive map solution and I'm hoping somebody can shed some light on the problem that I am seeing.  We started down the GPO based drive mappings because we have
    a handful of Windows 8 client computers which don't run the logon script based drive mappings.
    I put together a basic Drive Maps GPO.   I'm mapping 3 drives, I've linked the GPO to a computer container OU for testing and everything is working just fine.  I have 3 different Windows 8 client PC, all domain joined, and all 3 run the GPO as
    expected.
    The problem is when I attempt to apply Item-level targeting.   I've found that if I define item-level targeting to use the NetBIOS name of the computer, I can either apply the GPO at an individual computer level, or I can exclude the GPO for that individual
    computer by toggling between IS and IS NOT.   However, when I choose to define the computer name by choosing the DNS option, the GPO does not apply as expected.
    So, if I say "the DNS computer name is example1.mydomain.com" and I apply the GPO, it applies to example1, example2 and example3.   And if I instead say, "the DNS computer name is not example1.mydomain.com", then it doesn't apply
    to example1, example2 or example3.     Obviously, I would expect it to apply or not apply only to example1.mydomain.com.
    If instead, I say "the NetBIOS computer name is example1", and apply the GPO, then example1 gets it, and example2 and example3 do not.   If I say, "the netBIOS name is not example 1", then example1 does NOT get the drive mapping,
    but example 2 and example3 do.   < This is exactly what I want and I can continue to just use NetBIOS names...but I don't understand why DNS isn't working in the same manner.
    My clients are all using DHCP and using domain controllers for DNS.   All 3 machines are in the mydomain.com namespace.  The mydomain.com namespace is an active directory integrated zone.   We have reverse zones in place for the dns records.
     I can ping the machines from the DC's as well as the machines themselves.  I can run nslookup and resolve the computer name for each host using the FQDN.  I can also run a ping -a IP_ADDY and get the FQDN back.  The DC's themselves are
    running Server 2008 R2.   I honestly don't see any issues from a name resolution standpoint on the network itself.
    So, any suggestions as to why defining the shortened NetBIOS name works just fine, but using DNS with a FQDN does not?   (I've tried the DNS name using just the name, the name., as well as name.mydomain.com and name.mydomain.com.)

    And here is the result from a Windows 7 host,  which is named d2-7-user1...thus it should map the T drive and in fact does;

  • Windows - Use system proxy settings not working as expected

    Hi everyone,
    I have a bit of an issue that I could use some help with. We currently have remote users that utilize an SSTP VPN connection to access our internal network. Once connected, those users are required to use an internal proxy server to connect to the Internet. The proxy server is Microsoft's TMG and utilized domain authentication.
    On our remote Windows clients we have their Internet Options configured to utilize a proxy as follows:
    Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings -> No proxy configured at all
    Internet Options -> Connections -> Highlight SSTP Connection -> Settings
    Use a proxy server for this connection -> IP/Port of Proxy Server
    Firefox and Chrome are both configured to use system proxy settings.
    Here is my process to demonstrate the issues:
    Remote client workstation is rebooted.
    With the above configuration just after a reboot, a remote user that is not connected to the VPN can browse the Internet with Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox. None of the browsers prompt for credentials.
    A remote VPN connection is then established.
    FF is opened and HTTP connections utilize the proxy server. However, HTTPS connections do not use the proxy server, but instead attempt to use the default gateway. FF does not prompt for credentials. FF is closed.
    Chrome is opened and can access both HTTP and HTTPS sites without issue. No credential prompt. Chrome is closed.
    IE is opened and can access both HTTP and HTTPS sites without issue. No credential prompt. IE is closed.
    Here's where it gets weirder...
    FF is then reopened. The VPN connection is still up. FF will prompt for credentials. Domain credentials are supplied and FF can now utilize the proxy for both HTTP and HTTPS connections. FF is closed.
    VPN is disconnected.
    FF is opened and cannot access the Internet as it is still trying to use the proxy server. FF is closed.
    IE is opened and can access the Internet. IE is closed.
    Chrome is opened and can access the Internet. Chrome is closed.
    FF is reopened and can now access the Internet. FF is closed.
    In summary, in the above scenario FF acts in an unexpected manner with regards to proxy usage when "use system proxy settings" is applied. However, Firefox begins acting as expected after IE is opened and closed. For example, connect to VPN, open IE, close IE, open FF, and everything works accordingly. Disconnect the VPN, open IE, close IE, open FF and everything works as expected.
    Any insight you can provide would be appreciated as it is affecting our FF users and the sooner we can achieve resolution the better. As a note, we've also worked through this issue with WPAD and proxy auto-detect. I've intentionally removed these from the equation to simplify troubleshooting.
    Thanks

    Quick update. Added to a previously filed bug. Looks like it's assigned now so maybe we'll see a fix for this soon.

  • New server settings not working - temporary Verizon problem

    I was having a lot of problems connecting with email, and did an online chat. I was told that they are having problems with the new pop and smtp server settings. He told me to change them back to the old incoming and outgoing, but keep the new ports. This fixed my problems. He said the new server settings should be working again within 24 hours.

    BillSamuel wrote:
    Now incoming and outgoing are not working, and pop and smtp are. I don't know how many times we will have to go back and forth among these settings. But if you can't connect the one way, you probably can the other way. This transition is not going well. Ideally, there should be a period of transition in which either will work, but instead it's going back and forth.
    Maybe the problem is only on certain Verizon email servers. I am in VHO 1 (North Texas) and have been using these new pop/smtp settings for many weeks, not a single failure. And before that the incoming/outgoing settings for probably a year or more, again, no problems. This is on both Windows Live Mail and Thunderbird.
    If people would put their location (preferably VHO, but state and/or town would be better than nothing) in their profile here, or include the info in their posts, it might help identify when problems are regional or location dependent. As it is now, when people just post that something doesn't work, and someone else says it does, there is no way for anyone to help or see a pattern. Just a thought.....

  • Content Server Settings not working (for PPM)

    Hi,
    We are on PPM5.0.
    We have set up the Content Server settings according to the PPM
    configuration guide.
    We, however, still see the documents (uploaded in the project) showing
    up on the PPM Server.
    We checked the entries in table CFF_CONT (in the PPM server), and see
    the contents updating when a document is uploaded. This makes us
    conclude that the documents are still not being stored on the Content
    Server.
    Any switch/flag that needs to be set/reset in the WAS and/or Content Server that'll help??
    Or anything else...???
    Thanks.

    Earl Powers BSR2751547 Thank you all. your suggestions really helped.

  • TCP Window sizing not working as expected for Windows server 2008 R2 SP1

    Hi ,
    TCP window size is not working as expected. It is varying . Aplied the hotfix suggested by Microsoft and set the multipliccation factor as 1.The window size is not getting auto tuned based on the client machine. The data transfer rate is getting degraded.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Pro1962

    Hi,
    I think window auto-tuning is enabled.
    You can disable it by running the following commend.
    netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
    Hope this helps.

  • Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding [and I'm at my wit's end!]

    I originally posted this question to the community section and was advised to post it here.  Please bear with me as this will be a long post.  I'm including the scenarios involving this reoccurring issue, the trouble shooting steps I've already
    taken and the results of several diagnostic tools and logs.
    I have a Sony VAIOS VPCEBB33FM lap top since 2011.  I have had this issue on an off for a long time.  I'm at my wit's end.  Any new insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Scenario Details
    1)  Some times it's on and off through out the day, sometimes it won't work all day, and once in a while it will work fine for the entire day.
    2)  I've had this issue across several wireless services, Clear Network accessed with WiMax, Library Wi-fi, Comcast cable internet using wireless router and Wi-fi, and Comcast Xfinity Wi-Fi, to name a few examples.
    3)  Other devices in the household or library will work with no problems such as my smart phone or my roommates' laptops or desktop computers.
    4) Once in a while,  the built-in wireless adapter is not found and I have to reinstall the driver.  Also the diagnostic tool has had to reset my adapter on an increasing basis.
    5)  I had my hard drive replaced in December 2014 and my system restored from the System Restore disks that came with it when I bought the laptop.  Even though I've been online on an infrequent basis it worked just fine for a while. Now that
    I've been online a bit more I'm having the same issues again.
    Below are my attempts at trouble shooting so far but I still have not been able to consistently resolve my DNS issues
     1) Restarting my adapter
     2) Turning off my laptop and removing the power supply for 5-10 minutes before turning it back on.
     3)  Using the IP Config in Command Prompt
         ipconfig /flushdns
         ipconfig /registerdns
         ipconfig /release
         ipconfig /renew
     4) Using the NetSh reset in Command Prompt and restarting my laptop
         netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
         netsh winsock reset
         ipconfig /flushdns
         [restart laptop]
     5)  Configuring the TCP/IP in several settings
        Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
        I have used the following settings:
           a) Obtain an DNS server address automatically
           b) OpenDNS
               208 67 222 222
               208 67 220 220
           c) Google DNS
               8 8 8 8
               8 8 4 4
     6) Updating the driver for my Intel Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6250 AGN and Intel Centrino(R) WIMAX 6250 from the Intel website previous having my laptop wiped clean in 2014.  It still did not resolve the issue.  My laptop
    manufacturer as not come up with an driver update for my adapter since 2010.  I haven't tried to update the adapter driver from Intel's website since having my laptop repaired due to the fact that Intel strongly recommending using the manufacturer's updates
    instead and frankly it didn't make much of a difference when I did it the first time.
     7) The last one I've tried as of today is going into Services and changing the start up type to automatic for the following:
           Computer Browser [changed from manual to automatic]
           DHCP Client [already set to automatic]
           DNS Client [already set to automatic]
           Network Connections [already set to automatic]
           Network Location Awareness [changed from manual to automatic]
           Remote Procedure Call (RPC) [already set to automatic]
           Server [already set to automatic]
           TCP/IP Netbios helper [already set to automatic]
           Workstation [already set to automatic]
    ...and I'm still having DNS issues.
    My only guessing are that my laptop came with a lemon adapter that needs to be replaced, some advanced setting(s) that I'm not aware off, or my firewall/anti-virus is interfering. I've used Symmantic Anti-virus and Firewall in the past and currently
    Avast Anti-Virus with Microsoft Network Firewall.  I've had DNS issues with both anti-virus/firewall set ups.
    Below are the results from the diagnostics and tests that I've ran.

  • Can't override DNS Server settings - can only append!

    See this thread for a similar question:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3555096
    I have also filed this with Apple (Problem ID 5159216). Here is the text of the report (with a few bits removed - not crucial to understanding the report).
    If anyone has suggestions/clues to resolve, please advise. Thanks!
    Summary:
    This problem concerns AirPort Extreme (802.11n) at revision 7.1. I will summarize with a comparison between AirPort and MacOS X.
    MacOS X and Airport Extreme (referred herein as "AE") both permit editing of DNS server settings whether in DHCP or Manual mode.
    When MacOS X DNS server settings are set manually by the end-user, the new server IPs are used (good). When AE's DNS server settings are overridden by the end-user, the new server IPs are NOT used (not good)! Rather, the DHCP-supplied DNS server always pre-empts whatever is given in the AE Configuration UI.
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Using AirPort Extreme (802.11n) at revision 7.1 and MacOS 10.4.9 on a MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo). The AE has been previously configured for IPv4 using DHCP and the MacBook is successfully connected and resolving domain names through the AE.
    2. Visit "Apple Menu > Location > Network Settings" and check the AirPort TCP/IP settings. For purposes of this test, make sure the "DNS Servers" field is EMPTY so MacOS X defaults to the AE's DNS settings, then close System Preferences.
    3. Run "AirPort Utility" (the newer version, not "Airport Admin Utility") and configure the AE under test. Pick the "Internet" icon in the toolbar and note the Internet Connection settings.
    4. In this test, Configure IPv4 is set to "DHCP" and the DNS Server(s) field contains two DNS IPs assigned by the Internet Service Provider. In my case that's Cablevision's Optimum Online service. You may or may not see IP addresses here, but in my case they are visible.
    5. As the DNS Server(s) are editable, and they both show ISP-supplied addresses, they can be changed to whatever alternate IPs you wish. For instance, change them to these alternate DNS IPs from OpenDNS.com: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. (You could use any alternate set of IPs but for the purpose of this test use the OpenDNS IPs.) Update the AE and restart.
    (For additional reference, http://www.opendns.com/start/airport.php shows instructions for the older AirPort Admin Utility, but the concept is exactly the same.)
    6. Normally you shouldn't have to restart the MacBook Pro since we're just using the AE settings, but go ahead and do that just to be consistent with this test.
    Expected Results:
    Now for the moment of truth! We want to verify that we're using the OpenDNS IPs for our DNS Servers. One nice feature OpenDNS has is automagic redirection for certain domain name typos.
    Here's an example. Drop to shell (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and try this command (excluding the $ prompt, natch):
    $ dig craigslist.og
    The "og" typo is deliberate. We really want to go to craigslist.org. If you're using the new OpenDNS IPs, you will STILL get an Address (A) record with an IP like so:
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    craigslist.og. 0 IN A 208.69.32.130
    If you had entered "craigslist.og" in Safari, you would end up at 208.69.32.130 (an OpenDNS server) and then redirected to craigslist.org.
    Actual Results:
    Alas, that's not what happens! Instead, you get NO IP address, like so:
    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;craigslist.og. IN A
    This means we're not actually using the OpenDNS IPs. What's happening?
    To find out, I spoke with the AirPort support group (Case # xxx-xxx-xx). I learned that, despite being allowed to edit and override the IP addresses provided via DHCP, the AE still uses the DHCP-provided DNS server if available.
    Again, the user interface suggests that I'm allowed to override the DHCP-provided DNS IPs as shown in the UI. Even though I can do this, the AirPort will still keep note of any DHCP-provided DNS Server IPs and use those first.
    True, I can switch to Manual network settings (and then my own DNS Server IPs take effect). Of course this is problematic when the ISP renews my IP address (which it does from time to time).
    Another workaround is to use the "DNS Servers" settings noted in step 2 (above). However this is also problematic if I want to keep my network settings simple. It requires a "Home Network" location and an "Office" location. Still not preferable, but it's a workaround.
    Regression:
    n/a
    Notes:
    I would like AirPort's DNS settings to be overridden in the same way OS X allows DNS settings to be overridden. The user interfaces suggest this is possible but it is not. It's only possible in the OS X case. Having the same flexibility on the AirPort would be most welcome.

    Afraid of the answer...sheesh...you must be a child. This has nothing to do with masquerading anything. The issue being discussed here is that people want to manually assign a dns server address via the new AEBS, while maintaining DHCP for IP address assignments through their ISP. For example, I would like to have opendns.com take care of all dns addressing at the router level, even though I have "Configure IPv4" set to "Using DHCP". If you do not understand why one would want to use something like opendns.com, please visit their website and enlighten yourself. The fact that the dns server address fields are editable when set to "Using DHCP" leads one to believe that you can manually assign a dns server in this configuration; however, under firmware 7.1.1, you still cannot. The previous iteration of the airport hardware can do it, as can nearly any router you pull off the shelf. In addition, this is something that can easily be done at the individual-computer level in OS X; however, many people would prefer to administer their network at the router level. That is the issue being discussed here. Either you can't read or you are purposely derailing the thread.

  • Mail, iCal Server and iChat server will not work over VPN

    I have an Airport Extreme Base Station at the office running the network. Behind it sits a Mac Mini Snow Leopard server running 10.6.3. The ports necessary for Mail, iCal Server and iChat work fine through that external connection. I can also connect with VPN from my 10.6.3 clients.
    HOWEVER, when I connect with the VPN clients, I am suddenly unable to access the Mail, iCal Server, Wiki server and iChat server. All connections time out. I can ping the server and I can do other things that do NOT work on the public Airport like ssh or VNC. ssh and VNC are closed at the airport extreme.
    So it's pretty odd. When I'm connected via the VPN, all ports that are forwarded to the Snow Leopard server time out over the VPN.
    I've tried various and sundry configurations with the VPN client. This includes trying to send all traffic over the VPN, moving it up in the service order, etc. etc. Nothing fixes it. DNS resolution is working fine, however when I do a wireshark capture of ppp0 traffic, I notice that SSL and TLSv1 handshakes appear to occur on the public IP address instead of the private network IP address... and they're all resets.
    Has anyone gotten this to work successfully? Like I said, all ports that are NOT forwarded through the Airport work fine over the VPN, but will not work when connected to the VPN. It's really bizarre.

    New data: any ports that are normally forwarded on the Airport Extreme to the Mac Mini server will not work when connected to the VPN.
    For instance, if I have imaps/993 forwarded from the Airport Extreme to the Mac Mini, it works fine over the Internet. If I connect to the VPN, I can connect to all OTHER services on the Mac Mini, but Mail, for instance, will not work.

  • Apple 10.4 managed clients dock settings not working

    I  have an issues with  3 or 4 of my 10.4 clients all are managed by WGM on an apple 10.5 server.  The I have managed dock settings on all apple clients are getting the proper dock settings however I have 3 or 4 clients that are not.  The clients that are not getting the dock settings are in the correct computer group.  And I don't see any of the clients dedicated in the computer group.  And suggestions or tips would be welcome help.

    THAT WORKED and all is back to normal.
    By the way I did not lose any of the icons on my dock either. All the apps light up under the icon and they now mimimize correctly!!

    Try deleting com.apple.dock.plist from the preference folder located in your user Library.
    You can open the hidden library in Finder's menubar,  Finder > Go > hold the option key down > select Library.
    Edit: you'll have to add back program icons to the dock that you moved there.

  • Known Issue: "DNS server could not be reached" when creating or updating a RemoteApp collection using template images for some locales

    When trying to create or update Azure RemoteApp collections that use a template image for some non-EN-US locales, it might fail with error "DNS server could not be reached". You might also see error code "DnsNotReachable".

    Cause:  There was a issue in Azure in which decimal punctuation was not treated properly if the locale of the template image used a comma (,) instead of a period (.).
    Workaround:  Before a fix was applied, the workaround was to use template images based on a locale that uses a period to delimit decimals, such as EN-US.
    Resolution:  As of March 19, 2015, a fix for this issue has been applied to Azure. You should once again be able to create collections from template images that use non-EN-US locales. If you continue to have this problem, please
    try the workaround. If that works and the only difference in the template images is the locale, please email remoteappforum (at Microsoft). If the workaround does not work, the issue is likely caused by a DNS configuration issue such as:
    No valid forwarders to public DNS servers configured on your internal DNS server(s).
    A valid internal DNS server is not specified on your Azure RemoteApp VNet.
    A VNet or internal network configuration issue is preventing the internal DNS servers from be reached by the VMs in the RemoteApp collection.

  • Silverlight 5 binding on a property with logic in its setter does not work as expected when debug is attached

    My problem is pretty easy to reproduce.
    I created a project from scratch with a view model.
    As you can see in the setter of "Age" property I have a simple logic.
        public class MainViewModel : INotifyPropertyChanged
                public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged;
                private int age;
                public int Age
                    get
                        return age;
                    set
                        /*Age has to be over 18* - a simple condition in the setter*/
                        age = value;
                        if(age <= 18)
                            age = 18;
                        OnPropertyChanged("Age");
                public MainViewModel(int age)
                    this.Age = age;
                private void OnPropertyChanged(string propertyName)
                    if (this.PropertyChanged != null)
                        PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName));
    In the MainPage.xaml
         <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White">
                <TextBox
                    Text="{Binding Path=Age, Mode=TwoWay}"
                    HorizontalAlignment="Left"
                    Width="100"
                    Height="25"/>
                <TextBlock
                    Text="{Binding Path=Age, Mode=OneWay}"
                    HorizontalAlignment="Right"
                    Width="100"
                    Height="25"/>
            </Grid>
    And MainPage.xaml.cs I simply instantiate the view model and set it as a DataContext.
        public partial class MainPage : UserControl
            private MainViewModel mvm;
            public MainPage()
                InitializeComponent();
                mvm = new MainViewModel(20);
                this.DataContext = mvm;
    I expect that this code will limit set the Age to 18 if the value entered in the TextBox is lower than 18.
    Scenario: Insert into TextBox the value "5" and press tab (for the binding the take effect, TextBox needs to lose the focus)
    Case 1: Debugger is attached =>
    TextBox value will be "5" and TextBlock value will be "18" as expected. - WRONG
    Case 2: Debugger is NOT attached =>
    TextBox value will be "18" and TextBlock value will be "18" - CORRECT
    It seems that when debugger is attached the binding does not work as expected on the object that triggered the update of the property value. This happens only if the property to which we are binding has some logic into the setter or getter.
    Has something changed in SL5 and logic in setters is not allowed anymore?
    Configuration:
    VisualStudio 2010 SP1
    SL 5 Tools 5.1.30214.0
    SL5 sdk 5.0.61118.0
    IE 10
    Thanks!

    Inputting the value and changing it straight away is relatively rare.
    Very few people are now using Silverlight because it's kind of deprecated...
    This is why nobody has reported this.
    I certainly never noticed this problem and I have a number of live Silverlight systems out there.
    Some of which are huge.
    If you want a "fix":
    private void OnPropertyChanged(string propertyName)
    if (this.PropertyChanged != null)
    //PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName));
    Storyboard sb = new Storyboard();
    sb.Duration = new Duration(new TimeSpan(0, 0, 0, 0, 100));
    sb.Completed += delegate
    PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName));
    sb.Begin();
    The fact this works is interesting because (I think ) it means the textbox can't be updated at the point the propertychanged is raised.

    I updated iTunes to 10.5 and now in my Netgear Stora iTunes server is not working anymore.
    Configuration: OSX Lion with Server, iTunes 10.5, latest firmware for the Stora.
    Can this be confirmed to be a bug introduced with 10.5 ?
    I also saw some people mentioning the same problem on Synology NAS.
    Seems like the 10.5 uodate broke something.

    Definitely seems to be a cross-platform bug in iTunes 10.5 concerning all NAS disks. Shared libraries on network drives worked fine under 10.4.1, but now there is just an endless loading cycle with no error message or time-out. There is a bit more about it in this thread.
