DNS Settings Time Capsule

I am trying to configure DNS setiings on my Time Machine so that I can use OpenDNS however the settings are fixed and greyed out so cannot be changed. There is an option to configure IPv6 settings however Open DNS does not support content filtering for IPv6 ?

the settings are fixed and greyed out so cannot be changed.
Yes, they can if you are asking about AirPort Utility. You are likely trying to position your cursor at the end the current setting and backspace to delete. That will not work.
Position your cursor at the beginning of the current DNS value and simply start typing. The numbers that you enter will overwrite the values that are "greyed out"

How do I change security setting on my Time Capsule WiFi?

Changing security settings on the Time Capsule Wi-Fi will lower the level of security.
If this is what you want to do...and assuming that your Mac is running Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utillity
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the small window
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the window
Wireless Security settings can be adjusted here
Click Update to save any changes

  • Time Capsule and IPhone 4 802.11 n 2,4GHZ issue

    Hi,
I was trying to connect all my devices to the best signal I am broadcasting: The IPAD, also the AppleTV and all Macs go automatically to the n network (5 GHZ) which is exactly what I want. The IPod is the only device with b/g capability which connects to the 2,4GHZ network well. There is only one problem with the IPhone 4, which never connects with the n 2,4GHZ network when the radio setting is set to 802.11 n only (5 GHZ) - 802.11 b/g/n. I was trying to change the radio band several times but either the IPod was not connected or the IPhone 4 was just b/g. If I set it to 802.11 n only (5 GHZ) - 802.11 n only (2,4 GHZ) it works for the IPhone but the IPod Touch is then excluded from the entire network.
I did several resets to my complete network and all devices, I have changed channels to manual and back - no effect. Is there a setting which works for all? Like 802.11 n only (5 GHZ) - 802.11 b/g/n (2,4 GHZ)? Please let me know.
I know it doesn't belong here but I have still another issue with the strict NAT for my XBOX 360. Do you have there any new solutions?
Many thanks for reading my post! Greetings from Holland.

  • Back To My Mac to a Time Capsule through a 3Com Router not working

I have a Mac Book Pro (10.5.7), Time Capsule (7.4.1), 3Com Office Connect Wireless Router (3CRWDR101A-75), a trial subscription to Mobile Me and a 2.5G iPhone (2.2.1).
I have been unable to get BTTM from my Mac on a remote wireless connection to my Time Capsule working - hence this post.
The set up of the Time Capsule was quite straightforward (as I would have expected from Apple) and I quickly established local and remote iCal / Address Book sync between my Mac, www.me.com and my iPhone. I have enabled and am the 2.4 and 5GHz bands on the Time Capsule and the wireless air interface on the 3Com router has been turned off. All of internet and email services on my Mac work well locally and Time Machine work. So far so good.
However, I am unable to 'see' my Time Capsule in Finder from any WiFi network that is not my home network. When at home I have full access to Time Capsule's disk.
My 3Com Office Router 3CRWDR101A-75 is not on the list of supported routers (nor is any other 3Com Router) but it does provide UPnP and NAT as required according to Mobile Sync notes including http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1552 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1552. Despite my best efforts, I have been unable to find out from Apple's MobileMe support if there are any minimum requirements for any router to work with Back To My Mac so can't check to see if my 3Com router will ever work with BTTM or not.
Does anyone have any similar experience with setting up a 3Com Office Connect router to work with Back to My Mac?
Do I need to check / Can I check if my Time Capsule has been registered with the Mobile Me servers?
Do I need to enable any specific ports on my 3Com Office Connect router?
    Basic settings:
Time Capsule: green light - all OK
AirPort Utility>Internet: Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
AirPort Utility>Advanced>Mobile me: account set up
AirPort Utility>Advanced>IPv6: IPv6 mode = Node, at the request of Apple Mobile Me support
System Preferences>Mobile Me>BackToMy Mac: On (green light).
3Com Office Connect Router: DCHP server: On
3Com Office Connect Router: Firewall level: High (default)
3Com Office Connect Router: Disable NAT: Off (default)
3Com Office Connect Router: Enable Universal Plug & Play: On
3Com Office Connect Router: Enable IPSEC-NAT pass through: ON, at the request of Apple Mobile me support
Com Office Connect Router: DMZ: enable 1-to-1 NAT: Off (default)
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Quick update on troubleshooting BTTM (or rather Back To My Time Capsule)...
Surprising;y, no 3Com products listed in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1304. 3Com tech support stated that no OfficeConnect products have been qualified against BTTM and my specific router does not support IPv6 over IPv4 encapsulation.
MobileMe support were not able to help, citing the fact that I had an unsupported router.
I have made no change to my modem/router config since first posted but since an upgrade of my TC to 7.4.2 I have been able to use BTTM with my TC (bridge mode) and my OfficeConnect modem/router (802.11b WiFi disabled).
I have made limited testing from other remote locations from my MBP and also proved that it worked over a 3G/UMTS connection on the UK's 02 network also
MobileMe still reporting uPnP / NAT problem on my MBP when working remotely though.
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9733258 confirms that this has been solved and, apart from the anomalous Mobileme status message, I can agree.
Good news so now do not need to swap out my 3Com router. Also shows that this 3Com product does meet BTTM connectivity requirements.

  • VPN / DNS Settings on Time Capsule

    Afternoon Board!
I've recently appled up after my Samsung died.  Got myself a 13" Macbook Pro and a 3TB Time Capsule for the wireless.   I'm based out in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and the internet is heavily censored along with not being able to download UK content for my Xbox360.
I get round the internet censorship by using a VPN (Overplay.net), however I've recently read that it's possible to sack the VPN completely if I play around with the DNS settings.  The VPN also heavily throttles the internet speed (we god own from 16mb/s to around 3mb/s when using the VPN)
I'd prefer to do this on the Time Capsule itself, since then any other device using the Time Capsue (our mobiles, Ipads, Xbox, Apple TV etc), would then automatically be able to use the interweb as if based in the UK.
However, I have no idea where to start with this, and would really appreciate any help you could provide.
    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

Did you try changing the dns directly in the aztech.. that is the easiest way.
You must be using it as a router.
Change the primary dns server for whatever dns service you want to use.
The TC is then in bridge mode.
Is your TC the latest AC wireless version?
If so you might find you are stuck.. I fixed up an earlier version TC to give the right DNS to clients for watching overseas TV but that is using the v5 utility. Since this is now not possible in the latest TC you might be stuck.. do you have a PC in the network.. you might find you can change it using the 5.6.1 utility from windows.. but I do not have latest version TC to check.

  • What DNS settings to use in server setup with a time capsule

I have a mac mini and am to install leopard server on it for our office.
i think the standard install is for me...small business needing filesharing and vpn access only. We have outsourced exchange which i'm probably going to keep, and also an outsourced web server.
I had a trial run at install and came across some problems (clients couldn't use vpn or ichat) so thought I better check my assumptions with you experts!
i presume DHCP will be run by the time capsule, and 5 or 6 macbooks will share the broadband connection. Got to the 'Network address pane' and it had an IP and subnet assigned by the time capsule (10.0.2.2, 255.255.255.0).
I clicked next and got the 'network names' pane...maybe this is where i went wrong...I set primary DNS name as macserver.[mycompany].com and the computer name as Mac Server.
I went through the rest of the set up...added some users and file sharing is all work fine. Client machines auto set up via directory utility
    PROBLEMS:
iChat says it cannot connect due to mac server ...something to do with ssl
    VPN says internet connection problem
i can access internet from clients and server machine; can file share no problem.
There is something obvious that I am missing...

iChat says it cannot connect due to mac server ...something to do with ssl
It would help if you quoted the actual error message, rather than some vague reference.
The chances are it's complaining about the SSL certificate that the server is using - it probably doesn't match the server name. There are many reasons for this, but the upshot is that you need an SSL certificate that is valid for the hostname that users use to connect to the server with.
So if you're using 'ichat.mycompany.com' as your iChat server name, you will need a SSL certificate for 'ichat.mycompany.com'. Or you'll need to turn off SSL.
You can manage SSL certificates via Server Admin.
    VPN says internet connection problem
I assume this is remote clients trying to connect to the server, right?
Have you setup all the port forwarding rules in the router to allow incoming VPN connections to get routed to the server?

  • Time Capsule DNS settings

    HI,
I have a Time Capsule as my wireless router. When I set it up I ended up having to manually set my DNS numbers in order to make the connection work- it works fine, but I have to manually enter the DNS number into anyone who visits my house with a computer or iPhone etc. Why is it that I have to manually configure and is there any way to have it just connect after entering the password?
    Thanks!

What DNS address is the TC getting from the ISP?? Is it a valid address?
What DNS address is the TC allocating if any? It should simply allocate itself. But if the TC itself doesn't have a valid DNS it cannot resolve name to IP.

  • DNS is wrong on vista pc so Internet does not work but works with iMac iPad PS3 using time capsule 1355...can not change settings on the pc vista..

I Hooked up time capsule ..set all the passwords.  Works with iMac and iPad and PS3 . But vista say it needs to reset adapters. But does not work..show dlink router setting even though dlink is not connected. And has a different code...help

Is Vista computer running wireless or ethernet?
Is it plugged directly into the TC? If it is possible and you are running wireless please do plug it by ethernet directly into the TC to test.
Wireless is known problematic on Vista.. has always been so.
Is IP statically set on the vista computer??

    Hi everyone,
I just bought a new AirPort Express and Comcast is my ISP. I ditched my old Belkin wireless router, connected the Comcast modem directly to my AirPort Express, and it appears to be working great. I can access the internet wirelessly and also play music using AirPlay through my stereo speakers.
However, when I open the AirPort Utility, the utility tells me that I have two problems with my AirPort Express:
Apparently I have no internet connection (the utility tells me that "Your AirPort base station does not have a valid IP address."), even though I can access the internet just fine.
I don't appear to have any DNS server addresses (the utility tells me that "This AirPort base station doesn't have any DNS server addresses and might have trouble connecting to the internet.")
Does anyone know if these are serious problems that I need to address, or can they be ignored? I don't want to start tinkering with the AirPort Express's settings until I am better informed, because right now everything is working as far as my access to the internet is concerned.

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.
BUT NOTHING IT STILL SHOWS NO INTERNET CONNECTON  on my capsule and NO DNS SERVER ...
I have tried to HARD RESET it resets ( with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN) and it connects to internet, it also says setuo complete in airport utility but once I go back into Airport utily cause Time capsule is still flashing amber it says NO INTERNET CONNECTION and NO DNS SERVER ...
anyone has any suggestions PLEASE and Thank you

Check the Ethernet connection to the AirPort Express. Make sure that the Ethernet connection from the Comcast modem is connected to the WAN port on the back of the AirPort Express. The WAN port is the one with the circle of dots shown over the port.
It sounds like you are connected to the Ethernet LAN port.

  • DNS Issues with Time Capsule - DNS Proxy periodically dies

hi all .... looking for some suggestions
I have a time capsule 1TB, connected to a linksys adsl modem in bridge mode, with the TC acting as DHCP server for my local clients. In the PPPoE settings I also enter the primary and secondary addresses for DNS that my ISP supplied.
I am able to successfully connect to the internet, and all clients successfully pick up an IP address, and each client picks up the TC as the DNS proxy. Everything works perfectly as it should.
Usually once per day, there seems to be a slight hickup with the internet connection (hard to tell whether I am losing the PPPoE or some other issue). When this happens, the PPPoE connection remains active, as I am able to access anything on the internet from an IP level. However, the DNS proxy service on the TC seems to die and as a result, all internet browsing fails. If I reboot the TC, everything comes back to normal. If I dont reboot, the only way to get browsing working is to manually enter the DNS IP address from ISP into the client PCs. However, this is a manual fix that I should not have to perform.
Looking for advice and guidance. Seems like a bug but I cant tell. If I was able to set the DHCP server to pass out the ISP supplied addresses that would also work, but I cant.

Just got off the phone with support for this very same problem. DNS Proxy is definitely dying in the TC, looks like a firmware issue to me.
This is the 3rd TC I'm on. First was a 500GB, had this problem, replaced it under warranty at Apple's direction, replacement did the same, just upgraded this weekend to 1GB, and same issue still. All on 7.3.2 firmware.
TC 1TB, PPPoE to my ISP, ISP's DNS Servers listed in the PPPoE config in the TC.
When a host gets DHCP from the TC the only DNS returned is the TC itself, since it proxies the ISP DNS servers.
Once every day or two, the DNS proxy dies. local network works, and I can add my ISP's DNS addresses in my host config and I have DNS again, but this is definitely something dying in the DNS proxy in the TC.
Just for kicks trying to switch from my ISP's DNS servers to OpenDNS now since someone said that worked for them, but I am not hopeful... I don't see this as a host DNS issues at all.
The dead proxy is very clear:
    $ nslookup apple.com. 192.168.1.1 # that's the TC
    Server: 192.168.1.1
    Address: 192.168.1.1#53
    ** server can't find apple.com: SERVFAIL
    $ nslookup apple.com. 208.67.222.222 # that's OpenDNS
    Server: 208.67.222.222
    Address: 208.67.222.222#53
    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: apple.com
    Address: 17.149.160.49
I replaced a linksys router with the TC and am kind of unhappy that a $500 router dies every couple of days. My cheapo Linksys router never needed to be restarted, it only ever got rebooted once every year or so when the house lost power long enough for the UPS to run out of battery.
Help us out here Apple, I replaced a $50 router with a $500 because I like the flavor of your kool aid, and this thing dies every day or two. Even if you can't fix why the proxy is dying every couple of days, can you please at least update the firmware to maybe restart the proxy if it quits working?

  • Time Capsule - No DNS servers and Double NAT

I'm connecting an MBP running 10.5.6 to a Time Capsule which accesses Virgin Media broadband using a cable modem.
It has been working fine for 6 months, but I made some changes this morning to get my wireless camera onto the network, which broke the connection, and don't seem to be able to undo them.
The TC now flashes amber, and going into Airport Utility I get the following errors:
    - No DNS Servers
    - Double NAT
I've typed the DNS servers' IP addresses for my ISP into Airport Utility but it doesn't seem to recognise them. It also complains about a double NAT problem but I don't have another router assigning IP addresses.
I've also tried a hard reset on the TC, switched it and the modem off, waited 30 mins and then switched back on again - no luck.
Screenshots of all the settings on my TC from Airport Utility are here:
    http://web.me.com/julianlove/Site/TimeCapsule.html
I'm not very knowledgeable about networking so any assistance appreciated.

Double NAT is an indication that you have two devices on the network both trying to perform routing duties. You only want one device doing this on a network. Solve the NAT issue and the DNS issue will go away as well.
What is the make and model number of the device that you call your "modem"?

  • Guest network feature of Time Capsule/Airport Extreme in conflict with DNS on OS X Server?

Hi, I want use the guest network feature of Time Capsule/Airport Extreme which requires an external DNS server but my OS X Server is the dns server...Can I configure server and airport with an external dns without messing up my OS server?
    Thx Ron

If you want to use the guest network while also using your server for DNS - you will need to do the following:  It's a bit painful - but it works.
On your Airport Device (Airport Extreme or Time Capsule) - in the Internet tab you will need to do one of the following:
    1)  Leave the DNS Servers Blank - which they will default to the DNS servers provided by your ISP.
    2)  Actually enter your ISP's DNS servers.
    3)  Enter Open DNS servers (I use 208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220).
The DNS servers specified in the airport device must be internet routable addresses (if you are going to use the guest network functionality) - and cannot refer to private ip address (e.g. 10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x, etc).
Here is the painful part...on all of the devices (Macs, PCs, phones, ipads - that will be used on your "private" network 10.0.1.x - you will need to provide static DNS setting (but still allow DHCP to assign the devices IP address).  You will specify 10.0.1.13 as primary DNS and 208.267.222.222 (or your ISP's primary DNS IP).
One you do this - your devices that you permanently use on your local network - will still use your server for DNS - and the external DNS - should your DNS server happen to be down.
Anyone visiting your house - will connect to your guest network - and automatically be DHCP assigned a guest IP address - and the external DNS servers that you specified in the Airport Extreme device.
This has been working great for me.  I suspect that the guest network functionality is flawed in the Airport Extreme/Express and Time Capsule.  Since I do not have another router that provides a guest network - I cannot say whether this issues is limited to the Airport devices - or whether this workaround would need to be done - regardless of which brand of router is providing the guest network.
In a nutshell - your household permanent devices will have to specify static DNS servers - but your guests will connect seamlessly without having to change and risk messing up any of their device settings.
