DNS : simple internal network, no router. Doesn't work

Ok. Here is the deal. I've read many articles (including the excellent one from the famous MrHoffman) but I'm stuck. No documentation really deals with my situation.
I have a MacMini with 10.6 Server for a local network. I don't want an internet connection on it. I have a network switch and that's it. I just need a few machines to connect to this super local network (with DNS).
Server IP settings (manual)
IP : 10.0.0.11
Mask : 255.255.255.0
Router : void
DNS : 10.0.0.11 (i've tried with 127.0.0.1... same)
Domains : training
I have a primary DNS zone "training" with this server in it (and I remove the server original one after the installation). The nameserver is also set with the IP address (like recommended wisely by MrHoffman). The changeip command is a success. Network Utility lookups (direct and reverse) are fine.
But... when I plug another machine in the switch with a manual IP (let's say 10.0.0.200), 255.255.255.0, no router, dns=10.0.0.11, domain = training : I can ping the server (obviously) but lookups DON'T work.
I really don't understand. That's the simplest setup ever (2 machines and 1 switch) and DNS is not active...
So... any idea about what I forgot ?

So that I may update the web site article, why do you think what I've posted isn't this case and this configuration?
I'd expect hostname.training. as an FQDN here, if you're inventing your own domain, and thus your zone would be training (training.) for that.
The usual trigger for the failure you're describing here is that your client isn't using your DNS server for its DNS resolution; that your client is getting its DNS server address from your DHCP server (often embedded within a firewall) and your firewall (or whatever is providing DHCP server) isn't configured to pass out your new DNS server address. Or it is, and your client hasn't picked up the change yet.
To test this guess, check the controller settings for the DNS server setting, and try a command-level dig command:
dig @10.0.0.11 hostname.training

WRT54G & XBOX 360 Wireless Networking Adapter-Router doesn't see my SSID

I purchased a XBOX 360 networking adapter yesterday. I hooked it up and serched for networks and it doesn't see my SSID through the linksys router. Before I purchased the 360 adapter, I could hard hook it to the router and it worked fine. I called 360 and they suggested that I open my MAC on the Linksys Router so that it would recognize it, but I do not know how to do that. SSID Broadcast should be Enabled on your router...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop).In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab-
Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...SSID Broadcast should be Enabled...Check what is your SSID(change the SSID if it is Linksys)...Click Save Settings if you have changed anything...
Click on the subtab Wireless Security, if the Security Mode is WPA/WPA2 change it to WEP, if it is WEP take not of Key1(this is your wireless security)...
X-Box Setting :
1. Connect the appropriate wireless network adapter to the console. On the Xbox, a Wi-Fi adapter that connects to the Ethernet port (sometimes also called a wireless network bridge) must be used. Alternatively, the Xbox 360 is also designed to work with certain Wi-Fi game adapters that connect to a USB port.
2. Turn on the console and navigate to the wireless settings screen. On the Xbox, the menu path is "Settings -> Network Settings -> Advanced -> Wireless -> Settings" On the Xbox 360, the menu path is "System -> Network Settings -> Edit Settings."
3. Set the SSID (network name) on the Xbox to match that of the wireless router. If your wireless router has enabled SSID broadcast, the SSID name should appear pre-selected on the Xbox display. Otherwise, select the "Specify Unlisted Network" option and enter the SSID there.
4. Specify "Infrastructure" as the Network Mode. (Infrastructure is the mode used by wireless routers.)
5. Set the Security Type to match that of the wireless router. If your router uses WPA encryption and the type of adapter connected to the Xbox does not support WPA, you will need to change your router settings to use WEP encryption instead.
Note that the standard Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter supports WPA while the standard Microsoft Xbox Wireless Adapter (MN-740) only supports WEP.
6. Save your settings and verify the network is functional.
On the Xbox, the Wireless Status screen displays whether a connection has successfully been made with the wireless router, and the Connect Status screen displays whether a connection has successfully been made through the Internet to Xbox Live.
On the Xbox 360, use the "Test Xbox Live Connection" option instead.

EA4500 guest network re-authentication doesn't work

I have successfully set up a guest network on my EA4500. Guest laptop associates with guest SSID just fine. Then via IE, it gets prompted for the guest password, which is entered and accepted just fine. At this point guest laptop is on the network. Hooray!
BUT... at some point the guest laptop will need to reauthenticate (I don't know what the timeout is, but maybe one or two days?). Anyway, it's at this point that IE presents the guest network login page. But now after typing in the password, "enter" or clicking on the button does nothing. It looks like the guest web page doesn't get loaded properly or completely, so the reauthentication can't complete, therefore can't get to the internet. So, while in this state, I've also tried Firefox and Chrome, and same thing, no action when trying to submit the guest password. Tried rebooting guest laptop, and still same problem. Only thing I've found so far that works is to reboot the router. So I'm guessing there's a problem with the guest/web server on the router?? It's a real pain to have to reboot the router every day or two, when I've had other Linksys routers run for months without having to touch them.
I was running CCC 2.1.38 when I first noticed the problem. Since then I've downgraded to Classic 2.0.37, but it seems I still have the same problem. Again, I can connect & authenticate just fine initially, but when reprompted after some period of time, it doesn't work.
I've tried contacting Cisco support, but it looks like I'm at 91 days since purchase and thus outside of my 90-day complimentary support, so they happily provided me with the premium support options just to have the honor of talking with them. Guess I shouldn't have spent so much time trying to figure this out myself.
I've searched the forums here,but so far haven't found any answers (I do see posts where the guest web page isn't presented at all, but in my case the page is presented, just can't do anything). Anyone seen this or have any ideas?

jaymay -- I agree there's no harm in a reset; just the time to reconfigure, reenter DHCP reservations, etc. I'll keep this as an option as I troubleshoot, but see next...
TEXXSHARKK -- good news/bad news ... I ended up not yet resetting. Instead, since I had this problem first with CCC firmware 2.1.38 (Build 138828 - the automatically pushed update), I reverted back to Classic 2.0.37. Still same problem with guest re-authentication. Only workaround was to reboot the router. That's when I first posted.
So, since I had the problem with both CCC and Classic firmware, I ended up going back to CCC. To do that, I needed to manually update, which is 2.1.38 (Build 138880 for web manual download only). SInce (re)updating the firmware, I haven't had a repeat of the original problem. It's been about a week now, and the guest laptop has gone through a number of re-authentications, all without problem. For continued troubleshooting, I've been periodically connecting my iPad, BlackBerry, etc, to the guest network, and they get through the authentication page just fine as well. So that's the good news in that the problem "seems" to have gone away.
The bad news is that it's still unexplained:
- There's what I assume is a just a minor build difference between the two CCC firmwares, so it seems unlikely that would make a difference?
- Could be just the fact of reburning the firmware corrected whatever the problem was -- a la doing a reset, even though I didn't reconfigure, just firmware (re)update
- Could be the problem is still there biding its time, waiting for me to think it's forever gone, only to pounce again
If the problem does reappear, I'll update here.

Few things to check :
1. hope you are accessing the correct node of proxy structure and the correct message type too.
2.. If the occurrence of node is 1 to many than it will be a table type in that case your need to use a loop to access row values.
Make sure that you have used the correct message types for creating variables..

Simple drag&drop with handler doesn't work in Edge?

Hi all!
I made this very simple example of Drag&Drop in Edge: http://www.terredainventare.it/simpledrag/simpledrag.html using Jquery Ui http://docs.jquery.com/UI/Draggable.
I try to use the JQueryUi "handle" property that makes you drag an object restricting drag click on only one element but it doesn't work.
Here's the code I've put in Edge onCompositionReady:

Of course my two Div-elements are called "drag" and "handler". Now the drag works only on the "wrong" element and not on the "handle".....

Routing doesn't work in my C# code

Hi guys,
I'm trying to make routing from an old aspx-page to the new one using the following code:

This code dosen't work. But if I remove extension - url: "auto-vhd", it works fine. It also works fine for other pages' names, which don't contain special symbols, like '-'.
Does anyone knows the reason why the code doesn't work for url: "auto-vhd.aspx"? How can I fix it?

Router doesn't work for hi-speed cable

I have two MacBook Airs. I have one internet cable that comes out from the wall. I stick this in one of my MacBook Airs and I get high-speed internet (100 mbps) that way. It works fine.
Now, I bought a cheapish router in Korea, so that I can use internet on two computers.
I connected them up like this: I stuck the internet cable into the router (WAN socket) and then I attached the other two computers to the router using ethernet cables.
However, it doesn't work.
What do I have to do to get this to work.
I do not want to use wireless internet as it's too slow. I want to use cable internet.

I think I could have done something wrong as the router's manual was in Korean which I cannot understand very well. I don't know whether it was the router or it was me. Anyway, I returned it and got another router.
I got Netgear-- I couldn't find D-Link in Seoul--and the computer runs well on the router now. However, the website that automatically came up was in Korean and I had to struggle a bit trying different things not knowing what the website was telling me what to do. After about a couple of hours, I got everything to work. So even though the router is made by a western company, because I am in Korea, the Korean language website will automatically come up, as this is the default website and there is nothing I can do about it.
I DID get the website address for Netgear for English-speaking users but it was only support, it wasn't the website that you log into to connect your router.

Internal microphone Pavilion 9760 doesn't work

After upgrading to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, the internal microphone doesn't work. In Configuration Panel, Sound, tab Recordind it says: no devices are found. Speakers and webcam work perfectly. Seems like Windows can't see the mic. Anyone a solution?

Remove the battery and look in the compartment where the battery was installed. You should see a printed part number and a product name. Please post one or both of them (with all alphanumeric characters here).

WRT150N version 1.1 Router doesn't work with internet

I have a WRT150N version 1.1 and it has been working fine, but today it quit sending out the internet. My computer is still connected to the router but the internet doesn't come through even though the internet light on the router is still flashing. I have reset my modem and router many times with out any success. The only way I can connect to the internet is directly from the router, even when I plug into the router it doesn't work. Help!

As you have Resetted your Modem and Router, So now your Router is back to the Factory Defaults.... So in this case you need to re-configure all the settings back on your Router..

I work at a hospital and one of our patients has a macbook. We setup a wireless account for him and he connects fine (Sees cisco wap/gets correct ip address), but he can't get to anything. His email client hangs and Safari never connects to the web. I tried pinging, but even that doesn't work. Turning off the enthernet port didn't help. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Employing a descendent of the Action class that does not implement the perform() method while using the Struts 1.0 libraries. Struts 1.1 Action child classes started using execute() rather than perform(), but is backwards compatible and supports the perform() method. However, if you write an Action-descended class for Struts 1.1 with an execute() method and try to run it in Struts 1.0, you will get this "Document contained no data" error message in Netscape or a completely empty (no HTML whatsoever) page rendered in Microsoft Internet Explorer.

DNS for internal network and Firewall ports?

Hello,
I don't know were to begin, so I guess I'll start with my setup.
I have Mac OS X server 10.5.7 running DNS, Firewall, Mail, iChat, RADIUS, VPN, SMB. Behind an Airport Base Station in DMZ.
My DSN setup is just for the server and local clients. I'm also setup to forward my ISP DNS.
My question is do I need to open any ports in the firewall. I currently have my local subnet 172.16.4.x to allow all. The "Any" subnet to allow DNS outbound. Is this correct or am I creating a security risk?
I dont want the public to be able to use my DNS server. (I would like to ONLY allow my local network, and VPN users.)

I always recommend going with a hardware device (including the base station) over IPFW when running a server.
The main reason is that when you're running behind a NAT device (such as the AirPort Base Station), ALL incoming traffic is blocked unless you specifically enabled it via port forwarding. A positive security model.
In contrast, Mac OS X Server will open firewall ports based on the services you're running, without regard to whether that service should be publicly accessible or not.
You then have to go through the motions of securing each service to either block external traffic at the service level (e.g. by telling the application what addresses it can listen to), or at the network level (by configuring the firewall to block external access). This is a bad security model since each service is public by default and you have to go out of your way to secure it.
Also bear in mind that you might not think this is a problem today since you can just configure IPFW and be done, but what about next week? or next month? or next year when you add another service. Will you remember to reconfigure the firewall to secure it then?

Network connection sometines doesn't work (WPA or WEP)

Hi,
My Macbook is sometimes refusing to connect to my wireless network. When the problem occurs, my network is available and listed among all the other available networks. According to tools such as iStumbler, network strength is very good.
Basically, today I start my Macbook and I log in and usually it connects automatically to my default network. Tomorrow it doesn't connect anymore without even coming near to the network settings or even moving the location of my Macbook.
When the problem occurs, I don't have network problems on my iMac (which has identical network settings as my Macbook) or my second laptop (a Windows PC). Tools such as iStumbler show that my network is available and network strength is very good.
When manually forcing it to join the network (I simply select it in the list of all other networks that it detects) I get an error saying that it is unable to connect to the network. Clicking 'Try again' has no affect.
I narrowed the problem down to the security settings. When I'm having this problem and I turn off security on my wireless router (and I also turn it off on the Macbook), my Macbook connects instantly. When I turn security on again (WPA with a passphrase) I am unable to connect. Switching to WEP does not work. (no, it's not me making a typo in the passphrase)
After fiddling with it for a while (usually constantly disabling and enabling my wireless adapter again and again), my Macbook eventually joins the network again.
Yesterday it took me about 40 minutes, a point at which I was about ready to throw it down the stairs.
So I'm using a Philips wireless router and WPA security with a passphrase.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I now discovered that the security settings have no effect on the problem. I don't use any form of security for a while now and everything worked fine for a while. Then the problem occured again, for 2 days.

Wireless router doesn't work with Windows 8

Does anyone have experience with attempted installs of wireless routers using windows 8? I have tried to install three devices but they will not install for windows 8 and I can't find a single one that is. I don't need the internet just a router for my home wireless. Printer, mp3, etc. If you look at all of the Linksys specs online, none of them say they are compatible with windows 8 just up to 7. I have tried to install two Linksys routers and two Belkin routers and none of them will install due to windows 8 being my OS. I use a verizon hotspot for my 4g internet.

If other devices are connecting without any problem through the router then the problem might be on the new laptop. First thing that you can try is check if the laptop can detect other wireless networks. If it can, try connecting to the other network. If it’s able to connect then it must have something to do with the wireless settings of the router. If it can’t then the problem might be on the built in wireless card of that laptop. Before calling the laptop manufacturer though, you can still try changing a setting (channel) on the router and see if the windows 8 laptop will be able to connect. For instructions, refer to this link: Changing the Wireless Channel on a Linksys Router.
By the way, what is the model number of your router?
