DNS suffix of Computer Name

How do I determine the correct DNS suffix for my computer?
I am not networked to other computers, though I do access the internet.

Whats your os?
Here are instructions for XP Pro...
1. Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
The System Properties dialog box is displayed.
2. Select the Computer Name tab.
Review the value of the field Full computer name. If it contains a fully-qualified domain name for your computer, for example machinename.my.company.com, then your settings are complete. If the field is blank or incomplete, then continue to the next step.
3. Click Change (a button near the bottom of the displayed tab).
The Computer Name Changes dialog box is displayed.
4. Click More.
The DNS Suffix and NetBIOS Computer Name dialog box is displayed.
5. Type the correct DNS suffix in the field, Primary DNS suffix of this computer, and verify that the check box, Change primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes, is checked.

  • Find DNS suffix of computer on LAN

    Hi.
I have to look up a SRV record on our local network. To do the actual DNS lookups, I'm using the JNDI DnsContextFactory, and that part is working perfectly.
However, InetAddress.getLocalHost() returns a hostname which has no domain suffix, so I can't actually figure out which domain to query in the first place.
If I do a query for "_service._tcp" or ""_service._tcp.local.", I get nothing... it really needs the domain.
If I run "ipconfig" under Windows, I can see a list of DNS suffixes which are supposed to be search when doing lookups. Java obviously doesn't care about that list, but is there a way to get at those values from Java so that I can add the suffixes on manually?

To answer my own question (found this by scanning the Java source code...)
    import sun.net.dns.ResolverConfiguration;
    List<String> searchSuffixes = ResolverConfiguration.open().searchlist()
    for (String suffix : searchSuffixes) {
        // ... do lookup ...
    }

  • Dynamic DNS updates and issues with re-imaged / replaced machines with the same computer name

Our AD team gets asked frequently to delete bad DNS entries because a computer was replaced or VDI was re-created, and when it was joined to the domain it had the same computer name but different SID, so the DNS entry for that computer can no longer be updated
to a new IP address because the new computer doesn't have rights to update that object in DNS.
I recently saw a resolution to this was to set the security for DNS to allow updates from "Domain Computers" as described in the KB below.
    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2005210
Has anyone done this?  Any negative implications from this?
    Thanks

Granting all domain computers write access to all records in the dns zone does solve the problem. On the negative side, DNS security is reduced significantly. For example, any user with admin rights locally on his/her computer will be able to sabotage
services in your domain by deleting or changing host records of domain controllers, servers or other client computers.
A more secure solution in this case will be configuring DHCP servers to update DNS on behalf of the client and granting DHCP servers appropriate access to DNS zone. Take a look at
Configuring Secure Dynamic Update for more info.

  • Drive Map GPO and Item-Level targeting using DNS Computer Name not working as expected

I've run into a snag trying to move from logon script based drive mappings, to a GPO based Drive map solution and I'm hoping somebody can shed some light on the problem that I am seeing.  We started down the GPO based drive mappings because we have
a handful of Windows 8 client computers which don't run the logon script based drive mappings.
I put together a basic Drive Maps GPO.   I'm mapping 3 drives, I've linked the GPO to a computer container OU for testing and everything is working just fine.  I have 3 different Windows 8 client PC, all domain joined, and all 3 run the GPO as
    expected.
The problem is when I attempt to apply Item-level targeting.   I've found that if I define item-level targeting to use the NetBIOS name of the computer, I can either apply the GPO at an individual computer level, or I can exclude the GPO for that individual
computer by toggling between IS and IS NOT.   However, when I choose to define the computer name by choosing the DNS option, the GPO does not apply as expected.
So, if I say "the DNS computer name is example1.mydomain.com" and I apply the GPO, it applies to example1, example2 and example3.   And if I instead say, "the DNS computer name is not example1.mydomain.com", then it doesn't apply
to example1, example2 or example3.     Obviously, I would expect it to apply or not apply only to example1.mydomain.com.
If instead, I say "the NetBIOS computer name is example1", and apply the GPO, then example1 gets it, and example2 and example3 do not.   If I say, "the netBIOS name is not example 1", then example1 does NOT get the drive mapping,
but example 2 and example3 do.   < This is exactly what I want and I can continue to just use NetBIOS names...but I don't understand why DNS isn't working in the same manner.
My clients are all using DHCP and using domain controllers for DNS.   All 3 machines are in the mydomain.com namespace.  The mydomain.com namespace is an active directory integrated zone.   We have reverse zones in place for the dns records.
I can ping the machines from the DC's as well as the machines themselves.  I can run nslookup and resolve the computer name for each host using the FQDN.  I can also run a ping -a IP_ADDY and get the FQDN back.  The DC's themselves are
running Server 2008 R2.   I honestly don't see any issues from a name resolution standpoint on the network itself.
So, any suggestions as to why defining the shortened NetBIOS name works just fine, but using DNS with a FQDN does not?   (I've tried the DNS name using just the name, the name., as well as name.mydomain.com and name.mydomain.com.)

    And here is the result from a Windows 7 host,  which is named d2-7-user1...thus it should map the T drive and in fact does;

  • DNS Hostname & Computer Name

I work in a university/medical environment, with large amount machine on the network. I'm running into an issue with DNS names and Computer name being different.
    Example: Computer Name: div-001
    DNS Name: mm-Ughe
DNS name appears when i do a nslookup of the Ip that is assigned to machine by DHCP.
Our end goal is to be able to use VNC client to remote support the Mac computer via hostname across the university, which will entail different subnets.
Hope this make sense, and appreciate any help.

The question is, when you do the nslookup (or dig, as nslookup has been deprecated), what is the authoritative server? It's as simple a matter as putting the name you want in the hosts file of the authority. Except if you use DHCP. Then you need to look into services like yp (yellow pages) or NIS. If you don't want to go that path, don't use DHCP, assign static IP addresses.

  • Setting the DNS Suffix in Windows-2000:

This is a solution for the frequent problem that arises during installation of iPlanet Application Server on Windows-2000 platform.
<b>Problem:</b> After installation completes, the installation directory remains empty, there is no entry of iAS in "Windows start menu". It doesn't install anything.
    <b>Remedy:</b> Set the DNS Suffix.
    <b>Procedure:</b>
Right click on <b>My computer</b> (icon on desktop or in windows-explorer), then click on properties, go to <b>Network identification</b> Tab, Click on properties, then click the more button, set the <b>Primary DNS suffix</b> (like india.sun.com), and also check the <b>Change Primary DNS suffix when domain membership change</b> check box, click all Ok buttons.
    <b>Note:</b>
    1. Make sure that it is added to the windows registry:
Just run regedit and click on the <b>My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM \ControlSet001\Services \Tcpip\Parameters</b> key, you will see the <b>Domain</b> key value set to your domainname, otherwise enter the domain name into this key value, and than <b>reboot the m/c</b>, and than reinstall the iAS. It should work.
    2. Make sure you are using static IP address.

  • Computer name does not auto update in VMM console

The computer name is not updating in VMM console after the following.
    - Create VM from scratch, install VM additions, name "VM1"
    - Shutdown VM
    - Clone "VM1"
    - Sysprep clone
    - Rename clone to "VM2"
VMM does not recognize the new name even after a few VM reboots. I need to manually right click the VM and select refresh to get the new name to display.
Typically this wouldn't be a problem, but it causes an issue when trying to Remote Desktop from VMM console or from App Controller, the old name is still referenced and therefore tries to remote desktop into old name instead of the new name.
    Anyone encounter this?

Welcome to the discussions! (post #1 and all)
    <pre>hostname -s</pre>
This command is the best way to get the short name of the machine with the DNS suffix stripped away.
Do make sure you click edit in the sharing system preferences to make sure the Local Hostname is truly set and not using the dynamic global host name.
I recall having to change this a while back and am not sure what the default state is for the fields in the Edit... dialog.

  • DNS Suffixes

Is statement below true ? I can't find any information relating to the
maximum search entries you can define that is feasible, whether its
    thru GPO or connection-specific settings.
"The DNS suffix search list can only contain a list that
can be searched in a maximum of 12 seconds, this translates to
around 10 entries. Anything more than that will result in failed name resolution
unless WINS is still being used. "
    Regards,

Do not configure DNS suffix settings through a GPO, its unreversable and nasty.  To reverse it you need to modify a registry key on every workstation, or do a ADSI Edit workaround.
By default, the Primary DNS Suffix of a member computer of an Active Directory domain is configured to automatically change when domain membership of a computer changes, or if the DNS name of the domain to which the computer is joined changes. This automatic DNS Suffix update change is controlled by this registry key:
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
REG_DWORD SyncDomainWithMembership is set to 0x1
This is default for every Windows 2K/XP/2K3 PC.
If you enable a Group Policy object which applies the DNS Suffix to all workstations under Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates -->
Network --> DNS Client, what this does is permanently change the default behaviour by deleting the SyncDomainWithMembership registry key from all Member Computers and adding a new registry key under:
    HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\System\DNSclient
If a previous administrator has done this, you can either setup a method to re-instate this registry key on every PC in your domain, or create a workaround using ADSI Edit to configure Active Directory to accept multiple DNS suffixes.
    The work around:
    1. Open up ADSIEdit and connect to the Domain Partition.
    2. Right click on the domain root and go properties.
    3. Modify the msDS-AllowedDNSSuffixes multi-valued attribute and adding in all DNS Suffixes you have on your domain.
Sorry I didnt answer your question directly and going off topic but I hate when Administrators configure DNS suffixes through means of GPO because it does cuases these annoying problems especially if you ever need to do a Domain Migration or Domain Rename.
    Kind Regards,
    Clint Boessen

  • Csa 5.2 defining dns suffixes as home nets

I am struggling to find any documentation that tells me how a system state defined by dns suffix is parsed. If i look in the dns suffix list (ipconfig /all) my local dns suffix for the company is always present, even if i am offline, this is also true at customer sites, they have their primary dns suffix in the list always, no matter where they are. I am wanting to use dns suffix to define an offline/online policy, since ip and mngt center reachable/unreachable is unacceptable, no supported redundant csamc and ip is just useless to define this function. Anybody tried to do policies like this ?

Hi Jan, it sounds like the machines in question have the DNS suffix appended to the computer name. These will always appear in the suffix search if that's the case.
Connection-specific or dynamic (DHCP) DNS should work for what you are trying to do.
I tried it and it seems to work as expected.

  • Append to DNS Suffix greyed out

I recently installed windows 8.1. For my work i need to connect to multiple domain, i tried to add all my work domains to DNS Suffix but its greyed out.
Based on prior threads on this forum, I have updated following Group Policy (Computer -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> DNS Client
Allow DNS Suffix appending to unqualified multi-label name queries -> Enabled
Primary DNS suffix -> Enabled (with list of my domains)
DNS suffix search list -> Enabled (with list of my domains)
Primary DNS suffix devolution -> Enabled
DNS Suffix option is still greyed out. Not sure what to do, could someone help please.
Thanks in advance for your support

    Hi Gigi,
Since you have forced the DNS suffix list in GP, then the DNS suffix option should be greyed out, it's a normal phenomenon because you have forced everything by GP, right?
If you still want to add some list to the suffix search list, you should add it by GP.
If you want to set the option directly, you can disable the policy you have enabled.
If I misunderstood something, please free correct me, a screenshot would be very helpful.

  • Wrt160n connection specific dns suffix

I have a WRT160N router that has been working great until I switched to a new ISP. The router configurations stayed the same, I just switched from a DSL modem to a cable modem (Motorola SB5100). The problem is the "connection specific DNS suffix" is being appended to the computer names and returning an incorrect IP address. Internet access is working fine. It appears that the DHCP is allowing the DNS suffix from the modem to push through to the DHCP clients.

Sorry about the misleading computer name, I'm not using a server for my DHCP. I'm using the router (WRT160N) as the DHCP server. This is just a home setup with 4-6 computers networked together. I use file sharing with the computer I call "home-server".  I use RDP to connect to the other computers. Now when I try to connect to another computer with just the computer name, the remote desktop fails to find the client. If I RDP the client computer with the IP address it connects, no problem.

  • DNS suffix loss

    Hello,
My MacBook air is configured with a Domain.
When i turn off then ON the Wifi, there is no more DNS suffix for the domain hosts. I need to add the domain suffix by myself to get it working. The serach in the domain works.
If i turn OFF/ON several times it sometimes get back in a normal way.
    Thanks,
    Olivier.

  • 22591 The specified computer name (%ComputerName;) is already in use by another virtual machine or by a virtual machine configuration object. Ensure that the computer name is unique in the VMM environment, and then try again.

    Hello everyone,
I recently bummed into an error message when I want to deploy a service template.
    Setup:
    1 HyperV server on win2k12 r2
1 SCCM VMM 2k12r2 on the hyperv server
1 template with all the objects in the library
    Error:
When I deploy the the service template I get the below error message.
    22591
The specified computer name (%ComputerName;) is already in use by another virtual machine or by a virtual machine configuration object.
Ensure that the computer name is unique in the VMM environment, and then try again.
The issue is that I can't find it anywhere, not on my domain controller not on my dns server as a record and also not as a vm in sccm or in powershell when doing get-vm. So where do I need to remove it ( no it is not an option to create a new Hostname for
    this service template ).
    Andre

There could be a couple things happening.
One - you have a Service Template, it defines %Computername% as a variable.  And you have deployed this Template once using 'foo' and you are deploying it again as 'foo' without deleting the previous instance.
Two - you hardcoded the computer name into the template.
Three - you are scaling out and you have hit the bug that the wizard does not increment the machinename if you have something like computername## where SCVMM should be incrementing the machine name.
Windows does not support identically named machines (you can't have two machines on the same network with the same computer name - they broadcast their name and the 'second' one shuts down its network stack).  In support of this SCVMM also enforces
    this rule.
And with any templates SCVMM is in charge of machine names at deployment.

  • Computer Name/"Computer's website" discrepancy after static IP used.

Modifying my network settings to use a static IP has caused a problem with my web sharing. Whereas before the computer name, computer's website and personal website were in sync, now the computer name is correct, but the latter two use something different and I cannot modify them. Any ideas about how to get the computer's website and personal website back to using the computer name?

    Sure. Fix your DNS.
Now that your machine is using a static IP address, you'll need to add corresponding records to your DNS server for your server's new IP address. Ideally you should add both forward and reverse records (Server Admin will do this automatically if you're using that to manage your DNS).

  • Changing host computer name

When I first set-up my iPad3, the computer [windows] I used was named "eyore1.  I recently changed computers [Windows]; the new computer is named "eyore"  My ipad will not sync.  It seems to be waiting until it's connected to "eyore1".  How can I change the setings in the iPad to reflect the new pc computer host name?

    Hello.
Using DHCP you may really have problems changing the hostname.
The fact is: The DNS server may assign your machine a host name which has nothing to do with the host name you sent to the DHCP server. Depending on the server (typically DHCP and DNS server are the same machine) nothing will really work. (This is the case with my configuration where the servers are located on a DSL router.)
I solved the problem the following way:
    * I created two host names (MyMachine and MyMachineNet) in the /etc/hosts file (Solaris 10 and newer: /etc/inet/ipnodes must be changed, too.)
    * "MyMachine" is 127.0.0.1 (localhost):
    127.0.0.1 localhost MyMachine
192.168.178.100 MyMachineNet* I assigned the name "MyMachineNet" to the network interface in /etc/hostname.networkcard.
    * I use DHCP
The computer name (in /etc/nodename) is "MyMachine". Some programs (e.g. Gnome !) establish a TCP/IP connection to "MyMachine" instead of "localhost" (I do not understand why). These programs are now satisfied because the host name "MyMachine" represents 127.0.0.1 (localhost).
I know that there is a switch that tells Solaris to take the machine name from DHCP/DNS instead of /etc/nodename. Unfortunately I forgot where it is.
