DNxHD footage rejected by FCP but accepted by QuickTime

From Sony Vegas 9e on Boot Camp > Windows 7 with latest free ("LE") DNxHD codecs installed, I rendered a 720p50 project to DNxHD for roundtrip to FCP and back. In Mac OS "Leopard", with the same version of DNxHD installed, the rendered footage played successfully in QuickTime player, it even looked correct.
BUT in FCP 7 just gave the error "Codec not found". Tried it on another Mac machine with "Snow Leopard" and FCP 7 and fresh download of same DNxHD codecs but got the same problem.
Someone else encountered the same problem (so it's not just me!) but their issue was not resolved:

That person was using entirely different settings to myself, so it's unlikely to be those at fault.
Experimenting to get diagnostic information:
Dragged the DNxHD clip into the FCP timeline, despite "Codec not found" error. It displayed the audio waveform but would not play or do anything, even when the video (only, not audio) was deleted from the timeline. The preview just showed red. I tried different Sequence Settings but to no avail. On the other hand FCP (right-click the media in browser ) correctly described its properties.
In FCP Audio/Video settings, none of the sections ("Sequence Presets" etc.) include any entries for Avid or DNxHD - should they? Likewise, tried exporting a conventional FCP-based project to DNxHD but no "Avid" or "DNxHD" options listed. Should there be?
So please what's the way to success here? Is there something I need to do to FCP to make it more aware of DNxHD? e.g. some kind of codecs-refresh in FCP? Or some special version of QuickTime needed or to be avoided? What definitely works?

Could be a couple of things, actually. Don't fall into the conversion trap that most editors do. If you have to convert something back and forth just to edit it, you're wasting all of your time.
First: make sure it's not some sort of permissions issue. Get info on the file, unlock it, and make sure read/write for ALL users is enabled, then don't lock it back. Try again.
Then, check the codec and all other info on the clip. Post that info. Check your Libraries/Quicktime against the info on your clip. Chances are, if you don't have FCP 6+ you don't have a lot of the HDV codecs installed. The "Apple HDV Component.component" fixes a LOT of this sort of thing.
Also- when you preview the clip in the Finder, do you get a picture? does it play? If not, you're going to need new codecs.
FCP is a PRO APP. It should be able to recognize and cut any piece of video out there. The trick is it's a plug-in architecture based on Quicktime. Quicktime is also a Plug-in architecture. If all the libraries to handle the video are in place, it doesn't matter which FCP you have, it just so happens that 6+ is the release written after a lot of the HDV codecs went live in cameras.

I have a few quicktime movies that I made a long time ago. I have dragged them to my hard drive and they look great and play exactly how I edited them in Final Cut Pro. However, when I open them in Quicktime or try to play them into any other format (Flash) they appear wider.
Now I am confused as it appears every movie I have ever saved seems to be distorted when I play it in Quicktime.
Are there some settings within FCP or Quicktime that I am not aware of?
Are both programs accurately playing what is recorded?

I am having this exact same issue. My sequence is 352x288 the video looks great in FCP but every time I Export this sequence straight out through QuickTime (not QT Conversion or Compressor) self-contained and using the current settings it plays back in QuickTime as 720x480 (640x480) millions in DV format. I even tried to force the export to a customized setting with the 352x288 frame size and it still plays back at 720x480 making the video look fuzzy and stretched. We've already spent a few hours testing other options with no success.
Oh and what's odd is if I open the same exported file in FCP's Viewer the size is correct and when I view the exported file's info (Apple+I) it says Dimensions: 352x288. Codec is DV/DVCPRO - NTSC. One thing I just thought of while typing this is would changing the codec make a difference since the original footage is 720p from an HVX200 camera? If I should change it what should I change it too?
The viewers will be watching this in QT Player. I'm using FCP7 and QT7 also tested with QTX with the same results.

Nice footage in FCP, but washed out in export

I've tried searching everywhere for a solution to this but I just don't know what to do anymore. I'm working with HD footage and when I export it to quicktime, most of the clips in the sequence become washed out, gain a bit of red color in certain areas, and/or become brighter. First, I thought this was due to the computer display, but after I brought it into DVD Studio Pro and created the DVD, the image looked the exact same way on my TV. Also, I had color corrected using the same TV and the image looked perfectly fine there.
I've tried experimenting with different settings. I tried compensating for the changes before exporting from FCP and by applying filters in Compressor, but it still never looks the same. I also tried changing the gamma correction in FCP's System Settings and enabling the "Final Cut Studio color compatability" option in Quicktime Pro (which did darken the footage a bit), but the image still looks a bit washed out and bright.
I put the DVD into a different computer (a PC) and it looked slightly better. I'm not sure why it looks so bad on my computer and TV.
I've never had this problem in the past, but I didn't have FCP 6, Quicktime 7.2 and wasn't working with HD back then either. I'm sure it probably had to do with the Quicktime update. Does anyone know of anything else that can be done? Has this problem been figured out yet or am I just overlooking something?

To make things more interesting, the interlacing follows a pattern. Three frames of non-interlaced shots, and then two frames of interlaced shots. Consistently.
Could this have something to do with my integrated graphics card?
Like I said, when the video is exported to a different format, the interlacing is gone, even though no deinterlacing was applied...

Difference in quality on footage imported in FCP 3.0 vs. 5.0?

Hi all.
I'm wondering if there is a difference in quality of image for footage captured in FCP 3.0 compared with footage captured in FCP 5.0?
I've got a project that contains footage captured from both these apps. I'm presently editing it on FCP 5.0. I'm just wondering if there is a difference that might come to haunt me later on down the road (i.e. moving project to dvd, blueray, hd dvd, digibeta, etc.)
The footage is standard DV.

FCP 3.0? What with H.264?
Yes, H.264 is a great delivery codec compared to some from the past, but if you're capturing DV via FireWire into your Mac, that's different and has nothing to do with H.264.
So in the old 3.0 days you could capture DV25, edit, then when you're done export to Cinepak or Sorenson 3 or somethin'.
Today you can capture DV25, edit, then when you're done export and compress to H.264.

Need to export MAC PRO RES HQ footage out of FCP and into premiere friendly format

Ive been forced to switch platforms mid project (mac -> PC) and luckily have obtained picture lock so theres no loss to having lost my FCP project. The problem has been that when i went to load my footage into premiere or to even play the files with VLC nothing worked, and i discovered that it was infact the codec, which was a MAC only PRO RES HQ codec, so now i need to re-export my footage out of FCP into a windows usuable format.
What is the best codec/format to use that will maintain the original quality? Filesize is not an issue.

As Jim mentioned, you'd have to use an uncompressed codec--probably QuickTime Animation, as I'm not sure you can encode to an uncompressed AVI on the Mac.
You might also consider something like
Sheer Video. It's a QuickTime codec for both Mac and PC. You'd have to purchase the Mac encoder component, and I think you could then get the free playback component on the PC--though you might actually have to buy the PC version, too. There's also Digital Anarchy's
Microcosm. Both of these codecs are perceptually lossless, but offer far greater compression ratios (and manageability) than Animation. Not saying either is the best option, but they are options, nonetheless.

Weird video display in FCP but normal in QT

Okay, this is getting really tiresome now. Final Cut Studio has become weird on an Intel Core Duo iMac. When the symptoms first appeared FCP would not launch at all. It would quit on startup with a window to send a report to Apple. On that occasion I trashed and reinstalled the entire FC Studio.
Following this the application opened so I assumed everything was OK. But then I went to import some AVCHD clips and FCP displayed the video with some weird looking semi-negative, metallic crappy special effects look. So ... I replaced the OS and reinstalled FCP Studio. Everything worked OK.
Now, a day later, I go to import some more AVCHD clips and we are back to the weird video. Yet the same file opens normally in QuickTime. There are two screenshots of the same frame to illustrate this. One from FCP and one from QuickTime.

Has anyone seen this before or have any ideas because I am not going to devote another ten hours to reinstalling the poxy thing?

Camera files are imported with Log & Transfer from SD cards with the AVCHD camera, P2 cards from the Panasonic HPX, from archived files of the complete card contents or imported from existing Capture Scratch files.
The point is that the MacBook Pro behaves normally and the iMac used to. I have no idea why the same version of FCP on the iMac has suddenly become strange. Even stranger is that after reinstalling both system and FCP it all worked correctly and shortly afterwards the same weird stuff started again.
Also, as mentioned, the Capture Scratch QT.mov file that FCP creates following a Log & Transfer reads normally with QuickTime - and iMovie - on the iMac.

Remember, most people don't have software for editing PDF files at all. They will not want to buy Acrobat just to edit your ebook.
Otherwise, I think you need to learn about form fields. This allows you to decide where it is to be typed in. You can allow filling and request editing is not allowed. You need to understand exactly what software can and can't fill in forms, and what can and can't save the result; it changes with versions of Adobe Reader.
Remember too that some software ignores your security settings anyway.

So I have copied all the footage, events and project folders from the 20 edited films over to my 2tb drive in a separate folder - ejected the 250gb drive (as i only have 2 thunderbolt slots and one is used for a 27 inch monitor on my macbook pro)
.......my question is how do i load all of the 20 films into my project library so i can see all of the 30 films at once so i can copy and paste form one film to another - is this possible? and withlout messing up lol

Events and Projects can be internal or on any ext. drive.
You can use any Event in any Project.
… so, why is the 'location' of your files on any relevance for your Projects ??

Because it behaves differently depending on whether the phone is locked (in standby) or unlocked (in use) when the call comes in.

Thanks for your reply. This video was recorded by my own professional camera, Sony PMW EX 3, two years back. But I am neither a professional cameraman nor an editor. I am just like a beginner in both. I didnt have space in my storage device, so I just copied all my clips, thinking I can edit it latter, without recompressing or editing or whatever I should have done it at that point of time. Now I need to edit it and use it in my profession. I am very upset. Please help me in going step by step to get it in FCP X for editing. Also I would like to know, do I need to buy the Compressor 4 for any reason. I dont mind in buying, if you think it is going to be useful for some reason. Retaining sharp 1280 × 720 footage in a FCP 1920 x 1080 sequence?

Hi Guys
Some video footage I have which contains text on screen is 1280 × 720 and I want to include this footage in a FCP 1920 x 1080 sequence. Efforts to scale up the footage from 1280 × 720 to 1920 x 1080 have resulted in the text looking nowhere near as sharp as 1280 × 720.
Can any of you advise me how I might be able to include this 1280 × 720 footage in a 1920 x 1080 sequence without, ideally, having to scale the footage? I'm thinking that I might need to create a 'letterbox' using Compressor 3.5.3. However, can you briefly advise me how I may do this?

Just put the 1280x720 material in your sequence, double click on it to load it into the Viewer window then click on the Motion Tab.
Set the Scale to 100. This will place the material in the middle of the 1920x1080 window with black all around.
