Do Airport Cards "Die"?

Do airport cards die, croak, kick the bucket after a few years?
My iMac has had the same card for four years.
The iMac detects the card, and the card gets signal from the base station when it boots up.
But five minutes after the computer boots, the connection between the card and the base station fizzles, quits, dies, poof-out.
The iMac still detects the card, but no send/receive is going on.
Could it be that my Airport card has gone to Airport card heaven???

I had thought that the Airport card in my iMac G4 had died. When I had an old base station, I had upgraded to some system update of some kind - that's when the signal began dropping off first on the dark side pc with it's Dell TrueMobile, then on the iBook G3 then finally the iMac started to have problems. I went and bought a Extreme base & new DSL. For a few weeks A-OK. Just did software updates on the iMac (the last being a security update). The signal began going on and off with increasing degredation and loss time. I tried all the standard recommendations (as I did the 1st time with the old base) - still it got worse. I turned on the old base & moved it closer to the iMac & saw signal - so I ethernet'd the old base Wan to the Extreme LAN, & old base LAN to the dark side pc. AAll 3 were happy as a clam for one night -then the signal died on the iMac. For days I tried all kinds of things, checking with iStumbler - Nada - I was sure that it had died. I posted a question about getting USB wireless for the Mac. Duane suggested that I check out Ethenet wireless adapters (he seems to be an excellent poster interested in helping people and solving their problems - Frank does too). I was about to call and order one. I thought that I would LAN out from the old Base to the iMac. Before I did, I knew that the dark side pc would have no connection, so I re-installed the driver (actually the other day I had nuked & rebuilt the dark side pc). Suddeny, for the 1st time in over two years, the Dell TrueMobile maintained a consistent signal. Then i plugged the ethernet cable from the old base LAN to the iMac. Tried to get a web site, then remembered that I needed to go to the System Preferences and include Ethernet in the Network preferences - I onlly had Airport check & at the top of the list. Suddenly I had an airport signal & connected to a site. My son said it was the ethernet, so I unplugged the ethernet. It still worked. Now with iStumbler on the iMac I see both bases, the old and the Extreme - I had seen nothing for days - now I cocnsistenetly see signals maintained at levels that I never experienced over the last two years. All three, iMac, iBook, dark side pc (& an XBox) are all super good & have been for over a day.
I said all this to show how bizare this all seems, but to encourage you not to too quickly give up hope - the Airport card may not be dead after all! If, after you try the various recommendations or the suggested permutations & combinations, and still cannot get a signal - try to get the card checked if you can (Apple store, etc.) Otherwise, consider Duane's advice about wireless ethernet adapters (rather than a USB solution).
I know that I did NOT answer your question - I could be wrong, but I think that in the end, only Apple will be able to really answer the question - but until then, do not give up hope and please consider following the suggestions on some of the super-posters (not said in a derogatory way, but to establish their credibilty), even if some suggestions may seem too obvious, etc.

  • AirPort Card died?

My MacBook's only about three month's old. Anyhow, yesterday, my AirPort turned off on it's own and I couldn't turn it on. Restarted it and it was fine for a bit and later I got a "No AirPort card installed" message. Did my AirPort card like die or something? A little while before, I did notice that my wireless internet kept disconnecting, but I didn't think anything of it... Any help? And I'm still covered under the warranty, so I can ask them to do something about it, right? Thanks in advance.

before taking it in i would connected via ethernet port and then update all of the drivers... i think the other day i just did an update for my airport card so this may work for you....

  • Wi-Fi gone: "No Airport Card Installed."

Last night I watched Netflix just fine,  put my laptop to bed and this morning, no wif-fi connection!!. Blank airport icon reading "No Airport Card Installed."
Recently installed new battery, not that that probably matters. Do you think my Airport Card died overnight? I have tried restarting twice and nothing. Other devices can connect to the wi-fi just fine. Any suggestions? Looks like this, below.... thank you tech-heads for any help you can give me. Staying tethered to the modem is a drag... especially since  I just forked over $130 for a new battery! I have a MBp-17 with OS 10.5.8, Mahalo from Kona Hawaii.

Unfortunately this probably means that your MacBook's AirPort card has died. Last desperate effort at reviving it, try resetting the PRAM on the MacBook and if that does not change anything reset the System Management Controller.
If none of those work, carry it in for service or call Apple at the appropriate phone number on this page to have them set up service.
    Best of luck.

  • Airport Card and Pismo

    Hello!
Picked up a used Pismo in great shape. I have a spare working Airport card and installed it. It did not work. So I erased the drive that had 10.2.3 and installed 10.4 with all updates to 10.4.8. Still does not work. I took the PowerBook apart and examined the card dock pins, cable and mobo connection. Physically they all look fine.
I am pretty avid and mac hardware repair. I have a couple Pismo motherboards and stuff in storage. Before I go taking all this apart again and swapping stuff out, could I be doing something wrong here?
I see only two sources of potential fault. The motherboard or the card. Any experts hear of Pismos having Airport issues? (all other buses are fine, firewire, UBS, etc) Any report of Airport cards dying? (I dont have another spare to test)
    Thanks!

    marco,
Did you select AirPort in System Prefs > Network > Network Port Configurations?
If you have the Hardware Test CD that came with Pismos or have another Mac that can burn the AHT, download it here and see what it says about AirPort.

  • Is my MacBook Airport Extreme card dying?

I have a black MacBook with an airport card:
    AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86)
    Wireless Card Locale: Worldwide
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 1.4.10.3
For a couple of years I have connected quite happily to wireless internet at home via a BT Broadband Home Hub. Over the last couple of weeks, however, I have had major intermittent problems with signal strength if I am more than a couple of metres from the Hub; I have had the signal strength icon grey out completely when I was no more than ten feet away through a plaster ceiing and wood floor, in a room where the signal previously showed at full strength.
I have considered the possibility that a neighbour's electronic activity may be causing interference. This seems unlikely, since I have twice changed channels on the BT Home Hub without solving the problem, and when I search for other local networks (using e.g . the Airport Radar 2 widget) I see no strong signals. The clincher is that my wife's iBook seems not to have any signal strength problems.
So, I ask - could my Airport Extreme card be faulty in some way? How could I investigate this further? Can this part be replaced by the user (i.e. me)?
I might mention that a while back I installed a larger hard disk, so my computer may be running a bit hotter than usual. But the fan is by no means on continually, so I am doubtful about that as a cause.

Wow, it seems like a lot of you are having problems. I doubt all of you are having hardware issues.
Here's some general things to consider (in no particular order, though I recommend reinstalling as a last resort.):
    1. Have you changed internet settings at all recently?
    2. What frequency is your router using? If it's an Airport Extreme you can check this using Airport utility. Try changing it's frequency to a different setting. Often times devices in the are can cause interference. Check Network Utility in the Utilities folder to view info about your Airport card. The interface should be en1. Then in Airport utility you can make sure the settings will work with your mac.
    3. Try other other computers with that same router.
    4. Try your Mac on other networks or routers.
    5. Repair permissions from Disk Utility.
    6. Try resetting the PRAM at startup by holding command (Apple)-Option-P-R
    7. As you said: archive and install.
    8. Erase and install.
    9. Windows if you have boot camp.
    10. Run the diagnostics from the install disc by booting up with the D key.
    11. run an alternate diagnostic utility (Techtool, etc.)
Christopher: you seem to have done some testing. Still it doesn't necessarily seem that it is a hardware problem. Technically speaking it is not a user replaceable part. However, it don't believe it's overwhelmingly difficult to do yourself. You would need to remove the keyboard which would require you to remove the battery and some screws. There's guides at iFixit.com Or if you really want to do some googling, you may be able to hunt down Apple's own service manual -though end users aren't supposed to have them. This is the airport card you need: http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-802-11g-Airport-Extreme-Card/IF185-0 11
If you have AppleCare for your Mac, it's likely still under warranty, and I wouldn't open the computer. Also if you try that airport card and it doesn't work, you could have an antenna problem, which is more difficult to get at.

  • "No airport card installed" only in swedish mode?

Hi all, got this problem with my Macbook pro!
Recently when I was reconfiguring my wifi-network (assigning my time capsule as main router and the modem I got from my ISP as a "bridge"), I noticed that my airport card was acting strange.
The problem is that it says "No airport card installed", but I still got internet connection and can surf/download stuff without a problem. Also, when I go into "System preferences/Network" I can see my airport connection and turn it on/off. Although when I click "Advanced" nothing happens.
I've tried several things but none seems to work, and I'm not sure its an hardware issue. Anyway, this is what I've tried:
    1. Rebooting (several times) = Didn't work
    2. Resetting PRAM and NVRAM = Didn't work
    3. SMC-reset = Didn't work
    4. Rebooting into Windows XP via bootcamp = Airport card detected and working just fine
    5. Restoring older save via time capsule = Didn't work
    6. Format and reinstall Snow leopard and restore older save via time capsule = Didn't work
    7. Format and reinstall Snow leopard (again) = Didn't work...-ish?
Now, here's the strange bit. As I log in to a new account with english as main language I notice that the wifi-icon on the top dashboard now is filled (it was greyed out and only said "No airport card installed [in swedish ofc]) and I can now click it, change network and all that stuff. Although, when I go to "System preferences/Language & text" and change my preferred language to swedish and log out & in, the same problem occurs (greyed out wifi-logo, no airport card installed etc.)
    So, I'm totally confused. Halp?

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.
If that doesn't do it, the card has likely died.

  • HT4199 I use an IMAC thas has the latest version of OSX.  Lately I have had problems with my internet connection...now I see that my airport card is turned off.  How can I turn it back on...I have done the obvious things in the network menu...even gone to

I have an IMAC that uses OSX maverick (10.9..) I cannot connect to the internet because my airport card is turned off.  I .have tried repeatedly to turn it on, ,going into assist in diagnostics, as well as the opening wireless menu.  I am thinking the card might have died.  How can I run diagnostics on the card?  How can I fix the problem?  Java mama

Click the Wi-Fi icon in your Mac's menu bar.
If it looks like this, it's off:
Click it and select Turn Wi-Fi On.
If it looks like this, it's already on but something else is wrong:

  • Airport Card Disappeared After Turning Airport Off

I successfully used my MacBook Pro to connect wirelessly to the 'net for 2 hours, then turned Airport off for security purposes. I came home and tried several times -- unsuccessfully -- to turn Airport back on (to use my home Airport Express.) The wireless transmitter was functioning, as established by a successful connection by my iPhone. I rebooted and attempted to turn it on several times -- no joy. I tried removing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist and restarting, and the menubar icon (and About This Mac - More Info) claim that no Airport Card is installed. It seems unlikely that the card would die just because I turned it off. Any ideas?

What Mac are you referring to? (Part of your info at the bottom should at least say what model). Turning it off for security purposes? In any case check System Profiler>Network>Airport Card and see if it shows up there. You might want to post in your Mac model specific forum area.

  • Bad Airport Card?

I just got my MacBook last week. We had no problems with Airport until tonight when it failed to connect to our wireless network.
The network is fine--I'm using it now. We have two other computers connected wirelessly with no problems, so the router is fine as well.
The airport signal indicator no longer shows the three little black arcs. Instead it has an arrow pointing upward (to heaven?). Did my Airport card just die?

No worries, your airport didn't die, but somehow you managed to enable airport sharing, therefore disabling your airport. What you need to do is go to system preferences --> sharing --> internet --> and make sure to turn sharing off (after you disable it the button should say start and the options should no longer be greyed out)
    hope this helps!

  • How to test Airport Card?

How can I make sure that my Airport Card is working properly?

No, this doesn't indicate the AirPort card is dying. Clearly it can sustain the higher throughput when running under Windows.
Therefore this sounds like it comes down to an issue of configuration. Apple set default network parameters that work adequately in a wide range of network environments (e.g. from dialup through gigabit LAN networking), however, the settings are not ideal for any of them (they can't predict what kind of environment you'll be running in). Apparently Windows does a better job of either setting the defaults, or tuning the network parameters.
That's not to say that you can't get the AirPort to work the same way under Mac OS X, it's just that it needs a little tuning to get there. Unfortunately some of that tuning is distinctly 'under the hood' and can be a little daunting. If you're not confident in tweaking the system at that level, check out IPNetTuner X which does a lot of the hard work for you.

  • Airport Card / Connection gone

About two weeks ago, both my Powerbook and girlfriend's iBook lost Airport ability. There was no connection to the Airport Express base station, even though the AE had the normal green light.
Clicking the Airport icon in the top menu bar gave the endless spinning beach ball and froze the Powerbook. Same for the iBook. (Note: In 3 1/2 years my PB has frozen maybe three times.) I have hard-shut-down the PB 30-40 times last weekend trying to resolve this Airport issue.
I have reconfigured the AXBS and now just ethernet straight to the PB for the internet. I can't believe it would be a hardware issue - either BOTH cards dying at the same time. The only thing I can imagine is that there was some sort of update that did them both in, but I can't remember what it could be.
We erased the drive and reinstalled Jaguar, then Panther to the iBook but the Airport issue persists there. I can't mess with the PB because I have too much work to do.
Please help. And, Henry B., you and I have discussed a bit of this before and you were a help, but I'm trying here again.
    Cheers,
    Jason

Please see my post. This is an option that may help. Here it is copied and pasted
To any of those that are having issues with your airport after the update here is a possible solution. Open the Hard Drive (from Finder) Then open "Preferences" then scroll to "SystemConfiguration" drag it to the desktop, and then restart. After that, Open up "System Preferences" from the apple menu. Go to "Network", you then need to make a new location. You can title it anything that you would like to. Hit "Apply Now". Your airport should be up and running, you may need to restart. You can now delete the "SystemConfiguration" folder that you dragged to your desktop, as OSX has now made a new one.
The reason that you need to do this, is that somehow, the "SystemConfiguration" folder and files became corrupt and something in the X.4.3 causes them to be noticed, thus your airport fails to work. Hope it helps some of you.

  • Belkin F5D7000 NIC as Airport card in a Mac

First off, I only want to provide my experience here so that others will have less trouble than I.
Hardware: Two Blue & White G3's running 10.4.6 and 10.4.6 Server.
Summary: I purchased a Belkin PCI NIC model F5D7000 (version 4.00), popped it in the Mac and immediately it was recognized as an Airport card with no problems.
The story doesn't end here because according to the bulk of online information, the F5D7000 uses the Broadcom chipset and works the same as an Airport Extreme card. I only later found out that this is an over-simplification and the version of this card is very critical. I only got lucky as there are now six versions of this card floating around out there. Not even Belkin Tech support can tell them apart.
I needed to purchase a second one for my other Mac and this is where my aggravation really begins. I was faced with version 4.00 and 5.00 on the shelf. I only selected the 5.00 because it was newer and had a removable antenna where the 4.00 does not. This was a huge mistake as the 5.00 does not work as an Airport Extreme card at all... I could not get it to work... I exchanged it for a version 3.00 and subsequently purchased a version 2.00.
    Results:
Let me summarize my test results below.
v1.00 - Untested but have read that this version contains the Broadcom chipset and works as an Airport card.
v2.00 - Airport Confirmed with Broadcom chipset. Belkin told me this version was not Mac compatible.
v3.00 - RT2500 chipset and not recognized as an Airport card. However I did get it working with the 11g-RT2500 Drivers provided at this link- http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm -> Even though Belkin's F5D7000 product page mentions Mac compatibility, version 3.00 is the only supported card and that's only with OS 10.2 and 10.3. Belkin's drivers do NOT work in Tiger and Tech support will not assist you with Tiger.
v4.00 - Airport Confirmed with Broadcom chipset. Also note, as far as I could tell, this is the only version without a SMA type removable antenna. Permanent mount that is upside down while in a PowerMac. Easily flipped 180 with some basic tools.
v5.00 - I can only confirm that this version did NOT work as an Airport card. It may have the same RT chipset and work with the same RT drivers as the 3.00, but I did NOT figure out or confirm this before returning it to the store. A user on another forum has confirmed that his version 5.00 requires the RT2500 drivers from Ralinktech confirming my suspicions that this card uses the RT2500 just like the version 3.00.
v6.00 - ?? unknown. Some stores carry this version but I did not get my hands on one. Following the chipset leap-frogging pattern above, it looks like this card might have the Broadcom chipset. Can anyone confirm?
Conclusion: I think this is a great inexpensive card but it's definitely in a gray area between Mac unsupported and fully supported. Belkin needs to decide which way to go and correct their online documentation and tech support people.
If you can get your hands on a version 1.00, 2.00, or 4.00, you'll probably be ok with a great NIC you can setup as an Airport card in under a minute. With version 3.00 or 5.00 (and maybe 6.00?), you'll need to do a little more work installing the RT drivers. Actually, setting that up was very easy too but since it's not recognized as Airport, you have to make sure to do the extra configurations so you automatically connect on start-up.
If you get a Belkin F5D7000 that has neither the Broadcom or RT chipsets, then you are outside of my testing arena and I can't really say if/how that would work in a Mac.
Other Comments: The most difficult part was finding comprehensive online information about this card, chipsets, versions, and Mac support. Also if you get a RT chipset, the Mac initially will not even see this PCI card, therefore, finding out what chipset you have is virtually impossible. Anyone with a Windows PC handy can install it in there perhaps to find out more details.
I hope that some people will find my post somewhat helpful. I know I was dying to find a post like this about 24 hours ago.
    (2) B & W G3/500 & Gigabit G4/1.6 Ghz Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I went to every single OfficeMax and Staples and
Circuit City in my area and only found v.5000 and
v.6000 F5D7000s. Even asked them if they had any old
stock in the back and they shook their heads.
Got fed up with this, did some research, and ordered
a Buffalo WLI2-PCI-G54 card from NewEgg; it was
cheaper than Amazon's price, approx. $31.99.
I assumed that everybody should already be aware that the Buffalo card is also a very good alternative.
However, some of us got some very good rebate deals on the Belkin, some of us have a Belkin already, and finally some of us had been given a Belkin F5D7000. In those cases, the information regarding Belkin's various versions and chipsets is extremely valuable for saving some time. So this thread was started to provide detailed information to the various Belkin owners since Belkin is so unable or unwilling to help the Mac community.
Now it's too bad you just didn't try the Belkin version 6.000. It too has the SMA connector and it might have the Broadcom chipset. Then you could have reported back here to confirm or deny status of the latest version's compatibility. Staples has a 14 day no hassle return policy. That's how I was able to test out a couple versions.
Regardless, I'm very glad this thread at least helped you in that since you could not find version 2.000 or 4.000 you went with a known good alternate.

  • Airport card sees networks but won't connect.

    I'm not entirely sure why.
Wired ethernet works fine, and our G4 Desktop's Airport card works fine.
Mine, however, is being a bit wonky.
I shut the computer down for the night about a week ago.
Brought it back up and got the "There was an error joining AirPort network *our SSID*".
Fine, sometimes it does that. I wait and it usually works in a few minutes.
    Not this time.
We rebooted our Linksys WAP and our Cisco router, no good.
Shut the iBook down again, reseated the Airport card, fired it back up and paid close attention to the verbose boot this time.
    Nothing abnormal, no errors.
    Still no wireless connection.
I've tried connecting to other wireless networks around us, and we even defaulted the WAP back to out of box state (i.e. it was wide open and not passworded), but nothing. Every other wireless device in the house (G4 desktop, Dell laptop, and a Toshiba tablet) works just fine.
The computer can SEE wireless networks, but it can't connect to anything.
There have been no major system updates recently, and the only program I've installed in the past 3 MONTHS has been the World of Warcraft Burning Crusade expansion. Nothing else has changed, which is what's stumping me.
    I'm starting to wonder if:
    A) I'm overlooking something incredibly simple.
    B) My airport extreme card is dying.

firstly, tesserax, a tremendous thank you for your help. unfortunately, i tried each step you suggested, but the problem continues.
step 1: i have tried and failed to connect to several different networks in a handful of locations (home, work, friend's house, local coffee shop, etc.).
step 2: i have disabled my own wireless encryption as well as the wireless encryption at a friends house, however, to do so i had to use their ibook, as my own either didn't list the base station in the AirPort utility (although it did list the base station in the AirPort status pull down), or it asked for a password even though the base station wasn't password protected (maybe this may add some insight into the issue?).
step 3: i have connected the computer directly to the modem using an ethernet cable and was able to go online - perhaps this means the problem is related solely to the card.
step 4: i moved the the com.apple.networkConfig.plist file and and the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop and restarted. unfortunately, OS did NOT rebuild the files. instead, i had to go through the network diagnostics to rebuild them manually. while the files were replaced, the problem was not solved.
step 5: i reset the PRAM, but the problem still exists.
step 6: i reset the PMU, but the problem still exists.
i then tried various combinations of your suggestions, including moving the files out of the preferences folder and then reseting the PRAM and the PMU, but still nothing.
after having attempted every fix i could think of (and that was before posting to this forum) i did a full erase and install of the OS. since that's usually the cure all to whatever ails the computer, it's my assumption that the issue is a physical (hardware) one. that said, if you have any other suggestions i will be more than happy to give them a shot.
    thanks again,
    brad

  • Problem with Airport. NO AIRPORT CARD INSTALLED

Hi, im using Mac OS X ver 10.6.8 my problem is with the airport. it says no AIRPORT CARD INSTALLED. This was just suddenly, and i cant find the solution. if somebody could help me on this matter. thank youP

You could try resetting the SMC and the PRAM. But I suspect the Airport card in your Mac has gone Bye Bye, died. The only way to fix that, If the 2 resets I posted above don't help, is to replace the Airport card.

  • Airport Card Status

Is there a way to check the functioning of the airport card? I gave my sister an eMac with an airport extreme card. Airport status was displayed in menu bar. She has been using it as a software base station so my niece could access the internet with her Macbook. Yesterday the airport status icon was gone from the menu bar and my niece cannot access the internet. I have talked to my sister over the phone (she is in KY and I am in FL) and on iChat, checking the preferences etc. Airport is grayed out on all pages where it should be available. Sounds to me like the card died. Is there a way to check the card out with out removing and replacing it?

The card should be listed in System Profiler -> Network -> Airport
If it isn't, then yes, doesn't sound good. Try a PMU Reset as detailed in this document - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=34885
