Do any of you G3 users get "Kernel Panic" crashes??

Hey there, so I'm actually a G4 user here, I recently upgraded from an older 2000-era one (when my internal drive crashed) to a newer 2002-era one a family member passed off to me. Though I never really had any problems with the older computer, I've started to experience a variety of them with this one, from daily freezing to the dreaded "Kernel Panic" issue.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_panic
Thing is, I'd never experienced a Kernel Panic before upgrading to this computer, and am--perhaps naively--trying to figure out to what degree the actual computer model itself, and not just the software, may contribute to them (my drives were all Verified and Repaired okay, and my RAM SEEMS to be sufficient to run the OS I'm running). But, if you guys get them too, it may be a moot point...
I'll ask further on the appropriate OS boards, but obviously, I don't just want to keep using this computer if there's any risk that these problems will cause a greater failure...

Any Mac running OS X can experience a Kernal Panic. See my response in your other similar post at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1435234&tstart=0
 Cheers, Tom

I'm getting kernel panics each day as I shut down, the message of restarting by holding down the power button appears on the screen - it began about a month ago and. Do you have any ideas of how to solve the problem? I've copied the logs that I found for each kernel panic that still have the message logged. Please help if you can, I have read some of the other comments and perhaps it has something to do with my anti-virus software being on at start up. I have copied the log here. Any advice will be welcome.

Immediate suspects are the additions you added to you rsystem that installed kexts (drivers).  From above,
    com.intego.iokit.VBX6NKE            1
    com.intego.iokit.BehavioralKext            1
    com.intego.kext.VirusBarrier.AppBarrierKPI            10.6.8

    com.globaldelight.driver.BoomDevice            1.1
    com.huawei.driver.HuaweiDataCardACMData            4.2
    Two experiments you can try.
    1.  Boot in safe mode and see if you can shut down normally.  All thise additions won't be running in safe mode so this test would indicate it is one of them causing the problem.
    2. Uninstall all the intego VirusBarrier stuff.  That's my first guess and the troublemaker.

  • Keep getting Kernel panics on Snow leopard 10.6.3

I recently messed up my leopard install... long story. When restoring the system I decided to go with Snow leopard, thought why not, would like to become more familiar with it. Ever since I got it I have been getting Kernel Panics out the wazoo. I have been saving the error reports for the lastest 4..
Keep in mind I have looked into the issue and tried deleting the cisco vpn client. I use a microsoft keyboard without any Microsoft intellitype software installed, so i tried using a mac keyboard, didn't help.
At first I thought the issue was due to my first restore and attempt to restore my old user file that I have backed up. The first time I copied my documents, app support, and some pref files. Got a kernel panic within 20 minutes.
So I created a new user (deleted the old one) again and restored again, this time I installed the programs with the snow leopard installs before copying the app support files. I also copied the documents as well. I only copied one pref file for Mac Msn Messenger. I also copied the keychain from my old leopard install. even though I did it this way I am still getting Kernel Panics over and over. I am up to 5 for today alone. I would love to know why. Below I will post my error reports from oldest to newest.

Please help,I just don't know what is going on with this computer. It doesn't happen due to anything I keep doing that I can tell. Sometimes when typing sometimes when listing to music and reading a web page. Sometimes while writing a email in entourage. It is costing my work time and I will have to revert to leopard tomorrow if I can't find some sort of solution.
    Please let me know. Thanks.

    HI,
Try booting your Mac with only the keyboard and mouse connected. See if you get a kernel panic.
If you do, go here for help to Resolve Kernel Panics

  • Quicksilver G4 wont finish startup - gets kernel panic - how to fix?

Recently acquired a G4 quicksilver - dual core 867Mhz (mirror door) - we managed to get it working for half an hour after we gave it some RAM and a hard drive (it came with none) before it froze. When we tried a restart we got the grey screen and a message which contained lots of Chinese symbols instructing you to power down the computer. Now we only get kernel panics. I've attached a pic of the panic in case any of you can decipher it. What's the next step?

Boot off your Apple Hardware Test Disc , then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Your model would have a separate AHT CD.
Here's the list and downloads for AHT for some G4 models if you don't find yours, some G4s only have it on the Original Install Disc...

If you've recently upgraded the memory, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts on the memory modules when handling them. If necessary, clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.

They use the latest OES version with all the latest sp and patches applied. They have even tested with the an OES 11 beta with the same result. The OS run as a VM on VMware in 64 bit mode attached to a SAN. Has also been tested as a plain install without VMware. The Lion version is 10.7.2.
This is how the problem occurs:
    1. Mount the CIFS share - no problems
    2. Use the share - no problems
    3. If the network connection drops you get a message that the CIFS volume has disappeared and you are asked to unmount it. When you do that you get a kernel panic. You can force the problem to happen by turning of WiFi.
So it is OES2 but which version (SP1, SP2, or SP3)? Interesting as I'd only heard of this with NetWare 6.5.
Do you (and anyone else experiencing this issue in this thread) know if this has recently started happening, perhaps after the latest November 2011 Scheduled Maintenance patches were installed?
I'll hopefully be able to do some testing tomorrow but in the meantime I've asked Novell ...
    HTH.

  • Keep getting Kernel Panics

For the last month, I've been getting Kernel Panics, specially when turning my 13'' MBP on. I restarted it on safe mode and it worked fine, so I guess it's a software issue. Here's my report, I hope I can get help to lnow what's wrong and if I need to uninstall anything. Thanks for the help!

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If it's happened only once, and is not repeated in at least a few thousand hours of use, a reasonable choice would be to ignore it. Machines don't work perfectly. They never will.
If the panic is recurrent, the possibilities are (1) a damaged OS X installation; (2) a fault in a peripheral device, if any; (3) an internal hardware fault; and (4) an obscure bug in OS X.
You can rule out the first two possibilities by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected. Probably there will be no change. In that case, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or unless it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at leasttwo independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

The Kernal Panics had become so frequent that my iMac was becoming unusable. I do have a 2006 macBook that seemed to be behaving fine. I has all the same software except for the virus protection (the iMac has Intego VirusBarrier and the MacBook uses Symantec Antivirus). As has been noted in this discussion, I was beginning to suspect VirusBarrier might be the problem. But as indicated in my crash log (and noted here by several others) the Cisco VPN was being called out. Researched the VPN configuration that I was accessing and discovered that a new feature of the Anyconnect VPN software was a "web security" option that was not used on the VPN I was accessing. Before I switched virus protection, I uninstalled the VPN software and re-installed without the web security feature. It has been a week without kernal panics. I have had one crash that appeared to be related to Lotus Notes, but no kernal panics. For those of you wrestling with the same issue, may want to try this solution...

  • I get "kernel Panic" the moment I'm connecting an external (m-audio) audio drive

I get "kernel Panic" the moment I'm connecting an external (m-audio) audio drive

I believe m-audio installs some kexts (drivers) so my guess is it's what's causing your KP's.
Maybe you have an incompatible version or the stuff just plain doesn't work in lion.

  • Getting kernel panics frequently w/ 10.4.5 update (PPC)

After installing the 10.4.5 update on my G4 Powerbook, I've been getting kernel panics quite frequently. Prior to the update, I never had a single kernel panic for a few months I've had this computer. But in the past few days with 10.4.5, my kernel panic count is approaching 10. The cause seems to be quite random in that they appear unrelated to what application I was running. It seems more to do with the trackpad and/or keyboard for whatever reason.
I've gone through all the major diagnostic steps, like running Apple hardware test, repairing permissions, and so on, but nothing turned up.
Yesterday I also had a complete freeze while moving the cursor with the trackpad. No kernel panic message, the computer just froze.
Has anyone noticed any more frequent kernel panics? Any steps in isolating the root cause?
    Thanks in advance.
    PowerBook G4 15" (aluminum)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   RAM: 1.5 GB

Dean, thanks for your great suggestions.
FYI, I tried archive and install; i.e. reinstalling the OS with the system DVD (10.4.2), and bringing it back up to 10.4.5 using the software update. Still, the kernel panics returned.
I'm posting all of my kernel panic logs in all their glory here (if this forum allows me to do it). My casual observation is, they seem somewhat random. I do not see a clearly repeated pattern here. I'm fairly proficient in this kind of stuff as I'm a long time software developer (just not the mac kind yet), but nothing seems to jump out at me.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks much!
ps: also, I started using a USB-based KVM switch recently, and I wonder if it has anything to do with it. The kernel panics happen usually when my Powerbook is not connected to the KVM switch. Funny...

  • Updated to Tiger and get kernel panics

    Hi,
I updated my desktop G4 (quicksilver) to Tiger last week, and have suddenly started getting kernel panics. I am not sure what to do about it, other than trying to reinstall Tiger. It didn't happen the first few days of Tiger, so I am not sure it's the OS. Do I need to be worried about my drive? could i lose information with this?
I do have one bad hard drive inside the machine which crashed in November; I haven't removed it yet. Would removing that bad drive correct the issue? There is a 2nd drive in the machine that is fine and an external firewire drive that is now my main book drive.
Or could the panic be the result of peripherals, such as sound cards, MIDI gear, printer? or something like software? I use a lot of 3rd party software and have updated quite a few of them in the past week, since updating to Tiger. I did call Apple Care and they suggested removing all external devices and apps...way too much if I don't need to do it.
    Help?
    Thanks
    Kat
    G4 powermac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   also have macbook intel - 10.4.8

    Wow -
What an incredible answer. I am posting the panic log here, but I remembered that I recently just plugged in my MIDI yamaha clavinova to my sound card, and that's when the panics began. Could be a coincidence, but I unplugged it to see if they stop.
I will also remove the bad drive. It crashed in November. Disk first aid was unable to repair it and the genius at the apple store told me that something physically broke inside the drive, so there is no salvation for it. I was able to recover most data before it all disappeared, luckily. I just haven't gotten around to removing it and reinstalling the original apple drive.

  • Kernel panics, crashes and other issues

    hi all -
i've been reading through tons of posts over the last week about my issue and trying to resolve it but can't seem to get my machine up and running consistently.
it started crashing consistently on jan 10 - suspiciously the day the itunes update came out - and i have since run the fixes people posted relating to that update to no avail.
i keep getting kernel panics - while i'm running photoshop, safari, word, textedit, ical, etc. i took it to a mac authorized repair shop, but they gave it back to me saying they couldn't duplicate the issue described. it started happening again right away - i unplugged everything except the keyboard and mouse. still got them. have run disk utility from the startup disks several times.
one thing i noticed was it seems to repair the same problem every time - "invalid extent entry". i found a post on this board that said only disk warrior can fix that problem in 10.3.9. disk utility says it fixes it, but it comes up every time...
also - after i downloaded and ran onyx it seemed to be better for the last two days. and then today i plugged my scanner in and tried using it. it crashed photoshop and then everything else started crashing even though i unplugged the scanner. i tried looking for a driver update for it, but os 10 couldn't open the file i downloaded from epson - which was:
TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v2.65A
    Macintosh OS X (v10.2.x - 10.3.x)
    epson11385.sea.hqx - 34.2MB - posted on 04/18/05
a window popped up that said the file didn't appear to be compressed and i should get more information from the manufacturer. i read on this forum that bad drivers can cause kernel panics, but i can't seem to load the update. i also trashed my epson printer driver for good measure.
    1) so my first question is: could the invalid extent entry problem be causing kernel panics? or are the two unrelated? should i definitely download disk warrior to fix that?
    2) also something i haven't been clear about regarding repairing permissions - do you have to boot from another drive to repair permissions? my internal drive is my startup disk, and i don't have a bootable external drive. i tried repairing permissions with onyx, but it crashes every time. is this because i need to boot from another disk? how do you do that and run onyx?
    3) has anyone had the problem with panther not opening the epson 4870 driver update?
i've been trying to solve this for weeks...i'm about to swear off technology altogether and move to the mountains.
thanks for any suggestions you might have!

You are doing fine. Don't beat up on yourself (bad ram will do pleanty of that by itself).
Until you get the ram figured out there is no hope for a stable system. If you have bad ram then it will corrupt the system as fast as you can repair it.
If you have the hardware test disk it has a ram tester that can, depending on the system and disk, run in extended(on the menu) or looped mode(command l). It usually reports which stick of ram is bad. On a desktop this is a big deal.
On a laptop it is much easier. You usually have a limited number of ram slots. I don't know what mac you are running because you have not filled out any of the info for your profile.
Pull all but one stick of ram and run on the other to see if that helps. If no change, run on the other stick and see if that helps. If all the ram is non Apple then it could be either. Apple ram is usually, but not always, good ram that stays good. By the way, with the dry weather we are having it is important not to risk static zapping of your mac. The easiest way to ground yourself is to be bare foot then touch the power supply case or other metal interior surface of the computer before tackling the electronics.
I like Crucial Ram but OWC also has a lifetime guarantee and they stand behind the ram. If the vendor of replacement ram has a bench tester then that is the best you can do without putting the ram in your mac.
Once you get good ram in your mac then concentrate on the system. In my opinion, Disk Warrior is the only utility that one needs to purchase for X. It can keep fixing your directory but if the ram is bad X will keep getting corrupted again.
That the permissions are not running off of disk is, yes, a bad sign.
    When the ram is replaced;
If you have a backup hard drive I'd make sure that it has, at a minimum, all your user data. You can also do this with cd/dvd's.
Reformat the hard drive and zero it to map out bad blocks. The system and applications can be reloaded later and your user data can be imported to the clean, new system. That is what I would make my mind up on doing.
It may be possible to keep your current system running with good ram and Disk Warrior but the odds are that some files have been corrupted and will rear their ugly heads in the future.
    Just my 2 cents.

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
    A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least  two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • MBP having Kernel Panic (Crash) all the time due to Wireless card firmware.

    Hi all,
I am desperately needing helps from the experts here now. I have the latest santa rosa Macbook Pro. It has been crashing on me lately due to the wireless card firmware. I have run all the latest updates from software update including the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I have tried to reformat the hard drive and installed a fresh and clean Mac OSX. The crash still persists before AND after the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I mean I was not having this issue when I first bought the computer while others were whining all over the internet about this problem. When the fix came out, everyone
s problems seem to be solved but my problem arose . A recent Kernel panic crash log is as following:

A way to know that the crash is gonna happen is that the internet stops working and as long as I click on the wifi icon on the menu bar, The crash occurs. Could someone please help to put me out of misery please . Thank you so much for reading this and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    Have a nice day.

i would try this in a test user to see if the issue occurs (more than likely it will)also i would reset the smc and the pram
(test user) go to the apple then system preferences then accounts then in the bottom right hand corner you will see there is a lock click it and put in the password for the computer then click ok then click the plus sign and create the test user make sure that you check the box that says allow user to admin the account then click create account (if a message says something about automatic login click keep) then click the apple and log out then login to the other user.
(smc) you shut the computer down then you unplugg all the cables from the computer then you take the battery out with the battery out you hold the power button down for five seconds then you put the battery back then plug in the ac adapter then start the comptuer up and then plug everything else back in
(pram) you restart the computer holding down the apple option P and R keys till you hear the start up chime twice
if that does not work i would boot to the install disk one holding c and then click utilites from the top and select the mac hd and then verify disk and repair disk
if the issue still occurs then i would back all of the information on the computer up and erase and install
    hope this helps
