Do Apple desktops have built in wireless networking?

Like
you just connect to a wirelss network and you use the internet with out conneciting any cables
Like my friend has a HP desktop and it has built in wireless aka WIFI

On some Mac Pro models, the card was optiona.
So use the the info b j t provided above to read out your Mac's capabilities.

Hello! I have configured my Wireless network to support bonjour protocol. When I support mDNS in the same Vlan I can see the Apple TV with my iPhone, but I cannot see it with my iPad. Someone know if there is any different in the Bonjour protocol between the iPhone and the iPad???
It is like if the iPad changes the process at some point...
    Thank you!

You don't need to configure anything specific for it to work unless you had some special filtering in place already.
What do you mean specificly by can not "see" it with your iPad?

Your home network must have a wireless router somewhere in the house. All of your wireless devices use the same router password to connect to the network. That's where the password is stored and used. Log into your wireless network router and look under the wireless menu section. You should find your password there. If you have other wireless devices connected to your network maybe one of those will display the password. If your router is also password protected and you can't remember that either then your only solution is to reset the router to factory defaults and start over to rebuild your network. With security becoming more and more important these days most passwords are encrypted and not displayed in the open on any devices, including routers. It's extremely important that you remember or have the password written down somewhere and locked away for just such an occasion. Good luck.

  • Does my MacBook Pro OS X Lion 10.7.5 have built in wireless router?

I'm low tech. I'm trying to setup a new wireless printer. Never had one before.
I'm using an ethernet cable to connect to Century Link for my ISP.
The printer is setup, and its blue signal light is on.
Does my MacBook Pro OS X Lion 10.7.5 have built in wireless router, or do I
need to buy one? I thought all Pros had built in Airports?     Tks - Greg

You can start Internet Sharing from the Sharing pane of System Preferences; if you use the Mac as a router, it'll need to be on and awake for the devices connected to it to access the network.

  • Apple TV is killing my wireless network

I think my Apple TV is shutting down my wireless network. I've owned the Apple TV since April but the problems just began 3 days ago. When the Apple TV is connected to the network, the entire wireless network and internet connection is lost for all clients until I reset the router by unplugging the power supply. This happens every 30 minutes or so. When I unplug the Apple TV, the problems stop and the network is fine.
I own the Linksys WRT54G version 6 router. Firmware v1.02.2 is installed. I have 2 computers and one AppleTV. Computer one is a Dell laptop that is almost never turned on, the other is a Mac G4 Desktop that is connected to the router with a Cat5 cable, not wireless, and it runs 24/7. I have the G4 set to use DHCP to autoconfigure and the router is set up to allow 3 connections. There is no MAC filtering. DHCP server is enabled. SSID is broadcast. I'm using WPA security. The DHCP lease time is one day.
Has anyone else experienced these problems with an Apple TV??? -thanks

If setting your DHCP server to 50 users did not help, then I would suggest you try setting your Apple TV to a fixed LAN IP address, and see if that helps.  The reason for this suggestion is that some Apple products have had problems using DHCP assigned addresses from Linksys routers.
Linksys has some special rules for assigning fixed LAN IP addresses:
With Linksys routers, a fixed (static) LAN IP addresses must be assigned in the device that is using the address. So you need to enter the fixed address in the Apple TV, not in the router.
When using a Linksys router, any fixed LAN IP address must be outside the DHCP server range (typically 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.149), and it cannot end in 0, 1, or 255.
Therefore any fixed LAN IP address would normally need to be in the range of
    192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.99 or
    192.168.1.150 thru 192.168.1.254
assuming you are still using the default DHCP server range.
Also, in the computer, when you set up a static LAN IP address, you would need to set the "Subnet mask" to 255.255.255.0 and the "Default Gateway" to 192.168.1.1  and the "DNS Server" to 192.168.1.1
It is also important that no two devices on your network be set to the same static LAN IP address.
If the problem does not resolve with a fixed LAN IP address as described above, then in place of the "DNS server" address of 192.168.1.1  substitute the actual Internet DNS server addresses, as listed in the router on the "Status" tab, "Router" subtab.
    Hope this helps.
Since this is a relatively new problem, please let us know if this works or not.

  • Currently have house wide wireless network and using external HD (USB) for time machine. HD broken.  would Time capsule work with current routers etc or make them redundant?

I currently have a large house wide wireless network and I am using a dedicated Buffalo HD with USB for time machine.  The HD has gone bad and can't be repaired. I am thinking of replacing it with a Time Capsule.  Will this fit in with my current routers etc, render them redundent ?   I THOUGHT THAT THE HD I BOUGHT WAS OF GOOD QUAILTY BUT IT HAS BROKEN AFTER 2 YEARS. HOW LONG CAN ONE HOPE FOR A TIME CAPSULE TO LIVE (USING QUALITY SURGE DEVICES ETC) ?  Does one need to backup the backups?
ALSO: Is ther e any way to back up from Time Machine off site ( mobile me etc) in case the house burns down?

    Steve M. wrote:
I know I should have redundant backups and should probably have a second external HD and eventually will.
    Yes, that's best.
But for now, if I partition (I'm assuming I should) a new 1 TB external HD, how big should I make the TM partition vs. the SD partition at this point assuming I have under 100 GB on my internal Mac HD? Is this a feasible way of doing things here in the near term.
Your best bet is to make your TM partition 2-3 times the size of the amount of data you anticipate backing-up. Put it first on the drive; that way, later on you can delete the partition below it, expand the TM partition, and make a new, smaller partition for SD (or use the whole drive). See #1, #3, #5 and #6 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for details.
By the way, any recommendations on which peripheral HDs to consider? I was very surprised on a recent visit to my local Apple Store that they have a large stock of WD My Studio drives. I mentioned to an Apple sales person that I had always heard WDs were kind of a no-no among Mac users but she assured me the current crop of them were much improved. Any comment on that??
Most any drive will work with Macs, and Time Machine.
If you're going to put a "bootable clone" on it, be sure it's a bootable drive. Most PPC Macs can boot only from FireWire; most Intels can boot from F/W or USB. But some Western Digitals won't boot a Mac. Their list of which ones should and +should not+ boot: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787. But note the disclaimer that they don't support it +*at all.+*.
In addition, many of them have a built-in sleep mode that cannot be disabled, and sometimes interferes with Time Machine backups: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1376

  • Apple tv and a local wireless network

i'm trying to set up my apple tv and my macbook pro, but i have no internet connection where i'm at currently. i assumed you could simply set up a local wireless network, so i hooked up my netgear router and my macbook recognizes and well...the apple tv kinda freak out when the wireless router is on. it doesn't always respond to the remote. when it does find the wireless signal, it frequently resets itself and then stalls out again....when i turn the router off, the apple tv functions normally....with no content from my macbook though of course......
    any thoughts?

is there a better router to go with when trying to set up a local wireless network with no internet?
I use the Apple Airport Extreme. I love it, but many others like D-Link, Netgear..... I would look for an N router if your Netgear isn't. What is your Netgear hooked up to? That might be the problem. I also think that you might want to hook up the ATV2 wired and then restore it, and reenter all of the user and setup info afterward. It may not be the Netgear at all. If you restore the ATV2 and it still does it, then you can look at the Netgear and what it's hooked up to. No sense spending money if what you have works well. If you don't have Internet (I just noticed that statement above), I think you'll have issues with the ATV2. It has to have a way of connecting and phoning home to Apple, etc.

  • Trying to get my apple laptop to connect to wireless network

I have an Airport Express (AE) and have successfully set up a wireless network in which 3 other computers (my work laptop, my wife's work laptop, mother-in-law's laptop) are all able to connect to this wireless network.
However, I have been unsuccessful in trying to get my apple laptop to connect to the same wireless network.
I'd really like to unchain our apple laptop from my office.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Welcome to the discussions forum EdmundF.
Doesn't your home network name appear in your Airport menulet?

  • Have to create wireless network everytime I boot up?

    Hi
I have the 27" Quad core, if i create a wireless network and then switch off my iMac and use it the next day I have to recreate the network, but the odd thing is it doesnt do this every time, sometimes I turn it on and the wireless network is still there, any ideas in how to make the network permanent?
    Thanks

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
Open System Preferences (Apple Menu) then select Network.
Select your network access on the left, Airport / Ethernet / Firewire then where you see: Network Name click the pop up menu and select the Network you created. Then click the padlock icon bottom left in the window to prevent further changes.

  • Necessary to have the same wireless network name for using WDS?

I have set up two Airports in WDS mode. I did this so my ps3 could get on the internet via ethernet (its an older model, and doesn't have wireless, so you have to use an ethernet bridge). I set up the WDS fine, and my Airport extreme base station (the square one) is the WDS main, while as my old Airport extreme (snow) is the remote, which I use to run a cable from to my ps3 to access the internet. This works fine when I have the network names for each base station the same.
I was under the impression that you could have two different named wireless networks for two base stations (i.e .they have different names), as long as you have the MAC addresses set up correctly for the WDS settings (i.e. main and remote). However, when I do that, I can no longer access the ethernet from the remote base station on my PS3. I can only access the ethernet via my PS3 if I have the wireless network for each base station literally named the same. Seems kind of strange if you have the MAC addresses set up correctly for the main and remote, as shouldn't they be talking to each other via that mode, and not the actual wireless network name?
I would like to have each base station with its own wirelss network name, so I can differentiate between them. I get some strange issues when my airport card scans, it frequently switches between base stations, and this slows down certain programs (i.e. VPN connections for mail etc).
I set this up pretty literally from the airport guide from the apple site.

I was under the impression that you could have two different named wireless networks for two base stations (i.e .they have different names), as long as you have the MAC addresses set up correctly for the WDS settings (i.e. main and remote).
No that is not correct. Since the 2 are working together to create a single wireless network, they must use the same network name.

  • Please HELP.  Apple Tv can't find wireless network!

    Hello
Everything worked fine for a couple of weeks and now my Apple Tv refuses to detect my wireless network (which is working perfectly since my imac and my iphone use it as well.
i have tried to reboot apple tv, to disable security access on the network (airport extreme), i have restored factory settings on apple tv and finally i have also moved the apple tv away from a dvd palyer since some people suggested metal could have been the source of the problem... all to no avail.
are there any more suggestions before i ship this back to apple?
    thank you

Where you bought the devices is unlikely to stop them working together with one possible exception. In the USA wifi channels are restricted to channels 1 through 11, whereas in the UK (for example) wifi channels 1 through 13 can be used, so there exists the possibility that the extreme could be transmitting on (say) channel 13 and the tv might only be listening on channels 1 through 11.
Given you bought the extreme in the US and the tv in Europe I doubt this would apply unless you have fiddled with the location settings on these devices. I could see it being a possible issue if you'd bought the extreme in Europe and the tv in the US.

  • Desktop no longer sees wireless networks

My wireless was working fine last night. This morning it was connected to wireless networks but it was on a "limited connection" basis. I restarted my computer and now there are no networks displayed when I try and connect to wiress.

  • HT1595 Apple tv3 can't find wireless network

Apple tv3 can't find wireless network

can it connect if you connect it to the router by wire?
if the router is set not to broadcast SSID you have to manually type in the SSID
if the router is set to use mac filtering then you need to add the mac address of the appletv to it's list

  • Best way to have internet only wireless network

Our current way of configuration for this is standalone ap's with multiple ssid's. The main network ssid's are on the 10.0.0.0 networks. The internet only ssid is on the 192.168.1.0 network. ( this is a wireless network only,no wired) They all get there dhcp address from a layer 3 switch. To prevent the wireless 192.168.1.0 intenet only network from getting to the 10.0.0.0 networks, we just put a simple source & destination deny acl on the in vlan interface of the 192.168.1.0 network on the layer 3 switch.
Now that we are impementing a Cisco 2504 controller, the management and ap manger are both on the 10.0.0.0 network.( both on port 1 with dynamic ap manager enabled)  I can setup as many ssid's on the 10.0.0.0 network and they all work fine. But when I setup the 192.168.1.0 internet only ssid it will not connect. I'm assuming that its because the 192.168.1.0 network or anyone trying to connect and use that network has to go through the controller located on the 10.0.0.0 network. I'm thinking that the acl on the vlan interafce is the problem.
Please correct me if i'm wrong here on any of the above thinking. So, if I'm correct, what is the best way to setup a separate internet only network through the private networks? I'd appreciate any advice on this subject as I'm new to the lan controller way of doing things.
    Thanks

So it should be working, you may need to disable proxy on the WLC.  Controller > Advanced > DCHP and uncheck the proxy box.
If you do this, you need to make sure you have ip helper-address configured under the L3 interfaces
