Do Combo Updates include new hardware drivers / info?

So I'm having a debate with fellow OS X techies and we're split and would like to know a more definitive answer.
Do OS X Combo Updates actually take into account new hardware released after the .0 release of an OS? So for instance, 10.6 was released. Since then several Mac models have been introduced. Can I use the 10.6 retail DVD on the newer Mac models if I cannot locate those discs, and then run Combo Update to 10.6.4 on say a recent MBP? Or must I use the 10.6.3 MBP discs and move to 10.6.4 for true compatibility?
When 10.6.5 is released to the public, can that be used for the new Mac Minis that have a special build of 10.6.4?

Here is one case right now the Mid-2010 Mac Pro all run OS X builds that are later than 10.6.4 (and there are likely changes even here every two weeks as they ship). Drivers needed for new graphic cards (ATI 5870 and 5770) are newer than ATI drivers for say iMac 2010 that has an ATI graphics unit.
And changes to support new processors, memory configurations, native booting into 64-bit kernel mode, to name a few changes.
Eventually all of those changes should make their way into general available standalone updates (delta and combo) at some point.
As for your need to build images, I'll leave that to others to sift through. My gut feeling, that OS X Server is the only time/place that would fit in. Windows Home Server NAS products like HP Smart MediaServer NAS support TimeMachine, SuperDuper, and ability to manage a mix of Macs and PCs. Something an Xserve in a client-server environment, with even more tools to deploy and handle remove images and push updates (and store updates locally rather than each seat have to redownload all over again).
Nehalem family of processors shipped in early 2009, before that was Penryn and found in say Mid-2008 iMac, Early Mac Pro 2008 (I'm sure you know or can find that on Apple or even Wikipedia on Macs and Intel processors).

  • How to include required hardware drivers (eg Agilent E5515C) to installer?

Please advice how to include the reqiured instrument driver to the installer?

    Hi Eva,
Many instrument drivers that are specifically for LabVIEW are simply a group of VIs. Most of the time, when you use these VIs in a project, they are automatically included under Dependencies. LabVIEW should add only the VIs you used in your project and you can see what gets added by expanding Dependencies.
I’m not sure about the E5515C, but if it is similar to most drivers for Agilent equipment, you can probably manually add the libraries (.LLB) to the project under My Computer. By dragging and dropping a .LLB on My Computer in your project, you should see a folder created and that folder should contain all the VIs in that .LLB. These can then be set as source files in the installer and will be place on the target machine.
Finally, if your ultimate goal is to have the instrument driver installed on the target machine in the same way as it is on your development machine, this is probably best left as a separate install. The information in the two above paragraphs is relevant to simply distributing a working application not recreating a development environment.

  • Migrate Sun Cluster (+RACdisks to new hardware running Sun Cluster ( + RAC)

    Hello,
We have old hardware (v490s) running Sun Cluster 3.2 + Oracle RAC 10.2.0.4.0 connected to SAN. We need to move to T4. Oracle advised against including new hardware into existing cluster, so we are planning on building a new cluster with T4's, same software (Solaris 10, Sun Cluster 3.2, RAC 10.2.0.4.0).
When ready, we plan to shut down existing cluster, zone new cluster to existing disks and bring up everything on new hardware (simply stated).
    Will it work?
Any gotchas - like need to clear disk ids or Sun Cluster panicking? RAC panicking? Any reference docs out there?
    Thanks
    user12961096

Do we absolutely need that in our new setup or could we forgo that additional layer? Would Sun Cluster give us anything that the OS + RAC doesn't give us?Yes, Oracle Solaris Cluster does make things a lot easier. It looks after your device space and gives you consistent DID devices for CRS/RAC. It gives you the choice to use sQFS, raw metasets, or ASM. It has clprivnet which is a lot easier and performs better than an IPMP solution. The node failure detection time is <= 10 seconds which is quicker than CRS on it's own and it uses SCSI fencing instead of a STONITH approach. Finally, you have all the off the shelf agents that Solaris Cluster offers.
However, if you are only doing RAC and you just want ASM and you don't need the last few seconds of failure detection that OSC gives you and you think STONITH is good enough for your fencing purposes, then CRS on its own is perfect. There are many, many deployments both with and without OSC, it's not a simple yes/no answer.
Having worked for the Solaris Cluster group, I'm still slightly bias to including it rather than going without. Others have the alternate view! :-)
    Hope that helps,
    Tim

  • Install new hardware and update imac g3  os 9.2 to os 10 or get a pc

My dad owns an IMAC g-3 year (2000 or 2001) running os 9.2 that wont run his new scanner--"requires 10.1 os or later".
He is also not able to install the DSL modem program from Verizon as it also requires "10.1 mac os or later" to install---so he cannot download any firmware updates using the mac. He currently has 128 mb ram installed on this mac. By using his other computer--a pc--he and I were able to browse page after page of discussions and "support" etc on the MAC site but nowhere does it say--- how to play a dvd installation disk or even if this particular problem computer ever had a dvd capability--(if it ever did-- it does not work now)
--how much ram is required for os 10 (any version) for os 10 to work well with
--and even if he kicks out the 190.00 plus for the os 10 software and additional cdroms--if needed--that he will be able to use the discs purchased to update the firmware and software.
Other computer manufacturers offer on line profiling to get the computers capability and offer upgrade choices or a real person that walks you thru the process online or on phone--why not mac?
Anyone out there that wants to work for mac support?

  • HT4178 Updating NetRestore Images for New Hardware?

    Good Afternoon,
I've just taken over Mac Imaging from a colleague who's moved in to another department, we have 2 Mavericks images now, 1 for schools and 1 for corporate. They are easy to create (we build the users and software then capture the image with NetRestore on Mavericks Server) but everytime we get a new MacBook with updated hardware the image fails to go on the new machine (it is backward compatible with no issues).
I come from a Windows backgroud where we use SysPrep to make sure all images are hardware independent - there doesn't seem to be a tool which will do this for Mac, not easily anyway.
My colleague used to create 2 new images completely from scratch every time hardware changed, this to me seems like a waste of time, I would if possible like to see if we could just update the images (via a combo update or something?), run software updates and then recapture it, saving literally a days work every time a new piece of hardware comes out.
Has anyone done this effectively? I know their are 3rd party tools availible that may be able to help but if possible I would like to do it whilst still using NetRestore (our deployment team are familiar with this method).
    Kind Regards,
    Jon Roberts

Yes, your process as described seems appropriate. Have you tried this on an example? Have you run into any issues?

We have had some success building images entirely from media. We have an SIU worflow that makes an image directly from the latest OSX installer as downloaded from the App store. Plus a long list of application packages like Office and Adobe CS. So when we get a new version of OSX and/or an application package we just rerun the workflow. We do not install all this stuff over and over again on a "golden" machine du jour.
The (non-tirvial) cost of this approach is that we have to re-package all our apps for non-interactive installation. Most commercial applications are distributed in a manner assuming interactive installation on one Mac at a time. The benefit is that we get clean installs, reproducible results and fewer surprises. We have found the Composer tool from JAMF to be invaluable for creating these application packages.
Also, you can speed up SIU builds dramatically using solid state disk.

  • Can new windows drivers be installed without updating to leopard?

I was wondering if the new windows drivers on the leopard install disc can be installed in windows without upgrading tiger on the other partition?
I want to upgrade tiger to leopard but want to wait till i have more time to complete the process, but i do want to check out the new windows drivers now.

How would you extract the drivers from the Leopard disk?
Normally, you create/install the Boot Camp assistant, which extracts the drivers.
Anyone with Leopard installed can always supply anyone else with a new drivers disk, and, I would expect in time that the Windows system itself would be capable of obtaining the drivers. After all the main problem is that manufacturers have not yet written drivers for Windows on a Mac. Once the Mac hardware becomes "standard" there should be no problem using Windows update directly to get new drivers.
This is what I am expecting to happen with my 64-bit Vista install on this box.

Hi everyone, my cMBP is a mid 2012 15 iChat version, the screen brightness control and auto graphics switching functions r disappeared by themselves, until recently I heard about combo and delta update, so I hoping this update can solve my problem,
My os x is 10.8.3 out of the box n I haven't do any update yet,
So should I download delta 10.8.3 or 10.8.3 combo?
Will I able to download 10.8.3 delta in the same os x 10.8.3 system?
Should I straight away download combo 10.8.5 update or download 10.8.3 first  to prevent problems bring to the new os x version?
Or should I redownload the os x 10.8?
Does this combo update help me?
Btw my mac warranty will expired on mid April
    Thanks everyone for helping me!

I would download and install the 10.8.5 Combo Update. It's my preference as it contains all updates from 10.8.2 through 10.8.5.

I was attempting to backup my iphone 5 getting ready to update it to ios 7 and i accidentally restored it to the settings of my last phone which was an iphone 4s and it erased all my new pictures and info off my new phone and was wondering if anyone knows how i can get them back and restore it back like i has it?  Thanks

That means you have not a backup before accidentally restore your new iPhone 5.
So you should recover your new pictures and info with a third recovery tool.
This blog has a useful tool to meet you.
    http://easy-iphone-recovery.blogspot.com/2013/09/iphone-recovery-resource.html
In step 1, you should choose 'Recover from iOS Device' in the main interface and then following the steps to get your pictures and info back.

  • Hi, I have been trying to update many things on my 2009 white macbook. Everytime I do it tells me I need a different version. I don't know what versions I need or even where to begin or if I need to purchase new hardware? Any suggestions?

Hi, I have been trying to update many things on my 2009 white macbook. Everytime I do it tells me I need a different version. I don't know what versions I need or even where to begin or if I need to purchase new hardware? It says my version is 10.5.8. I have tried downloading 10.6 but not sure what to do. Everyone else seems to be updating there's and mine is way behind however it still tells me I have no software updates...Any suggestions?

You have to understand the difference between an Update and an Upgrade.
An Update is a free change to add to the base code or as a bug fix within an existing Operating System. Such as the .8 added to 10.5.
An Upgrade is a complete new Operating System that must be purchased. Such as 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
10.5 Leopard was based on Power PC code and was written to be able to run on both Power PC and Intel processors.
10.6 Snow Leopard has completely rewritten code and only runs on Intel Macs.
10.7 Lion used some 32 bit which allows it to run on Late 2006 through Early 2008 MacBooks and a lot of 64 bit code.
10.8 Mountain Lion is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.

  • After updating the new ios in my iphone5, i can't use my phone because of the hardware as per the MAC specialist told me.

I am currently using iphone5 and I updated it last Saturday (August 2, 2014) for the new ios. After a day, the problem came out wherein it is automatically turn off then when you open it, command errors are coming out. I tried to restore it using itunes but error is occurred during the restoration. The MAC specialist I consulted suggested me to trade in my phone but unfortunately I don't have any cash for it. Why is it like that, I just updated the new Ios then all of a sudden I can't use my phone at all... I hope Apple Company can help me, its not any misused problems but a hardware or technical one by Apple.

Yes lucky me . If all troubleshooting has been done in Resolve iOS update and restore errors and if you have at least taken it into a store where they could try a restore themselves then that would suggest a hardware fault with the iPhone.
If you are out of warranty then it is correct that they would quote you an out of warranty service fee. From here it would be a matter of trying the steps above and if you have already tried then doing the service when you do have the cash.

  • New VIA Drivers and Live-Update

I noticed the latest VIA drivers are not yet available for download using MSI's Live Update prgram. Is it ok to download them seperately from the official VIA site? Or should I just wait for the Live Updater to get them?
    Just Wondering...

     :D
I only used Live Update for a limited time ... mostly because there was too much time between launching an new driver and the driver becoming available through Live Update. The VIA drivers are available for more than a week, I think.
