Do High Quality Media Render files keep piling up?

I just noticed that a file I worked on over time, through a number or revisions, had Render: High Quality Media files from all kind of dates. It added up to 15GB. I deleted it and re-rendered and it came to 1 GB. Is it possible that FCPX isn't replacing any old renders and just gobbling up disk space? Is there a setting I'm missing?

My suspicion is that it may have something to do with your scratch disk filepath. What is your scratch disk filepath - drive name, everything...

  • Can I move the High Quality Media folder in Finder?

When importing files for a large project (music festival, 15+ hours of footage) I left the high quality media transcoding option ticked and, with only half the footage in, I have a nearly full disc (external 1TB Lacie little big disc).
I don't intend to use these files until final rendering (I use proxy editing) so can I temporarily move this folder/files off the disc in Finder until I'm ready to use them or will this upset FCP X? Is there a better way to do it within FCP?

If you're going to edit entirely in proxy, there's no point of making optimized media. When you're done editing, switch to original playback. When you export your master file from FCP, it will export ProRes generated from the original media, which is the same as optimizing it. The only factor is if you're going to do color correction and effects in FCP, then you will want to do that on optimized media if you can rather than proxy media. There is no way around that. You will then need the ProRes files at that stage, not when you export.

  • Render files keep missing - help!

I'm trying to export (using compressor), and every time I try, I get an error in FCP that "some files went offline - render files".
I've tried everything I could thing of. I've rendered, I've re-rendered, I've deleted all render files and started over - nothing.
The render folders are names right and in the right place. I even took the tower to an Apple store for tech support, and they agreed everything looked good, as far as folder names/placement. They didn't know what was going on either.
So when I try to reconnect the media after the error message pops up, I get another message that says "there are no clips selected that have files associated with them". I've even used the render manager, deleted the clips, and re-rendered.
Nothing seems to work. What makes it more puzzling is that the audio render folder keeps popping up in the trash. I've moved it to the right place, and poof - it appears in the trash bin again. And some other render files seem to be going there instead of the render folder.
So how do I remedy this? I tried deleted all the render folders, and that didn't help. I'm going to try it again in a few minutes, just in case.
When I go into File/Reconnect media, I get a bunch of render files missing, along with a bunch of my media files listed under 'online'.
If I reconnect the online files, I have to render, and the whole thing starts over again. There is no red render bar in the timeline. The video plays audio and video just fine - just can't export. Any ideas?

My suspicion is that it may have something to do with your scratch disk filepath. What is your scratch disk filepath - drive name, everything...

  • High quality media vs low quality media

    Hi,
I have a probably somewhat naive question about DVD media. I'm sure that there is a whole range of quality amongst the various suppliers. How does "high" quality distinguish itself from "low" quality (other than price, of course)? In other words, does a high quality DVD-R simply produce fewer coasters? Or will it also have a longer "shelve-life"? Are there cases where a low quality DVD will burn fine but will then contain errors, or can I assume that once the burn was successful and verified, I'll have a reliable disk, no matter who the supplier was?
I'm asking this because I could live fine with a cheaper DVD and higher rate of coasters, as long as the disk is reliable once it is burned.
Thanks for any insights you may have on this.

  • FCPX 10.1 RENDER FILES KEEP DISAPPEARING

I keep having an issue where when I restart FCPX I have to re-render items that were previously rendered in the timeline before I closed FCPX.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?
    Thanks,
    Shawn

    Problem really makes me angry.
Deleted ALL Rendering FIles from Event (not only the UNUSED). Quit FCP X. Removed the application altogether. Deleted Caches and Preference Files. Ran PrefsManager from Digital Rebellion to remove other Prefs files (like Motion).
Downloaded a fresh version off the Mac AppStore. Opened my last used Library with Events and Projects. Rendered everything (always keep an eye on your embedded compound clips - they do not render automatically when you hit Shift-Ctrl-R in your timeline).
Quit FCP X and reopened. Guess what? Approx. 20% of the timeline show that orange bar. And - no - it doesn't update when you mouse over the corresponding clips in the timeline. Did a full render again. Quit and reopen. Again - parts of the timeline show the orange bar. Interestingly enaugh: they are different parts from what had been indicated before.
Don't know what to do. Keep FCP X open all the time? Doesn't sound like a solution to me and my MacBook (MBP Retina, 16 GB, 768 GB SSD, Mavericks 10.9.1, FCP X 10.1.1). Performed all the usual procedures like repairing rights, resetting PRAM, deleting Caches, even boot-up in Safe Mode - to no avail.

  • Render files keep going off-line

    OS 10.5.4 FCP 6.0.4
Deleted prefs file, but everytime I quit and relaunch FCP, the files I rendered out previously are offline.
I reset all scratch disk locations still getting same results.
    Anyone have a suggestion?

Could be a problem with the drive that the renders reside on. Do a repair on the drive using the disk utility. Get DiskWarrior and run that on the drive. Repair permissions.

  • What is "High Quality" standard for 150 minimum files?

To be listed on iTunes U, there is a requirement of a minimun 150 "High Quality" media files. What is the description of "High Quality" ? Is this a technical standard or a content standard?

  • How to view FCPX Render Files?

To start with a simple question: In what format does FCPX store render files? I used to be able to view them in Quicktime with older versions of FCP. How can I view these files in FCPX? These are the sort of large files that show up in your "High Quality Media" folder with names like "Frame 28672 - 29695"
I had a catastrophic hard drive crash. The footage was lost but some fairly recent render files from the project were on a separate drive and remain intact. I also have the project file. Isn't there SOME way to fool FCP into showing these render files in the sequence and letting me at least view them (in sequence) in FCPX and then perhaps somehow, even if it's just real-time recording from a screen-capture program or by outputting through the display port, retrieve some of the lost footage? I don't need the audio, FYI.
I would extremely, extremely grateful for any help.
    Thanks,
    PBW

If you select an event instead of a project, the command reads "Delete Event Render Files...".
You can select more than one event and delete the render files for all the selected events.

  • My FCP X render files are taking up my hardrive space!

When I use HD footage for my Final Cut Pro projects it takes up 20 GB per project....
I have a 3 TB external Hardrive, is their a way I can use that to move my render files to it and still be able to edit my project?
Can i delete my render field without messing up my project? Cant I just serenader them later?
My high quality media folder takes up 50 gbs, can I move that to my external drive then delete off my computer? When I edit i will have my drive plugged in.
    Thanks.

You should definitely use the external drive - preferrably it should be connected via USB3 or Thunderbolt.
How you move things from here to there depends on what version of FCP X you are using.
In 10.1.x, assuming everything is inside the library, all you have to do is quit FCP X, drag the library to the external drive, let it copy over.
Then double click on the new library in the external drive and make sure everything works. After that you can delete the old one.
Regarding render files, you can delete them at any time, they can always be regenerated.

  • Where are my render files saved?

I have 4 Hard drives in my mac pro.  All but the fourth is pretty full and one is my OS and apps.  I started a new project on the 4th hard drive.  My render files will also be saved on this 4th hard drive.  Is that correct?  If not where do I change the render file destination?  For some reason I was working on this new project on the 4th hard drive and I got a message indicating that I was running out of room on my 3rd hard drive.  I was a bit confused by this since this new project was started on the 4th hard drive.  Another question is can I delete my old render files from a project but the project still remains entact?  It would just have to be rerendered, correct?  Thanks for any help you can give.  you guys always seem to enlighten my amateur knowlege.
    Scott

The 3rd dive will get down to mb's left.  I deleted some render files from old projects on the 3rd hard drive so I am back up to 10 gb's.  I am not trying to use the 3rd hard drive any more unless I have to access an old aperture library.  When I go to the render files of a project, there are 3 files (high quality media, Peaks Data and thumbnail media).  Can I delete all these render files without deleting the project or the contents of the project?  Thanks again.  You have always been a big help.

  • How can I replace one low quality source with another high quality one ?

Am I really this dumb or is it really this hard ?
I have one timeline / project / edit that essentially references one long source clip / event / file.
I have a newer higher quality transcoded version of the same source and want to replace the original lower quality version and end up with the same edited result just with better quality images !?
It's the same frame rate and image dimensions  but "relink" tells me the new file is not "similar" enough and won't do it !
Why is this so hard ? Is there a way to export a good old fashioned edl and then just reconform using the new source ?
What if I wanted to to replace low res offline footage with finished colour-corrected material and output a finished master - would that be this clueless as well ?
Please let me know the problem is between the chair and the keyboard - not between the hard disk and the power cord !

Guessing that when you created the higher quality media, it was done outside of FCP and probably changed some important metadata that the app is looking for. Or perhaps there is a difference between the original audio and the new audio.
Anyway, Luis' advice about the replace edit seems like the easiest solution.

The usual way to do offline online is within FCP – creating the proxies and then using Preferences to switch back to and from.
If you sent it out for grading, the Relink should work fine. If you haven't seen this kb doc, it's worth reviewing.

  • FCP X movie files keep becoming "Modified"

I've been running into a strange issue where my movie files after import and then being turned into proxy files become "Modified Files". I can seem to relink them and the issue reoccurs after deleting the offending file and re-importing it (then transcoding to proxy).
Any suggestions about what might be causing this issue and how to resolve it? I have a fast approaching deadline and I'd like to resolve this ASAP!

I just found the solution in another thread. In Finder, you need to go into the specific event, select Transcoded Media> High Quality Media. There you will find the  files that are appearing as modified. Just move them to the trash and re-open Final Cut. Everything should be back to normal.
This just happened to me after creating a multicam clip within FCP X. I had never had this happen until today, after udating to Mavericks, so I can't help but think there is a connection there...

  • What settings do I need for high quality web video?

I've created a video via animoto.com for my website. The video resolution they recommend for web is 432 x 240 @ 15 fps. I used this and it's not as crystal clear as I'd like. Still looks pixelated a bit and I'd like a higher def version. So I downloaded the hi res version (864 x 480 @ 24 fps). This looks great but takes forever to load due to buffering. Then the video stops every few seconds. I understand this res is not meant for web.
What is the resolution I need for best quality & fast loading? I've seen great videos on the web before that loaded very quickly. This is what I'm looking for. I have Quicktime Pro for Mac and can pretty much save in any formats & resolutions. So what's recommended?
    Thanks!

    Hi
    There are some important things.
    • Set down burn speed to x1. In iDVD08 You can do this in preferences.
    • Use high quality media. I only use Verbatim
    • Use right type of DVDs. I only use DVD-R (Single Layer)
    • Best quality - I use Pro-encoding Quality.
    • IMPORTANT: Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Your internal (start-up) hard disk
    • Use a CD/DVD cleaning disk from time to time
    • Don't burn more than three DVD at a time then let Your DVD-burner rest in 15 minutes to cool down.
    Good Luck

  • Keeping High quality photo resolution?

I made a movie in iMovie of all still photos and music.  I have always just exported the movie to media browser but I now have imovie 11 and looked at a tutorial telling me to send it directly to idvd.  My photos are really high quality (large files)  - is that the best way to keep the quality of the photos or should I export to quicktime and customize the settings for an HD movie?  Sorry- I don't understand compression  and such, but I would love to keep the quality as high as possible.
    THANKS

    Hi
There are several levels on this Q:
    • DVD is as standard (whatever program used to author it) - interlaced SD-Video (at its best)
(HD-DVDs was a very short lived format and needed dedicated HD-DVD players from Toshiba to be played (at all))
    • iMovie'08 to 11 - has no way to Export this known to me - discard every second line in the Picture resulting in even more loss
(I rather use iMovie HD6 or FinalCut - as they can deliver)
    • Sharing to iDVD (as described in tutorials) has always resulted in degraded quality toi me - Whatever iMovie version used - especially if no Ken Burns effect is used (I never use this)
    So I do
    • in iMovie'08 to 11: Share to Media Browser and as Large (NOT HD or other resolutions as this too degrades quality)
_iMovie HD6 - just close it - open iDVD and drop Movier project icon (with a Star on it) into it. So much better result
_FinalCut Express or Pro - Export as QuickTime mov - NO QuickTime conversion ! ! - Use this .mov file in iDVD
    Yours Bengt W
