Do I always have to crop when I print?

Hi,
I'm trying to print photos and I find that every size of photo and photo paper I select involves cropping my original photo in some way. I'm frustrated because I'm very careful about what I photograph and want to print exactly what I saw in the camera when I took the shot. Any ideas? Thanks!

If it's any consolation, this has been a problem since the days of Matthew Brady. However, in the past it was done in the lab and you never analyzed the prints enough to realize what was done. You just assumed that you accidentally cut off Aunt Sue's feet. The problem is that the aspect ratios of commonly-available paper do not match the aspect rations of film or CCD frames. The easiest way to understand this is to consider a 1:1 aspect ratio. That means that the width is 1X the height (i.e., same size, as in "square"). Now, IF your film/CCD frame is square, it will produce a square picture. But you want to print on 8X10 paper! You have two choices - print small and leave a large blank space or print large and cut off (crop) a portion of the photo.
Professional wedding photographers use "4X5" cameras. The film frame is 4 inches by 5 inches. That's great for printing a 4X5 print or, more likely, an 8X10 print. However, there's no way that you can print a 4X6 without cropping.
Film cameras that use 35 mm. have film frames that are 24 mm. X 36 mm. (the "35 mm." figure is total film width). In any event, 24X36 is 2X3, which is great for printing on 4X6 paper but lousy for 8X10. Most digital cameras have CCD frames with a 3X4 aspect ratio and there just ain't no paper with that ratio!
Even 4X6 paper is relative new (ten years or so). Previously, the paper that resembled 4X6 was 3.5X5 which is not a true 2X3 ratio.
My digital camera allows me to take photos with the same aspect ratio as the paper that I intend to use and I typically have it set for 2X3 for 4X6 prints. Unfortunately, when I get a prize-winner and I want to print an 8X10, I'm screwed. An 8X10 is actually an 8X12 with two inches cut off. (Actually, I get the photos printed professionally and I get true 8X12 prints but there are no 8X12 frames so I get my prints mounted and I display without a frame.)

  • FBL3N : i have a problem when i print a report

    Hi Gurus,
    I have a problem when i print a report from Tcode : FBL3N
    - i didn't have the last line of the report
    - i have two pages : i want just one because it is a small report
    I choosed this Format : X_65_200
Please help me to solve these issues.
    Thanks.

Try to choose a layout that has 65 lines.
If the report is too wide you might change the line layout (take out columns you do not need) until it is ok to print on 1 page.

  • Why does iCal always show 12:00am when I print calendar?

When I print a calendar month or email an event, the info shows a time of 12:00AM, as well as the actual correct time of appointment.  Can I change something in Preferences to rectify this problem?  Or what are other suggestions to fix this?

Damon's post is correct, but you don't have to disable the Time Zone to get this to work. Just set the time zone there in addition to the clock app. (I had choosen a time zone in the clock app, but the Date & Time - Time Zone value was empty and I was 'losing' 3 hours.)
    Settings -> General -> Date & Time -> Time Zone -> (Enter/pick a city)
    It just works (now)!

  • IPhone Calendar Events ALWAYS have sound even when event on the Mac does not.  How do I turn sound OFF on these events?

I make a new event, I set the Alert = Message (NOT "message with sound").  When event happens on the iMac there is no sound.  Same event, syched to the iPhone, has sound.
I have deleted events, recreated, synched.  Absolutly certain Alert is "message only."  No change in behavior.
I have checked all preferences. iCal is set to automatically add an alert but I make sure I add the alert myself without sound.
I just found the iPhone settings/sounds/calendar.alerts and I set this to "vibrate only."  I assume this will shut off the sound on ALL calendar alerts.  That's not really what I want to do (I want sound on some events, just not on every event) but if that's the only option available I'll take it.
Can I get the iPhone to do what I tell it to do instead of overriding my settings?

  • Would it be possible to have browsing options on the bottom of the screen like the iPhone and iPod?  You always have to stretch when going back to a page.

This is just a suggestion. How would we make suggestions to apple on things like this. It would be soooo convenient to have as an option.

Never mind. I found out how.

  • I always have error 1009 when downloading from apple and iTunes and no installing happens ,why?

When downloading from apple and iTunes stores error1009 shows up and no download happens

iTunes Store: Error (-50) when downloading purchased videos
Last Modified on: April 24, 2007
    Article: 303887
    Symptom
The following alerts may appear when trying to download purchased videos from the iTunes Store:
"There was an error downloading your purchased music. An unknown error occurred (-50)."
This can happen when the connection timeout occurs while downloading purchased video content from the iTunes Store.
    Products affected
    iTunes Store
    iTunes for Windows
    iTunes for Mac OS X
    Purchased video content
    Solution
Deleting the cached video files of the download, and starting the download again from the beginning, often will resolve this issue.
To find the cached video downloads:
Navigate to the downloads folder on your system. This folder can be found in the following locations:
    Mac:
    ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Downloads
Note: The tilde (~) refers to your Home directory.
    Windows Vista:
    \Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Downloads\
    Windows XP and 2000:
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Downloads\
Locate the folder that contains the cached video file for this purchase.
In Windows Vista, the folder will be named for the purchased video, and the name will end with .tmp.
    Example: The Dundies.tmp
In Windows XP and Windows 2000, the folder will be named for the purchased video, and the name will end with .m4v.tmp.
    Example: The Dundies.m4v.tmp
Move the .tmp folder for the affected purchased video to the Trash or Recycle Bin.
    Open iTunes.
From the Store menu, choose Check for Purchases.
Enter your account name and password and click the Check button.

  • Will I always get color discrepancies when lab printing images softproofed on a 75% on AdobeRGB monitor?

    Hi,
I am struggling to get  printed output from a professional printing service to match what I see when I softproof on my monitor. The printed image always looks considerably more green and warm, although whites are ok. Blue skies tend to get warm greenish. The printed image often looks like a warm instagram filter had been applied.
I have two (different generation) Dell U2412M monitors (Dell U2412M = Standard gamut = 71% NTSC, 74.3% Adobe RGB, 95.8% sRGB).
These are the steps I have taken to try to achieve color consistency between monitor and print:
I have calibrated and profiled with a Spyder 3 Express using BasICColor Display 5 software, previously also used the Datacolor software that came with the calibrator. After this, what I see on my monitor "looks normal" (skin tones, landscapes etc.)
I shoot RAW with a Sony NEX6, develop in Lightroom 4 using ProPhoto 16 bit color space.
I softproof in Lightroom using an ICC file provided by the printing service.
I use Lightroom to print to file tagging it with AdobeRGB profile. Either as TIFF or as JPG 100%.
I print with the direction to the printer to "not make any auto corrections to my file".
    I have Windows 7 64bit.
I thought this would mean that I would get - probably not perfect - but at least a very strong match between softproof and printed image.  But I do not.
Are these rather strong color discrepancies to be expected given my hardware?
Is my Spyder broken (it's out of warranty)?
    Or is my workflow erroneous?

Could be the calibration targets (how you asked to celibate white point etc). Could be the output. Could be the ICC Profile. Could be your file. You have to decide which is which.
Start here: Why Are My Prints Too Dark
Then download a good color reference file like this one: http://www.digitaldog.net/files/2014PrinterTestFileFlat.tif.zip
Soft proof and see if any green or odd color cast appear. If so, probably the  profile but use it and have a print made. The output should look good (neutral in neutrals, reds that don't appear yellowish etc).
Generally speaking, if you send Adobe RGB (1998) and the other side assumes it is sRGB, you will end up with desaturated colors. This isn't the fault of Adobe RGB but rather assuming that data is sRGB which it isn't.

  • When form is generated unbound items always have maxlength=2000

When form is generated unbound items always have maxlength=2000
When generating forms in Designer using the Headstart templates & libraries any unbound items when viewed in Form Builder have a maxlength=2000. The width property specified in Designer for each unbound item is ignored. The item max length is subclassed from the object library setting CGSO$DEFAULT_ITEM. Can anyone tell me why this happens and any known workarounds.
    Thank You
    Eoin Smyth

It sounds like a problem with Designer. What release are you using? The object CGSO$DEFAULT_ITEM has width = 2000 in the object library for Headstart. However, Designer should be overriding that value with the value from the repository. Please submit this same question on the Designer discussion forum and see if anyone there has experienced it. Be sure to mention which version of Designer you are using.

  • Always have Permission Errors running Apple Disk Utility

I always have Permissions errors when running Apple Disk Utility. Even after a clean install (and restore of User prefs using Time Capsule).
Most of the errors are "Repaired" but are still there if I "Repair Permissions" immediately again.
Is this a problem that I can just ignore of should I try and rid my system of them?
    For example:
Permissions differ on “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Support/Rem ote Desktop Message.app/Contents/Resources/pl.lproj/UIAgent.nib”; should be -rw-r--r-- ; they are drw-r--r-- .
    Repaired “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Support/Rem ote Desktop Message.app/Contents/Resources/pl.lproj/UIAgent.nib”
The above error will still be there if I re-repair.

You can just ignore them all.

  • Problems with graphics when I print

    Hi,
I have a problem when I print out a document that containing a graphic element, in this case a diagram. The bars doesn´t look the same on the screen as it does on the printed paper. I suspect that it could have to do with the postscript in the diagram. Is there some way I could turn the graphics in my PDF, to become just graphic (plain JPEG) and still have my text editable? I have found a way to turn the hole PDF into a none editable PDF, but my wish is only to do it with the diagrams.
I hope there is someone out there with a solution.
    Best regards,
    Martin

Starting with the image itself, what kind is it? Where is it located, locally or on a network? How is it inserted in the FM file, i.e.  by reference or as an OLE object?
Is this a single file or a book with multiple chapters? If it's multiple chapters, does the graphic behave correctly when PDFing the individual chapter? Are there other images of the same type and location that do print correctly?

  • Is it possible to have the crop marks where you want when making a PDF?

Is it possible to have the crop marks where you want when making a PDF?
So if I have an Indesign document 84x55 with a 3mm bleed but I want a PDF from that document to crop at 85x55 (adding .5mm to the left and right of the PDF), the crop marks are offset by 3mm but I want the left and right crop to be .5mm out into the bleed and not at the document edge.
Resizing the Indesign file is ruled out for the moment.
    Thanks, Tim

The automatic crop marks will always indicate the trim size of the document as defined in Document Setup, so the simple answer is no. You will need to draw custom crop marks in the slug area. You can set the slug area my clicking More Options in Document Setup.
This is a highly unusual request. The purpose of crop marks is to indicate the one and only trim area for the page. Why do you want crop marks that don’t match the document size?

The figures you mention only make sense on your intranet.  Are you still using the same wireless router.  The verizon one is somewhat limited as far as max wireless-n performace.  For one thing it only has a 2.4 radio.   I like many people who wanted wireless-n performance before they even added a wireless-n gigabit router, have my own handling my wireless-n network.

If you have Pages you can create customs pages for your book as TD suggested. If you have Pages from iWork 09 or 11 this app will add 80 or so additional frames to those offered:  Frames and Strokes Installer. Don't use it on the latest Pages version, however.
This tutorial shows how to create a custom page with the theme's background: iP11 - Creating a Custom Page, with the Theme's Background for an iPhoto Book.  Once the page is complete to get it into iPhoto as a jpeg file follow these steps:
Here's how to get any file into iPhoto as a jpeg file:
1 - open the file in any application that will open it.
2 - type Command+P to start the print process.
3  - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
NOTE:  If you don't have any of those options go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Save PDF to iPhoto 300 DPI.workflow.zip
Unzip the files and place in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
4 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered).
5 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto. For books to be printed choose 300 dpi.
