I have decided to get a MBA for portability etc. I also have iPad2 and iPhone. Currently withough a desktop?
So do I get a top spec MBA and thunderbolt display, and run my iPad/phone from there? Is getting an iMac just duplicating unneccessarily?

Well, the iMac isn't very portable, but far more computer than an MBA, & you can use it's monitor for TB enabled or MiniDisplay Port enabled Macs or PCs.

I've been a computery guy for some time. I am going from being a serious gamer that built a custom gaming PC that cost $3,500+ to selling said gaming PC and having no computer at all. I am giving up gaming to return to school and would like to attend med school when I finish undergrad. Anyhow, since I will have no computer at all, I would like to get an iMac 21.5 w/ 256GB flash and 8GB RAM to keep on my desk at home, and then get a Macbook Air 13.3 with the i5, 256GB Flash, and 8GB RAM to use at school and carry about etc.
I will be working full time in addition to going to school full time, and will be traveling on public transit and outdoors quite a lot. My thinking is that since the Macbook will be somewhat more susceptible to damage/theivery, etc. than for people who only carry it between school/home and their car, it will be good to have a desktop to use at home and as a backup. I do watch a fair amount of streaming media at home (although this will be more infrequent going to school + work), and would appreciate the larger screen and the ability to have a "base" at home without having to get out the Macbook and hook up the charger, etc. Also, I would prefer to put fewer cycles through the Macbook's battery which using a desktop at home would help.
I'll be doing pre-med undergrad studies, so I'll be doing average student activies...MS Office, music, streaming, surfing etc. No games.
I'm just wondering if I'm going to be overdoing it getting both. I will probably get between $600-1K for the sale of my gaming PC, and a $200 statement credit on the card I'll use, which will help offest the cost of both, but I've been getting mixed opinions as to whether I should get both. I'm not rich, but I do make a half decent living and will be working during undergrad (about 5 semesters left). Plus 0% APR until August 2015 so I can pay over a few months without penalty + education discount.
Yes, I'm aware that med school is a lot of debt and I have that to look forward to.
Anyway, I'm just asking for additional opinions really to see if I'm being wasteful/crazy. I can see myself using both.
ThanksMy suggestion would be to get a MP Air or MB Pro and then get an external display to use when you are home. This would be less expensive and easier to mainting. You can run the laptop in clamshell mode and have the best of both world while still at home. Of the two, I'd recommend a MBP for it's power and display, however a powerful MBA may be OK too.

What should I know about getting my imac and powerbook repaired?

Just an update re my 2 computers. My macbook pro that refused to "wake up" or start has returned from apple and diagnosed as a problem with my "logic board" and has been returned repaired in warranty.
My imac who exhibited the ticking sounds and eventual failure to start is getting the hard drive replaced. I am being charged for 2 hours labour which comes to $300 aud.
Finally, while this is good news I am left feeling a bit uneasy. Can you advise me if 2 hours is an accurate time frame? And while I never save my passwords are they in there "somewhere?"
Thanks again for everyone who advised me with the problems I have experienced! And the wireless network is going strong with my notebook and my partner's pc.

Can't even get my iMac and don't know why
It is fairly impossible for me to find a forum that matches my particular issue. I thought maybe someone here could help me.
I was attempting to order a refurbished iMac from the apple.com/ca/ as I live in Canada. I don't have much money so any little bit helps and the $200 savings meant I could actually afford to replace my aging G4 Mac mini. The refurbished iMac I picked out was quoted online at $1099 canadian, the same unit is $999 on the American site. When I placed my order including all recycling fees and shipping I was quoted $1156 and with my tax rate that came to $1213.80. Which was just enough for me to afford. I was going to finally get that new iMac I've longed for. Sadly my order was declined. I promptly contacted my bank to find out what had gone they informed I had been charged $1346 because of exchange rate on the order I was making. Exchange rate on a price quoted in Canadian dollars??? I then contacted Apple sales by phone and told them my issue and they informed that all those prices are in Canadian funds and they too tried to place my order and once again it was declined and no one not the rep I was talking to not his support staff could explain why apple was charging an exchange rate on something that is clearly advertised in Canadian Dollars. In fact if this is an accurate cost it would mean that Apple is selling me a refurbished computer at the cost of a brand new Apple Computer but how am I even to trust that price to be accurate too. I feel deeply wronged here and lied to.Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

I want to get an iMac to learn Logic Pro primarily and gaming secondly
I am new to all this (computers, Logic Pro and video games) but I want to learn. Is an iMac a good computer to run Logic Pro (I am also considering Mac mini)? I am also wondering about the nvidia geforce gtx 780m with 4 gb dedicated ram. How many years down the road will this graphics card be good for. From what I hear pc gamers have to periodically be upgrading things like graphics cards on their computers to be able to play newer games in the future, but I don't have that option with say this graphics card on the 27 inch imac, so I guess my question is, for how long will this nvidia geforce gtx 780m with 4 gb dedicated ram be good for before it becomes obsolete, 3 years, 5 years ,maybe more or less I do not know. I was thinking about getting a Mac mini for the Logic Pro and getting a play station 4 for gaming or just getting thr iMac and use it for both Logic Pro and gaming and forget about the play station 4. You are better off getting a dedicated gaming box for gaming than using a Mac for heavy gaming.
Unless you go with a top of the line iMac with just about all of the optional components, Macs do not make great heavy gaming machines. Plus, a gaming box is sooo much cheaper than a Mac for gaming.
For using Logic, I would just go for the 21 inch screen iMac and get it with the optional full 16 GBs of RAM and optional i7 CPU and, if you can afford all of the options, get this iMac with the optional Fusion drive, too!
The combination SSD and hard drive in the fusion drive will help make up for the slower 5400 RPM drives that they are putting into only the 21 inch screen models.
With this configuration, this iMac would last you, at least, 5 years. -
How do I get the iMac to display thumbnails and not an icon of jpeg photos?

I just purchased my first Mac, an Imac. I was browsing through a folder, using Finder, containing photos files from my latest trip.
Under Windows, I used to tell Windows Explorer to show thumbnails of the photos.
How do I get the iMac and Finder to show the thumbnails? It only wants to show a silly jpg icon which doesn't tell me much about what the photo looks like.

I have a folder of JPEG photos on my HD. This folder was created over a year ago when I was using Panther.
When I open it and select "Show View Options" I get a different window with options like "Date Created" and "Date Modified" etc.
There is no preview option or a slider to alter the icon sizes - merely a choice of large or small icons.

I have photos on my iPad (the first apple device in our household) and then added an iMac and a Macbook air to our network. We have an airport 2TB back up device. How do I get all of my photos on all devices. My original iPad has images that my 2 newer devices do not have on iphoto.

How are the images stored on your original iPad? Are they in the camera roll, in events downloaded using the camera connection kit, or are they in albums synced to your ipad from a computer?
If the photos are in the camera roll or in events downloaded from a camera, you can transfer them to your iMac and MBA by directly connecting the iPad using USB. Then you can download the photos to iPhoto like from a camera.
Only, if your photos have been synced to the iPad from a computer, you will have to save them first to the camera roll; then you can download them by connecting the iPad via USB.
What IOS version has your iPad?
For new photos you might consider using Photo Stream to transfer your photos between the devices.

I previously bought Aperture 3 and installed in on an iMac and a MBP. I just bought a new MBA to replace the MBP, but the MBA doesn't have enough memory for me to do a complete restore of the MBP on the MBA. So I am trying to find a way to deactivate the serial code or Aperture 3 on the MBP so I can reinstall Aperture 3 on the MBA. I have been searching forums and google and I have not been any answers. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
How did you buy Aperture? Did you buy it from the App Store? Then you can download it again on your MBA, if you sign into the App Store.
If you bought Aperture buy buying a licence key to unlock the trial, try if this download link for the trial version still works: if yes, you can unlock it with your serial number:

And if you own the boxed DVD installer , use the DVD to install Aperture on your MBA. If the installer does not work - and you get the message
"check with the developer to make sure Aperture works with this version of Mac OS X"
you may have a problem with an expired developer certificate (they expired mid march).
To fix this, set the Date in " SystemPreferences -> Date&Time" to a date well before March 2012 and run the Installer again. If that succeeds and Aperture now runs, reset the date to the current date.
You can see your serial number in the "About" panel in the main Aperture menu bar on your MBP:
Aperture > About Aperture.
For the "invaldid serial number" see these links: You may have read the letters incorrectly - some are look alike, "1" or "I", "0" or "O"; your shift-lock key may be set.

I have an imac and am using iphoto. Currently I am having a problem with one particular album which shows in the main part of the window a triangle with an exclamation point. The two photos are at the bottom of the main window in the same area where the "info" "edit" "create" area is. I can see the two photos but I can not get them back into the main part of the window. I can't drag them anywhere either. I can't double click or right click on either of the two photos either. All I can do is click on either one and they get a little bigger. Before I saw the exclamation point in the main body of the window all I get is two squares with nothing in them and the entire border is made up of dashes. Can someone help me?
Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory. -
I have an imac and a macbook pro. my creative suite 5.5 design premium is on them both. I'm about to take them in to the apple store because they are running bad and have them completely restored to factory settings. when I get them back will i be able to re-install my adobe creative suite to both of my computers using my same product code from when i first bought it?
Yes. Just make sure to deactivate the license on both systems using Apple menu --> Deactivate while one of the suite programs is running.

I've recently been given a macbook pro from uni, with lots of adobe software on. I want to pair it with my iMac which has music etc and is it possible to get the software to the imac and the files to the macbook?Giving me the best of both :-)
You would need the original installation disks or files for the Adobe software to get it onto your iMac, and having it on two computers may not be allowed by your university's licensing. Talk to whoever issued the MacBook.
As to the music, just copy it over to the MacBook, either via Home Sharing, file sharing, or an external storage medium (hard drive, USB flash drive, etc.).

5 plus years ago my wife had the only Apple ID and as a family we all used her Itunes account to buy and listen to music. A couple years later, I (husband) bought my first iPhone - the only iDevice in the household. When I set that iphone up, I used the wife's apple ID as I wanted access to all of the itunes music we had as a family. So now years later, all of my Apps etc have been purchased via the Wife's Apple ID. To make matters worse for my situation, my 10 yr old daughter got an iTouch for Christmas and i decided to use my actual (husband) Apple ID as daughter is a minor and I felt I could manage her iTouch Apps content that way. We have just recently bought our first iMac and I had yet to understand or get to work the iCloud or the Home Sharing of iTunes. To make matters worse, I have never synched my 3G iphone because of the whole Apple ID issue. I should also mention that the primary 'authorized' computer for my wife's itunes account is an old PC that we almost never use anymore as it runs soooo slow. So I am left to wonder how to go about making the transition to get the old PC 'deauthorized' after I somehow transfer all itunes files from the old PC to the new iMac. I now have the new iPhone5 and i REALLY want to get to the point where i have my iphone on my apple id and my wife has her apple id (no iphone for her yet - probably coming soon though). On the new iMac i have created a login for me and one for my wife. I was able to login to itunes on her imac login and i was able to set up iCloud. it works! - but now my calendar, contacts, photos, etc are on her profile login of the iMac! HELP me PLEASE!!
Your Apple ID should not be causing problems with your browser. If you describe the problems you are having we might be able to help with those.
