Do I have a bad memory slot and what to do about it.

About 3 weeks ago when I came down to my computer, intel imac purchased may 2006, in the morning the screen was black and power button was lit, keyboard did not work and the computer would not wake up from sleep. Rebooted and the power light would come one, no chime or screen power up, and the keyboard would not respond (ie caps lock key would light up). Tried multiple reboots and pulling everything connected out but nothing worked. Next on the torubleshooting list was to remove the ram. With both chips removed, 1gb and 512mb, I would get the flashing powerlight when starting up. I placed back in the 512 chip which is in the slot furthest from the front and the same symptons of just a solid power light with nothing else was exhibited. Removed the chip and placed the 1gb chip back into the slot closest to the front of the computer, everything worked fine. Startup was normal etc. Next, I removed the 1gb chip and put it into the slot towards the back and it would not work, next, moved the 512 chip to the front and all is well. Therefore, I think I have a bad memory slot given the torubleshooting procedures. Is this a correct assumption?
Here are my questions:
1. Are there any software solutions that will tell if the memory slot is indeed bad?
2. Does this sound like a hardware issue or is there an update to the core system that would fix this problem?
3. In order to get this repaired, would I take the imac to the apple store?
4. The computer was purchased in May 2006, if I purchased an applecare protection plan, would that cover the repairs or does it need to be purchased within 90 days of the computer?
Thanks in advance.

I think that sounds like a firmware update gone bad. Apple page I found says: "In the rare case that your computer displays a black screen after start up, you will need to restore your computers firmware back to factory condition before you can apply firmware update."
Dont know, but sounds like it.

The Question says it all really.
Is there any way i can log onto Game Center via just my Username as i have forgotten the other details (I made the account when i was 11 - I'm now 14 and have a bad memory)?
I remember my Username on Gamcenter but due to the recent update of iOS7, it is only letting me Sign in through my APPLE ID - which i have forgotten over time. I wish to recover my account recently because I remember purchasing Gems on the game 'Clash of Clans' and I wish I could restart playing the game.
Many thanks for taking your time to read and answer this question.

after upgrading to mountain lion, i find that my mail app does not have a "VIP" Tab. Was wondering if anyone else has this issue and what it is about?

First, select sender(s) as VIPs. Then the VIP category will appear.
To select a sender as a VIP, open an email from that sender, then hover over their name and a star icon will appear to the left. Click the star, and that sender will be set as a VIP (and the category will appear in the pane on the left).

If i make a query like( Select name, address from table) then it works fast then select(name, address)from view..Incorrectly interpreting the results.
A view is a SQL statement. Only difference is that the SQL statement is stored in the database's dictionary. Let's consider the following view:
create or replace view foo_view as select * from empWhen you use the view as follows:
select * from foo_viewOracle sees it as follows:
select * from (select * from emp)This is no slower, or no faster, than providing the following SQL to Oracle:
select * from empSo if you observe a difference in performance between using plain SQL versus using that same SQL via a view, there are other reasons for that difference in performance. The reason is NOT that views are slower.

    Hi there ..
i have an iPhone 4S, i bought from iraq ( Bagghdad ) and now i leave in france ( Poitiers ) i have with me the box and what's in the box . i bought before 10 months so i didn't complete my first year of garanty, can i change my phone without any paper of garanty ? because i read in thier website
    " Warranty
Every iPhone includes 90 days of free telephone technical support and a one-year limited warranty. "
so can i change it while am in france ?

The iPhone is not sold officially by Apple in Irag so no telling which country this iPhone was intended for by Apple when new.
The iPhone's warranty is not a worldwide warranty, and if this iPhone was sold as carrier locked when new and was hacked/jailbroken to be unlocked, the warranty is void if this is discovered/determined by Apple.
You can make an appointment at an Apple Store in France to determine which country this iPhone was intended for by Apple when new.

  • International Roaming and Whats it all about.

Roaming and what’s it about?Roaming is when you are no longer able to Pick Up your home Network (O2-UK). This is normally when you are in another country. However it is possible to pick up French Network when in UK and the Irish Networks when you’re still in Northern Ireland.  But if you phone is displaying anything else beside O2-UK or BT Cellnet (On Some Older Phones), then you are Roaming on a Foreign Network and Roaming Charges will apply if Services are used. Is O2-IE the same as O2-UK?Answer is no. O2-IE is a completely independent business to O2-UK and therefore Roaming Charges would apply.O2-IE (O2 Ireland) and O2-UK (O2 United Kingdom) are both Part of the Telefonica Group, but this is all and is 2 Separate businesses  Do I need to Activate Roaming? If you are an O2 PAYG Customer then Roaming is activated automatically as you can only spend what you have in Credit.O2 Contract customers may need to call 202 to confirm they have Roaming Activated on their account if they have never used the service before or had issues in the past.  How does Roaming Work? When you travel outside your Home Network, your Mobile Phone Sim will ask the Roaming (Foreign) network first if it can use the services on their Network. (You IMEI number of your phone is also sent to verify it’s not the Stolen / Missing Database as well) The Foreign Network will take details from your Sim card and go back to the International Centre and check if O2 has an agreement first to use the Network and then if the Sim card is activated to use the Roaming. (This is why there is a delay sometimes in first switching on your mobile to you getting a signal and a Network Name) If all comes back ok, then the Sim will receive instruction and you notice the Roaming Network Name shown on your phone. What you may not know is that when the phone is authorised to use the Roaming Network, It is given a temporary allocated foreign number of the country you are visiting. So you may have someone calling you and they may notice that the Ring tone suddenly sounds different in their Earpiece and not like the UK Ring. This is because of the Foreign Number allocated and that you are roaming on their Countries Network. One this you will never know though is the Temporary Roaming Number as this is only a Forward number and changes.  So what charges do you pay for when roaming?Making Calls?                     Yes you pay for all of the Call.Receiving Calls?                                Yes you pay for the Roaming country Inbound Part of the Call.Sending a SMS?                                Yes you pay to send a SMS.Receiving a SMS?             No it’s free to receive a SMS.Sending a MMS?              Yes you pay to send a MMS.Receiving a MMS?           You may be charged for Data Usage to receive the MMS ( I never have on O2, But I know other UK networks charge)Data Usage                         Is all chargeable  The Person who is Calling or Texting you from the UK. This is where a lot of confusion becomes and people become worried regarding charges.                        Simple Fact to Remember:Even though the person you are contacting is abroad. You are still only calling their UK Mobile Number. So treat it as they are still in the UK. So for example: If you have free UK Text allowance, it will still be Free (Your Texting a UK mobile Number)If you have Free UK Minutes, then again you are calling a UK Mobile Number, so it will use your UK Minutes Allowance. If you don’t have Free Allowances, then you will be charged at your normal standard Rate of ringing a UK or Texting a UK Mobile number  Couple of Questions and Answers that may come in useful: Q)   I’m abroad and my friend is abroad, will I be charged to contact my friend as I’m only calling a UK Mobile numberA)   Yes, even though you are calling a UK Mobile Number. You are not in the UK and the person you are calling isn’t, so you will pay the Roaming Charges to make the call and the person who is receiving the call will pay the inbound part of the charge Q)   Why am I charged twice for Voice Mail Messages?A)   When someone tries to contact you and you don’t answer, the call is then passed back to the O2-UK voice mail as a return call, So you pay for the Return part of the call even though you didn’t answer your Mobile. Then when you want to listen to your voice mail, you pay to make the call and listen to it. So this is where Double Charges apply Q)   Why are inbound SMS free when I’m abroad?A)   This was set by the EU Telecoms Parliament, that any EU Mobile Company must allow their users to allow incoming SMS for Free anywhere in the world. Q)   What is the Difference between Roaming and Home Networks?A)   Your home network is in your network where you purchased the Sim from. So if you purchased your Sim card in the UK and from O2, your home network would be O2-UK and you would be allocated a UK Mobile number.Roaming is when you are no longer on your home network. So for example you go to Spain and you pick up Telefonica ES. This mean you are Roaming on a Spanish Network. If you have any other questions please ask and I will gladly try to answer them and will keep editing the 1st thread to make it easier for everyone to read.

Since upgrading to OS X 10.8.2 a few days ago, Safari will suddenly zoom in on web pages (happens on multiple sites) when I scroll or move the mouse -- any one know why and what to do about it? Thanks!

It really isn't a well thought out 'gesture' when a normal scroll action can result in an unwanted zoom but disabling SmartZoom wasn't an option for me—one of those with eyes that tire easily when reading very small text on a 27" display.
For a while I used command-+ and command-'-' to read small text but that isn't supported in some apps and for Safari it often leaves the browser in an less than perfect state when moving to the next page.  I also tried option scroll to zoom the whole display but that was not desirable, either.
I finally settled on leaving SmartZoom enabled and remembering to double tap with one finger whenever the undesired zoom happens. It happens so often that the double tap is almost a reflex action for me.

  • Why do online videos start and stop and what to do about it

why do online videos start and stop and what to do about it

It usually means a slow internet connection, or inadequate hardware or both.
It is not a 10.6 problem as such as 10.6 handles video streaming quite well.
In your post this tag seems incongruous in this 10.6 category.

  • Powerbook Lower Memory Slot Issue, what are my options?

    Hi there,
I have a Powerbook G4 1.5ghz that I purchased in October of 2004. I had no problems with it until after upgrading the RAM to 2 x 512mb chips and then installing Tiger which resulted in me later notcing the missing RAM and learning about the lower memory slot failure issue.
I find that sometimes if I remove the RAM and try and power it up and then replace the RAM again that the lower slot ocassionaly does come back. Trouble is though that the machine will either crash or I loose the other RAM slot when I have to shut it down. It seems to be so intermittent this way and I'm tired of constantly removing the RAM to fiddle about with it.
My serial number begins W8441, so it isn't covered by the returns programe. I would call Apple Support, but I am put off by a £35 charge just to have them discuss and diagnose the problem.
I'm in the UK and as I don't have Applecare and I'm not elgiable for the returns programe can anyone tell me what they charge for a logic board replacment? Looking at what they charge in the US, it's not cheap.
I use my Powebook for Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, After Effects mainly and I had been alright with 1gig when it was working.
I'm really trying to decide what the best thing to do is....
    - Do I pay for the logic board replacement, which I'm not really sure I can afford right now, or to be without my machine... especially as I have read that it can just fail again.
    - Should I just buy a 1gig stick for the upper slot and try and sell my old RAM, as that would be cheaper than getting the logic board replaced?
It's a real shame that Apple doesn't seem to want to ackowledge that this effects other users as I'd been so impressed with everything about Apple up until now.
    Thanks for any advice.

(Browse down for findings and questions).
The notorious lower-memory-slot-bug has hit my finally too... I never believed it until now (and I've immediately signed the petition).
I am outside warranty and I never bought Applecare either.
Also my powerbook, a very dear machine to me, is a less common type to have this problem: a 1 GHz G4 15" FireWire 800 OS 10.3.9 type. Funny enough my older powerbook ( a G3 Bronze) is still running strong with no problems whatsoever.
My G4 15" also has the "white spots" problem and a dead superdrive... I cannot believe how many hardware problems I'm having with this machine in comparison to all my older macs - even my sluggish powerMac 7200/90 never gave me this many headaches...
Alright, I'll stop complaining for now.
I've been able to browse the internet on this and found the following statements:
The lower memory slot gets "fried" because of a OS 10.3.9 upgrade,
or possibly due to overheating when the powerbook is put on the users' lap,
or possibly due to picking the powerbook up by the corners so the metal gets bent.
+ I have only seen one case where someone's UPPER memory slot was defective.
The solution to this problem (replacing the logic board) didn't seem to be definate in many cases so I'm reluctant to try this myself (and I have very little money). The alternative (replacing the upper slot memory with a bigger type of RAM) seems a bit scary to me,
    because I wonder:
-will the upper memory slot RAM get "fried" eventually as well after a while?
-do you need to have something installed in the lower slot or is it possible to just install one RAM card only?
-are there more people with a 1 GHz PB that have this problem? It seems it's mostly people with a 1,67 GHz that have been bitten by this bug and maybe that's why Apple decided to give the majority a free repair. I am not sure whether that is a common policy, I am part of the minority it seems.
As a solutions someone posted on a board that we should all buy KTA-PBG4333/1G RAM, but here in Dutch stores it is said this memory is only compatible with 17" powerbooks....
Does anyone know if it is suitable for 15" as well??

  • Why have I been charged twice and what for?

I have been charged two amounts, I presume for my landline to skype service. I would like to know why, and what this payment has been taken for? I Have been using this service since 2011 and cannot remember this happening before.
PayPal states that [email protected] is to be used as the customer service email, which has an auto responder stating that the email address is no longer in use. The message directs me to manually find and use a contact form which I could not find.
This has left me incredibly frustrated, to the point that I would like to cancel this subscription immediately.
Please contact me as soon as possible.

Those are just the system checking that there is a valid account in the bank and that there are funds available. Those are only pending charges, they will not be completed and no funds will actually be removed from your account.

  • Bad memory slot

After lots of tests using mac hardware test, and switching various memory pairs into different slots, I conclude that one of the slots is bad. It is slot J44 on my 1.8 dual G5.
Before I take the G5 into a shop to get a new slot installed, I thought I'd ask here first, just in case there's a less drastic maintenance I might be able to try on my own. For instance, is there any chance i might solve the problem by cleaning the slot with a toothbrush dipped in some solvent? If so what solvent do I use? Anything else i might try?
Is swapping a single slot something i might try on my own? Or do I have to swap an entire bank of 4 slots? I can use a screw driver OK. I'm no pro with solder.
    any advice is much appreciated.

    Hi Jim,
Before I take the G5 into a shop to get a new slot installed...
I doubt any shop can do that, I believe it's a 5 layer Logic board & there's only one place in Germany that has had success & will accept the job of reflowing the Logic board.
For instance, is there any chance i might solve the problem by cleaning the slot with a toothbrush dipped in some solvent?
Highly unlikely, it's almost always due to the Lead Free Solder they started using on the G5s, it tends to lose contact due to expansion from heat & contraction from cooling.
I have heard of a couple of success stories using a Hair Dryer or Heat Gun around the slots, I think one person also baked one at 350°F for a half hour.

  • Help understanding what I have in my New GT70 and what can I do with it.

In the last few days I received my new gt70 from amazon. I must say I love it. Absolutely. I plan on building a supercomputer one day, but this laptop more than sufficed my immediate needs and I can save some money for a year or so. Anyways, I bought the second most expensive one right under the dragon edition bc quite frankly im not a huge lover of the color red or dragons.. (I did when I was much younger) However i went with the second most expensive bc its all black and seems to have enough on it to keep me happy.
Problem is that I really like the SSD's mine came with the 2 in raid 0 for a total of 256gb. Then I have this 1tb HDD. Now for the related questions. Can I replace the HDD with a huge SSD? That would kick ass. Also, could I or is there another slot for a 3rd SSD? What do the 2 128's look like? I want to do this without needing to remove the existing SSD's bc Im not that savvy on how to do it all. Maybe I can bring it somewhere. Im in the New Orleans area. As a side note/question. Of my 256gb a ton of space was used when I got the thing, (before adding anything) I understand startup programs and all.. and the SSD's are C: drive.. the 1TB D; HDD is missing 100gb and when u open the drive there are absolutely ZERO file folders in there.. Is everything really on my SSD's ? Whats preloaded on my HDD to take away 100gb and wheres the files?
Bottom Line I want more SSD. Money isnt a big deal.
Second set of questions. Ram. I have 24gb (sure more than enough) but if I wanted to, how would I get mine up to 32gb.. Replace everything or add to some existing empty slots?
Im pretty much cool with everything else. I have the 780m (i think is the best available at the moment) and the best cpu from MSI.. So yea, PLEASE HELP!!!

Ok I looked on the box and it does say GT70 20E.. so im good on that. And the sticker does say ram  (8gbX3) so adding another stick will be childs play. (even for someone like me).. Ill just replace the HDD with the SSD asap and I guess I shouldn't worry about messing up or missing files bc you said missing 100gb with no files in there is normal.. So I just pop the old one out and put the new one in. Should be that easy. (maybe install some drivers) Ill do more research so I dont mess things up. Or get one of my super tech friends to come assist/teach me.
I also want to change out the thermal paste.
MAJOR QUESTION!!!>.... I cannot understand why this is happening to me, but I play games on steam. I tried downloading a game overnight last night and when I came down my computer was off. I rebooted it up and took a shower came back down and it was off again.. All the settings in the power management are set to NEVER shutdown or sleep. Im not running hot, as I had my fan on, AC on 60, Fan in the room on, and a fan pad thing under it on. I didnt downgrade to windows 7 yet, and my not, and this is a legal copy of course.. Unless im running a benchmark or playing a serious game i idle, surf the web, and download, around 30-40 Degrees Celsius. It still shuts down though. Ill let it run again and see it the problem persists and let you know.

"Are you sure you want to switch wireless networks? Setting up this base station requires switching wireless networks. Switching wireless networks may interrupt your connection to the Internet."
