Do I have a bad router?

I just bought a used D-Link DI-624 router on ebay and couldn't be more displeased. I wanted to know if possibly my problem has anything to do with my set-up, or if I should have good cause to tell the seller how upset I am with this thing.
Are there any current known problems with the Apple Airport card? I know there was some recent buzz about some issues that resulted in a patch being offered via Apple software update. I did download and install this patch.
Here's what's happening (My iMac is wirelessly connected to the router - there are no other computers on the network other than the Windows host computer - I have Road Runner cable broadband): Connecting to the network via airport takes up to 5 trys. When connected, all is good most of the time yet throughout the day it's as if the D-Link stops routing. The airport signal icon shows strong and connected yet I cannot get on the net. After a few minutes everything goes back to working properly. Seldomly the airport signal icon will drop down to only one bar, even though the router or my computer has not been moved. The latter is not so much a problem, rather a curiosity. But the other problem is really a hassle.
Please advise.
Thanks.

That's the correct place to look, and it looks like its getting an IP address properly assigned to it.
You could try setting the router to broadcast on a different channel, and check the area for possible RF-emitting devices that could interfere with the signal.
If the router has ethernet ports I'd recommend trying an ethernet cable to troubleshoot the airport connection. If the ethernet works fine then the router's routing capabilities should be fine, and it could be either a hardware problem (loose antenna, for example) or some funky setting like the wrong channel being set or an incompatibility if the router has a different or multiple protocols enabled (b, g, n, and the like...).

  • Have to reboot router at least once a day otherwise it slows down

Over the last few days my internet speeds drop to a crawl at least once a day until I reboot the router. It slows down to 100kb or so. One I reboot the router it hits back to 50mb.
Is there setting in the router to fix this or do I just have a bad router?

Hard to say with certainty but if it resolves itself for the time being after every time you reset it then yeah, you should contact support and ask that they send you a replacement router.
Do be prepared to do some basic troubleshooting with them over the phone though.

It's good to read Antoniad's post.  It reassures me that I can use my new iPad as an international communication device which is the reason I purchased the thing.  However, I called Verizon today (my provider of cellular data) who told me that I can't just pop in a SIM card as you suggested.  He also said that he was from the "Pre-Pay" division of Verizon and he was certain that I couldn't do what I planned to do.  I was extremely disappointed as I had called Apple prior to buying the iPad and I read the algorhythm on the website for choosing an iPad before purchasing.  Those sources were quite specific and the information seemed clear.  I would be able to use my iPad to communicate through cellular connections while traveling on the road, literally, abroad.  I was told that I could pop in a data card wherever I was, just as you indicated in your message above, and voila I was good to go.  The Verizon rep definitively rained on that parade, but said that I might be able to do this if I have a "Post-Pay" account, a different area of Verizon.  I haven't had the chance to talk to this division yet, so I looked to Apple's Support for answers.  Maybe I will find out that I can use my iPad as an international communication device while traveling on the road afterall, however, it appears I may need a different type of account (Post-Pay), something I was never warned about. Can I switch to this kind of account?  I don't know.  I have to find out.  If you have any information about this issue, it would be good to share since I strongly suspect there are others who bought the iPad for the same purpose that I have.

  • Bad routing from Dallas to Denver, please help!

First of all, I am a gamer, so this is all coming from a gamer's point of view. I have a server that I host for my community in Denver, because everyone usually has a fair and even latency when hosted there. But recently, my hops from Dallas to Denver have been drastically different and it affects the way I play the game. I am wondering what is causing my latency to jump up 30ms, nearly double, at random times. It fluctuates back and forth all day between about 45ms (which is what it should be) to 75ms. I don't know whether it is just traffic or a bad router somewhere, but it is getting annoying. Was wondering if anyone could help me out here or help me figure out what the problem could be. I have already contacted the server company, and they found nothing wrong on their end, so I am assuming that it is the ISP that is causing this.

    Game is Counter-Strike: Source
You could see why an extra 30 ping might mess you up with the added delay
I took this tracert last night, probably around 11p.m. CST.

As far as I can tell, the problem lies soley with Denver. It's not just this one server, but any Denver server I test. My latency is fine to all other locations, like Chicago, Seatlle, Dallas, and so on, but for some reason, something goes wrong with there. My connection itself does not suffer any delay or limited bandwidth. It can sometimes even go as low as 35ms, and goes as high as 75ms.
The server company that is hosting is NuclearFallout (and if you know much about server hosting companies, they are pretty much the cream of the crop).

    I
got your message about making sure to use the machine specific disk that came with my machine. Unfortunately, Apple no longer sells Tiger replacement disks. I've got a couple of bids out on ebay, and will update when I have news to add to this post.
Thank you for your help, Frank!
To be clear you called the 800 number and explained what the situation was, old machine and lost the original DVD's?
Just checking because if you just called and tried to buy the DVD's they might tell you they no longer sell them but you aren't really trying to buy them your trying to replace the ones that are missing.
Ebay may work but there is a certain specificity to the DVD's required which, even if they seem right, might not work.
Good luck either way. If you get a chance when you get the DVD's I'd be interested in hearing how it all works out.

  • How Can I Tell if I Have a Bad RAM Terminal?

A few weeks ago, my MacBook Pro started freezing several times a day, and it was to the point where I couldn't use it for even 10 minutes. It would also beep three times most of the time that it froze. So I turned it off for like 3 weeks and then took it in to the Genius Bar.
He ran some tests and said it was a RAM issue and I could buy new RAM chips (or whatever) and so I did, and when I installed two of them, my computer wouldn't start. I thought maybe the MHz was too big. I took one out, and the computer worked fine. For thirty minutes. Then BEEEEP beeeeeep BEEEEEP
I removed the one RAM and reseated it in the other terminal, and my computer has been working fine for most of the morning. I am running Chrome and playing youtube, Facebook, uploading pictures, and using iPhoto.
My MacBookPro came with 2 2GB RAMs (1333 MHz). The new RAMs are 2 4GB DDR3 OC3-10666 and compatible with 1333MHz and 1066MHz, according to the package.
The closest Apple store to me is more than an hour drive, and I'm wondering if there are any tests I can do at home. To me, an inexperienced computer repairwoman, it looks like I have a bad RAM terminal. Tonight I will reseat the RAM in the first terminal I tried, and see if it freezes and beeps again. It's possible that it was just seated incorrectly, perhaps?
Please send any and all advice, thoughts, questions, etc. Thank you!

As John Galt says, not all RAM is created equal.  Crucial.com or MacSales.com (OWC) are well respected Mac RAM vendors.
    Rember
    <https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15837/rember/>
    is a wrapper around memtest.
Note:  If you Mac refuses to run the app, you can force it by doing Control-Click -> Open, and then agreeing to the dialog box.  Rember is an unsigned app, which is why the Mac may complain.  The Control-Click -> Open trick is a way to force the Mac to run the unsigned app.
If you are having problems betting into a full Mac OS X GUI, then you might want to get memtest which can be run from the command line in Single-User mode (boot holding Command-S).  If you have installed 'Rember' you can find a copy of 'memtest' buried inside
    ./Rember.app/Contents/Resources/memtest all
the ./ means you have to figure out the front part of the directory path to Rember.app where ever you stored it.
Here are some additional web sites, but keep in mind that 'Rember' is a wrapper for 'memtest' so when those sites discuss 'memtest', 'Rember' is essentially the same thing.

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

MB-Air uses maverick downloaded yesterday - upgrade from mountain lion. MB uses snow leopard still, as i am quite used to it and am thinking of upgrade if mavericks work fine on air. Also have parallel on snow leopard but it is no longer supported according to mac website - if i upgrade am i going to lose my parallel and will have to buy a new one!!!

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Hello there, is there any way i can log onto Game Center via just my Username as i have forgotten the other details (I made the account when i was 11 - I'm now 14 and have a bad memory)

The Question says it all really.
Is there any way i can log onto Game Center via just my Username as i have forgotten the other details (I made the account when i was 11 - I'm now 14 and have a bad memory)?
I remember my Username on Gamcenter but due to the recent update of iOS7, it is only letting me Sign in through my APPLE ID - which i have forgotten over time. I wish to recover my account recently because I remember purchasing Gems on the game 'Clash of Clans' and I wish I could restart playing the game.
Many thanks for taking your time to read and answer this question.

  • Do I have a bad memory slot and what to do about it.

About 3 weeks ago when I came down to my computer, intel imac purchased may 2006, in the morning the screen was black and power button was lit, keyboard did not work and the computer would not wake up from sleep. Rebooted and the power light would come one, no chime or screen power up, and the keyboard would not respond (ie caps lock key would light up). Tried multiple reboots and pulling everything connected out but nothing worked. Next on the torubleshooting list was to remove the ram. With both chips removed, 1gb and 512mb, I would get the flashing powerlight when starting up. I placed back in the 512 chip which is in the slot furthest from the front and the same symptons of just a solid power light with nothing else was exhibited. Removed the chip and placed the 1gb chip back into the slot closest to the front of the computer, everything worked fine. Startup was normal etc. Next, I removed the 1gb chip and put it into the slot towards the back and it would not work, next, moved the 512 chip to the front and all is well. Therefore, I think I have a bad memory slot given the torubleshooting procedures. Is this a correct assumption?
    Here are my questions:
    1. Are there any software solutions that will tell if the memory slot is indeed bad?
    2. Does this sound like a hardware issue or is there an update to the core system that would fix this problem?
    3. In order to get this repaired, would I take the imac to the apple store?
    4. The computer was purchased in May 2006, if I purchased an applecare protection plan, would that cover the repairs or does it need to be purchased within 90 days of the computer?
    Thanks in advance.

I think that sounds like a firmware update gone bad. Apple page I found says: "In the rare case that your computer displays a black screen after start up, you will need to restore your computers firmware back to factory condition before you can apply firmware update."
Dont know, but sounds like it.

    may be worth a try.

    Ray

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

  • I have a wifi router already. Can I connect a time capsule to that wirelessly?, I have a wifi router already. Can I connect my time capsule to that wirelessly?

I Have a wifi router which is located in my brothers bedroom. Now I am buying a iMac. Along with it I want to buy a time capsule which I want in my bed room. Is it possible to connect the two wifi routers wirelessly?

The Time Capsule can be configured to "join a wireless network" so backups will occur over the wireless network that is being provided by the wireless router in the other bedroom.
Things will be fine as long as there is a strong wireless signal where the Time Capsule will be located.
But...the Time Capsule cannot "extend" the wireless network or provide more wireless coverage...unless...the other router is also an Apple product.
