Do I have a dead optical "superdrive"?

Optical drive in an Intel iMac. Suddenly stuff disappeared, i.e., the ability to change screen wallpaper. The facility is totally gone. Since I'm home today, I figured I would reload the OS: Tiger up to 10.4.11. The disk kicked right out of the drive. I tried it pressing various keys. Same result. I called Tekserve and they suggested a dead optical drive. So did the Apple tech guy. But this machine is exactly two years old, this is NOT supposed to happen. I was hoping it was the OS. After all I put Aperture into the machine and it read the DVD. I put iWork into the machine and it read the DVD. I put the operating system into the machine and it coughed it right back. One of the people I talked to suggested it could be that the drive rejects certain software, even if you make sure the disk is clean and well-maintained.
I don't know whether to get an optical disk cleaner, schlepp the whole machine to an Apple store (40 miles away), or just give up. I loved this machine but if it's this finicky I don't want to be stuck with it.
Has anyone had this precise thing happen, and if so, how did you solve it?

  • Mid-2010 Mac Mini, dead optical drive: Are any slim Firewire DVD burners compatible?

The optical drive on my Mac Mini seems to have died prematurely, as the OEM drives are known to do. Estimated cost of replacing the internal component: $170. And it would be the exact same model Apple optical drive, not a more robust one.
Now very reluctantly thinking of adding yet another peripheral. USB ports are pretty well filled but I don't use the Firewire port for anything.
Trouble is, since Apple discontinued Firewire, the manufacturers of Mac-compatible optical drives aren't making Firewire models any more.
There are a few recent Firewire DVD burners from PC peripheral manufacturers, such as Acer, Aopen, Dell, Pioneer, Sony (Amazon reviews say it's restricted to burning Sony media) in a small "slim" form factor.
Anyone have information about their compatibility with Firewire 800 on mid-2010 Mac mini, Mac OS 10.10.1 Yosemite?

There are some steps involved which may translate to tedium,
as noted in the repair guide for the Mid 2010 Mini from iFixit.

At about Step 25, of an overall rated Difficult process, you can
see the Optical Drive, and likely be at a point to install replace-
ment, then reverse the process; paying heed to advice given.

At least you can get into this computer. Be sure to have a spare
optical drive cable and other possible items that may get broken
in the process. Oh there also is a PRAM battery in this computer
that may or may not need replacement while it is open...
If at one point, if several parts were to be replaced at one time, a
visit to a service technician becomes very cost effective. Find one
that will install the parts you may get from third-party sources. If
you know someone at a college computer lab, they may be able
to perform the swap, test their work, and be done, in short order.
Or, chose to use an external inexpensive 'superdrive' equivalent.
I'd heard the LG brand was among some that work, and can also
be used to boot the computer from System DVD or utility discs...
It is a USB drive, can burn DVD/CD media, and is not costly.
The ability to swap out the defective optical drive, and replace it
with an SSD or second storage drive, may be a way to go; but
it also would be at least as tedious as optical drive replacement.
This may add value to the device, in a resale situation later.
That would use the 'drive doubler' idea referred to at macsales.
In the above main guide, is a primer on how to swap out the optical
drive and replace it with a second hard disk drive or solid state drive.
Similar to what the OWC site says, but they have a good kit, too.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I have a Dead Spot in the Tone Curve

I have noticed when using a tablet while working in LR5 I have a dead spot in the upper part of the curve near the highlights portion. I thought it was just a result of my tablet being old and a cheaper model. I tested it with a new Intuos 5 Touch and had the same problem. I go to drag down or up on the upper part of the curve and it doesn't move or hangs up. It happens in all RGB channels also. Has anyone else had this problem or know why this happens? Thanks!

I have a dead thunder bug, right in the middle of my screen and it's dead!! It's so annoying - what can I do? How the **** did it get in there.

Uhm. It crawled in there? Strange.
If your laptop is still under warranty then bring it to an apple store. This way they will take it apart for you and you wont be voiding your warranty.
If it's not under warranty, you could bring/call a apple store and see if they will do it for free.

  • Replacing an Optical Superdrive

I bought an optical Superdrive from OWC but the drive doesn't match the one in the iMac I own.(iMac G5 17in) There is a bracket that has the three screws that hold it to the inside of the mac and an interface on one side that connects it to the Mac electronically. none of that is on the drive I bought. Can I just detatch them from the old drive and attach them to the new drive?

I did remove them from the old drive and got them on the new. It works.

  • Speakers dead since SuperDrive update?

Since installing the "SuperDrive Update" yesterday (original MBP 15" 2.0 GHz CoreDuo 10.4.10) the speakers are dead. In System Preferences "Digital Out" is the only remaining option and when playing any audio a red light is emitted from the headphone terminal. When plugging in a headphone it does work, just there is no way to make the speakers work (they are not inoperative - the start-up sound plays back OK). There is no way to change this in either System Preferences or Audio/Midi Set-up. I have tried all the permissions, combo update, PRAM and SMC reset stuff already - no need to suggest that.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Uwe

  • I have one dead pixel in the middle of the screen.

I have 3 issues with my iPad2 at the moment
    1. Bad back-light bleeding around edges. It is kind of big bleed on the right edge and small ones on the left.
    2. One dead pixel in the middle of the screen.
    3. Lots Horizontal lines occured everytime when press sleep button on and off quickly.
What can I do, this is the replaced one that comes in brown box. On of the genius guy say that horizonta lines is normal when LCD screen boots up and as long as it does not effect while you are playing then it should be fine. But my friend dont have this issue so i think it is kind of faulty of the device.
Can I go to genius bar and ask for another replacement?

I went to apple store today and this time one of the staff said they will not replace for dead pixels or screen bleeding. And for the horizontal line issue.. The guy at genius bar said it's normal when LCD screen wakes up from sleep or when it boots up. It's kinda weird I think.

  • Gray Screen w/o Pinwheel and a dead optical drive-what to do?

This is a G4 iMac 700Mhz Flat-panel Running OS 10.4.9. The internal optical drive long ago gave up the ghost. I have been using an external LaCie optical drive which is firewire. The gray screen of death arrived this AM after software update the previous evening with Apple logo, but no pinwheel. Tried Reset PRAM (-); tried single user mode (-); tried booting from the firewire drive . Any suggestions? Hardware? Software? Time for a new machine?

Hurray!! Dodged another bullet. Hooked into the desktop HD using Firewire Target disk mode and was able to wash it with DIsk Warrior 3.03. Then I ran Disk Utility to repair any permissions and it booted right up. Thanks for the Help!!

Please help me I bought the iPad 2, 5 days ago and when it has a dead pixel and it is more intense when it warms up a bit what should I do?????

You can always ask for a replacement, but this does not mean that you'll actually get one.
Also, there is no guarantee that your new iPad will be free of faulty pixels.
Any display, no matter from which manufacturer, can have or develop faulty pixels.

  • I have one dead pixel on my iPad Mini, besides sending it back is there anything I could do?

On my iPad Mini screen, since I have bought it, there has been one small black dot in the middle of the screen (I'm presuming a dead pixel because its absolutely always there). And I'm not too bothered about it but if there was something I could do without having to send it back that would be great!
    Thanks
    Ryan

My iPad Mini arrived this morning with a dead pixel. I am going through the exchange process now. Hopefully the next one I recieve will not have this problem. Is this a popular issue?
