Do I have a MBP lemon?
I bought a brand new 17" MBP at the end on January 2011. (Mac user for 20 years) I've never experienced the amount of crashing that I've had on this particular Mac. I know some of this is a result of the ongoing Flash war. Many crashes do seem to involve Flash. But other issues are not only Safari related. I started keeping records of the error messages and crash reports that are sent to Apple. My document has grown to over 70 pages! And the craziest part of all of this is -- I cannot seem to replicate any crash scenario. Is there any way for the genius bar or for Apple to look at all of this information and tell me if I have a computer problem. I am the biggest Apple fan around -- but I also realize -- sometimes there might be a bad component in the machine (even an Apple.) The last crash happened about 35 minutes ago. I am fairly knowledgeable about Macs but certainly not a programer or an expert. I had my Mac mail open and my Safari browser open (2-3 browser windows.) And the error report is very strange (to me, again, no expert.) So in this report, this is what I find concerning:
• Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
• Application SpecificInformation: objc_msgSend() selectorname: _invalidateGStatesForTree
• Java information: Exception type: Bus Error (0xa) atpc=7fff82bbd11c
• Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM(19.1-b02-334 mixed mode macosx-amd64)
• VM state:not at safepoint(normal execution)
• VM Mutex/Monitor currentlyowned by a thread: None
I realize I am picking out certain items -- and possibly I'll need to post the entire report. It's just so long! This virtual memory issue seems to be a new one. The machine has 8 GBs of memory and the HD has 400 GB of free space. And it is an Intel Core i7, speed is 2.8 GHz. Why would it be 'tapped out' of memory? Does something seem to be wrong -- yes, I know -- probably too little information to make guesses.
Ideas, thoughts, suggestions? I'd be happy to post additional information if that would be helpful. I am utterly perplexed. And I'm starting to worry that something isn't right. I've never had a Mac cause this many problems for me. And I have a 3-year Apple Care warranty but I'm loathe to take it in when I can't replicate the errors.
Thanks, in advance.
Keep all your case numbers and keep after Apple to fix it. Usually after 3 repair attempts, they will will replace the product. You need to talk to Apple Customer Relations if you are unhappy and feel you should get a replacement. There were some issues concerning thermal paste with early models. You may have one of those.

Difficulty using a projector. I have a MBP 17" and am running 10.6.8. Often I need to make a Powerpoint or other presentation at a client and I want to connect my computer to their projector. Either it won't display on the projector at all. Once it displayed but the presentation mode was on the big screen and the presentation I wanted to show was on my MBP screen. I have the adapter( white ones) to attached to the projector cables. I am so frsutrated...it looks so silly not to have a computer work during a presentation..
Another problem one the rare occasion that it shows on the screen is that the presentation does show just my desk top. Any ideas?
Thanks !You often have to turn off Mirroring to be able to set the second "screen"s resolution to something reasonable. When you do, the two screens become an "Exceeded Desktop" joined along one edge, and the Arrange pane in displays prefs can allow you to specify what edge. Initially, it will show a vacant extension of the built-in screen's desktop.
The mouse moves freely across that shared edge, and can allow you to drag the presentation window across to the the projector screen and re-size it to fit. -
I currently have a mbp 2.3 gighuz intel core 7 16 gig of ram with two internal hard drives ( took super drive out) which for a video editor like myself is a dream I can edit video anywhere, my question can I order a new mbp with 2 internal flash drives?
I wouldn't think so because the newer ones with Retina displays don't have an internal SuperDrive that can be replaced. Therefore the newer logic boards wouldn't have the two SATA/SATA Express connections on the logic board.
At least that was the case as of 2012. I've seen newer ones and they also don't have a SuperDrive. -
I have a MBP 13-inch, Mid 2010 and have just upgraded to mountain lion and am trying to connect it to my apple tv however i dont get the air play icon on my mac i have followed all the advise on support anyone able to help??

I have a MBP 15" with Iphoto 9. When I right click on icon in dock 3 iPhoto libraries come up; one empty, one with 35,000 photos and one with 30,000 photos. How can I delete the empty library and merge the other two without getting duplicates?
You can delete the empty one by dragging it to the trash ( test everything before emptying the trash)
Merging libraries requires iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - it is the only current solution to merging libraries

I have a MBP with Lion as well as Parallels and Windows 7. In Lion, I completely uninstalled Firefox using "Clean My Mac." Don't ask me why:( Understandably, my bookmarks are gone.
Are they hidden anywhere they can be retrieved? I have been trying to fix this for three days using all your suggestions but just do not have the savvy to do it alone.
Help!!
Dave CainThanks Edmeister. I was able to reach from OSX to Windows 7 to locate and 'Restore' to a bookmark backup file from the Firefox resident to Windows. In fact, I see a list of old dates that are prior to my deleting Firefox from OSX. But none of them changed any of the current bookmarks in OSX Firefox. I then Restored Firefox on the Windows side but it didn't give me any new bookmarks. I was under the impression (incorrectly) that both sides might have the same bookmarks. Wrong answer.
When going into Time Machine, there is also no luck because the Firefox file does not exist in Application Support, so there is nothing to pull from there.
Sounds like it's game over. -
When in transport, which is better have the MBP shut down or sleep mode?
when in transport, which is better have the MBP shut down or in sleep mode?
Read the user manual that came w/your computer. Personally, I shut down when transporting.
It all comes down to personal preference. "Different Strokes For Different Folks" -

I have a MBP Retina LCD (resolution 2880x1800) and in the office I use it with a Monitor Sony LMD-2450W connected by VGA. After installing 10.9.2 the resolution in the monitor has been downsized to 4:3 (and 1280x960) instead of its 16:9 display. Anyone know how can I change the resolution manually?
Display shows only 3 different resolution if I choose "scaled" but none use the full area of the monitor.
Thank you
MarcoThis has been an ongoing problem with external monitors that predates 10.9.2. I wrote various tips on different methods here, though the best is probably the hot corner one:

I have a MBP retina and I am having problem when my bluetooth and wifi are both active. My wifi is totally unusable when I am connected to via bluetooth speaker.
Chances are you mis-typed a character in the Wifi password and the devices saved that information. Now whenever you try to connect the device refers to the wrong password and the Jetpack does not accept your connection. Tell your devices to forget the wireless connection and start over.
Once you enter the proper WiFi credentials the Jetpack will allow you to connect. -
Cheers everybody, new here...
I know, despite the specs published 8Gmax and 1333mhz, for the macbook pro late 2011 2.2G i7 processor
We can read here that its possible to go 16G ram, and also to 1600mhz.
1-have a mbp late 2011 2.2Ghz i7 (original config with 4G of ram 1333mhz)
2-last w/e have upgraded ram to 8G of 1600mhz found it seemed to work fine and it was fast
3-than upgraded with 16G of 1333mhz and find it much slower
Not sure of what to do from now :
wondering if it could be that 8G 1600mhz is optimal ?
I havent tried 16G of 1600mhz yet...Hi there !
Update:
Here are the last changes, as of this morning, of the configuration on my macbook pro late 2011 (2.2Ghz processor 15.4 screen).
Now have 16 G (2x8) of Kingston RAM 1600mhz (12800 1.35V) that and a brand new 256G samsung 850 pro SSD.
I KNOW...NOT QUITE THE SPECS SUPPLIED FROM APPLE/INTEL ... :/
I was able to trade the 16G 1333mhz purchased RAM for 16G of 1600mhz , so i gave a shot...
So im happy about the result and hope this will last and not fry in the next weeks...
Honestly It's running quite well and fast too.
Thanks everybody and good luck
p.s.
And Here, as promised, the answer from Intel :

The document does not list all the processor models but it is the correct document for your processor family (http://ark.intel.com/products/family/59136/2nd-Generation-Intel-Core-i7-Processo rs#@Mobile). "1Gb, 2Gb, and 4Gb DDR3 DRAM technologies" refer to SDRAM density, it is not about capacity as it is usually expressed in GB (instead of Gb). SDRAM density depends on the total amount of memory chips on the stick and per side (SDRAM organization). Memory modules rated or sold as 1600 MHz may or may not run at 1600 MHz; this depends on the Serial Presence Detect. If the SPD is 1333 MHz it will run at 1333 MHz by default unless it is configured manually. If the memory runs at 1600 MHz (by SPD or set up manually), the memory controller might be running at a higher clock speed than what it was designed for, this may cause issues along the way.

Hello,
We have two MBPs on an Asus router (N56U) and we find that only one computer can connect at a time. Within a few seconds of the other connecting, the one that was connected disconnects. When we try to log on again, we're told that the connection timed out. Or it "connects" but there is no internet. Any advice?
Thank you!
ChristianHi Silvergc,
Thank you for this. I agree: the problem seems to be either the router or the modem. I now have an Airport Extreme and am hoping this solves the problem.
Only now I have another problem--the airport utility can't find the airport extreme if I plug in an external harddrive into the airport extreme. I should start another thread for this, yes?
Thanks again Silvergc.
Yours,

This is your choice. They should not be insisting. If you can afford it it is a good buy but lots of people go without it. -

I have a MBP retina display, early 2013, 512GB SSD storage& I want to upgrade it into a 768GB SSD storage, would that be possible WITHOUT replacing my current storage disks with the new 768GB ?keeping the 512GB&only adding a 256 GB disk?! please advise (:
The main error in this position is thinking ANY sized SSD can be "storage"
Any Macbook SSD should be idealized as a working platform computer system, containing all your applications, documents, and weekly-use necessary files; and all media files such as ‘big-data’ (music/PDF collections/video/pictures), unless directly needed in the near future, should be kept off the computer and on external storage USB or likewise bare hard drives.
You cant do what you want without removing the internal SSD
Officially, it is not possible for an end user to upgrade the storage in any Retina Display MacBook Pro model after purchase
Get a nice 1TB USB external HD for $65
