Do I have a Screw Loose - or is it in my mind?

Hi
Just bought a used Mac yesterday and after fixing disconnected fans with the help of maclover I noticed there might be a screw missing from where the metal cover over the CPUs slips in just below the case (I hope thats clear enough).
Maybe I should post a URL to a photo?
Any one know what type of screw is needed and where I could get one - the vendor (a business) says it will cost £19 - sounds madness for a single screw - he says its a plastic one.
Wish I knew the history of the machine - the serial number says only 3 months old.
Thanks

Thank you kindly for that info - apparently the supplier was quoted £19 in the UK.
From here:
http://www.applepalace.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=4423
looks like that price is for a pack of 10.
Its a used PC - only 3 months old - so I don't know why anyone would want to take that off - weird?
Hope it doesn't call the warranty into question - but can't see why as there doesn't look like any harm has been done - but they might be funny about it.
I may have to try and get my money back as I don't really want a machine which has been fiddled with so much - two of the fan cables were disconnected too. Only had it 24 hours.
Thanks

You can make the collages easily if you have iWork.  Just open a letter sized page in landscape mode and drag the photos onto the page, rotate and postiion as necessary.  Then do a Print ➙ PDF ➙ Save PDF to iPhoto to get a 200 dpi jpeg version of the Pages page into iPhoto.  From there you can add it to your book and use a blank page with the option to have an image as the backbround.
If you have a 3rd party image editor that supports layers you can create the collage with it.

  • I may have totally screwed myself but...after installing Yosemite without checking first, my CS4 Design Premium suite wouldn't open. So I deinstalled it, but I only have disks for my old CS3. When I got the CS4 upgrade I downloaded it. What can I do??

I may have totally screwed myself but...after installing Yosemite without checking for potential problems with Adobe software, my CS4 Design Premium suite wouldn't open. So after consulting some forums, I deinstalled it, but I only have disks for my old CS3. When I got the CS4 upgrade I downloaded it, back in 2011... What can I do?? Everything was fine before I upgraded that *#$%* Yosemite.

  • Stupid Question :) I took some video on my iphone but I did not flip the phone horizontally - have I screwed up the sizing and it will never import into imovie to edit it?

Stupid Question I took some video on my iphone but I did not flip the phone horizontally - have I screwed up the sizing and it will never import into imovie to edit it?

You can do this using Quicktime Pro 7:
Open MOV file in QT Pro (QT 7.6.6)
    Window -> Show Movie Properties
    select "Video Track"
select "Visual Settings" from lower window
    check "Preserve Aspect Ratio"
Click on appropriate rotation icon (MOV rotates!)
Click back on the open MOV in Player Window
    FILE -> Save
You can also do this using TransformMovie, available here:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21859
Also, MPEG Streamclip can rotate video while maintaining the aspect ratio as well as the interlacing when converting to DV, which is what iMovie prefers as an input:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
There is also a plug-in for iMovie from GeeThree called rotate/scale that might do the job:

  • I accidentally hit the stop (x) button when the "empty secure trash" process was going on. Have I screwed up my computer? Can I continue the "Empty Secure Trash" later?

I was cleaning my caches which was taking forever to clean up. (more than 4 hours). I accidentally hit the stop (x) button when the "empty secure trash" process was going on. Have I screwed up my computer? Can I continue the "Empty Secure Trash" later?

Just restart your computer.   Then go to Finder menu and change 'Secure empty trash' to Empty trash.
Unless you work with state secrets you really don't need secure empty trash which takes seven times longer to do its job.    Empty trash is fine for all but the afore-mentioned secret files.

  • My Air has a screw loose

A small screw fell out from the bottom of my MacBookAir while traveling.  There are plenty to hold the laptop in place until I get to a store, but our technicians here could not replace it.  They advised that it was not catchin on the "receiving " end and possibly some piece on the inside has come loose.  While I am no computer genius, having loose parts floating around my laptop are, in fact, concerning to me.
Can anyone advise if there is a nut or other receptable inside the housing and whether I am OK to wait until I get home, or shoudl I rush over to a local Apple store.
    Thanks
    David

    Hi there,
The case of the MBA is two solid pieces of aluminum. The bottom one is the thin rectangular cover and the top one is the bigger block holding the keyboard and motherboard. If you opened the bottom case you will see that the screws fit into small holes that are drilled into the aluminum top case. So no way there is any "loose" pieces inside your MBA. However, it seems as if the hole your screw should fit in was not built well enough. If your Mac is still udner warranty run to get it fixed. If not, the Apple guys will most certainly have you change the full top case. Last time I check that was around Eur 180!!!

  • Went back from Tiger to Panther and have really screwed up...

I have been unsuccessfully trying to get an HP Color Laser Jet 2600n to print with a GC iMac running Tiger, and finally decided Tiger just won't play nice with it, as I have another older G3 iMac running Panther that will print. So, I decided to go back to Panther on the first G3. And like a moron, didn't bother to read ahead of time online if there was anything I should do. And so I archived settings and preferences, and now cannot login to the computer. Is there anything I can do, or have I just royally screwed myself? I tried reinstalling Panther using the disk, and it installed again, but I still can't login- when I booted the computer using the disk, it didn't give me the archive option; it just installed the software.
Is there anything I can do? Anything at all? Oh, I'm so mad at myself!

Do you have another Mac? If so, you could boot your machine into target disk mode (hold down 't'), hook it up using a firewire cable to the other Mac and recover your stuff that way. Essentially, target disk mode turns the computer into a very expensive hard drive.
Alternatively, if you have an external drive you could boot from, you could install OS X on that drive, boot from that and try to recover the data that way.
The best option depends on what you have available to work with. If you post back details of what' available, somebody can help you figure out the best strategy.

  • Screw Loose - Missing Screw

I recently (less than a week ago) bought a brand new MBP 15".  I love this machine; however, there is one problem.  Just today I noticed that the screw in the middle on left side (as it's sitting on my lap so that I can type on it) was loose.  Because it's a phillips, I thought I would try to tighten it, no dice.  I ignored the problem and then not even an hour later the screw fell out onto my bed.  I haven't been able to find it, but I want to replace it.  Can anyone give me the specs on what kind of screw to buy?  If the screw is not available in hardware stores, I should be able to get one from my friend who owns a computer repair shop.  Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

I would. You're certainly within the buyer's remorse period so there's no reason to put up with it. Let BB exchange it for you.

  • RAID problem... i might have really screwed up.

    Hello,
This sounds like some malware has hijacked your Firefox and is changing your search engine preferences without permission.
    Please try the following:
    * View your Firefox Add-ons and [[Disable or remove Add-ons|remove]] any that you didn't install yourself. It is possible that a toolbar has installed as an add-on and is causing the problem.
    * Look through your list of Windows installed programs and manually uninstall any that you think might be involved (e.g. if they mention Ask).
Once you have done that I suggest you run a virus scan to ensure that nothing remains of the malware that caused the issue. As well as running your standard virus scan software I recommend that you run a couple of additional scans. These free programs scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
    * [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware]
    * [http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro/ Hitman Pro]
    * [http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/default.aspx Microsoft Safety Scanner]
Once the malware that caused the original problem is completely gone from your computer you should find that the problem is gone.
However it may be necessary to reset a number of Firefox settings that the malware altered. The easiest way to do this would be to do a Firefox Reset. This will return Firefox to its default settings. Your personal information (history, bookmarks etc) will be saved but you will need to reinstall your add-ons. See here for how to do a reset:
[[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]]
Also see here for more information:
[[Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page]]
I hope this helps. Let me know if not.

  • I have managed to loose an inbox subfolder and have Mozbackup can i restore it from there i so exactly how. Thanks Andy

One of the sub folders I have created within my inbox has vanished. It is of course possible I have deleted it accidently but if I have it is not in the Recycle Bin. I have Thunderbird backed up with MozBackup is it possible to restore the folder from there.
If this can be done how do I find a particular folder and restore it.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated
    Andy

Is the folder located under "local folders" or as a part of another account?
If another account, is it IMAP or POP?
On the assumption it is under local folders.
Help menu (Alt +H) > troubleshooting information
    Press the show folder button.
(Everything from here is outside Thunderbird. You might close it to prevent confusion of terms)
    Open the mail folder.
    Open the "local folders" folder
There should be a collection of files. for example trash and trash.msf
If you have folder there that contains other folders you will also see sdb folders. So as I have folders in my trash I have a trash.sdb folder.
Of the three, the file without the extension is your mail. The msf file is an index that also contains tags. If you do not use tags deleting it will result in it being recreated when Thunderbird starts without data loss.
Opening the sdb file if it appears will take you into that folder and it's sub folders.
So to your original question. Yes you could recover just that file from a mozbackup. Probably best to rename the pvc file to Zip and usae a zip utility to get just that file from the archive, but in reality I think you will find the file is already in the folder (sometime they just do not display.)
If the file is still there but simply not showing. Return to the original folder you opened from Thunderbird. (the one with abook.mab, your address book, in it) and delete the foldertree.json file (make sure Thunderbird is not running). It will be recreated when Thunderbird starts, but startup will just take a little longer than normal.

  • Trying to use windows in high contrast mode but DW CC goes all black background too and I loose code coloring. I dont mind the black, but code coloring must be essential

Is there a way to keep the code coloring when using windows in high contrast appearance?

Sorry, I don't have your version, but have you checked in your personal configuration folder and editing these files?

  • Anybody have a Tiger reinstall walkthrough (with FCS needs in mind)?

    Hi all,
I upgraded to FCS2 from FCP 5.1.4. Though I've had no really major problems, I've been somewhat disappointed by slow and buggy performance in all of the new apps.
I've seen a number of posts saying a fresh install of Tiger (including this, that and the other steps) have cleared things up.
I haven't been on Macs all that long, and I've never reinstalled a Mac OS. Has anybody seen or written a good walkthrough on doing this, with any special considerations for FCS in mind?

Be carfeul of dragging - it will not prodce a bootable drive
Couple of other apps are also SuperDuper
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
SuperDuper can be used for "free" - but if you purchase it, it has more features. For $27 bucks it is worth having the full blown version
    and Retrospect http://www.emcinsignia.com/products/smb/retroformac/
After making the copy boot off of it to make sure everything worked okay
If the second 500GB drive is mostly free and you are not using it as a system disc, you can install on that drive. Sounds like it is an easy back up(?) As an aside, make sure to remove all devices from the computer, such as FW drives etc., before installing. It is usually best just to have a keyboard, mouse and monitor attached at the time.
Anyway, a bit off topic, but since you are newer to Mac, get one of the back up utilities (or two) - they are definately worth it. There are also some other things that are good to have in the arsenal - one that is great to have is Diskwarrior as a troubelshooter. Also repairing permissions is something you should learn - Disk Utility -> Highligh Disc - > Repair Permissions. If things go awry that is one of the first things to do. Usually a good idea to do after installing software.

  • Possible loose objects inside my laptop

Hey there, I recently noticed that I might have a screw loose or something inside of my laptop (Toshiba Qosmio). When I picked it up today, I could hear something rolling around inside. Seems to be close to the back (roughly rolls in a horizontal line from speaker to speaker if i tilt it, although other times it seems to get caught on something). Now, this has probably been loose for a while if I just noticed it, plus I'm using it now with no problems, but I'm worried if this could have a chance of being a very serious problem. Any recommendations? Should I take it in to the shop, or would that be a waste of money?

Better have it looked at one of the Toshiba Authorized Service Centers.
