Do I have an Airport Card??

I just got a refurbised PowerMac G5 and I have only had PCs before so I'm just learning how to do everything. I would like to set it up the internet wirelessly since I cannot get an ethernet cord long enough to connect to where it is located (plus don't want a cord strung across my house).
But anyway, I learned that Macs use airport but I'm not sure if I have an airport card installed. I click system preferences and then Network and airport is not listed. Also, when I click About this Mac then More Info then down to Network, I click AirPort card and it says "No Information Found." So does this mean that I don't have an airport card? There is an airport antenna slot on the back of the tower. If I don't have an aiport card, how can I hook up to the internet wirelessly?
Hope this doesn't sound too stupid but I'm a newbie with Macs. Thanks for any info.

I bought a Power Mac G4 (version=3.3) second hand from my company. It is running Mac OS 10.2.8 and Microsoft Office X. I wish to connect it to my BT broadband hub. Not true. Those adaptors were intended for the iMac G3 (long outdated) and only the iMac G3. All G4 machines just take AP Cards the way they are.

Actually I HIGHLY recommend upgrading to OS X Leopard. Tiger is no longer supported by hardly anybody (Apple, Adobe, etc) and Leopard is still the minimum for most things nowadays. If you want more life out of this Mac, then I would highly recommend installing Leopard. And as mentioned above you NEED a Retail DVD. (The Leopard DVD has a little Purple in the Center of the DVD and a BLACK X in the center.

But when I click on it, it says no information found.

If it is a Mac Pro it is not a G4 and not a G5.
All Mac Pros have Intel CPUs. The older G3, G4 and G5 machines all had PowerPC chips and were called Power Macs, not Mac Pros.
Mac Pro towers have two optical drive trays (CD/DVD) in front. The PPC PowerMac G5 has only one. Earlier PPC machines like the G3 and the G4 don't have the distinctive aluminum "cheesegrater" housing.
The last G5 was manufactured in the summer of 2006, then Apple switched to Intel in August of that year.
USB WiFi adapters are very cheap and much less troublesome than Airport cards.

No, you would use an Ethernet cable between the G5 and the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).

How do I know if I have an Airport Card? I know when I purchased the computer I got the bluetooth but don't recall about Airport. Do they come together or separate?

If there is a Apple Store or CompUSA near you, you can get the Airport card from them for $99 plus tax. Either store will require you to have them install it though. The Apple Store installed the Airport Card I purchased from them for free since I just bought the Mini. I don't know what either store charges for installation but I strongly recommend not trying to install the Airport Card yourself because it is one of the harder upgrades for the Mini to do.

If both your MacBook Pro and iPod are unable to "see" the Wi-Fi network provided by the AirPort Express, it is most likely NOT that you are missing an "airport card," but the Express may be the issue instead.
One quick test is to see if either device can "see" other Wi-Fi networks. If they can, then you can definately rule both of them out as the issue.
By default, the AirPort Express will broadcast an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. Can either device see this network? If not, then I would recommend that you perform a "factory default" reset on the Express, and then, check again.

Does Mac Mini have inferior Airport Card?

Ok after days on the phone with numerous Apple tech reps and no answers I want to hear from other Mini users.
Problem is I cannot get the Mini to pickup the Airport Extreme base station in the other room which is only 17' away, through one wall. Have eliminated all possible interference issues. Changing channels in the Airport utility didn't help. When the Mini was in the same room as the Airport I had no connectivity issues. Airport was hard wired to an older iMac (lampshade).
Now if I move the Airport closer and in direct view of the Mini (in separate room) I can pick up the Airport on the Mini. Not a strong signal but I do get a wireless connection. Soon as I move Airport back and out of view it drops. Also if I close door to room signal drops.
Next thing I did was reverse the computer scenario. I hard wired the Mini to the Airport and placed the iMac in the other room. Had no connectivity issues here at all, in fact the iMac had a very strong signal even with the Airport placed over 20' away behind a wall and door closed. To me that seemed to eliminate any interference issues.
So next call to the Apple tech I suggested that maybe I have a bad card in my Mini. He respectfully disagreed and said the iMac has a better antenna and that is why it had no connectivity issues. So I asked him if the Mini Airport card was inferior to the iMacs, even though the iMac was about 6 years old. He said no and then said I needed to speak with higher level Apple techs. He transferred me but after 2 hours on hold I hung up.
So do I have a bad card in the Mini or is just an inferior product? Seems to me that I shouldn't have these problems connecting the Mini wirelessly. Seems absurd to have to have the Mini and Airport base station in direct view to get a connection. Anyone else with these issues? I especially want to hear from users in 12,000' MacMansions using Airport and the Mac Mini.

The simple answer to your question is no, the mini doesn't have an inferior Airport card. In fact, it uses a standard card that can also be found in other Apple products. However, it does have a smaller antenna, and of course the antenna is mounted inside what amounts to a metal enclosure which makes the system a little less sensitive to wifi signals - particularly if there is anything placed directly on top of the mini's casing. It also means the mini's wifi reliability is affected a little more by sources of interference in the area, thus things like microwave ovens, cordless phones, other wifi networks on the same or adjacent channels, structures which reflect or deflect radio signals etc will tend to impact on the mini's signal strength and connectivity somewhat more than might be the case with other wifi devices in the same location.
Typically you will find that even small changes in the location of the mini or wifi access point will affect signal quality. In this situation I would be inclined to download a copy of something like AP Grapher (from www.versiontracker.com) and use it to examine the strength and quality of signal, trying to find a location where the mini or access point give optimal signal strength and lowest noise.
It is also possible that while the Airport card in your mini is working perfectly well, the connection to the antenna is not firmly made. If the system has been worked on at all, this is not an unusual problem, and there have been indications of some minis being sold where the airport antenna is not firmly connected, giving poor (or even no) wifi connectivity.
I must say that at one point I had a very poor connection to my domestic wifi from a G4 mini used as a media center, such that moving data to it became quite tedious and prone to failure. I found the Airport signal strength was generally quite low, despite there being little more than about 20 feet between the system and base station. I checked the Airport base station's transmission strength and found it had been set low, so reset that to full power and that helped a great deal, but eventually replaced the Apple base station with a Belkin wifi router, and that has resolved the problem completely.
Since wifi is merely radio at a frequency and power that is susceptible to interference, deflection, absorption and degradation, even over short ranges, there can be many factors affecting signal strength and quality. Usually a bit of experimentation with positioning devices helps a great deal, but you may want to get your mini checked to ensure the antenna is correctly located and firmly connected.

First Gen iMac does not have a airport card installed. How do I install one?

I purxhased a ist Generation iMac G5 on ebay and they don't come with a airport card installed. I would like to add it now. The bracket is there but it doesn't look like anything else is. How do I install an express card in this machine, and how does the antennae look like if there is one there.

Did all dual-USB iBooks come with an airport card installed? I ask because I just bought one from eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270303646742) (model M6497) and the owner didn't know if it had an airport card installed. Of course, I don't know if the laptop's been modified at all, I was just trying to get an idea of how likely it was that it would come ready for wireless. Thank you

How do I find out if I have a Airport Card already intalled?

I just got an Airport Extreme but there is no Airport icon in my networks dropdown list or in system preferences...how do I know if I even have the card already installed or not? I bought my PowerMac in 2008. Will the only way I will know for sure be when I connect the ethernet cable, or will it mess anything up if I don't have the card? Because I don't know if I do or not.

There is no Wi-Fi to choose, only: Ethernet 1, Bluetooth, Ethernet 2, Fire Wire and Bluetooth PAN.
pon more research I discovered this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3024 which shows that my Mac Pro is not compatable. Apple should really put more info in the system requirements for the airport extreme, I am very disappointed that I am now going to have to pay a 25% restocking fee upon return.

What is needed to network 2 computers using Airport card

I know I need an airport card in my eMac, but is there any other cards that have to be in the computer? I want to network my eMac with an iMac using a DSL line. The eMac will be downstairs and the iMac will be upstairs. I'm waiting for delivery from Apple of the iMac. It has everything built in that is needed to network but my eMac doesn't. To make my eMac wireless is all I have to buy is an Airport Card and a Wireless Gateway for the iMac which is the computer connected to the DSL modem and Wireless USB adapter with connects to the eMac? What type of Airport Card do I need to buy for my eMac (model #'s etc.) It is the card that inserts above the super drive in the front of the computer. Is there any software that is needed to install Airport?

I am also doing some configuration changes (we have one Imac and two eMac's)
but one eMac does not have a airport card and is hardwired (ethernet) to the high speed cable modem then a apple airport. One Imac and the Emac with a airport card work fine, it is a bit tricky finding the correct airport card (or airport extreme card if you have a ATI graphics card (use about the mac/system profiler then click on more to see if you have a graphics card (which affects which airport card you need, there are alot of resellers on the net so you should find what you want.
If in doubt there is a free program mactracker which provides data on every mac made (available off off versiontracker.com (free site just register) it will guide
you on the type of card needed. I was quite amazed at the amount of different spec eMac's made in their relativealy short history.
Macwireless.com does sell eMac cards (for two models) but also antenna type
or flash drive appearing USB based wireless connectors that may help.
I found the mactracker program helpful (alot) as alot of web sites provide some vague info and I would hate to se you get stuck with a non returnable card.
The actual card install does not look hard (its done through the cd rom drive door.
I am not sure why we did not get a airport card for ours when we bought it.
Wish I did as it would have saved some $ (maybe) and surf time making sure I find the right one.
We did have a antenna wireless antenna for a "green" Imac (long gone) and it ran on OS9 but it was finicky when we had the airport base station upstairs
and the Imac and antenna in the basement (about 50-75 feet)

How do I connect a MacPro without an airport card to my wireless network

I have a MacPro that does not have an airport card. I have a Verizon FIOS wireless router. I connected my time capsule to the router with an Ethernet cable and my MacBook Pro has no problem connecting to the network. I placed my airport extreme upstairs in my office and joined the wireless network. I connected my MacPro to the airport extreme with an Ethernet cable but I cannot get on the Internet. It says the Ethernet has a self assigned IP and cannot connect to the Internet . What am I doing wrong?

To add to what Bob said, I've drawn out (on a sheet of paper) what you have described in your initial post, it seems you have an Airport Extreme 'connected wirelessly' to the Verizon wifi router? is that correct?
IF so, your Mac Pro's network settings should be set to DHCP via ethernet? I'm presuming that you can connect your Macbook pro to the Verizon Wifi using a local DHCP IP address automatic network settings right ?
Providing you can see the Airport Extreme 'upstairs' your Mac Pro should connect in exactly the same manner.
Does your Mac Pro have a valid IP address ?
If you can't get the Airport Express to 'connect/talk' to your wireless router, I would ask if you're using WPA/WPA2 secured network keys or an Open unsecured Network? the airport express probably wants the Wifi Key to 'handshake' with the wifi router you have.

If all the above are correct, you should be able to go into finder and 'see' the Airport Extreme And TimeCapsule, and laptop (if u have it connected), as well as your Mac Pro- if it all works right and sharing is turned on those devices.
First start by trying go into Aiport Utility in Applications > Utilities (or via finder) and see if the util can see your airport Extreme - using ur laptop ideally ) and try and get your Wireless extended.

I've always just connected to the internet via an ethernet cable to my router/modem, but now I don't want the long cord going from the phone line to the office within the house. I have a Airport Express and was wondering if I could set this up in the lounge and connect my computer/laptop/stereo etc.
To do this do I need to have an airport card installed. If so, which one and are they easy to instal?

If you remove the side door and look down at the mother board, you can observe if the airport card is there. You can also use ASP . There are kits for the bluetooth and airport card available. Installation is not difficult. The difficult part is finding the connector wires. these are tucked at the top border of the mother board. The other issue is which lead goes to which connector. You can find the answer on the internet, just Google it.
Bottom line on the original Mac Pro the wireless reliability with that card is short range. Must have not too much interference.

"No Airport Card Installed" After 10.5.6 updgrade...

After I installed the 10.5.6 upgrade using software update (from 10.5.5), I no longer have an airport card detected. It does not show up in system profiler either. Is there anyone that knows why this happened and how to fix it?

I've had this issue - if you have AppleCare, call to log a support case. They will have you reset the pram, which worked for me. However, I was told it may happen again, at which time they will replace the airport card, so it sounds like there may be a known problem with the cards.
