Do I have enough "horsepower" to adequately run Leopard?
Hello there,
This are my specs: Dual 1GHz MDD, 2 GB RAM, ATI RAdeon 9800 Pro (128), Maxtor 500 GB (16 MB cache) for system and apps, Maxtor 500 GB (16 MB cache) for documents. Both drives are connected to the ATA100 on-board controller.
Is this enough to run Leopard as smoothly as my MDD runs Tiger?
BTW, my MDD has been ROCK solid and has given me unbelievable reliability!

PS - I also have a back-up drive (ATA66 controller), an external back-up drive (Firewire) and an external bootalbe replica of my system and apps drive (Firewire).

Your question is if you have enough horsepower to run Leopard? Well, lets see... Leopard requires at least a min of 867mhz G4 horsepower. You have 1ghz, and esp it is a dual which doubles the horsepower - Yes, you meet the horsepower. Memory: 2GB which is more than enough for Leopard. Graphics card is ATA 9800 pro? Yes, you meet that also esp for core image - also let me know if core image speeds up Leopard dramatically.
Two monster Maxtor 500GB hard drives - why all that just for documents and stuff, unless you intend to set up a RAID-0, or stripe raid?
Does your MDD also give you noise problems? In other words, do you suffer from the noise we have all had to deal with, though mine is not so bad anymore.
Well, I think you have more than enough horsepower to run Leopard. and I have a dual 1.25 which makes it even more.
Be prepared to see a increase in start up time to the desktop as well..

I am trying to install a program on my Mac Book Pro Retina from a Apple SuperDrive. Every time I run the installer, it says I do not have enough memory to install. However, I definitely have enough memory (186.74 GB). The program takes only 550 MB. Any ideas why?
Thanks for the clarification on the terms. I consider myself proficent at my computer, but not exactly in its inner-workings! I have 8 GB of memory installed.
I am still confused as to why I do not have any space for the program. This is the exact error message I get: "There is not enough free space on Macintosh HD disk. The Print Shop 2 application requires about 550 MB to be installed. Free some disk space and try again."

I'm trying to run Bootcamp on my 15" Macbook Pro (Maverick). I have 60 gig available on my computer's hard drive and have 250 gig on a separate hard drive that I have attached, which is single partitioned (MS-DOS FAT). It keeps saying "The startup disk does not have enough space, you must have 28 gig of free space available" Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I'm just reading what turbostar has kindly written and it appears that perhaps, if I take advice from you both, I need to free more space up on the computer's hard drive?
With the external hard drive; would it be advisable to defragment? Know of any defrag freeware for Mac OSX?

My computer is running SO slow. The intermet also keeps freezing up and I have to turn airport off then back on/refresh before it will work again. I dont have enough space on my start up disc to run certain programs. It will say I need to quit programsin order for things to run. Easiest way to fix? Im not great with computers!
Running mac os x version 10.6.8Easiest way is to have an external drive to which you copy the things you store like pictures, movies, and music
which take up a lot of space. Then delete them fron the main drive and clean it up with one of the maintenance utilities. You can readily access the external drive's contents whenever you wish.

I am getting the following error when trying to open iTunes: "The iTunes application could not be opened. You do not have enough access privileges for this application." I am logged in with the admin (and only) user account on my laptop, so I'm confused as to why this would start happening all of the sudden.
I poked around in the control panel trying to find random options that would fix it, but nothing has. I'm running Windows 7.

I have a 2007 Mac Pro running 10.7.5 and I want to replace a drive and install Lion
I have a 2007 Mac Pro running 10.7.5 with dual core intel 2.66 with 13 GB ram. I want to replace my startup disk 250GB (which has all my apps) but has been lagging ( I thinks it's an original drive) with the new HD in bay 2 (4 T drive) which I installed this week. I tried to install lion onto it and it said I needed a newer version 10.7.3-I have time machine as my backup on an external. All the bays are full and I'd like to trade them out sooner or later to get more room for movies, etc. The last OSX disk I have is Snow Leopard and that was rejected as not new enough. Can someone help me with info on installing Lion on the new drive. I know how to make it the startup disk after, but I can't seem to load 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8 (not supported on my older mac pro.) ANNE ZFirstly, time to get rid of the 2 x 512MB FBDIMMs in there, they add more heat and use more watts then they add to the system. If you need more, and 4 or 8 DIMMs is ideal, Amazon has 2x2GB sets $22 - about 1/50th what I paid for 1GB new.

Pick up Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com to clone the system to the SSD

7-8 years overdue for new system drive! amazed it lasted this long. An SSD plus some WD Black 2TB drives or larger should do the trick.
you can also put the SSD in the lower optical drive bay and use one of the two ODD "spare" SATA ports for the SSD - an SSD is the best way to improve the performance of our old Mac Pro 2006-7 models.
When you downloaded the Lion installer that was when to create a flash type installer with Lion DiskMaker.
If you have put in a new-ish graphic card then OS X 10.6.0 may not support it. -
Suppose I have enough ram for 2 or three VMWare fusion systems to that could benefit from file sharing. Is it possible to configiure each VMWare funsion instance to have a common read only file share on my desktop and a common read/write area on on my desktop?
This would allow me to extend the power and mustle of my Mac Book Air, Retina Display system to its best advantage. Whether native Mac processing or speciality linux or Windows systems as needed.
I am having trouble allowing more than one system to share the same read only and the same read/write areas so that software does the file locking and merge controls. Even if these do not share a common read/write area, it would be truly handy for drive space management for them to share a common read only area.

DonIt really denpends on the os running in the vm and what the permissions are set to on those shares.
I run a few vms on both a mac at home and windows at work and all other computers in my home or at work can connect to the vms without any problems. Even multiple computer at the same time.
It also depends on how you have set the vm up for networking. If you are setting it up as nat, instead of bridged, that can also cause problems access it from multiple system. With nat the vm is on its own network branch. -
Can I back up my iPhone 4S to my ipad 3 (64 gb)? I do not have a computer running Mountain Lion. Our desktop still runs Tiger, so I purchased the 3rd generation iPad with 64 gb thinking it had had plenty of room to backup my iPhone photos. I used a camera connection kit and transferred about 1100 old photos from my camera roll on my iPhone to my ipad. I then deleted pictures from my iPhone and now my camera roll has only 357 photos. However, in the Settings, under "About" it says I have 2147 photos. Why? I only have a total of 216 photos in all my albums. However, now I don't have enough space in iCloud to backup either device. Why not? Any help, any advice, appreciated please! I spent a long time on the phone with Apple today and they couldn't solve the problem.

iCloud only give so much space for free storage, then if you exceed the limit of 5gb you have to pay for additional storage. -
I had a graphic design business for 10 years and at the time found Freehand to be the best solution. Now I'm an InDesign convert but many of the old freehand files I wish I could open and convert to something in CC. I need to rebuild my portfolio and many of those old Freehand files are great works of art. I no longer have a system that will run Freehand, is there something I can run that would convert these files to Illustrator or something usable. I wish adobe would at least make a patch so I can run it on my Mac long enough to get the key files I want. Anyone have any suggestions or am I just screwed and 10 years of art is gone...

As to InDesign, I have been using FreeHandMX to export my files to PDF and trying out these two converters:
PDF2DTP | Markzware
PDF to InDesign converter
The Markzware converter seems better and they have been eager to hear from FreeHand users. Where conversion isn't exact is text and takes some tweaking. Also any problems Illustrator had with converting FreeHand files shows up in InDesign.
As for running FreeHand on the latest Macs, virtualization with Parallels and Fusion running Snow Leopard is successful and seamless. Also using WIN versions of FreeHand with CrossWeaver and WINE on Mavericks.

Since installing 10.7.3 my downloads say that I do not have enough space on my computer for the download. These downloads are never more that 200 megs or so and I have 270 gigs left on my hard drive. Somehow the remaining space on my hard drive is not being correctly read. What can I do to fix this? I have run permissions repair several times, but to no avail.
Th downloads do not finish. I am dowloading to a file on my desktop called MUSIC, but it first starts to download to my desktop and then I move it to the MUSIC file also on my desktop and I have been doing this without incident using 10.7.2 as well as 10.7.1 and 10.7.

Please for referral information, how can I get more disk space, or actually information and guidelines that can have enough free disk space. NO notebook is a mass storage device, so dont try to turn it into one, it doesnt work that way.
Unless youre using it every couple weeks, its static data and should be on an external HD
In the case of a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro Retina with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace. You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation. -

Time Machine says my external hard drive does not have enough space for the current backup. It needs 34 G out of a 250G hard drive. All that is on the drive is earlier backups. I recently added memory, which may confuse Time Machine into thinking it is a new computer. How can I erase old backups and complete this one?

See #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't clear it up, how much data is on your Mac? If TM is only trying to back-up 34 GB, it should be able to delete old backups to do that (assuming you're running Lion).
It sounds like your backups may be corrupted. Try to repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
I recently added memory, which may confuse Time Machine into thinking it is a new computer.
If that's all you did, no.
How can I erase old backups and complete this one?
Just erase the drive per #1 or #2 of Using Disk Utility. -
I have an imac 21.5' running mavericks. Converting vinyl to digital. My turntable connects to a Sony DVMC-DA2 media converter which connects to the imac with a thunderbolt firewire adapter. When I try to import media I get a faint music sound but no files download. Help!
The DVCM-DA2 does not have a phono input, so is unable to work from a turntable (not enough gain, and no RIAA equalization, both of which are required for Vinyl)
You will need a converter that has a phono input (to the RIAA standard)
