Do I have esata on my MBP???

Hey guys,
I am trying to get a new external hard drive and know that I can go with Firewire 400 or 800 on my MBP but I was wondering if someone could tell me if I have an esata port... I am not sure what they look like.
I have the MacBook Pro (not the unibody new one but the older gen). Its the 2.2 Core 2 Duo 15inch...
Let me know if you need more specs to verify which model and if it has esata...

I was wondering if someone could tell me if I have an esata port
Download Mactracker from Macupdate & it will tell you everything you need to know about your model macbook pro. The utility is free.

I have a mid-2009 MBP and I've been using my BOSE Companion 20 with it for about half a year now. It was fine until recently, when i want to adjust the volume using the pod on the BOSE Companion 20, it will cause like a surge in volume, spiking it up and down. It will not stablise itself! It's very fustrating. Anybody with the same issue?

I have the BOSE Companion 5 speakers and have had the same problem. I've searched everywhere and gotten nowhere. My speakers are way past their warranty, so calling Bose would probably get me no where either. Only thing I can think of is that the speakers overheat which causes the spikes in the volume. I've tried unplugging them for a few minutes and then plug them back on. The problem does go away, but after about 5 minutes, same problem.

I'm possibly wrong here but I suspect opening a brand new MBP to add parts yourself will void the warranty.  It is probably in the small print.  I certainly would not risk it for an expensive Apple product.
Some (Windows) laptops have easy access to memory and disk slots that do not necessitate taking the complete back cover off.  However, Apple does not make life easy for you.
However, if you are going for a 'used' machine it is probably worth a try.
Not possibly, definitely wrong, Ram and Hard Drive are considered user replaceable and will not void the warranty if changed.

You should have gotten it with your computer. If it shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier, perform a custom installation of it from the computer's original disks. If it shipped with 10.7 or newer, you can get it from the Mac App Store for free.
In other cases, iOS and Mac OS X applications are separate products and purchases.

  • ESATA for 2009 MBP

I am looking to buy and external "toaster" type device where I can burn Hard Drives and store them off site for archival backup. I have a MacBook Pro 2009 and a "first generation" Mac Pro. I would like to use something faster than USB 2.0.
Is eSATA the way to go and can I upgrade the MBP with this http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other+World+Computing/EXP34SATA2F1/ or the MacPro with something similar for eSATA?
I know both of these have USB 2.0 and Firewire 400 and 800 but I don't know if USB 3.0 is compatible with either of these and I am not exactly sure how eSATA speeds compare to USB 2.0.
Anyone mind dropping a little info on this thread for me?
    Thanks,
    Jon

I'm thinking you should put a SSD in the present HD spot, even though it's SATA II, that would give you a stabiilty and speed boost for OS X and programs.
Partition it 50/50, then scheduale a auto-clone/update A to B every couple of days with Carbon Copy Cloner,
This will give you a option key bootable backup of OS X and programs, and undelete ability for presently working files while on the road. SSD's are very stable and shock resistant.
Get the 7,200 RPM drive, Zero Erase it with Disk Utiliy and format GUID OS X ext-j and place that in the optical slot. I hear of troubles using that as a boot option. Use this as a storage drive and for longer storage, larger files etc.
Then carry around a small backup drive (not port powered) and use CCC to clone that 7,200 RPM to the external and update it whenever it connects. CCC can be set to remind you to connect it as well so you don't forget.
As you should know, you can't install OS X from a external optical drive, so you will need CCC to clone the boot partition A to a blank external drive so you can option key boot off of that too in case the SSD or the Mac goes down and you don't know which to blame.

  • Does anybody have a functioning 17" mbp with a 6Gb/s SSD drive?

I ordered a MacBookPro 17" (June 2011) with the 7200rpm hard drive which is a slow drive, but comes at no extra cost with the machine.
The ssd's Apple ships with the mbp's are relatively slow and expensive, so I do not consider them an option. I therefore ordered an OWC Mercury Pro 6G (240GB) sata3 SSD drive and replaced the hard drive with it. Under both Snow Leopard and Lion I get beach balls almost continuously. Installing the ssd in a co-workers 15" mbp makes the drives work at over 500 mb/s, so the drive is not the problem.
I explained this to the people at AppleCare's helpdesk and they state, since I used a non Apple item, they can't help me. They tell me to go to a local reseller and have them install the ssd for me. This way the mbp is still valid for AppleCare. The local reseller won't touch my mbp since I bought it online at Apple (and not at his store), plus I did not buy the OWC drive in his store. In short, AppleCare is useless here. They claim I should've ordered one of the Apple ssd's (which are basically sata2 drives).
Since the 17" mbp supports sata3 and has the fastest processors of the mbp range (which is why I bought it in the first place) I do not understand why Apple would force me to 'downgrade' to a non current ssd. I work with large 3D drawing files as well as multilayered large photoshop files, so having a fast drive is very beneficial to my workflow. The hardware in the 13" and 15" mbp's support the functionality of a 6G ssd in practice, whereas the 17" mbp only does that on paper. Selling my 17" and swapping it for a 15" model seems the only option but I refuse to believe a company that claims to be technologically advanced can ignore having specifications that only work on paper. There is no record, comment or even gossip of Apple indicating this is a problem, let alone they are working on a fix, despite finding numerous forums online where people have the same problem I have.
So for the record, on the official Apple Support site, directed to both Apple developers and users:
Is there anybody that has a functioning 17" MBP with a 6Gb/s SSD?
If you have, please let me know the specs or your machine and drive so I can see if there is a solution to unleash the full potential of my MBP.
I believe there is no sadder sight than the sullen tread of a caged (osx) Lion. Help me free the desert's fallen king!! ;-)

Thanks wjosten for your reply. I filled out a feedback form.
To comment on AussieDJ's post: I tried the OWC shielding kit, doesn't work. The problems described with 6Gb/s ssd's were all with pre March MBP's. Mine is a June 2011 MBP so I figured the problem would've been solved in the mean time. I guessed wrong there. Since I waited for the release of OSX Lion (and the trim support functionality) I thought this would solve the spinning beach ball issue. I guessed wrong there as well. Can't return the ssd anymore (>30 days) so I glued the ssd on our offices "wall of shame". Being an architecture office we have everybody in the office put up poorly designed objects here (sort of a cool and uncool board but then labelled ***? and No way!). I should've glued y 17" MBP on this wall actually (since it's hardware does not work with the 6Gb/s ssd), but the bugger is too heavy and won't stick... ;-)
The worst part of the story is that my dad got his 6Gb/s ssd to wortk in his windows notebook...and he does not skip an opportunity to rub it in (your MBP can't do no 6G)!
Let's hope there will be an EFI update!

  • Thinking about upgrades to new quantum but..still have eSata

    Hi.
I'm thinking about upgrading to the new quantum boxes but I curently have about 20 shows on an external eSata that I just setup earlier this year.   I know theres no good way to pull off the shows but was wondering if theres any way to stop recording on the external and dwindle the shows off.
    any thougths are appreciated.
    Thx

My fisrt thought is to say to disconnect the esata drive unless you watch something.
But then items will be recorded to the local drive that won't transfer either.
So you either have to watch it all, or lose something when you migrate over.

  • Help! Have I "throttled" my MBP's disk IO?

Am concerned I may have "throttled" (whatever that means) my HD's IO.
It happened during an attempt to rid my "open with" list of duplicate entries. In Terminal, I ran the below command which, on my old iMac, would remedy a similar "open with" issue. :
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
However, on the MBP 13 (2010), Terminal responded with the message: Throttling Disk IO. (And, no, the duplicate "open with" entries remain.)
Throttling--the term sounds ominous. So, phoned AppleCare, spoke with two technicians, neither of whom understood why I would receive such a message, nor its contextual meaning.
Have posted in the OS X Technologies category, but sense I may need a broader net to catch an answer.
What have I done to my system? Do I need to undo it? Have I inadvertently slowed the system's disk IO? And, to my original problem, which has yet to be resolved, is there a safe way to rid the duplicate entries in the "open with" list?
My apology for such a convoluted question.
    Cluelessly yours,

  • Do I have to backup my MBP when I go check my computer about 'Service Battery'?

So recently I noticed that when I click my battery information it shows 'Service Battery'...I did my research and found that it's best to make an appointment at the Apple store. Now I was going to make an appointment right away but I am worried if I am going to lose everything on my computer since I have never done any backups on it. (I know, not a smart thing to do) So my question is if I should wait to buy a hard drive and then make an appointment or would everything still be on my computer after they are done seeing what the problem is?
A few more questions being how much does getting my computer checked by them cost? How much would a new battery cost if my computer is not covered anymore? Last being what is a great and not expensive hard drive for my 2012 MBP?
    Thank you.
(ALSO I dont really know if this is important but recently my original charger broke and I purchased a $20 one online, would that have anything to do with the whole 'service battery' problem??)

    >> How much would a new battery cost if my computer is not covered anymore?
US $129 or $199 depending if a Retina model.

If you purchased AppleCare, it's possible that both battery & original charger would be covered.

  • I have switched to a MBP from PC recently.

As mentiond in the title, I'm a MBP user now. I'm facing problem with my iPhone 4 (iOS 4.3.3) sync problem.
Previously i sync all my data (contacts, calendar, apps, music, video) with my PC's iTunes.
How can i sync my iPhone with my new MBP without erasing all the data in my iPhone?
I would like to save all my Apps data and settings as well.

  • Since I have installed ML my MBP is shutting down very slowly.

Sometimes it takes about 45 seconds and I see the grey ball ( don't know the right word! ) all the time. I already tried a clean install, but it didn't help.
When I had Lion, I never had this problem. I have a Crucial M4 SSD and I tried different firmwares - negative.
Has anybody else this problem and is there a solution?
I already tried reinstall and so on..
    Greets

I don't really understand why Lion slows down computers, but it obviously does. What worked for me is upgrading my memory from 2GB to 4GB. Also, check your hard drive space. If it is close to full, try upgrading your hard disk to a better model.
If neither of those work, you might have to do a clean reinstall of Lion. This involves cleaning out all your data and reinstalling your OS.
Cache-file cleaners like SpeedUp Mac ($29.99) can help a lot if Lion was pre-installed on your Mac, but if you installed Lion manually, they don't really do much.
Tip: NEVER try MacKeeper to make your Mac "faster": I had the misfortune of it wiping out all my data (movies, music, photos, iMovie projects, iPhoto photo books and faces, etc.)

  • Have 4 yr old MBP, running pathetically slow.  What can I do?

Have run the Disk Utility, not much changed.  What is peculiar is that when I use a newly created account, the system responds much better.  Could there be an issue with the acount, and if so, how can I remove or change the account but not lose the data or the assignment to the account?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
Take these steps when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.
