Do I have spyware on my iMac?

I'm wondering if my computer has been infected with spyware. I had McAfee on my pc but no protection on my Mac as I was told Macs don't need it. I read about Clamxav on this site yesterday and installed it and scanned my hard drive but it didn't uncover anything.
Anyway, yesterday and today when I visited this one website (cuteoverload.com), my browser (Safari) suddenly shut down and a message popped up that read: "http://scanner.av-best.info Alert! Your pc is at risk of virus and spyware attack. Your system requires immediate check! System Security Scanner will perform a quick and free scan of your pc for viruses and spyware programs."
It has a place where you click "ok" and if you do that Safari then opens and it takes you to a site called Virus Doctor. I shut down Safari then and started it back up but I'm wondering if this is happening because I've been infected with spyware or is it being generated from the website. When I googled Virus Doctor I found that "Virus Doctor (also known as VirusDoctor) is classified as a rogue software, a false anti-spyware application that claim to be the best in removing trojans and in real it does nothing, it displays false detections (files detected by Virus Doctor are inexistent or are trusted programs) and trick the user to buy the “full version”. This malicious program can also be promoted by malware and trojans as Zlob (a false video codec)."

Well, where is it being generated from? Is it coming from the website I visited? I've been visiting that website for a long time and never had a problem before. It's able to shut down my browser.

I can reboot and everything operates as normal for a few minutes or hours but then I lose all access again to anything on the hard drive. The computer is still up and running but no files can be accessed and certain websites cannot be acessed even though internet access appears to be normal. Disk utility can only find permission errors related to iTunes which can be repaired only to come back at the next scan (I would not think permission errors would have anything to do with the hard drive crashing). It does not seem to matter what program I am using at the time access is lost and it can lose access sometimes right after reboot when no program is running.

You will need to boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during restart and select it) to run Disk Utility/Disk Repair.

I have an early 2009 iMac need advice

I am new to this forum. As I mentioned in subject I have an early 2009 iMac with 4 GB of Ram. I am up to date with my operating system, running Yosemite 10.10.1.
My problem is that my computer is slow - very slow. It takes forever for the computer to start up and once it up forever for programs to load. Mail is the best example taking it a minimum of 5 minutes to load and in the mean time nothing else will load. RecentlyI started running the disk utility and repairing permissions. That helps a tiny bit. I also got CleanMyMac 2 and use it as well. In reading some of the forum I noticed someone suggested to run an EtreCheck report and post its report which I have done. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Pay attention to what rkaufmann87 is saying, because I agree.
Chrome is very resource intensive.
It is possible you are running other memory intensive apps.
You have a lot of 3rd party additions loaded at boot time. Do you really need all of them? Even after you get rid of MacCleaner (as suggested by rkaufmann87).
Do you really need the seagate and WD drive software? The Mac is fairly good at accessing disks without 3rd party intervention.
Any of the 3rd party additions listed by EtreCheck that you do not need, you should consider uninstalling.

Either cut back on the RAM intensive apps, or get more RAM. At least 8GB, but if your Mac supports it, 16GB. Crucial.com and MacSales.com (OWC) are well respected by the long term forum contributes.

How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM. My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore. Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed. I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc. I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads. Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system. I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system. But are there other options to connect the new TC. Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above. after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working. Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant. I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work. The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network. Are we going backwards?

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??

I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC. the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.

You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

However, when I synch my iPhone to to my iMac all of the movies try to synch to the iPhone and this exceeds the available capacity (32) of the iPhone. So the question is, how do I make the movies available on Apple TV but not synch to my iPhone?

I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB). When I play video formats like xvid, mkv, avi iMac freezes and emits horrible sound,in service said the problem is not overheating. Not a problem with memory or hard disk because I placed second correct parts.The same problem is with OSX 10.6.8 and 10.8.4 and other players.Apple hardware test found no problem and tech tool pro found no fault.
After five days of testing in the service they can not found fault and it was decided to change the graphics card.
New graphics have been tested for two days but it is not reproduced divx ... but their test software which did not find any fault on the old graphics...
Do I have the right to complain if repair does not fix the problem because I use non apple softwere and video formats.

You could look at the System Profile for the info it presents for the card. But why wouldn't you think it's not up to date if you have the latest install (according to your sig above)?
What program are you trying to run? Is there anything in the system log?
I think it's the program that's having the problem and not anything with your video software.

How do I uninstall Mavericks and recover Lion? I have a brand new iMac and web pages stall or freeze since I installed Mavericks. I can't get it to download software for my printer when I connect it.

I have a brand new iMac. It was working fine until I downloaded Mavericks. Now I have web pages that freeze while trying to load. The blue in the address bar stalls and freezes. If I try to load from page 1 to a later page, or reverse that, I also have the same problem. I tried to connect my printer for the first time, and again, the blue progress bar froze. Then I got the yellow triangle telling me there was a connection problem. My internet connection is via an Air Card as that is my only option where I live. I packed up the whole new iMac and took it to my Air Card provider, where they also have very fast Wifi, and they had the same problem with Wifi. I use my Air Card with my MacBook and it works JUST GREAT! I really want to return to Lion. HELP.

The only way to retutn to Lion is to format your drive (erase, lose all) and either:
1. clone back the clone copy i hoep you have, or
2. first backup your files, then format and install Lion again
But really, mavericks works great. You have a problem. Find out why. First, what unusual software do oyu have installed that may be conflicting with it? Virus, system modifiers, etc? Second what OLD software do you have that might be the problem. finally, you might need to do a re-install if something errored during install.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?

If you select a mailbox, you should get an Edit button (easier to see in landscape mode). Clicking the button will provide you with check circles for the messages. You also get Delete and Move buttons at the bottom. Check the messages you want to move and then navigate to the mailbox you want to drop them into. I think as long as you can navigate to a mailbox you can move the messages to it.
In the Mac Mail application and probably Outlook on the Windows side, you also setup rules to move messages to specific mailboxes. If the mailboxes are stored on the server, then you can have the sorting done on the server and they should appear that way on the iPad. If your later messages do not show up, you may need to have the iPad app pulled down more messages until they are all showing.

I have added a new email address but kept my Id, but I get busy when trying from iPhone to iPad as they are clashing. Like find my iPhone app hence trying to keep them all on one account

I have just acquired an iMac desktop (about 4 years old). I want to connect to my Apple airport wireless network, but cannot remember the password. How can I access the password or, if necessary, reset it. I already use a MacBook Pro and an iPad on the network and don't want to jeopardize what already works well. I am not all that computer literate.
