Do I have to be on wifi to download iOS 5.1?

I understand that irOS 5.1 is available for the iPad 2. But when i look at software update in settings it only shows 5.0.1. Do I have t be connected to a wifi network to see and install 5.1? Or can I get it through iTunes? Seems odd because I can see iOS 5.1 as an OTA update on my iPhone 4S.

You can install the update within iTunes on your computer but you probably only see iOS 5.0.1 in the iPad settings because you have not installed that update yet. Could that be the case? I'm not sure if that's how it works anyway, but is your iPad running iOS 5.0.1.
Check in Settings>General>About>Version.
BTW - you can't use 3G to install the update - the file is way to big - it exceeds the limit - but WiFi is fine.

I used an old sim card to try to activate my iphone 3gs, it didnt work, and it gave me this response:

If this is on the actual download from itunes then this is an issue with your ISP.
If this is on installing the IOS to your phone (after extracting file), then it could be a security software issue.

Try a reset:
Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo.

Okay- I tried this again and I have WiFi *AND* I have the WiFi icon showing- all Internet dependent Apps seem to work now.
Settings- Control Center- disable the Access on Lock Screen and exit Settings. Power off iPhone. Wait a minute a restart.

Well, I went back in and removed it again, but I also went into Settings- Control Center- and deactivated "Access on Lock Screen": held power button down to shut phone off and then restarted. I now have WiFi: again with no WiFi symbol in upper left corner. In Settings Wi-Fi shows 'Off' but touching the WiFi button opens Wi-Fi settings and in there it's on and showing my homenetwork joined. I'm receiving email, opened Safari and able to connect- ****. It just went down again. Hmmmm. I opened settings went to wifi and it joined my network again. Safari works. Tried Check, my financial app- and it's searching :(
This is buggier than a campground in Maine in July!!!!

IPhone 5S won't connect to wifi after downloading iOS 7.0.1

I bought the iPhone 5S this morning and restored from the previous backup of iOS 7. Everything went fine after it almost immediately asks you to log into a wifi network, I typed in the password. As one would naturally expect, I had no issues. Then I downloaded and install the new 7.0.1 iOS. Went through the setup and when the prompt to log into the same network popped up, I typed in the same password but this time I get an "Incorrect Password" for my network. I'm literally copy/pasting it and typing it in slowly but no success.
VERY annoying considering I JUST bought this product...

I have an iPhone 5 with iOS 7 update. Same issue. I had no issues previously with iOS 6. So far I've only NOT been able to connect to my home router.....until about 10 minutes ago. I selected my SSID and chose the option to FORGET the network, restarted my router by unplugging the power supply, let sit for 30 seconds, then re powered it. Went into my iPhone settings, turned wifi OFF, then turned Bluetooth OFF. Turned wifi back ON and kept Bluetooth OFF (though there should be no direct correlation) and the router SSID appeared, so I tried my KEY again (WPA2 encryption) and it finally connected. I would also recommend turning all wifi sync services off just in case, they aren't doing any good without wifi anyway. I really hope this helps. I'm going to update my iPad mini today and see if the same issue comes up and apply the same steps mentioned. Good luck, even if this doesn't help, I'm sure someone (if not Apple) will help resolve the issue.

I have an Ipad 2, I recently downloaded IOS 7.0.4, now when I open up Safari to search the internet it will come up for a split second then dissapear and take me back to the home screen. So it wont even let me search for anything.

So can anyone tell me how to fix this problem? I cant surf the web because as soon as I click on the Safari icon it will pop up for a split second then dissapear and take me to the Ipad homescreen. This happened when I downloaded the IOS 7.0.4. I have the IPAD 2.

I didn't have a password lock on my iPhone 5 when I upgraded to iOS 7. Now when I swipe in, it gives me the password screen and I can't get by it.

try resetting your phone by turning it off and back on again. Also, the server may still be slammed from all the activity, so it may take a little with to connect.

If Join was on then your home wi-fi must be set to Non-Broadcast. If you did not set this up (maybe your provider did) then you will need to find the Network Name they used, and any password they used. The SSID is Security Set ID and to see more try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSID . Basically it is the name used to identify your router/network. A lot of times the installer will leave it set as LinkSys, or Broadcom or whatever the manufacturer set it as for default. Your best bet is to get whoever installed it to walk you through how they set it up, giving you id's and passwords so you can get in. HOWEVER, if you are not comfortable with this (if you set security wrong, etc.) you would be well ahead of the game to hire a local computer tech (networking) to get this working for you. You can also contact the vendor of your router and get help (if it is still in warranty), or at least get copies of the manuals as pdf files. Sorry I can't give you more help, I hope this gives you an idea where to go from here to find more.

How to connect a wireless drive and stream to my stereo through MacBook. I currently have a non apple WiFi network

I currently have a PC based WiFi network and am about to buy a MacBook Pro. I have 250 gb iTunes library and 100+ gb of photos. What I was going to get is the 120gb MacBook and run an external drive to store the iTunes library and photos. For intensive photographic work I'd directly connect the drive but day to day I'd connect it to the wireless network. What I want to do is to stream my music, from the wireless drive to my stereo
Will the drive work this way on my existing router - usb2 connected? Or do I need an apple device. Should I use an airport or Apple TV to connect to the stereo?

Hard to say when you don't give us a clue what you current router is??
USB2 is slow.. it is double slow from a network device.. and even slower if that network device doesn't actually have too much CPU power or RAM..
Even worse is the idea to move the disk from the network to the local external port.. because then format comes into play.. Apple devices can use FAT32.. yuk.. but really want HFS+.. most routers cannot talk HFS+ except apple ones.. they want NTFS or FAT32.. You can see where this is going.. buy two disks.. one for library.. one for a scratch disk .. usb3 will be great.. or thunderbolt even better. And when finished copy your project to the network drive..
Think carefully about backups.. they are important too.. might be time to invest in a real NAS. Not toy systems with USB.. dangling off them.
