If your computer is supported then you will need to update to Snow Leopard 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 and then use the App Store to download Lion.
Mac OS X Lion System Requirements
In order to install Mac OS X 10.7 you will need:
Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of RAM
Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later with the Mac App Store installed
At least 4GB of additional disk space to accommodate the download, but more is obviously recommended
Good Luck

Check first if your Mac might be compatable.

Need to know your Mac model. If it's a PowerPC, the max OS is Leopard 10.5.x. If it's an Intel procesor, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (for $29) & later to Lion.

i am running snow leopard, do i have to buy lion first before i can download lion server?

Snow Leopard client or Snow Leopard Server ?

I have a iMac and a MacBook. Do I have to buy Lion twice?

I believe so. The download is really an install app and never goes to the download older. It executes immediately.   This means here is nothing to move to another computer.

  • Have to buy Lion twice?

So i bought Lion and its downloading on my usual mac. then went to my server and tried to purchase lion server. i was told i had to buy lion and lion server both for $79. both computers use the same store account. so why do i have to buy lion twice?

But you dont have to buy it twice. See the EULA for downloads from the App Store.

  • Do i have to buy lion again for other macs

do i have to buy lion again for my other macs?

Just sign on to the App Store using the same AppleID and look at the Purchased tab.  You can download and install from there on the other Macs.
You can avoid multiple downloads by copying the Install OSx Lion app to an external drive.  This must be done before the install process completes because it's deleted from the apps directory as the last step.  You can then use that for your other Macs without another 4 Gig download.

  • Why I have to buy Lion Server and Lion for $83.98???

I want to upgrade my MAC OS X Server 10.6.8 to Lion Server......
But the App store insists I buy Lion as well... AND it has tried to charge me $83.98 for it.... (The Australian dollar is closely on parity with US dollar)..
So.. I already downloaded Lion.... and installed on my imac.... now I want to upgrade my server.. why do I have to buy lion again??? And why so expensive compared to the rest of the world??

For those that don't see the prompt to buy Lion + Lion Server again, there's no need to respond because you aren't having this issue and any obvious input, is just that.. obvious.
For those with this issue, Apple Care won't be able help you because it's a download issue and not an install issue and they suggested to contact the Mac App Store (iTunes Store) support for assistance.   Sadly it's e-mail only and probably will take some time.  You could try a clean install of SLS to upgrade to LS, but that still might not work. Other than attempting the pain of wasting a day to do a fresh install before the upgrade, I've tried logging out and back in with the Mac Store, created a second admin account and used the same AppleID and both still prompted me to Buy Lion+Lion server again.
For those that haven't clicked on the buy, I still hit an issue that preventing me from downloading the Lion Server after the 4GB Lion image downloaded.  You will probably have to request the refund if you attempted this, but guessing you still won't be able to install.   Also if you try to upgrade from SLS to just Lion, you will be prompted to buy Lion Server as well.   So in the end, it's up to the Mac App Store e-mail to resolve this or perhaps I can attempt to do the clean install.

  • Do i have to buy Lion for my other macs? (Have them as preinstalled in a new mac)

    Hello everyone
I recently bought an iMac running Mac OS X Lion. I also have a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard (10.6.8).
I know that if you buy Lion from App Store you can install it on all your computers that you personally use.
I guess that is not the case when you buy a machine with Lion preinstalled. In order to upgrade my MBP, i have to buy Lion right?
I logged in from MBP in the App Store and Lion is not listed in my purchases (My MBP is eligible for upgrade).
    Thanks for any help
    Dimitris

    Thanks for the clarification Allan.
This is quite ridiculous in my opinion as compared to the price of the mac, the price of Lion is nothing... But anyway..

  • I purchased an imac in November, complete with Lion. now it says i have to buy Lion again.

I purchased an imac in November, complete with Lion. now it says i have to buy Lion again. It was a refurbed mac, is OSX registered to someone else. Why has my apple i.d forgot ive purchased lion?

Your post was pretty unclear, but if you are CERTAIN that you purchased Lion off the App Store, and cannot see the option to re-download it, see this article: Unhiding Purchases in Mac App Store
If you purchased the iMac in November without buying Lion, and cannot seem to boot into the recovery partition (if Command-R doesnt work, try just "Option" as well), then go back to an Apple Store and ask them to reinstall Lion. They will be aware that your machine came with it if if you bought it in November.

  • I just bought my mac with 10.6, do I have to buy Lion?

Just bought my mac two weeks ago, preloaded with 10.6. Do I still have to buy OS 10.7, or is there a way to download for free. Had I been able to wait, I would have, but I am leaving the country soon and wasn't sure the release date on Lion.

No. You can get Lion for free under Apple's Mac OS X up to date program. Go to the appropriate web page for your country.
In the USA go to http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/
    In Canada - http://www.apple.com/ca/macosx/uptodate/
    The UK - http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/uptodate/
etcetera. Substitute the appropriate country code and it should take you to the right place. Follow the directions on the page.
    Best of luck.

  • Will I still have to buy Lion?

If I purchase a MacBook Pro after Mac OS X Lion comes out, will I still have to download it from the App Store or will it come preinstalled? Also, does the MacBook Pro already have Mac OS X Snow Leopard installed?

Depends on when after Lion is released and where the Mac is purchased. If purchased at an official retailer from available inventory that shipped with Snow Leopard installed, you should not have to purchase Lion since the Mac was purchased after Lion was released. At some point after Lion is released, all new Macs will ship with Lion pre-installed but there will certainly be some inventory of new Macs available at Apple stores and at official retailers that shipped with Snow Leopard pre-installed after Lion is released. I would prefer getting a Mac with Snow Leopard pre-installed. If you purchase a new Mac with Lion pre-installed but you prefer Snow Leopard, you won't be able to install Snow Leopard. If you purchase a new Mac with Snow Leopard pre-installed, you have the option to install Lion. After Lion is installed on such a Mac, you have the option to revert back to Snow Leopard if wanted or needed.

  • I have two macs ( macbook and Imac) do i have to buy Lion twice if I want to update  both computers?

    Hi there,
I was just thinking about updating my comuputers 9 macbook pro and Imac) to OS X Lion but am unsure whether I have to buy it twice.

No, when you download it, save the installer in the Applications folder before you install it.
You can also re-download it from AppStore

  • It´s impossible to open PS6. In any case there ist the questtion to ID Number. when i follow this path i have to buy the Version of Cloud Version of PS6!!!????

Since 4 days this mysterie happend with my PS6 and Adobe cannot help. Its an impossible situation.

First sign in with your Adobe ID and Password. You do not have to buy anything, and you are not signing up for creative cloud.
You will then be asked to "license this product" or you will be asked for a serial number directly.
Select "I have a serial number", and enter your serial number.
Photoshop CS6 should then be licensed and working.

  • Verizon sets up the customer to have to buy more or get charged for overage

Not only that, but there is an arbitration agreement that prevents any class  action lawsuits.  This issue has been occurring since I added my son's I-phone onto the package.  With 2 flip phones, we never went over let alone used much data.  However, just turning the Iphone on must use a ton of data and/or updates seem to use data as well.  I initially only used about .5GB then with an Iphone, I used .75.  2GB was fine for awhile.  Then I had to put a limit on my son's usage and cut him off.  It didn't seem to matter. We have connected (when we can) to our Xfinity wireless, but we have had issues with that as well. We increased to 4GB this month and somehow we are over by .56 and counting.
In the numerous calls I've made, has provided methods of how to save data usage.  I had to discover this one on my own.  Even when I turned off the phone at night, turned off the cellular data, used the manual application for using cellular data on apps, put a limit on my son's data package (which amazingly seemed to be ignored by Verizon this month), logged into wireless anywhere I could, we still went over.  It seems the cellular data is still used regardless.
If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.  I am going to file a BBB complaint.

Data charges are scary when it seems impossible to manage! We can convert impossible to nothing by using data usage manager apps that are available both for the google play store and the app store. They give a breakdown of what apps are using how much data. The current available OS also has useful options in Settings. Simply touch "Cellular" and you can scroll down and disable cellular data for specific things. Another very useful tool is our data calculator: http://vz.to/1bdqvUW
We want the data to be managable for our customers so they can enjoy our amazing network. We want all our customers to love us and want to stay with us! Check out the countless reasons to choose Verizon Wireless: http://vz.to/13N0B6O  .
