When you shut down operating systems like MS Windows or Mac OS, they automatically close your active applications before shutting down, is this true for iOS 7?

BUT your answers revealed an explicit controversy about background apps ... close them to save power and performance OR don't bother to close them as they are idle or inactive!

I need a calendar for my iPhone 4s which shows 'every 4th Saturday'or 'every 2nd Tuesday', etc., which unlike the Android caledar, the Apple one doesn't have. I've looked at others on the App Store, none of which appear to have this particular ability. Any ideas?
You can do this in iCloud calendars, actually. You just can't do it directly on the device. But, if you go to icloud.com & edit the calendar event, you can select "Custom" from the dropdown for Repeat & it will let you put in "every 4 wks on saturday" or even "every 28 days." But, again, you'd have to be using iCloud & you can only do this on the website.

my wife changed start up somehow. Now 7 or 8 files open when restart. Have to close all to do anything. files, applications, internet, folders etc. How do adjust setting so that it open do normal screen with icons etc? before this, it started up and went to main screen with dock, save folders ICOns etc

You don't. The only place to obtain apps for any iPhone is the app store. However, most, if not all of those apps won't run/install on an iPhone 3G. iOS 4.2.1 is the end of the line for your phone & most developers no longer support it.

I lost all my contacts on my iPhone. Facebook contacts integration is turned off. When I got to know that I have no contacts on my iPhone. I checked my settings and iCloud backup and contacts on iCloud (in settings) were off.

Your son needs his own Apple ID for iCloud, FaceTime & iMessage. He can continue to use yours for iTunes content, but for everything else, he needs his own.
When you did what you did, as far as iCloud knows, this is the same person with multiple devices, and that's they way things are supposed to work: keep everything in sync. -

If you turned it off in the process of doing a full restore, yes. If you turned it off in the process of restoring it from an iCloud backup, it depends. You may be able to turn it on and resume the restore; otherwise you'll have to restore from the backup again.

I can't search for apps by pulling down on the home screen. Today view in Notification Center is turned off, but today view comes up when I pull down, not Spotlight Search.
Pull down starting in the middle of the home page, not at the top.

I paused the movie download but did not turn off my IPad. When I returned to complete the download, the "waiting" message has been on the screen for over an hour. How can I complete the download?
I recommend purchasing lion on a USB drive at Apple Store. This will avoid all of the downloading hassles.
Also, be sure you clone your hard drive first. A lot of people want to go back to Snow Leopard and if you choose to do this cloning will make the process very easy. -
Does anyone know what would cause me to start hearing a talk program of some type after hitting the play button after it had been on pause. Hitting the pause button shuts off the talking, but hitting the play button starts it up again. The strange thing is that the talking continues even after I turn off my iPad. The talk program was about silly or trendy news items, not regular news. It sounds like it could be a talk-radio program, but there were no call letters or information on where it was coming from or who was talking. The person doing all the talking is a male and sounds like he could be in his 20's. The only way I could turn it off was to hit the pause button and then turn off my iPad. I just got my iPad last week and had not had any problems with it until this happened. At the time this happened I was playing a version of Angry Birds that kept being interrupted by t-mobile commercials from time to time, which I had never experienced before. either.
Well, shut my mouth! There was a similar question over to the right about a 6th generation nano repeating over and over again -- I read the answer to that one, followed the instructions, and holy crap, it's back to normal.
Is there a name for this when you end up replying to your own aggravating question? That's what I did. Now I can go out and listen. It's only 91 degrees. Heaven. Thanks, Apple.
