Do I have to erase my HD when re-installing Classic 9?
This is going to be a little long, so I apologize for that, but I figure more information will help the experts in the world of Mac to help me.
my Mac : iBook 500 MHZ power PC G3
Version loaded: OS X 10.2.1
Original (and also my discs): OS X 10.0.3
I borrowed a Mac and my brother accidentally dropped the classic system folder that was on the desktop in the trash. Well I took it out of the trash a couple of days later but since then I have never been able to use any classic application. The little classic icon blinks and it says that no classic system is available. It doesn't appear either in my system preferences/classic.
I still have the system folder which contains classic 9 on the desktop (however it does not have the 9 printed on the folder of a functioning 9 system folder), and when I click on the classic icon contained in the folder it tells me it is in use by OS 10. However that doesn't allow me to use classic related programs.
I since loaded on OS X version 10.2 hoping to use their discs to do a one time installation of classic 9, but the discs wouldn't work in my computer (too old I guess).
I would rather not erase my hard drive, as indicated by the multiple disc installation of OS 9, but I am coming to the conclusion that it is the only option. To further complicate matters my HD is not partitioned so I can't load
classic on another drive.
Is there a way to get classic back on my system without erasing everything?

I checked the article and it sent me to a couple
of places. The one I found most pertinent was one
that referenced my need for both System and Finder
to be present in the System folder, neither of them
are in my case. I am pretty sure that I have to go
through with the Multi disc restoration process,
because just dumping Finder and System in the folder
from my CD restoration disks, certainly doesn't work.
I was just hoping that there was a way to get classic
9 loaded back on my computer without having to go
through the whole restoration process and therefore
deleting my HD.

My late 2009 27" iMac gets stuck on the grey Apple logo when booting up. It boots correctly when in safe mode. I have tried erasing the HD and re-installing from a USB installer. It says the install is complete, but after restarting it gets stuck on the Apple logo again. This could possibly be an HD failure, but then why does Safe Mode still work and the USB install not work? 1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

It includes Lightroom and several other piece of software. Lightroom 5 will not install. I was successful at downloading and installing Photoshop CC and Bridge CC. As I said Lightroom did not install. The Adobe Applications Manager shows "Installation Failed". I did retry and got the same error. The error is

I am running a Mac. The OS is Snow Leopard. Is there any other information that I can provide that might help? In about May of 2011 I changed from Windows to Mac. At that time Adobe provided me with a trial copy of Lightroom which I installed and did not really ever use.

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Why can I not have the address bar appear when I installed Firefox 3.6?
Your "pictures" appeared and I had to choose one in order to continue. It would not clear unless I chose one. From then on, I could have no address bar, just Google, Yahoo, and in very dark bqckground which was hard to see. I tried everything; and finally gave up and deleted my Firefox. I have been a user for several years, but this one messed everything up. I could not get my addresses from the Express, and if I am going to have to use Outlook for the address book, I might as well just use Explorer! Give me some help (I have tried filling in the questions) and I will reinstall Firefox, I did like it a lot.

If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

As i told i have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit version. I install java and have problems with Java Deployment Toolkit and Java(TM) Platform SE. It won't show in add-on. I cant watch movies. When I play movie it says java is missing but when I use IE I can watch some movies. I try reinstaling Java and even reinstall Windows. But problem was still there. I run java check (from Firefox) to see if java is installed and it confrmed. I even try diferent versions of Java and Mozilla. I even use JDK and JRE. I install java for 64bit and mozilla is also for 64bit version of system.
I have another laptop with 32 bit version and everything works great. Installation procedure was same (only used 32bit versions of softwares).
When I go to control panel and java options (windows 64bit) enable java content in your browser is marked. But in advanced tab default java for browser (mozilla family) is unmarked. And when I mark box and leave (apply then ok) and return box is empty. It wont confirm. In 32bit version of laptop i have alsou java plugin but in 64 bit it is not there. Here is a picture what I was talking about. This is on windows 32 bit for 64bit is some just box for mozilla family is empty and under that java plugin do not exist.

hope someone have solution!!you don't have to reinstall firefox or java, you can just download and install the 32bit-java next to your currently installed java version. it should then be picked up by firefox and be displayed under firefox > addons > plugins...

I have a windows 7 & when I install iTunes all the icons on my desktop turn into iTunes icon & any icon I click on opens the iTunes app
First I'd set up a System Restore point. Then try applying the LNK registry fix from the following document:

How do you install "Classic Mode"? The online guide doesn't match what I have?
HI -- I have a MacBook Pro and need to install Classic Mode so my kids can play some of their games ... I looked online, got instructions to go to the disks that came with my computer and that Classic Mode would be there. But it isn't. What am I missing???
There might be a terminology issue here.
Classic is the ability to run OS 9 programs on PPC-based OSX computers. It would not have been included with a MacBook Pro which runs an Intel processor.
Rosetta allows an Intel-based computer to run PPC based *OSX* programs. It will not allow you to run programs that required OS9. This *is* included with your MacBook Pro.
Are these OS9 (or below) games or PPC games for OSX? -
I have accidentally erased my iPhone 3 Contacts when I toggled to OFF and thught the data was saved in iCloud. The contacts are already duplicated on my iPad2, and if I could send them to my iPhone3, then I could reclaim them all.
If you turned contact sync off, you'll have to turn it back on to sync it back to the phone.
It's extremely unclear what you did where.
Do the contacts still exist in iCloud? -
i boot my macbook air usinf comand + R to make a fresh os instalation so i erase my hd. when i finish ereasing i try to reinstal it but i have error in verifiation

why does it tell me my ipad is synched with another itunes library and wants to erase the thing when I want to synch it? I haven't synched it with any other mac but my own.

I know from experience that this must be a frustrating situation for you especially if you don't want to loose the music/video content that is currently on your ipod. Unfortunately though you may have to consider re-syncing it as it thinks its currently synced with another computer.
If you bought any music that is on the ipod through itunes you can opt to right click the ipod in itunes and 'transfer purchases' if you authorise your library in the 'Store' menu in itunes. Some reasons for this happening may include some of the following:
Deleting and reinstalling your itunes on the computer.
Removing the account you had on the computer you used itunes in and making a new one. (User account, eg: Lisa).
Changing computers in the past.
A friend or family member syncing it on their computer to give you there music.
A sign of a failing iPod.
Alternatively you can opt to not sync it and keep the music that is on your ipod there but this means you will never be able to update your ipod.

I recently purchased a new windows laptop because i needed a new one. My old laptop ive had for quiet awhile and i've had it for like 7 years. Anyways, i have a iphone 3GS and itouch 4 generation. I installed itunes onto my new HP laptop and i connected my itouch first to transfer my purhcases. But i thought after authorizing the itunes would make it to where i didnt have to erase it when i hook it up to the new computer. Friends and family memebers of mine have itunes and apple devices too and they mentioned that they didn't have to erase either their ipod, iphone, or ipad when they hook up to a different computer. MIne however, says " this ipod/iphone can only be synced with one computer at a time" and it gives me the options to : cancel, erase and sync, and transfer purchases. Now i already transferred my music and most of my apps onto my new laptop. BUT, im worried about my iphone losing all of its contacts. If anyone can help me mess with the sync settings to where i can back up my ipod and iphone data onto my new laptop that would be great!
P.S. I did manage to TRANSFER all of my apps and music. I am worried about my CONTACTS and PHOTOS disappearing after it erases and puts whatever back on. i just need helping finding a way to get all of my stuff not to erase. And my ipod and iphone DO SYNC to the new computer but DO NOT BACK UP to the new one.

How can I use my home Mac and my MacBook's iTunes and not have to erase...
I have a desktop Mac and a Macbook. Obviously I have iTunes on both. Both are the same account. But no matter what, when I connect to either one, in order to add music, videos or ANYTHING I have to erase and start all over! I hate this soooooooo much. Is there a way around it? I just upgraded to the new mobile me calendar and now all my calendar entries on iCal have been erased. As I type this the calendar entries are still on the mobile me and iphone calendars. How do I restore the calendar entries to iCal?
Please always post your System details when you have a query. The upgrade to the new MobileMe calendar produces different results, and different problems, with different versions of OSX.
Snow Leopard: during the upgrade process your iCal calendars should be moved to MobileMe (this can take some time and you have to wait for it to happen). Once done, your iCal reads the calendars from MobileMe so any changes made in either place will be visible immediately. If this has not happened then this Apple Tech Note provides instructions:

Leopard: when the upgrade is completed iCal on Leopard will not be able to see the MobileMe calendars until an additional process is carried out, detailed in this Apple Tech Note:
