Do i have to hardwire connect the Time Capsule to my router?
do i have to hardwire connect the Time Capsule to my router?
My plan was to just add it to my wireless network and keep it for security away from my mac and in a completely different part of the house.
You can but it is a NOT recommended method.. it will be slow and unreliable.

you must have connected the Time Capsule with a router that does not work with my direct cable from my ISP
I tried to answer in your other post.. please stick to one thread ..
What method of internet do you have.. is this fibre install.. if so the TC should just plug in and use dhcp in router mode.. press and hold the reset and it will go back to router mode by default. -
HT1178 can i connect the time capsule to a router?
i am having problems setting up the time capsule for the first time. it works when i connect the time capsule to my mac via ethernet cable. however, i am trying to have it connect to my mac wirelessly. so i pluget it into my router through the wan port, but it flashes yellow.
Flashing amber can mean anything .. it is just an error which you need to find in the airport utility the exact description.
But I recommend reconnect by ethernet first.
Setup wireless again.. this time use new name.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. TC24ghz for example.. and different name for 5ghz.. TC5ghz works.
Lock the wireless channels used particularly for 2.4ghz.. choose out of 1, 6, 11.
Setup WPA2 Personal security with 8-12 character passkey.. pure alphanumeric.
Update the TC, and disconnect the ethernet.. but do not move it yet.. with the Mac close by try to connect to the wireless.. if it still fails.. something is wrong in the hardware on one side or the other.
If you get wireless working, determine if the router or modem you plug into is going to be the main router.. in which case bridge the TC. Or if the TC will be the main router.. setup the TC to connect by dhcp or pppoe depending on the broadband type. -
Can I hard wire connect the time capsule to my iMac
I have been told to not use wireless connections when iPhoto library is on external disc. Can I hard wire connect the time capsule external drive. I have found nothing showing or telling me exactly yes or no.
how various devices on the network are connected is of no difference
ethernet wired or wifi == no difference -
I just purchased a 3TB Time Capsule. I live in Italy and have 220V power. The Time Capsule is rated for that, but the cord says 125V. Can I use this cord with an adapter, or do I need to buy a new cord at an Italian store?
Due to the kind of plug used the US power cord is rated at the 125v value.. and legally we cannot advise you to use on higher voltages.. although I have never had issues in Australia.. 240v.
But adapters from your Euro power plug to US are generally ugly .. unsightly things.. and often sit high above the socket and are none too stable.. I agree with Bob.. just go out and buy a standard figure 8 power cord.. check with Apple in Italy for a white one.. if you are going to have it on show.. black are far more common. Or even check ebay for a standard power Apple power cord as a number of items they sell use the figure8 socket. -
Can i connect my time capsule with my router as a bridge ?
can i connect my time capsule with my router as a bridge ?
I am a bit lost .. did you work this out?? You are running a second thread.. and answered it with this question.
The TC can be bridged.. plug it into the main router by ethernet and run it in bridge mode.. that is router bridge.
Do you mean wireless bridge??
If you mean wireless bridge the answer is maybe but unlikely.
If you setup the TC to join a wireless network.. it becomes a dumb client not a bridge.
So to get it to wireless bridge you need to use another apple router.. that is the only way to get them to work.
If you want specifics ask specific questions. -
Is it better to connect my Time Capsule up to my existing wireless network or use the Airport Time Capsule as the base unit and start over again by creating a new network?
There is no end of answers to this..
But if you want AC wireless.. assuming you bought a new TC.. and the Extreme is the older N model.. then simply make sure the TC is as close as possible to where wireless AC client will be used.. and connect it back to the main router whichever that is, by ethernet.
If both are AC then it will make no difference.
As long as you can connect them both by ethernet and not use wireless extend.. it won't make much difference.
The worst case is where you use wireless extend and expect high speed but totally lose it because of your bridge link.. if that is the case you wasted your money and you can return the TC and buy a hard disk and plug it into the AE. -
the time capsule is giving flashed amber light and i cant connect it to my mac book pro. i want to use it with the time machine to make backup for my mac. please advice me.
To do the setup, plug it in via ethernet.. do not try to setup over wireless.. Once it is setup you can plug the TC into the network and use wireless.
Most likely you will use the TC in bridge to an existing modem router.. but we cannot help as you have no details of the network setup.
I do recommend in the setup of the TC you use SMB type names.. that means, short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. as later Mac OS do have issues with long names, spaces and that apple shocker, the apostrophe. -
Connecting the time capsule to a wireless network (university)
I just purchased my first mac computer, and the time capsule. I am a university student, and my housing has wireless network, so i would need to configure it to that network (which requires registration). When I first opened everything up, I could see the time capsule in the airport utility, but now I cannot. I dont really know where to go from here, because all of the manuals go from being able to detect the time capsule. On top of that how do I connect the wireless to the registration required network? Any help is much appreciated.
how can I use the time capsule as a "wifi acceptor" to connect with my wireless network, and then boardcasting wifi signal to my devices?
Unfortunately, this is not possible.
In order to broadcast a wireless network with Internet access, the Time Capsule must be provided with a wired Ethernet connection at its WAN "O" port.
Check wtih your Internet Service Provider to see if they have an adapter or other device that will provide a wired Ethernet connection to the Time Capsule. -
Connecting two time capsules on one router
I have 2 TCs, TC1 will be used upstairs, TC2 downstairs. Both connected by cable to Netgear router. TCs will have different names. Can I set up each independently, do I need to bridge one? Any problems with possible interference? The single strength from TC1 can be seen downstairs but starts to fade quickly as my wife moves her laptop around house.
1). Would my solution be to follow the Airport Utility set up instructions to 'add to network' the new device?
When you first power up the new device and open AirPort Utility, choose the new device and select the "join" option, then you will be given an option to "extend" the wireless network in a later step during the configuration.
2). Could I then run my iTunes library from either the new Extreme's external HD, or the new TC's connected external HD?
Yes, you could move the iTunes library to the new drive and then "point" the iTunes application to the new location. I assume that you already have a backup of the library, correct?
If you are planning to use Time Machine to backup your Macs, keep in mind that Time Machine backups to a drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme are not supported, so the Time Capsule would be the recommended device if you plan to use Time Machine.
Also keep in mind that if you move the iTunes library to the Time Capsule, Time Machine will not be able to backup the library since it is already on the Time Capsule. -
I have the Time Capsule and a very old router. I am assuming that I have to have a router, what should I get for a new router? Can the Time Capsule be its own router?
The Time Capsule is a wireless router, but it does not have a modem on board, so you will need a modem to be able to connect to the Internet.
The "best" modem to use is probably one that your Internet Service Provider supplies, since you know that it will be supported in the event of difficulties. Often, an ISP will give you a modem free of charge with a commitment for a year or more of Internet service. -
I've read where there are issues with the Nest and Airport Extreme (AE)? Is AE used in the Time Capsule?
If so, i already have a wi-fi router, so can the Time Capsule simply be used for wireless backup instead of as a router if there is conflict?A TC is fundamentally a AE with a sata chip included to drive the hard disk. Some slightly different bios to include disk functions, although most of those are also on the AE. So as a router it is 99.999% identical.
And yes, if you have another router you can easily bridge the TC and use wireless for backups and internet connection. Once you no longer route through the TC the issues with most NAT problems including port forwarding should disappear.. mostly this is due to all apple routers using NAT-PMP instead of upnp which is the near universal standard for opening ports.. without upnp apple keep their routers more exclusive. -

I want to connect my iMac to my Time Capsule using Ethernet. I have them connected via an Ethernet cable, but only WiFi seems to be working. How can I specify the Ethernet connection instead of WiFi? Thanks
WelkedGo to preferences, network and see if ethernet is indicated. Be sure it shows a green dot. Also be sure it is at the top of the list (above WiFi). If not click on the the wheel at the bottom and set service order.

Can I connect the time capsule to my existing iMac wirelessly?
I've just bought the airport time capsule. can I connect to my my existing wifi netwiork without an ehternet cable?
You can but it works really poorly and it is not supported by apple.
Plug the TC by ethernet into your main router and you can turn off the wireless if you like.
The exception is if your existing network is running apple router/s then you can use the TC as extend.
