Do I have to have 30 meg to copy 30 meg on my computor

Hello anyone out there?
I am an old lady of 42 and completely computer iliterate!!
I am having trouble with my ipod 30meg which my children gave me for my birthday.
I filled my computor with about 1/3 of my music collection, downloading each one to my harddrive and then converting to MP3 (using another program) 1250 songs all ready to download. Took ages.
I then loaded them onto my ipod. No trouble.
To make space for the next lot I had to delete the old songs off, as I only have 10meg of free space on my laptop.
I then loaded another lot (Ages) and plugged in my ipod.
It then promptly deleted the first 1250 songs (Aggggghhhhh)
and loaded on the others.
I know that you can have other computors in the loop and download from them, but does that mean you lose whatever you had previously loaded from another computor???????
Qustion - Do I have to have 30meg of free space on my computor with all my songs on to download 30 meg onto my ipod, or can I ADD extra songs or whatever without having the old ones on my hard drive.
Please help I must have it or am doing it WRONG.

With your iPod connected in iTunes Preferences iPod select to manually manage playlists: This will prevent iTunes from deleting music off your iPod that is not in your iTunes "Library".
What has happened recently is due to the fact that your Pod preferences are set to automatically update playlists - this auto-feature will delete all tracks from your iPod that are not part of your Library.
You should take into consideration to buy an external harddisk for storing your music.
