Do I have to have AirPort Express to transmit AirTunes?

My PC is connected via Ethernet (wired) to a Wireless B/Wired Ethernet router. Can I still transmit AirTunes?
Thanks,
Amit Ron

I think your question is then, can it work with your
Belkin router. As long as you realise that with a
Wireless B router will be painfully slow. If you
could at all possibly connect the AirPort Express to
the Belkin by Ethernet (totally by-passing Wireless),
then do it, everything will be 10x quicker and 10x
more reliable.
This is an interesting comment. I believe I have seen other people express the idea that using Wireless B isn't as good. However, in my experience, that doesn't hold true. The wireless network I hook up to is useable by both B & G and it is totally G when only G clients are using the network. My work laptop is G but my music laptop is B. I use the B laptop to broadcast AirTunes and it works just fine.
Now, I'm not an expert in networking, but I believe how it transmits AirTunes is like this: B laptop -> Netgear Wireless router (this is directly hooked up to DSL) -> Airport Express. This is quite a distance because from B laptop to Wireless Router the signal needs to go upstairs and towards the east, then back down again back to my room where the Airport Express is. That is, unless B laptop transmits directly to Airport Express which I'm thinking isn't the case because my Airport Express is acting as a client.

Not necessarily. You could use the "Create Network" feature of your MBP's built-in AirPort card to provide an Ad-hoc wireless network for local wireless-capable computers to connect to.

If both your MacBook Pro and iPod are unable to "see" the Wi-Fi network provided by the AirPort Express, it is most likely NOT that you are missing an "airport card," but the Express may be the issue instead.
One quick test is to see if either device can "see" other Wi-Fi networks. If they can, then you can definately rule both of them out as the issue.
By default, the AirPort Express will broadcast an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. Can either device see this network? If not, then I would recommend that you perform a "factory default" reset on the Express, and then, check again.

  • Hello, I have Airport Express connected through my PC which runs XP. After 2 hours of playing my iTunes library Airport just quits for no apparent reason. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution. I have log out to restart iTunes. Thanks Murray

Hello, I have Airport Express installed on my PC which runs XP. When I play my library through iTunes after about 2 hours Airport quits and I have to log out and restart my computer - very frustrating. Don't know if it is overheating but if anyone can make any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Maybe Mail's message index is corrupt. The following procedure is safe to try. Its only deleterious effect is that windows you left open in Mail at step 1 won't reopen automatically in step 4.
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Browse to ~/Library/Mail.
    3. Move "Envelope Index" to your desktop.
    4. Launch Mail.
Mail will rebuild its index before it opens any windows. It may take a few minutes to rebuild. Be patient!
The new index is likely to be a different size than the old one, usually smaller.
Only the Message Viewer window will open--not any other windows you may have left open when Mail quit.
Be sure your mail folders are there and have their messages. They always are there, but the prudent check anyway.
Be sure you can send and receive mail. This always works, too.
After you have done the above, trash the old Envelope Index that you saved on your desktop. It is never better than the new one, and as time goes on, it becomes more and more out of synch with your mail folders, so you won't want to put it back in Library.
If Mail doesn't crash for a week or two, you probably fixed the problem. If not, you at least freed up some disk space.
Let us all know whether and how you solved your problem.

  • Will there be a AirPort Express-base station,  AirTunes that handles Video?

Will there be a AirPort Express-basstation med AirTunes that handles Video?

Nobody here knows as this is a user to user support forum. Speculation about future or possible Apple products is not allowed.
One product which can handle video which is available now is Elgato's eyeHome.
    http://www.elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyehome
EyeHome allows you to access the digital content you have stored on your Mac - photos, music, video, movies - and enjoy it on your TV and home entertainment system. EyeHome features an easy-to-use and remote-controlled TV interface. From the main menu's list of "EyeTV" recorded television, "Movies", "Music", "Pictures" and "Web", you can simply access your library of digital content.
My eyeHome is connected to my Airport network via an Airport Express in WDS mode and it works really effectively.

  • I have AirPort Express 802.11n and ATT DSL Pro. The speed at the ATT modem is 4 Mbps however the speed at my computer, ipad, and ipod touch is only 1.7 Mbps. The ATT tech came out and said the slowdown is being caused by the AirPort router. Help!

I need help with the speed of AirPort Express and ATT DSL.

I just discovered this, and it seems to have solved issues with my Time Capsule.
Open AirPort Utility; select your AirPort Express and choose manual setup.
    Click >Wireless
    Change Radio Mode to 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g
    Click >Wireless Network Options
    Change Transmit Power to 50%
Check >Use interference robustness < This step is purely optional. It's worth a shot.
I've been noticing issues with performance of my Time Capsule for a while.
It really started with lack of good range, followed by lousy performance with my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. I was lucky to get 10% of what my speed really is (1.5 Mbps vs. 15.9 Mbps). My iMac was the only thing that seemed unaffected.
I attempted to setup a Sony Media Player (stay away from them- junk!) then a Roku XD in my bedroom only 20' down the hall from the Time Capsule (direct line of sight). Signal kept dropping and performance was lousy for both. I want another new Apple TV for the bedroom, but that TV doesn't have an HDMI port. I ended up running an ethernet cable down the hall... until this morning.
After some digging, I found a forum talking about WiFi performance for iPhones and stumbled upon something kinda basically unrelated, but gave me the idea to dig into AirPort Utility a bit deeper. Changing power to 50% didn't sound logical, but lowering output power was mentioned in the forum. AirPort Utility goes from 100% to 50% then lower. Nothing between 50% and 100%. I'll know more about range later today, but I have a feeling it may be mysteriously improved as well.
Hope it works out for you!

  • I have airport express to enable my wifi.  Will this also enable my iPad for printing?

I have an original iPad.  I also have airport extrere for enabling my wi- Fi.  Does this enable me to print using my iPad?

If your requirement is for printing at home and you have a Mac, just go to this site and download a great app that makes all your Mac's shared printers available to the iPad.

  • Airport express as an airtunes only device. Best setting?

Hello! Just wondering if there are any "best settings" for an airport express that is going to be used strictly for airtunes? I've no close neighbors or other electrical interference sources that are out of my control. I do have a wireless phone that I'll have to deal with(Higher or lower with it's frequency?), other than that I'm wondering if there are any settings to get the best performance? Distance is under 50', someday may try a longer distance for a special outside occasion(party) . For the most part though it's just the under 50' range. Whoops! I Almost forgot to mention the satelite TV and internet connection.
I hope someone can help. Thank You!

I believe the frequency is 2.4, I'll be getting another phone soon . Q1:Would changing the multicast rate from the default setting of 2 help optimize it for the airtunes only use of this device? Q2:Is there a preferred channel? I should explain a little more, my device doesn't seem to broadcast/recieve as well as I think it should and I'm trying to eliminate any possible problems. I'll be checking if my airport extreme card is well seated in the iMac after checking here for any suggestions, then it's to the shop with the airport express, if the problem isn't resolved. Maybe I should take the card in also for a check?
I've tried unpluging the wireless phone and it seems to help a little, but the signal strength seems to fluctuate more so. Any suggestions GREATLY appreciated .
    Thank You!

  • Using Airport Express solely for airtunes question

I am letting my neighbor try out my airport express for airtunes but I ran into a problem setting it up. Her Mac mini Intel 1.5GHz connects to the internet through ethernet from a DSL modem. I want to put the airport express in her family room connected to a stereo. I first tested it by setting up wireless internet and airtunes (ethernet and audio cables plugged into the airport) and I was able to stream music. Then when I plugged the ethernet cable back into the mini I was no longer able to stream music. iTunes would attempt to connect for about a minute but would fail. I was also confused about what settings to use in Airport Admin Utility. I tried "wireless disabled" but then I couldn't even see it in Airport Admin Utility and I had to reset it (what is the point of that setting?!). What do I do?

Wait a second. They can't do it at the same time?
You can stream music and get on the Internet at the same time if (a) the AX is connected directly to the Internet or (b) the AX joins a wireless network which is connected to the Internet.
Can Airport Extreme overcome this limitation?
If you connect an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to the DSL modem then you could (a) connect the Mac Mini via Ethernet to the AEBS and (b) have the AX join the wireless network created by the AEBS. Then the Mac Mini could see the Internet and stream music at the same time.

  • Airport Express. No airtunes when there is an internet connection.

    Hello guys,
Now I have my very own airport express problem. I will try to go into as much detail as possible.
I own Airport express for about a month. It worked fine. Moved to the new apparent recently.
I have HP Pavillion notebook. While without the internet in the new appartment i set up my AE to stream music to stereo in a bridge mode. It worked fine.
    Now my inet is on.
I connected AE to modem via ethernet cable, set it in a bridge mode. After a while i got the wireless internet connection on my PC. When the PC is connected to the internet i cannot connect to the AE or get the Airtunes working.
While reading the forums i've found out that i can change TCP/IP on PC to 164.192. and that will help me to connect to AE. I did, but at the same time the inet was gone.
Summary: i have a working wi-fi internet connection while AE is in the bridge mode connected via ethernet to the modem, but have no airtunes. If i set my PC's IP to 164.192. i can get airtunes but no internet. Need to get this together.
*The things i've tried already*: used AirPort Utility to set AE to "distribute IP", via DHCP. After that i rebooted my modem, AE and PC. PC and AE got IPs like 10.1.0. but no internet connection. Tech support of ISP said that it sees my PC, but PC has no IP on the net. While in this mode i also get the trouble connecting PC wirelessly to the AE and have to use hard reset to default settings for AE.
Much the same result i get when trying to "share one IP via DHCP".
Notes: PC's IP is set automatically. PC has internet connection via ethernet cable plugged directly into modem. Usual PC's IP is something like 77.122.
As far as i understand the problem is with IPs.
Please help me out. Thaks alot in advance.

    Ok, please try the following:
o Power-down the modem, AX, and computer(s). Order is not critical.
o While all of the network equipment is powered down, perform a "factory default" reset on the AX. When complete, power-down the AX.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up the AX; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    o Power-up the computer(s).
Your computer should now be able to access the Internet through the AX. Please post back your results.

  • Connect to Airport Express to use AirTunes via ethernet cable?

    Hi,
Here's my setup and question: I am connected to the internet using the wireless network in my house. I want to also connect my computer to my Airport Express for AirTunes which is hooked up to my stereo in the computer room. Since I'm already connected to a different wireless network for internet, can I connect my Airport Express directly to my computer using an ethernet cable in order to run AirTunes?
    Thanks!

    Hi.
You don't need to do that. You can simply set the express up as a "client" allowing you to be on the network and/or airtunes and/or wireless printing.
Have a look at this post for the relevant info:

  • Airport Express - continually dropping airtunes

Upgraded to Leopard and seem to have created a job for life fixing everything... and Apple poked fun at MS for Vista
Two days ago and for the past 2+ years my G5 daily delivers tunes to the hifi via airtunes and an airport express. As of the last hour when i got as far as checking if iTunes is working after the archive / install i find my music plays for bursts of no more then 30 or 40 seconds with anything from 10 - 30 second gaps where the signal is being dropped. The G5 is also being erratic on the internet.
As a test i have itunes on this powerbook g4 OS X.4 and can play music to the same airport express unit with no dropping or any misbehavior.
All in all hardly a great advert for the supreme features of leopard so far.. anyone who can point me to my failing or a fix I would be grateful

this had nothing to do with bootcamp and was posted in wrong discussion sorry.... problem now cleared up by the apple keychain update

  • AirPort Express connected, but AirTunes doesn't connect to speakers

    Hi all,
I purchased AirPort Express to get my iTunes sounds onto my stereo.
My WIN7 PC is wired to a Netgear DG834 wireless router. I setup wireless connection between Router and APExpress - light on device is green. So far so good.
iTunes shows my living room speakers and my PC speakers. When I select the living room speaker, it starts to search but after a while stops it without getting connection.
Am I too stupid? Any idea getting this running are highly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Markus

Ok, let's double-check your AX's settings for iTunes streaming:
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing Netgear's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Airport express 802.11n airtunes drop outs with imac ppc

my desktop has an original airport card, in perfect working order, and suffers from non-stop dropouts when streaming music via airtunes. my macbook streams flawlessly. Is this a backwards compatibility issue and is there a fix? I switched the desktop's internet connection to ethernet to test whether laying off the express would improve the streaming. it didn't. airtunes is vital to my computing environment. if i can't fix this, i will have to go back to the old express.
